Great characters, plot and use of imagination. Excellent read. Loved Izzy and Johnny. Two broken souls who find peace with each other. Again, KA does it again with a fabulous book. I didn't want it to end.

I don’t understand the bad reviews...I liked this book. It was sweet and funny. No, it didn’t leave me holding onto the edge of my seat like Rock Chicks or Chaos or Mountain Man, but it was still good. I will continue on!

I loved this book. To be honest I have read all of Ashley’s books more than once. This one was sweet, sad, romantic and hopeful. The characters were easy to love. The only thing I didn’t like was that I wasn’t ready to see it end. Really a feel good read.

I’ve never made a secret of Kristen Ashley fandom. This author has had a profound effect on me as a reader. Her books had such a tremendous impact on me and are the ones that began a voracious, insatiable love of romantic fiction. That love, and the need I felt to satiate it, started me on a journey that, several years ago, I had no idea was even possible. Yet here I am, and I can trace it all back to that day in 2012 when I picked up my first Kristen Ashley book.

So, fast forward five years, and I’ve read the vast majority of her books, and many of those books, I’ve read more than once. At any given time, you can look at the first page of my Kindle, and there will be a KA book on that page in process of being read. It seems that most days I find myself reading at least a few of her words. I may only be able to sneak in a favorite scene, maybe just a chapter or two, or if I’ve got the time, I’ll allow myself to get lost in the story and reread the whole book. So, I consider myself a devout fan, I hesitate to use the word authority, but well, five plus years of reading and rereading these books over and over again has given me a solid understanding of her writing style, her characters and her stories.

I preorded The Hookup, but I’d been saving this book for a time that I could luxuriate in it, take my time with it and enjoy it. Read it purely for the pleasure of a new KA book and of reading. That time came for me this weekend. From the first page, I was hooked. Drawn right into this new KA world of Matlock, Kentucky, I was riveted in place and forcing myself to slow down and enjoy the story, not devour it like the starved fan that I was. It was a struggle, but I did it, and I’m so glad that I did. This book was…. everything I went into it hoping it would be.

If you’ve read KA’s previous works, specifically her Colorado Mountain, The Burg, Dream Man and Chaos series, you know she’s got a vibe. There is something special about the way she pours all that alpha-male goodness onto the page and mixes it with just the right heroine into a story that is pure magic. So, it thrills me, it thrills me, to say that this series has kicked off with a book just like that. Swooning in my seat, firmly rooted in place, I took in the awesomeness that was this book with a happy, racing heart.

Johnny Gamble was a perfect KA hero. Loyal, sweet, sexy, decisive and as alpha as they come, this man was all man, and the kind of man who when he loves, does it hard. Eliza Forrester, Izzy to her friends, may not have had the easiest life, but her optimistic spirit gave her the natural ability to make the best of any situation. These two sizzled from the start, and their chemistry leapt from the page. Even though the attraction was strong and there from the beginning, this was no whirlwind romance, and I absolutely love, love, loved every minute of the build-up of their relationship. A dash of suspense, an in-your-business small town and a cast of side characters I loved, The Hookup was the full package of KA stories with a compelling love story, an interesting plot, characters I was invested in and a setting I can’t wait to visit again.

The Hookup was a fantastic start to a series that felt familiar and comforting, while still managing to pull off being new and exciting. I cannot wait for more, and I hope that KA will give it to us soon in the form of Toby and Addie’s book. The Hookup by Kristen Ashley gets five smooches from me!

❝Why can’t you sleep?❞
❝I’m too happy.❞

There are a few things I know I will always get with a KA book:
1.) AN UNDENIABLY ROMANTIC LOVE STORY

❝To give me a wife made of iron and steel and everything strong all bound up in feathers and kitten fur and everything soft.❞
The love and devotion the hero and heroine have for one another are written so beautifully, you can’t help but swoon! Each couple is, without doubt, soulmates!

2.) ALPHA MALES

❝Sweet, shy Eliza,❞ he muttered like he was referencing me to someone else even if he was gazing right into my eyes. ❝Gonna have to break you of that.❞

KA writes THE BEST ALPHA MALES! THE BEST! Sometimes a$$holes, always protective, loving and devoted, Ashley writes heroes that women dream about and wish were real. Johnny Gamble is no exception. The wealthy mechanic in town, Johnny has been burned by love. His exterior is rough and tough, yet he was born to love and protect. What starts as a one-night-stand turns to more with the new girl in town, Eliza Forrester.

3.) STRONG, FUNNY WOMEN, WHOM DON’T TAKE THEMSELVES TOO SERIOUSLY

❝Roger that, Ghostrider❞

Despite her insecurities, Eliza never lets anything deter her from getting what she wants. She fights and works hard to make a good life for herself. She’s loving and caring and gives to those around her. When it comes to love, she hasn’t always been given the same kind of love she’s handed out. So when Johnny shows her real love, she questions it, for about a minute, because come on, this is Johnny Gamble! She pushes back, she cracks jokes and she loves with her whole heart.

4.) IMPECCABLY DESCRIPTIVE SCENES

You don’t have to visibly see interiors or scenery in a KA book, first hand. Her words reveal the beauty via a movie reel in your mind.

5.) SEXY SCENES, THAT WHILE STEAMY, ARE FILLED WITH LOVE

You know when reading KA she will not skimp on the sex scenes and because she is gifted with descriptive words, these scenes are always hot. But more than that, they are filled with love and devotion. Her sex scenes add to the plot and make the reader embrace the idea of the couple being in love.

6) COMMUNICATION

Trials come and go, and KA’s Heros and heroines always talk about them. You can count on them working through their problems in a way that sometimes makes you think about your own relationship communication patterns, and in other ways makes you forget you’re not a fly on the wall instead of reading about characters in a book.

7.) EPILOGUES

I love Kristen Ashley epilogues, they are like novellas. Stories in their own right, they meticulously and beautifully tell the story of the happily ever after. And while I almost always love her stories, I always love Ashley’s epilogues. You are assured to fall in love with love after having read them!

If you love sexy if you love alpha males and strong, kick a$$ female characters, GET THIS BOOK!

As the temps plummeted over our Christmas/New Years vacation this year, I took it as a great excuse to stay indoors and curl up with a book. After perusing the internet, I happened upon FMA Feeding My Addiction Book Reviews blog with a post about the freshly published book "The Hookup" by Kristin Ashley. I had never heard of the Moonlight & Motor Oil Series, nor had I heard of Kristin Ashley, but the review highlighted all the things I look for in a romantic suspense book: alpha males, independent females, ROMANCE, and a suspense/problem they need to overcome. I downloaded it to my Kindle and finished all 350 pages in two days. And not only that, but I read nearly every sentence of every page - no boring parts to skip over.

What I disliked: I really had to think hard to come up with something I didn't like. If I have any criticisms, it's just that it took forever for the suspense and the suspense was short lived. However, it was there. I would have preferred more of the Motor Oil part to play into the story -maybe some story line in his garage or actually on one of his sweet rides instead of just talking about them. The book could have ended at about page 150, but the second half is good, too.

What I liked: ALL OF IT! This is a great read for romantic suspense fans like me. The first few pages I honestly saw myself in nearly every aspect of the female lead - she was very disciplined, creative, hard working, had pets, preferred country living, and she talked nonstop (kind of like I ramble when typing, typical of the way my pinball brain works under the shy exterior). He was a fun male lead. He of course was loaded, so I could set reality aside and live in the fantasy for a few hours. He took care of business, but more than that he took care of his woman. Maybe to the point of being unrealistic, but it is so nice to read that aspect than the women are just things to use mentality that seems to be portrayed in many romances. I honestly wouldn't have clicked on "The Hookup" if I hadn't previously read the review because I need romance and marriage, not just taking physical advantage of each other (to each their own, I won't judge others, it's just not for me.) However, this book was chock full of romance, purposeful romance, patience, and forgiveness. The main characters truly tried to see each others' point of view rather than shoving their own personal views down each others' throats.

The end of the book hints towards another love story blooming for the Moonlight & Motor Oil series, and it is pretty tempting to add that one to my library as well. We'll see if time allows :)

This is distilled essence of Kristen Ashley.

The hero is a handsome, slightly bitter but caring alpha male that is great at sex, and the heroine is a quirky, feminine girly girl that has great shoes, big hair and is waaaayyyyy more understanding about men's frailties than I would ever be.

That said, I loved Izzy. I loved her shabby chic style; her joy in getting a really great bargain, her love of animals, her insecurities (given her backstory they were relatively realistic rather than annoying), and her devotion to the people she loved.

True wove?
A question that seems to pop up is the hero really in love with the heroine?

YES!

I HATED the other woman. She and the H were “THE” couple, and not only does she leave him to go on the lam with her brother, but she steals his dog! There is no coming back from that. Not to mention…

Like so many of KA’s egotistical OW’s she wants to come back and pick up where she left off. The H wants none of it, nor does his extended family, and they let her know it. The OW may have been his hot, first-off-the-press love, but I bought his love and protection of Izzy in spades.

Second love:
Only only one man can express it best: Hercule Poirot in Sad Cypress.

In Sad Cypress, the accused murderess has been in love with a family friend for years and they are to marry. His eye strays to another woman who is murdered. The h is accused of the murder. Hercule Poirot and a besotted country doctor work to get her off.

At the end of the book after she is vindicated and moves to the country doctor rather than her old fiancee, the country doctor laments to HP that she will always love the first fiancee. Hercule Poirot tells him,
“But mon ami, with you she can be happy.”

I may have paraphrased, but not by much.
Words to live by.

The Hookup was more than just a second chance at romance for its characters, but a way for them to breathe deeply and experience life again after love and loss. With its cast of deep and inviting characters, Ashley wove a love story that transcended the traditional romance narrative by adding in the element of strength and support from family and true friendship; both of which showed such power in promoting self-healing and confidence in Izzy and Johnny. As always with a KA book, it read like a beautiful dream with her typical flair for character traits and descriptive writing from start to finish.

The purpose of The Hookup wasn’t angst or conflict–though Izzy and Johnny’s story wasn’t without strife or challenges–but the power of healing and peace that can come with loving another, and yourself, wholeheartedly. With a story that feels like the real definition of a love story to me, it was so easy to not only fall for these characters and their story, but also the connection they fostered from the beginning and the beauty of the separate worlds they inhabited coming together. Both were fiercely independent with strong heads on their shoulders, and it was lovely to see that Izzy and Johnny could and did stand on their own in every instance but that they weren’t afraid to need or want the other. The Hookup was equally heartwarming and provocative, captivating me not just because of the sensitive alpha hero and the heroine’s big heart, but because of the beautiful ensemble of characters that lifted up and empowered each other throughout the story and how you could see that actively shaping the main characters. But yes, it was also very much because of the wonderful romance it tells, too, because these two coming together were truly something special.

Oh. My. Johnny. Gamble.

I've found my first book boyfriend of the year, and he comes in the form of a sexy, growly, honest, straight to the point, sex god alpha by the name of Johnny Gamble. Sweet jesus. If book boyfriends could get you pregnant, I'd be having triplets.

Might as well start with Johnny, after all that. *clears throat* Johnny Gamble had his heart trampled. She left him a broken, bitter man, who still has a heart of gold, but who intends to never allow another to hold that heart in their hands. He works hard and keeps to himself. But one night, he heads to the local watering hole to drown his sorrows, and he meets....

Eliza "Izzy" Forrester. She's beautiful, funny, and tossing back some margaritas. She and Johnny get talking, and then sweet, prudish Izzy does something she's never (not ever) done before...she goes home with Johnny Gamble. And they hookup. No, I mean they HOOK. UP. Repeatedly. And awesomely. Like, cook her breakfast the next morning kinda hooking up. The GOOOOOOD kind.

But her being new to the world of hooking up (and a self-proclaimed prude), so manages to make things awkward. He gets mad and calls her out. And they're both left thinking they would like to know more about one another. I adore these two. I want to be Izzy's friend, and Johnny? Well, let's just say Izzy wouldn't want to be my friend if she knew the thoughts I had on Johnny.

Just trust me on this--you want to read about Johnny Gamble, and his sweet spätzchen too.

*I'm reviewing my own personal copy for Wicked Reads*
I have such a hard time writing reviews for Kristen Ashley books. I'm not sure if it's my fan-girl status, or the fact that I don't want to give anything away, but I can never find the words to do her books justice.

I love how this book starts! We find Izzy and Johnny in bed, after a one-night stand. The panic and nervousness of waking in a strange bed, in a strange place, next to a drop-dead stranger. Izzy is a calm, collected jumble of emotions (absolutely understandable). She is a strong, independent heroine. I love her! She's caring, compassionate, and intelligent. She deserves a happily-ever-after but doesn't know if she should expect it with Johnny.

I have to mention that the name Johnny threw me for a loop. I do NOT think of a strong, sexy, gentle, Alpha-Male when I hear the name Johnny. I instantly thought of a small child. It took me a while to change my perception of this name. By the end of this book, I will never think of the name Johnny belonging to a small child.

Izzy and Johnny's story totally sucked me in, from page 1 right through the end, I was entranced. The realistic beginning, the cloudy middle, the perfect ending - this is a book worthy of reading and re-reading.
The best part is there will be a second book in this series, and I can't wait to read about Adeline and Toby!

Could not put it down, had to keep reading it! This book is so well written and brings so many different things emotions to to table. You feel like you can really relate to the characters. Hope theres a second book to this one!

Johnny and Izzy meet at the local bar and end up spending the night together. Izzy seems to know the score, and when she learns about Johnny's ex she really knows how it is going to be. However, when said ex decides to come back into town, Izzy takes her leave out of Johnny's life.

But that may not be exactly what Johnny wants. Now, he has a choice to make, and a lot of other things that seem to play into it as well.

This book was good, but it wasn't KA GOOD. It was just normal good. I liked Izzy a lot, and I really enjoyed her relationship with Johnny as well. I also really liked the underlining messages in the book.

Other than that it got a little bit boring towards the end, but that was really it that bothered me about it. I miss the KA books that had more action in them, and lot less details about houses and clothes.

...but wanted to stop and say so far it does not disappoint. Not that ANYTHING Kristen has written ever disappointed me. When I discovered her I downloaded all except for one of her books over a short period of time and would be hard pressed to find any flaws. The heroine is likeable if not loveable and the hero is everything he should be so far. I see pain and angst coming, but since this is a Kristen Ashley book, I know an HEA is guaranteed. I may modify this review when I finish, but just to say I'm thrilled there's a new series to love. When I'm bored with other authors or their work I know I can always go back ... and the Rock Chicks series, which I've read several times, never fails me. Seriously, if you're a fan of this genre, and a few others, go to her page. Anything by Kristen will draw you in.

Most of the ti,e when you read a romance your excited about the hero hot, swoony (Is swoony a word?) loving but rough around the edges. Johnny Gamble is everything on that list and more. You would think the hero would then automatically be the best part of the book because that was what you most excited about but I think when the heroine beats out the hero for being the perfect puzzle piece. The puzzle piece that makes you realize your looking at a heavenly snowy mountain peak and not just a jumble of white a blue puzzle pieces. Izzy is all that and more! Which is saying something because like I said this story has a Johnny Gamble. Kristen Ashley always amazes me with every single book she writes. Read this book if you love Kristen Ashley. Read this book if you don’t love Kristen Ashley. You’ll fall in love with Johnny and Izzy!

I've come to the conclusion that I will never ever ever be unhappy when finishing a KA book. The Hookup was no different than other KA books. I fell in love with the lead male - hello Johnny Gamble! I wanted to be friends with the female lead - Izzy was perfect. Every description of Izzy made me love her - she was cute, quirky, understanding. I love that KA gives her readers fun characters, but they're also real AND her girls are strong, headstrong, confident, smart, fun. They're everything I want to read!
Johnny Gamble was the Alpha to end all Alphas and THIS is why it's my fave!
Also, written to pure perfection, The Hookup is definitely going in my re-read pile!

This book SLAYED ME. Honestly K.A has done it again, and I have so many highlights in this book that I could probably re-read the darn thing in the highlighted section! I adored the characters, Johnny Gamble, who screwed up but fixed it in a way that just made him seem more caring than before, and Eliza "Izzy" Forester who was the sweetest made of iron and steel woman that I have ever met. This was lovely, the story starts rocky but smooths out to fine choclate almost 20% in that just keeps getting smoother.
One of my favorite moments from the book, spoken by Izzy about her Mama: “She was iron,” I whispered. “Iron and steel and granite and everything strong packaged up in feathers and goose down and kitten fur and everything soft. She was the most precious gift I’ve ever received and will be until I have my own babies.”

Ashley, Kristen. The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil Series Book 1) (pp. 212-213). Kristen Ashley. Kindle Edition.

And after that Johnny just, good lord the pair of them slayed me. So that is the review portion and if I can just say how excited I am to hopefully see Addie find her Happily Ever After???!!!! Another series on auto-buy my friends, I recommend this book to anyone that is considering buying it. 10/10 excited squirrels yall.

Sigh...
This story just has everything....The feels....

This was a beautifully written story about two people who needed each other desperately, weathered their pasts together and then loved passionately.

The story deals with finding love after it left you and learning to trust when you couldn't find someone to trust before and dealing with the obstacles that get put in your way together. Creating a family from strangers and learning to let go when it's not working anymore.

This is a book I absolutely adored and will be a hard book to beat.

Liked this one a lot. The heroine is a frugal, frilly self-starter and the hero has been lurking celibately in the small Tennessee town's shadows, waiting for the girl who abruptly left their relationship to re-appear. A visit with no end in sight from the heroine's younger sister and her toddler drops a load of damp blankets on the main characters' new relationship. Not all the bad people who are foreshadowed make an appearance -- that only happens in her 600-page books. Jump in, treat yourself to southern American charm and chivalry this Christmas.

He was a broken man till he met her. Sounds like cliche and the usual romance novel. I felt it was more. He got under my skin. Not just the hot sex either. He’s the kinda guy who was taught to respect a women and to love and protect her. He’s a guys guy but knows how to appreciate femininity. He’s honest too. Once he opened up he was honest about his past and why he was who he was. I loved how she let herself be with him because she listened to her instincts even though hooking up was something she didn’t do. I can relate to that. It was a really good read.

I’ve been a fan of KA since the beginning and it pains me to be critical of any work she finishes but I struggled to get through some of this book... What I loved about this book 1. The feels!!! Oh Lordy!!! The feels in the beginning of the book had me hook, line and sinker. 2. Character development 3. As usual the secondary cast was amazing.
My hesitation regarding this read was the dialogue between characters felt washed and reused almost like I could here other characters from books saying very similar phrases. Overall a solid read.

Perfection. I don’t know what inspired KA to write this book, I only hope she gets inspired again and again. It is spectacularly good. A romance that started with a simple hookup and one that turned into a story that pulled me in and did not let go. I am still humming with the feelings it invoked. It says book 1, I can only hope there are more books planned in the series. Definitely no cliffhanger, and there is an HEA. I wish I had words that would do justice to this wonderful book. Just get comfortable and enjoy KA at her best!

KA has done it again! Not that I'm surprised. I was hooked (get it?) From the very beginning. Izzy was adorable and the perfect heroine. She was sweet and learned to work hard for what she wants out of life. Johnny was the alpha, hot man determined to love and keep his Izzy (after, of course, he does stupid stuff and begs her off). He more than makes up for his lapse in judgment and continues to prove how much he deserves Izzy. Together, Izzy and Johnny are swoon-worthy and have that "Aww" factor that just makes the reader smile.

I had read a review that stated he never got over his ex. He did, absolutely. I almost didn't buy the book off of that review. So needless to say I loved the book and story. Kristen Ashley has a wonderful style, it is a very believable telling of emotions. I felt what they did and it was amazing. The only issue for me was the only "drama" I'm the book was in the end so not much in the rest of the book. Also why would no one know Stu. You'll understand when you read the book.

Enjoyable
Kristen Ashley is a must buy, must read author. Easy to follow stand-alone which mentions domestic violence. No drag-you-down drama.

Interesting storyline that shows the strength of women and especially mothers in protecting their children.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking, humorous and realistic dialogue.

I will continually re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.

I love the Fantasyland series, so I’m usually willing to give any of KA novel a chance. It was good, with the usual alpha that KA is known for. It seemed that things went a little too smoothly, there was no real conflict in their actual relationship that peaked to overcome to achieve the HEA, which I wish would have happened. The quickness I’m used to, but I expected more suspense and more of a climax. Overall, it is still written with her usual skill.

I have to say I'm disappointed with this book. My assessment of the book at 20% into the book basically summed up the entire story for me. Izzy was basically a doormat and Johnny was the wussiest alpha male I've seen in a KA book. I really wanted to love this book since I've been waiting for it to come out for so long. I fell in love with the description of the book that I KNEW it had to be a great story, but sadly it didn't really ring any bells for me. There was basically no drama except the ones in their own minds.

Nothing really happened with Izzy's ex-boyfriend and current stalker Kent and Johnny just kept thinking about how he loved his ex but she left him. I felt neither story was really resolved unless Kent will show up further in the series. Johnny's love for Izzy didn't really feel genuine as he kept going on and on how he was heartbroken because his One (his ex) chose her brother over him. I don't think he really resolved his feelings he just said he wasn't going to go back to his ex, but that doesn't mean that he didn't love her. This book feels like a pale comparison to [book:Hold On|25664796] where Merry was in love with his ex-wife Mia and he and everyone else thought that she was 'The One', but then along comes Cher and smashes it all to bits. I thought that story was AWESOME and how that twist that had him change his mind and love Cher was well written. This was just an awkward repeat of that book and feel well below my expectations.

It looks like this will be a series. If I have to guess the next book will be about Izzy and Johnny's siblings getting together. I do hope the next book is a better read and more like the KA novel we all expect rather than this watered-downed version.

I was on the fence about this book when I first started reading it. I couldn’t relate to Johnny at first and that had me worried.? I’ve read all of Kristen Ashley’s books and didn’t want to be disappointed in this one, since I was so excited about reading this. I’m not sure of it wasn’t enough back story on H the first few chapters or what. I loved Izzy instantly! She was an awesome h! But I should have known Mrs. Ashley wasn’t gonna let me down!! 30% into this book Johnny was on these pages in all his delicious glory! And I must say the sex scenes were some of the hottest I’ve read in her books. I’m talking H. O. T. I like the way they talked about their problems. Not a lot of angst. The secondary characters were awesome as well! Recommend this book highly for fans of her work!! ??

I fell asleep reading The Hookup. I was so into it, I couldn't put it down even though my eyes were drooping. I fell asleep in a small town in Kentucky watching two people deal with the aftermath of their hookup and, I swear, Johnny Gamble and Izzy Forrester infiltrated my dreams with that mess, that push and pull, with their assumptions and insecurities and steamy attraction. I dreamt of this book and I woke up before the sun to dive right back into it. I was HOOKED. I was consumed. I adored this book SO MUCH and I couldn't get enough of it.

I love that Kristen Ashley's characters can range anywhere in age from early 20s to late 40s. I love that she writes books that involve women finding love for the first time and for the last time in different stages of their life. But characters in their early 30s are my favorite and that's where Izzy and Johnny fall. Young, but mature enough that they've dealt with their share of heartbreak, with their share of loss. Young with their whole lives ahead of them, but with enough life experience that they can truly appreciate a gift when it presents itself after having lived through so much heartache.

A good part of The Hookup guarantees the pleasure pain of those yummy heart tugs I love to feel while reading something that hurts so good. The uncertainty and the fragility of what may or may not become of Johnny and Izzy after their hookup had my nerves on edge and my heart in my throat. But aside from all that angst and all that uncertainty is this underlying rightness, this certainty the reader feels that this is going to be good... SO. FREAKING. GOOD. The chemistry between these characters, characters who, by the way, just became TWO OF MY FAVORITE KA PERSONALITIES, is on fire. They click together even when they don't realize they're doing it, even when they insist this won't work.

This book is old school KA in that it fills you immediately with that all-consuming warmth that only this author knows how to deliver. With the opening words, you feel instantly enveloped in KA's world and it's familiar and perfect and intoxicating. But this story feels new and fresh and exciting as well. KA takes us to Matlock, Kentucky and sweeps us away in a new town with new friends and a new story that I couldn't get enough of. I'm not sure if it's just been too long since I've read a Kristen Ashley novel, or if The Hookup is really as fantastic as I thought it was, but I couldn't put this book down, couldn't stop thinking about it when I did, and I never wanted it to end.

The Hookup is an incredibly sexy romance about a one night stand that becomes so much more. But as with all of Kristen Ashley's stories, The Hookup also sees these characters through their own individual transformations, following them as they discover where life can take them if they allow themselves to let go of what they thought they were supposed to want and open their eyes to what they deserve. It's beautiful and moving and heartwarming and deliciously romantic while also being sexy and fiery and dramatic and a beautiful testament to family. I loved it. Ever single moment, I loved it.

I know I'm part of a vast fandom of this author's and we love to toss around the term "old school KA" as if her earlier work is her best, as if nothing compares to the first KA storylines that made us fans in the first place. I just said it in this very review. Old school KA is supposed to mean the very best of KA. But The Hookup makes me want to stop using that term. The Hookup confirms that KA only gets better, her writing and her storytelling grows and changes, remaining familiar but always feeling fresh, and she can make you fall in love again and again with characters that are strangers at first but quickly become favorites. And The Hookup is definitely a new favorite.

Johnny Gamble is a smoking hot sexy badass alpha! But I would expect nothing less from the wonderful world of KA's imagination. I loved Izzy and Addie and all the supporting characters, especially Margot - what a hoot! I hope there are more stories to come from Matlock, Kentucky.

Kristen Ashley has done it again! A start to another series I know she won't be able to write fast enough. I loved Johnny and Iz. Read this in one sitting, but when a book grabs me, I can't stop...Love this author and her characters and this book is no different.

This was a solid read without manufactured or over-the-top drama. The characters are nicely crafted, consistent, realistic. They each have their own voice, which is refreshing. The relationship unfolds at a reasonable pace. Its just a good overall read.

I was highly disappointed that my Audible version of this book did not sync up! As I listen 90% of the time and pay the extra price for this because my actual reading time is limited I found it frustrating. The book itself was good, not my favorite KA book but I did enjoy it and would recommend as I always do with KA!

Overall Opinion: This was one that I was worried about because I was worried about the H pining over his ex and hurting the h. Did the ex come back? Yes. Did the H and this OW have a romance that the town dubbed as being "epic"? Yes. BUT I wouldn't say the H was pining for the OW. He was hurt by her leaving him and ruining their relationship for sure, but he wasn't interested in reconciliation. I liked both characters, and I felt like the H was all in for the h, completely present in their relationship, and not stuck the past. I did, however, want the usual HEA and jump ahead epilogue that KA usually gives me. I also felt like this story, overall, was very similar to others works of hers that I've read. While I did enjoy the characters and the experience of reading their story, I didn't love it. It felt just okay to me. BUT I am excited at the prospect of a story about Addie, Brooks, and Toby! Please, pretty please! ??

** Please see goodreads.com/NMmomof4 for my full review with spoiler tags**

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Izzy and Johnny's story. They meet one night at a bar and end up hooking up for Izzy's first ONS, but she quickly learns that Johnny wasn't expecting it to be just one night. They both feel a strong pull towards one another, and there is no denying the hot chemistry they have in bed. When Johnny's ex shows up, he feels the need to hit the breaks on what is developing between them. When they bump into one another again weeks later, they feel the pull stronger than ever and start up a relationship. There is some family and ex drama, some hot sexy times, and some sweet moments...and they get a HFN ending.

POV: This alternated between Izzy and Johnny's POV. I liked that we got more from the H's perspective in this! It helps me understand where he is coming from and his behavior.

Overall Pace of Story: Good (until the end -- see closure section below). I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H rating: 4 stars. Johnny. I liked him. I appreciated how he took care of those he cared about.

h rating: 5 stars. Izzy. I loved her! She was so strong, loyal, and sweet. She has to be one of my favorite KA hs.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I teared up a little, but I never needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: Yes, but not nearly as bad as I expected!

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Closure: This actually didn't have the closure that I come to expect (and love) from KA. I'm disappointed we didn't get a jump ahead epilogue with a concrete HEA. I would call this a HFN ending.

I've read every single one of KA's books, and have to admit the quality and storytelling she is loved for is slowly diminishing.
A predictable story-line pretty much the exact same as her two most recent books. A dominant male, a conflicting ex, a domineering and stubborn sister, a cookie motherly figure, and a best friend I could have sworn was in the book before this one and the book before that etc.

I think if I hadn't read her past books I would enjoy it a lot more but she is just recycling now. I have never skim read one of her books and am ashamed to admit I now have. Where is the soul churning and stunning love shown between Leah and Lucien. The heartbreaking sores which arose in Fairytale come alive. All dramatic scenes became lifeless and failed to reach their capacity. I have never put a KA book down until I finished, but I'm sad to admit I had to stop halfway and read another book.

I couldn't give her a rating lower than 3 stars because I TRULY love her work, but if you are searching for the same story-line she has pushed out all year, this is a book to jump onto. I was really excited for this book because the synopsis made it seem like this book was different to her other novels, but sadly not. The heroine becomes reliant on the hero and the story finishes, the end!!

Now some may love this book, which is awesome because KA is a stunning author, but sadly not my cup of tea.
But I will continue buying her books because I really love her other pieces

Got this on Audible. The story dragged in a lot of spots with not enough conflict. I found it hard to believe that this stunning woman who was supposedly so amazing had made it to her 30's without ever "falling in love" and having a serious boyfriend.

The story is waaaay tropey. Brooding, millionaire, alpha male MC. Quirky female MC who doesn't "know how beautiful she is". Some of the forced things she did to make Izzy quirky made my eyes roll. Cooking breakfast while wearing muck boots with a canary on her shoulder? Why? To trek horse poop and bird droppings through the kitchen? Stop trying so hard.

By far the worst part was the male narration. It literally sounded like it was narrated by Batman. When I realized this was who he sounded like, I couldn't stop laughing. It was terrible

Kristen Ashley can do no wrong when it comes to Alpha Males. And Hunty... Johnny Gamble was allll Alpha! I am obsessed... do yall hear me? Obsessed!! He is my fantasy man, except his name because my ex is a Jonathan and I hate his guts, but other than that, I want one. I want me a Gamble man. I want the alpha, and the pushy, and the loving, and the affection, and the understanding, and the honesty, and just... every thing. Johnny was everything and I am smitten. I haven't been this smitten since Kane Tack Allen and I had it baaad for Tack. I loved this book. I loved Izzy, and I loved her for Johnny. They were absolutely perfect. I'm guessing Toby and Addie's story is next and I can't wait! 5 starts K.A!!

Before I get to the important part let me state that the cover of this book made the top 2 of my favorites list. Yes it’s simple and nothing outstanding but the clear simplicity and that beautiful color just works for me. I think it’s also my favorite cover among Kristen Ashley books too.
Okay Kristen Ashley books are a hit or a miss for me, mostly hits and it’s not different this time either. I really liked this story even if it’s not my favorite of hers. It has a really great plotline and phenomenal characters. It also has the earlier KA style just with more sophistication and I loved it.
With 300 and some pages this book is one of the author shortest ones and I think you kinda can feel it in the storyline too. There is a lot of interesting potential in the story and several possible conflict points but maybe because of the length of the story maybe because the author wanted to create a more simple and subtle story, none of them are really used. Let’s just look at the possible love triangle that is mentioned in the synopsis. The possibility is there and I even prepared myself for the emotional wreck it could have made me, but in the end it’s resolved in a kind of lackluster way. This trend is unfortunately true to the whole book, although it’s still a great and enjoyable read but the emotions and the drama is just not top notch in my opinion.
I absolutely loved Izzy. A lot of other readers complained that they don’t like her because she is too cute. Well in my opinion she is not cute but feminine and sophisticated. She is a great character, kind, understanding and relatable. A bit crazy with all of the animals and if you want to go into details she can be sweet and cute too, but I loved her.
Then there is Johnny, who had a bad breakup and still couldn’t really get over that one. This means he is a bit standoffish with Izzy and tries to keep his distance, but it became clear for him that Izzy is someone who can melt his heart and give him what he wants. They are really great together, they ha phenomenal chemistry.
The hookup was an exceptional read and it’s true I think it could have a bit more drama and a deeper emotional charge to it. Yet I’m good with it as it is. Go and read it.

This was a really enjoyably story. I liked both Izzy and Johnny and liked their story. This review does have one bit of info about the Johnny & the OW that might be considered a bit spoilerish.

Izzy is the director of a database management team and loves her work. She recently started having a longer commute as, after some issues with a slightly psycho ex, Izzy decided to move outside of the city. She moved near her BFF and has a place big enough for her dogs, cats, birds and horses.

Johnny co-owns some businesses with his brother but he prefers not to manage those businesses himself as that's just not him. Johnny is a mechanic...he likes fixing things and is happy getting his hands dirty. Johnny thought he was in love a few years back but it ended badly and he hasn't dated seriously since then.

When the story begins, Izzy is waking up in Johnny's bed. Izzy is not the type of woman that has a hook up so she's really not sure how to handle things. There are some stumbles but Izzy and Johnny do get through breakfast and set up a time for an actual date. Although because of how they started, Izzy is iffy on how serious their date is supposed to be. Johnny is a bit slow to let people in but he's definitely interested in Izzy and exploring the attraction between them. They start spending some times together but Izzy's BFF also warns her about Johnny's Ex so she's worried about getting her heart broken.

And yes, the Ex does come back to town but Johnny (spoiler) isn't happy about it. He does make one mistake that didn't look good when his Ex showed up that had Izzy freaking out but he was pretty quick to confront the matter with Izzy and make sure she was straight on the fact that he wasn't interested in his Ex. Outside of that, the Ex isn't a major part of the story. There's also a bit of drama in the story from Izzy's sister and nephew showing up unexpectedly due to troubles of their own and their addition had some issues but also added nicely to the story. Izzy and Johnny are able to work things out between them, getting on the same page and working on starting a life together, ending the story with a HEA.

This was a really enjoyable story. Izzy was a real sweetheart..sometimes in a slightly unbelievable way (scene with the birds). But Izzy is a good heroine and is also smart and practical and even a bit of a goof, which made her more likable. Johnny seemed a bit unsure about things at first but I think he just had to adjust because he didn't expect to find Izzy. After his one big mistake, Johnny was great...an extremely considerate and gentlemanly hero. My only real complaint is that the story was maybe a bit slow in the beginning. It picked up and actually puled me in after I read into it some but it wasn't immediate. Overall, I really liked both the characters and the story so I'd recommend this story.

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story. There were two narrators, a female for the parts from Izzy's PoV and a male for the parts from Johnny's PoV. Both narrators did fine jobs but I will say that for me, their tones weren't quite what I felt fit the characters.

The Review:
The Hookup was a great read with a fun, sexy story and characters I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know! This felt like the older books from Kristen Ashley, the ones that made me fall in love with her writing to begin with. I loved Johnny and I adored Izzy. And as always, the surrounding cast of lively characters were a joy to read.

This book starts off with strait-laced, prim and proper Eliza (Izzy) Forrester waking up alone from her hook up, only to see the gorgeous, sexy Johnny Gamble (don't you LOVE that name?) standing outside, drinking coffee and enjoying the peacefulness of his surroundings.

Izzy is the practical one in her family and isn’t usually the one night stand kind of girl, but something about Johnny called to her the night she met him in Home bar and making the decision to throw caution to the wind and enjoy a night with him was something she couldn’t regret, especially when she realizes he brings out a wilder, more open and confident side to her.

Johnny’s past is doused with disappointment and loss. He has no desire for commitment and when he wakes up from a hook up with the beautiful Izzy, he starts to want things he hasn’t in a long time and it scares him. When his past comes calling, he decides he has to end things with Izzy because he can’t give her the “more” she deserves ... only problem is, he can’t seem to let her go.

I LOVED these two together. When Johnny was open and honest and said he couldn’t give “more”, Izzy understood, accepted it and then moved on in a mature way, hoping they could be friends after the hurt faded. They were so grown up about the whole thing. There wasn’t any miscommunication-hissy-fit-drama and I LOVED that so much! Izzy was hard working, self sufficient and was completely grounded. She was charismatic, spirited and a total sweetheart. It was so easy to connect with her. Johnny was a bit tortured, sexy, a little mysterious and just a whole lot of yummy wrapped up in one hot package! He totally stole the show for me because he was honestly just an all around sweet, awesome guy. And when he decided he knew a good thing when he found it, he’s quick to commit and not do anything that might jeopardize it.

The story itself was fun with a lot of things going on and there was plenty of emotions to keep you totally invested and curious to see what happened next.

I love how this author can pull a beautiful, captivating romance together with amazing characters and entertaining events. She makes it seem almost effortless. This is that kind of book and I’ve already placed it in my reread pile!

It is no secret that I am a huge KA fan. I love the majority of her books. I've had a few misses with her, but you can't love them all I guess. But if I want a comfort read that is in the MF world, she is my go to author. She takes up the most space on my book shelves and space on my kindle. If I own the book I own the ebook. LOL So there's the proof of my love for this gal. She just has a way of writing women who aren't whiny and crying all the time that I appreciate. I love her alpha men and her feisty heroines. So I was pretty excited about this new book and series.

KA has a way of describing a scene that puts you right in there with her characters. She gives you a visual that makes you feel like your sitting around the table with her characters enjoying the food and drinks with them. She makes you feel like you are an a extended character in her world. She can let it get away from her too when it comes to describing clothes. I might only have an issue with that because this gal gives no craps about fashion. LOL

Johnny was a dream. I adored him. I loved how straight up he was with his feelings from the beginning and didn't pretend he was all the way in with Izzy just so he could get laid. I liked that Izzy knew where she stood accepted it and decided to let herself have something with him even knowing she wasn't going to be the end game. She was drama free and I can't say how much I liked that.

I really liked the side characters and I really hope we get a book with her sister Addi and his brother Toby and baby Brooks.

Happy reading dolls! xx

So where to start with this review which I will point out from the start, will be all about my fangirling, love, and addiction to the work of Kristen Ashley. For any of those that may have come across another review of one of her previous releases, it will come as no surprise that I love this book. For any of those that know me, you know that I cannot say enough to get you all to join me in all the wonder that being a fan and reading the works of Kristen Ashley provide.

The Hookup was an exceptional story and I will say now you can stop reading and just go and one click, there will not be any disappointment it just is not possible. This story brought back all the goodness and wonder that started my love affair with all of Kristen Ashley’s work. I thought at this point that although I knew and anticipated all her upcoming works nothing could evoke those feelings that would make it all feel brand new again. When I read Rock Chick, I immediately went and consumed all the available books In Kristen Ashley’s backlist at once and I did not take my head out of my kindle until I was done. Then came the impatience for more, the need to spread the amazement, and then what the heck I dove back in and reread and have many times since. Some may be reading this thinking ok what is the point of this and I will tell you. Many may be daunted and overwhelmed when reading the suggested reading order for Kristen Ashley’s series and seeing how many books this entails reading. For those of you who may experience that hesitation The Hookup is GREAT news! The Hookup is the opportunity for those new to Kristen Ashley to fall IN LOVE with her work. This book will allow you to see all the greatness that she pours in to her stories. The Hookup is the first in a new series Moonlight and Motor Oil. This book was like a breath of fresh air in my favorite place, so hard to explain. It was a gift, releasing now just in time for Christmas.

The Hookup starts off hot and heavy from the very beginning. It is a story of, hope, discovery, heart, love, and gosh so much darn passion/sexiness, just YUM. Johnny Gamble is just YUMMMM!! He has now become the leader of the pack in my book boyfriend arsenal and hmm Luke, Ty, Lee, etc. well they may have issue with that lol. I rarely give much detail of what occurs in a book within my review as I do not like to risk spoiling it for anyone. Everyone can read the blurb and in my opinion, should experience the book’s beauty first hand.

Ms. Ashley is a master at writing and creating a wonderful alpha male character, and strong, beautiful, funny, relatable women. Women, like you, me, your girls etc. She writes relationships we all would like to have, aspire to and hopefully some are living them right now. These relationships are not limited to romances. The friendships depicted in her works are what friendships should be, loyal, loving, real. We all deserve our own fairy tale in whichever form it may arrive.

Ladies enough of my blathering, go one click and I’m so happy for you. Get ready and enjoy the ride! The only thing I wonder is whether Ms. Ashley plans to give us the story of Addie and Toby, I really do hope so.

As always I strongly recommend that you read this book and please stop by her site for a full booklist and suggested reading order and make another selection as I guarantee they will not disappoint.

When you read a blurb that makes your heart skip a beat and gives you butterflies, all before you’ve even read a single page, you know you’re in for a good story. Being a huge Kristen Ashley fan, I was, of course, excited by the prospect of a brand-new series, but I’ll admit to being particularly anxious to read The Hookup. A drunken hookup, a damaged hero, and the return of a lost love? I was officially intrigued. I had to know more. And boy, did Kristen Ashley deliver, giving readers a heartfelt, beautifully written romance that’ll have your emotions roiling from start to finish.

Izzy Forrester is not a one-night-stand kind of girl, but, after meeting Johnny Gamble at a local bar, the self-proclaimed prude tossed aside her regular reservations to engage in what becomes a wildly passionate, yet strictly physical relationship. The combination of Izzy and Johnny’s off-the-charts chemistry and glaring mutual attraction turns a casual hookup into a hot and heavy affair, yet the return of Johnny’s former flame throws a wrench into their budding romance. Their already-complex relationship gives new meaning to the word “complicated” as the lingering feelings between our caring, softhearted heroine and our guarded hero become hard to ignore, even as more and more obstacles come between them.

To say The Hookup is an emotional whirlwind would be an understatement. One minute, you’re feeling happy and hopeful, then the next you’re curled up in a fetal position, waiting for the pain to pass. What kept me glued to my Kindle (aside from the juicy, drama-filled narrative), was the indefinable dynamic between Izzy and Johnny. That spark of awareness between them that makes you, as a reader, want them to share the same space so you can revel not just in their raw, primal, unbridled desire for each other, but in the moments that are tumultuous and chaotic as well as quiet and unassuming moments. Their story can make you feel happy and hopeful one second, then devastated and despairing the next. Like all of Kristen Ashley’s books, The Hookup has that magical quality that makes you feel deeper, swoon harder, and invest more fiercely in the characters, which is exactly what happened the more I got to know Johnny and Izzy.

If you’re in the mood for a heart-meltingly sweet, scorching hot, hopelessly romantic love story with just a touch of suspense, The Hookup is a must-read! If you need any further convincing, I’ll leave you with two words: Johnny Gamble. *swoons* The man is a protective, possessive, deliciously over-the-top Alpha male, speaking in monosyllabic grunts, growls, and commands that make you simultaneously frustrated and flustered. His effortlessly cool, self-assuredness is enough to set even the most season romance reader’s heart aflutter (myself included). The Hookup is undoubtedly one of my top favorite reads of the year and Johnny Gamble is a more-than-worthy addition to Kristen Ashley’s extensive lineup of unforgettable heroes.

The Hookup is a steamy and lighthearted Romance novel with the just the right amount of angst and drama. The fast pace and humorous dialogue hook you right in, and the developed characters make you fall in love with the story. The slow build and sweetness of the romance is the cherry on top of this fun and swoony novel.

Kristen Ashley is back with another heart-stealing series. This book very much goes back to the classic KA we know and love, with an unique setting and interesting characters. The plot is character driven and doesn’t have a lot of conflict, but the direction KA takes the story is great; especially since the love triangle turns out not to be a love triangle!

This is a really fun read. The premise made me a little nervous since I’m not a fan of love triangles, but KA didn’t disappoint. I love how she writes Izzy and Johnny’s romance and the progression of their relationship, as well as the unraveling of Johnny’s ex-girlfriend coming back to the picture. If you’re someone who despises love triangles, be assured that’s not something that carries any kind of weight in this story.

That said, I loved the characters! Izzy and Johnny are super sweet; they have very unique voices as narrators and the writing is smooth as we go from one POV to the next. The side characters are also well-developed and add depth to the story, and also give us a little clue at what’s to come in the next installments of the series.

Like all KA novels, there needs to be a little drama and angst. I found that the last major conflict in the book fell a little bit flat. This is not a book that relies on sadness to further the plot, but the lack of impact these scenes caused brought the story down a tiny little bit.

In the end, The Hookup is exactly what I expected it to be. It is familiar, but still super fun and entertaining. KA’s writing is great and engaging, and the lovely characters and sweet romance are highlights. Definitely recommend it to all KA and Romance fans!

I’m so glad I found this book I really am. It’s not only entertaining and super awkward at times (which I loved) but it has a captivating romance that gives you plenty of butterflies!

The story brings us Eliza that just moved into a new town and happened to have a one-night stand with a super-hot, super-nice, super-rich and super-friendly guy called Johnny. One thing leads to the other and they both start having feelings for each other. But there is a catch, Johnny already gave his heart out to another woman and now it’s up to Eliza to get it back.

If this synopsis doesn’t lure you in, I don’t know what will. Reading this, I already knew it was going to be a rocky road until the main couple ended together. And so, it was! Johnny and Eliza went trough a crazy rollercoaster the entire book. There was always something or someone coming up that kept them for being together. And I, as a romance junkie, was going crazy! But they were so sweet. Their romance was so pure, and it wasn’t instant at all. They took their time getting to know each other and getting to know their backgrounds, and life story. I loved every bit of it. The romance happened very naturally which I always appreciate! So, you can read and feel the affection between them growing.

Eliza was the most awkward character ever, but she was so genuine and likeable. I loved her! She has extremely long monologues, though. But she never gets boring, in fact when she rambles and rambles for pages at a time, it made me laugh and cry, but it never bored me. She’s unique let’s say. Her personality makes her talk all the time about completely random things… . She’s an adorable dork. Her background story was super interesting as well.

I must say it took me a while to like Johnny. I though that because he had another woman in his heart he wouldn’t even let Eliza have a chance. But no, the big boy was strong enough to open his heart to her. And the way the author wrote about him, made him into a true gentleman. He was kind and smart and hardworking. And hot. HOT! SO HOT!

The secondary characters were also so well written. They let the couple be the main focus but when they were needed they only complemented the storyline. And all of them had distinct personalities that were so much fun. You had, the sassy friend, the hot brother, the stupid ex, the tortured sister and so much more.

The book itself is quite long but I didn’t feel like it was hard to read at all. In fact, I was surprised by how fast I read it because I couldn’t put it down. The writing is concise and straight to the point. The story is sweet and romantic with the right amount of danger. Kristen Ashley did a wonderful job!

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - To me this story is about two people broken by their families & their past relationships who find other inspirations & friends to find their happiness, and never lose sight of trying to be happy, to not repeat their parent's mistakes. As a new girl in town, Izzy decides to stop at a local bar one night & the rest is history. Johnny sits down by her & they have instant chemistry - this hot bearded broody man finds her cute & shy, but wow, what a tiger in the bedroom! Only for him though, and even if this is her first hookup ever, OMG it was amazing & she's going to accept whatever he can give her. She doesn't realize that she's a complete game changer for him! Izzy has to spend a lot of time in reflection, dealing with her absent father who was abusive, the loss of her mother who was everything to her, and allow Johnny into her life because they compliment each other so well. Great love story even though there is only a small amount of drama & it occurs near the end. Izzy is just the coolest chick ever with her acres of land & millions of animals & her thrifty chic decorating. Izzy & her sister Addie have a new member of their posse, and he's all alpha male! Actually the sight of Izzy & Johnny going at it hot & heavy in the barn made Addie realize her marriage sucked - this is what she longs for! There is a sweet moment at the end that made the entire book for me, when Johnny confronts the family friend who was his stand-in mother all these years, a woman who taught him to love a woman like Izzy the way she deserves to be loved. Sweet, sweet, sweet book!!

not sure of the rules on reading verses Audible, but I am guessing it is like you did read it, you just listened to it instead?! oh my goodness, i love this book, i was so happy 2 try out Audible for the 1st time, my free trial. i've had some many folks saying have you tried any of Kristen Ashley's book before? so glad to have the chance to add another to my read pile. Such a great book. I love these characters, who is my favorite? Lizzie or Margo .. for sure. but those doggies steal the show over and over. They are such a big part of the whole book. I wonder if there will be more from this series soon? I am so ready. Not sure what to call this ... romance, suspense, mysterious at times, each character has such depth and makes you wanna just listen and know more. Loved it!!
Yes, I love Stella Bloom's voice, once I got use to hearing Lance Greenfield .. to me the voice at the beginning changed so quickly ... but then once you get use to them changing between the male and female voice you are good to go. I wonder how these folks are picks? KA did a great job picking these 2. At times I was dying laughing and just loving all moments. I wonder if I was reading it myself instead of listening ... would I indeed laugh this much? I hope KA writes more in this series, I wanna go to Matlock, Kentucky. Love these characters. I love Margo so so much. Must listen. Such a great read or listen. Maybe the point being that you folks who did read it should consider getting the playable verse, 'cause it is so so awesome. loved every moment!! ( ;

When I saw a new KA book being released, I was giddy like a school girl because she writes THE best alpha males. But this one? Not so much. Izzy does something completely out of character and has a one-night stand with none other than Johnny Gamble. He clearly had a complicated past when his ex left him, but it seems he still wasn't over her. At first, Izzy's character was endearing to me. She had an eclectic mix of pets that she loved dearly, and even admitted she was kind of a prude. But how did she tend to all these animals PLUS have an hour commute? There's nothing I love more than a man "manning" up and wanting to take care of his woman. I rather liked that Johnny wanted to step in and help Izzy, but what made me gnash my teeth together repeatedly was her constant reply of "Yes, Johnny." I envisioned a geisha girl bowing to her master. Weird, yes but oh-so-repetitive. How many times did we see Johnny in deep contemplation outside? How many times did Izzy put on his tshirt? But my biggest turn-off with this book was the tense it was written in. Was it 3rd person with a bit of 1st person thrown in there? It was really awkward for me to read. I also noticed there was a time when KA meant to say the dog never bonded with Shandra, but she wrote Izzy instead. I think the author set us up for many situations that really didn't pan out with any dramatic flair. I dunno... I guess I just expected more from this author.

The Hookup is only the second title I've read from Kristen Ashley (I know- shocking- but I promise I'm getting there). I went in blind- no synopsis or sneak peeks before starting and I devoured it.

Eliza Forrester- sweet, shy, sophisticated.
One night. That's all she was looking for and she didn't even know how to do that well.

Johnny Gamble- contemplative, confident, casual.
No tomorrow. Trying to forget.

Goodness me Eliza was a mess and I loved it. Johnny liked it too. He found her quirks and naivete endearing. And it was refreshing to find someone who wanted just him and not what he had. Someone who liked who he was now, and not the Johnny he was in the past.

These two were opposite in every way. It shouldn't make sense and to some it didn't. But to them it did and it was so fun to see them grow. Individually and as a couple.

The Hookup is a romance lovers dream book. There was some super steamy lovin' and a touch of drama that can only come from a small town. But inside of it all were two people who were hanging onto and fighting for the one thing that made them feel alive. Eliza and Johnny's journey was fun and sometimes raw but it was always honest and it was always them. And that is the magic (that I'm learning a little slowly) of Kristen Ashley.

The Hookup is the first book in Kristen Ashley’s new Moonlight and Motor Oil series, and her signature dazzling storytelling ensures this passionate and heartfelt small-town romance is absolutely captivating. Eliza Forrester moved to town in order to start over after ending a traumatic relationship, and when she meets the enigmatic and sexy Johnny Gamble, she can’t resist hooking up with him, which is out of character for her. In the morning, neither she nor Johnny are ready for the night to end, and they cautiously start dating.

Johnny’s heart was broken a few years ago, and he’s not sure it will ever be mended, but Eliza is the first woman who has ever tempted him to love again. He is swoon-worthy as he seeks to take care of Eliza, and he is one of Ashley’s sexiest alpha-heroes to date. As Johnny and Eliza’s emotional connection grows with each fiery interlude, they establish a tentative trust and begin to drop their defenses and open their hearts, but both of their exes reappear and throw a wrench in their evolving relationship. Their love story is sexy and intense but is not predictable, and the unexpected and intriguing plot makes The Hookup easy to devour in one sitting.

If you have never read a Kristen Ashley's book, stop reading the book you have now in your hands and take one of hers. It doesn't matter which one. All of them will fascinate you.
Some of the best stories started as a hookup. I must admit that's the way I met my husband!!
I love the characters from this book. As Johnny says, a person should be insane to dislake Izzy.
And, please, don't make me enumerate all Johnny's qualities. Because you can be reading this review all day long. Anyway, I will just say he is THE MOST PERFECT GUY IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!
There. You have his description. And I am not exaggerating.
This book is just perfect. Because the message is true. There IS love after you have been destroyed. Everyone deserves another chance at love.
But... what am I going to read now? because it doesn't really matter which book I choose. I won't like it.
Whenever I finish one of kristen Ashley's books, I enter in a depressive state for a while. I don't want to stop reading about these people. I want them to be real and be part of my life. It happened with the Rock Chick series, too. Or the Colorado Mountain series. Or the Dream Man series...
I hope the next book is about Tobey and Addie.

I am in love with Johnny Gamble! This book was amazing, the characters were interesting and the love story between Johnny and Eliza was fantastic. My heart melted throughout this book with how Johnny and Eliza's love grew, and their passion was off the charts hot. Their friends and family were funny, sassy, sweet and caring. Margot was pure strength and love. It will be great to see if a love truly does develop between Adeline and Tobias. Baby Brooks added so much to the characters' lives and the scenes with him were so special. I love this line in the book when Johnny is telling Izzy what he dreamed: "I dreamed of winning a pretty woman and making her love only me." I also love when Johnny tells Izzy what they were both put on the earth to do, when Johnny tells Izzy to get with the program, the German endearments they speak to one another, when Johnny and Izzy are camping, how Izzy makes life beautiful, how Johnny states he is "that guy," Addie's nicknames for the men, Margot's "coven" and Izzy's menagerie of animals. This is going to be such a wonderful series and I cannot wait to see where Kristen Ashley takes the next journey. Loved everything about this story!

4 stars!

The Hook Up is about good girl Izzy, the girl who doesn’t do anything reckless or have one night stands. That is, until she meets Johnny Gamble. Johnny is her first hook up, and an unexpected evening turns into more unexpected nights and days together. Until the love of Johnny’s life comes back to town, and Izzy needs to let go. But, something unexpected might lead to more of the same and Johnny may be back sooner than Izzy thinks……

I really enjoyed this newest book by Kristen Ashley, I never tire of her books. There are some authors that just click with me as a reader, and Ashley has a forever fan in me. This story wasn’t as antsy as I was hoping for, but I am an angst whore that needs heavy doses so I think the rest of you will fare just fine. I don’t like to compare Ashley’s work, but this novel easily could fit into the Colorado Mountain Man series, it just had that feel to it.

Curl up this holiday season with a fuzzy blanket and this cozy story! You won’t regret it!

The holidays just got merrier with a new release from KA!

The Hookup is everything we crave from a Kristen Ashley romance. I have nothing but love for this one and excitement for where this series will take us next.

Right off, I connected to Izzy. Her simplicity and kind mannerisms are what I love in a heroine. As for Johnny…pure deliciousness…he does not disappoint as one of KA’s sexy Alpha’s. However, there were times I wanted to throttle him upside the head.?

The Hookup is a story you will get lost in so, kick back with some egg nog and get consumed by KA gold!

Every time I start a new Kristen Ashely book, I get the warm and fuzzies. The Hookup was a captivating, heartwarming romance. After reading around 50 Kristen Ashely books, I can’t say it was one of my favorites, but I enjoyed it very much!

Johnny and Eliza reminded me of some of the old school KA heroes and heroines. Johnny had that KA alpha attitude. He was sexy, swoony, with a bit of sweetness. Eliza was fun, sweet, and drama free. I loved them together. I loved their chemistry. I loved that there was no over the top drama.

I think most fans of Kristen Ashley will enjoy this book. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about it! I listened to the audiobook and the narration was good. It was one of those books I didn’t want to hit pause on. Crossing my fingers the next ‘Moonlight and Motor Oil’ book will be a Toby and Addi book!

4-4.5 stars. This is the best new KA book I've read in a long time. The blurb does not do this book justice and almost made me not read it, but I definitely recommend this book. It's not exactly what I expected based on the blurb. I have been disappointed in KA's newer stuff for the last couple of years (Complicated I liked ok, but this one I liked much more). It felt like vintage KA, except better in some ways. This was a shorter easier read than most of her books. It also had good communication throughout on both sides of the couple. I really liked both main characters and the supporting cast. There was little actual couple drama in the book, which added to my enjoyment.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one and look forward to the next in the series.

Oh man, I loved this book. And I’m 89% sure that the male protagonist ruined other men for me... Other reviewers said nothing really happens and I guess that’s kind of true, but I was glad that this book didn’t go through the “big break” that other Romance novels do where they spend chapter after chapter being tortured while being apart. I thought they seemed like a normal couple working through normal couple situations and finding compromise which was kind of refreshing.
I’m not usually a weepy person, but when Izzy is describing her mom as “moonshine and sunlight and honey” I teared up a little. Surprisingly the end made me a little weepy too, which is weird, because typically things that sweet make my eyes roll not tear up.

Kristen Ashley was the first author to really pull me in. The Chaos series is my all time favorite. Her style of writing never falters. That being said, this story didn't have much "story".at all. I was so looking forward to reading a new Ashley novel so I was a little bummed. All of the characters resembled those in previous stories of hers, especially Deanna. I wanted characters that I could love like in the past and I just didn't care about the 2 main characters. Addie was definitely a firecracker and I enjoyed her but the others . . . . meh, not so much.

Great romance that started as a hookup. There is a lot of sweetness, plenty of steam, a bit of humor, and even a little bit of suspense. You'll love the characters. While she's sweet and just plain lovable, he's closed off and a tad alpha, but had a sweetness to him when he's with her. They aren't overly complex, but enough to be intriguing. The side characters are just as entertaining. While their love story is a simple story, their backgrounds and past make it all interesting. They both have demons from their past they are working through. It's well written. Alternating POV's.

Painful writing this, but I totally and sadly agree with the other one and two stars. This is not up to the standard I expect of a KA novel...and she only has herself to blame for this. It has no depth, no angst, no growth, no real pain and learning to compromise between the lead characters, and no apparent storyline that is almost equally interesting. Her "novels" are becoming more like extended mills and boon books, not for or about real adult people. I dont need or want perfect people, just people who have to work out they are perfect for each other. Two stars as its still a step up from a MandB book, barely., and i still remember all i love about her earlier works.

I haven't read this author in a while. I enjoyed her earlier works and she kind of came back to her roots with this book. I enjoyed The Hookup. Johnny Gamble was the hot alpha male with a few issues. He loved once and was devastated. Izzy was just a sweetheart. She had her issues too somehow she remained open and giving. She may be my favorite of the two. It took Johnny a minute to get his head on right. I was a brief struggle. A little drama and a lot of heat.Good, solid characters with a believable plot.. Sweet story with a nice little epilogue to tidy things up.

I can’t even with these two! So well-matched and perfect for each other. I swear KR fleshed the main characters and their growing romance so well that I was right there with them, falling in love with both of them. She wrote so many awww moments in this book that you felt through everything she wanted you to feel. One of my fav moments were those special times when Iz was talking about her mom. Another one when she shared about her dad. Yet another when Johnny was realizing how amazing of a woman Iz truly is despite her past hurts. It was just one awww moment after another!

I have read every book Kristen Ashley has ever written and I am hopelessly in love with her writing. I have never met a character of hers that i didn’t love, even the ones you love to hate. In this book, these guys, gals, kids and animals are now like family to me (hehe). This is book 1 in this new series and I cannot wait for more. More of Johnny and Eliza. More of Addie, Toby and Brooks. Just more of everyone. The story was fun and interesting and suspenseful. What it also was, was Sexy as hell!!

4.5 Stars... Eliza (Izzy) Forrester and Johnny Gamble's story is one of letting go and believing again; it is a story of hope, strength, fortitude, love, connection, and romance... Written with Kristen Ashley's signature dialogue that is reflective, honest, pure, and full of heart, this story touches all the emotions creating both moments of laughter and tears... A beautiful mix of sweet, sassy, and sexy, "The Hookup" is a tantalizing start to this new series:)

KA is one of a kind! Seriously, she writes in a way that just draws me into her characters worlds that are real, raw, emotional yet so utterly flawed. Her heroines have lived and are not without life experience and her hero’s are alpha, stubborn, loyal and so very sexy.

I have read everything Kristen Ashley has written over the years, many times over for my all time favourites such as ‘Lady Luck’, ‘The Gambler’ or the entire ‘Chaos’ series.
And 'The Hookup' I am pleased to say for her loyal fans like me is up their with her best. Johnny and Izzy are great together and this hot, fabulous, sweet, romance will make you swipe at an incredibly fast rate as I did and unlike her other books, while long, still can be read in one sitting

‘The Hookup’ is Johnny Gamble’s story, he is an alpha through and through -protective, kind, sexy, infuriating yet humble enough to admit it when he is wrong. He is damaged and distant after his ex-girlfriend betrayed him three years earlier. His hometown of Matlock, may think they know his story, but there is so much to this heartbreaking tale. Finally, with Izzy he lets his guard down, & what starts out as simply a hook up, is so hot, so over powering, so right... that they have to make it work, regardless of their hang ups...

Eliza “Izzy” Forrester is such a great female lead, she’s super conservative until she meets Johnny and let’s down her inhibitions and agrees to go to his place. After that first night of hot sex her shyness kicks in… and she just about messes everything up. Her childhood was messy and had no structure hence now she lives a controlled life so this is all completely out of her comfort zone.

Despite all the steamy sex they have, Johnny still keeps her at arm's length. Yet Izzy clearly was falling... I have to say that hurt to read at times as you knew she was way out of her comfort zone and he wasn’t “getting it”...
‘“I’ve never been in love,” I shared quietly. “Avoid it,” he advised resolutely. “It sucks.” ‘

‘The Hookup’ is so much more than a one night stand - I love all the small town behaviors & the locals, the family antics and our characters self-discovery. 'The Hookup' has plenty of suspense and action and a wonderfully warm cast of characters. Fans of Kristen Ashley will adore this, it’s a new a classic! 5 Stars all the way!

I freaking loved this book. Those characters were so amazing. I just want to jump in the book and be part of that group. It had a couple things that happened that I didn't expect and that was nice because I thought I had the whole book figure out.

This book came highly recommended to me and it didn't disappoint.

Hot, steamy romance that started out as a one night stand that turned into a full blown relationship. The ex drama was pretty light on both sides, but their ex history is pretty full of drama. Izzy and Johnny's relationship was a slow development and I enjoyed their growth as a couple. There was more drama with the side characters and in the last 50 pages of the book. It was pretty good and I enjoyed their story and the characters.

New favourite KA book. New KA husband.

This book is not what I expected based on that blurb and im glad i went against my first reaction, which was to not read it.

Johnny and Eliza are perfect together.

The story gave me all those wonderful feels i got the first time i read a KA book.

Utterly absorbing, i read this in one sitting which is unusual with a book this long.

I cant wait for the next one in his series

Best way to describe this book is goodish. It had some of the elements I expect to love from her books and some of the other fell flat. We all know she has a formula which is great (cause when she executes it well it's amazing) but lately there have been so many meh moments in 2017 when reading her. This book, however, wasn't meh it was funny, I liked the heroine and hero, it had a plot, it had all the ingredients but it's almost as if she forgot to stir them.

Mild spoilers- so Kent (her evil ex), her dad (a douchebag), his ex (nice woman who made wrong decision) only filled up pages but nothing happened. Even the scene where heir runs after her isn't in the book. What??? This seemed like a really nice draft of what could have been an amazing story that ended up being goodish. Will I reread it--- probably will the book stay with me like some of her others nope it's just another romance novel in the sea of hundreds of them.

Maybe 2018 is the year Ms. Ashley finds her stride again, but maybe the desire is gone since she has achieved all she wanted to achieve and she clearly doesn't need to write for a living anymore or to get more fans. She has experimented into areas she wanted to and clearly is taking another direction that might not be for some of us.

Heads up- review the audio example to hear the voice actors first before purchasing or you may end up cringing like I did when I first heard Johnny's actor speak.

I was hoping for a little more darker passion and realistic problems within the relationship. Overall the story between Johnny and Eliza was a straight up fairy tale with a couple minor inconveniences along their journey. The seeds for real problems (ex boyfriend, ex love of his life, ransom, etc) were all planted, but never watered.

I really love this author so in writing this review, the five stars are because I like the writing style, I can read her words forever and not really get bored. This book didn't really have much drama and could have ended a lot quicker, but like I said I enjoy her writing style and can read it all day. Johnny is so sweet and I loved his interactions with Addie and her son.

This book contains everything you look for in a romance story. It's sexy, romantic, and has a storyline that keeps you reading to find how the characters get their hea. This was my first KA book in over a year. And while it was fun to be back in her world, I found this one a bit slow going. I usually love that because it means I can savor the story for longer, but The Hookup lacked much of any angst. I kept waiting for the big thing that would get my heart pumping and it never really happened. Otherwise it was a good romance.

Author Kristen Ashley has given her readers an early Christmas present with the release of The Hookup, the first book in her Moonlight & Motor Oil series. Set in the small town of Matlock, Kentucky, The Hookup features an intriguing ensemble cast, an intense romance with a few twists and turns, a bit of conflict to make things interesting, and enough oh so sexy intimate moments to make your toes curl.

In typical Kristen Ashley style, she delivers up a quiet, intense, somewhat closed off hero with a heart of gold and not much to say until he really has something to say and then he lays it out all on the line. A bit wounded from a relationship gone bad and losing his dad, Johnny Gamble is a man of his word and despite thinking he’d never love again is enchanted by Eliza “Izzy” Forrester the minute he meets her. Eliza is quirky, sweet, humble, and has “good girl” written all over her, but when she’s with Johnny he brings out a side she never expected and one she finds she likes a lot. To say Izzy’s childhood has shaped her is putting it mildly and losing her mother to cancer and getting rid of a boyfriend who was a bit psycho has left her a bit off balance, but moving to the small town of Matlock from the city, Izzy is beginning to make a new life for herself and when she meets Johnny her life changes in ways she never expected.

I’m just going to be straight, I loved these two characters and the fact that they lived every different lives, had very different upbringings despite being raised in single parent households, and saw the world in different ways made their relationship intriguing. I think it was their differences that made them appreciate each other so much and made their relationship exciting. I loved that they had what Izzy assumed was a one night stand even though that was rare for both of them and Johnny setting her straight right away, it wasn’t just one night. There was something endearing about Izzy being unsure and nervous and Johnny being sure and steady especially once she hears about Johnny’s ex from her friend. It was interesting to me how easily these two unloaded on one another about their pasts even though it took Izzy a good while to share everything that had happened in her life, but the point is they communicated well and I think that is why they worked even when they went through some tough times.

The secondary characters added so much life, laughter, fun, and love to an already stellar story and I can’t wait to see more of them as this series progresses.

Overall I did love this story but at times it seemed to ramble without direction and it was somewhat repetitive in places, but both of those complaints were easy to overlook because the characters and their story just drew you in and didn’t let you go.

The Hookup was a strong start to what promises to be another well loved series for Kristen Ashley’s rabid fans and I know I am already looking forward to the next book in this series.

I am the first to admit that I will read everything Kristen Ashley writes. No, I will DEVOUR everything Kristen Ashley writes! And ‘The Hookup’ will please her hardcore fans with Johnny and Izzy and their super-HOT and yes sweet romance.

I LOVE when the protagonists sleep together right at the beginning and THEN get to know each other. In classic Kristen Ashley fashion, Eliza Forrester goes home with Johnny Gamble after a few drinks. And yes, Johnny knocks her socks off but Izzy has never had a one-night stand! What should she do? How should she act? She is the quintessential “good girl” so this is just not something that she EVER does. And oh boy are things ever awkward!

“Babe, why’d you put on your panties?” I blinked up at him. His fingers slid inside the waistband to lightly cup one cheek of my behind. My lips parted. “Sweet, shy Eliza,” he muttered like he was referencing me to someone else even if he was gazing right into my eyes. “Gonna have to break you of that.” Yes. Oh God, please let it be yes.

One of the things I adore about KA is her heroines are not 19 years old. They are WOMEN with full lives, loyal friends and yes, maybe some baggage. Izzy had a tragic childhood but through sheer will and determination, created a beautiful life for herself. She is well-educated and has a wonderful job. Was she warned to stay away from Johnny? Of course! But how could she possibly resist this electric and uber-sexy man?

“I only know him in passing too, but I still know he’s that guy. The kind you can’t help but like. He’s solid. Dependable. From good people. His brother took off before Charlie and I got to town and I heard he’s a bit of a wild one. But I knew the man, and Johnny Gamble’s dad was like that too. Those men are men who fix your car even if you can’t afford it and let you make payments that won’t bite too deep. ”

Johnny has distanced himself from relationships and women ever since his heart was smashed into bits by his girlfriend. He was completely wrecked. He is a hard worker and a good businessman. He, too, has built a wonderful life for himself. But the heartbreaking drama with his ex is all everyone talks about and it’s why Izzy just knows that Johnny will never truly care for her. What they have is just sex, right? But Johnny actually likes Izzy which of course makes for some truly heart stopping moments.

Johnny makes some very stupid decisions which are really the basis for most of the drama in this book. I think the blurb might throw off some readers into thinking this book is about a love triangle but that’s definitely NOT what this romance is about! At all. Johnny realizes he better get his act together and that Izzy is not like his ex-girlfriend. She is loyal and smart and the real deal. Thank God Izzy has her sister Addie to rely on to help get her though the impending heartbreak.

My heart ached for Izzy as she realized she was falling for Johnny. Despite all the hot and dirty sex they were having, Johnny still kept her at arm’s length. There was plenty of sex but zero intimacy. Izzy gave her heart to Johnny because that’s all she knew how to do and he handed it back to her on a platter.

“I’ve never been in love,” I shared quietly. “Avoid it,” he advised resolutely. “It sucks.” And again… There we were.

I cried a little during ‘The Hookup’ as I do during most of KA’s books! I also adored the small-town setting and the all of the locals. And Johnny Gamble might be one of THE most Alpha of Alphas. Over-the-top possessive, sexy, masculine but kind and strong, he is everything I want in a Kristen Ashley hero. There’s plenty of suspense and action and a wonderfully warm cast of supporting characters, too. Fans of Kristen Ashley will eat this one up. It’s a classic!

Favorite quote:

“You have a chandelier in your bedroom?”

I grinned, the nerves beginning to glide away.

I also shrugged.

“Am I gonna walk outta your house tomorrow morning coated in glitter dust?” he asked.

My heart sang and the nerves took flight.

He was spending the night.

“I don’t think so,” I answered.

“Best get to f---ing you before I turn into a unicorn or something,” he muttered.

I really liked this one. I ate it right up. Johnny and Izzy were smokin' hot together. Any time Izzy talked about her mom made me tear up. And I just love it when ex-girlfriends make an appearance.

I think KA might be listening because the furniture descriptions weren't as prominent in this book. Plus we got some classic KA because she brought back the kidnapping. I always loved those parts in her earlier books.

Not really much substance. It really was just a love story. Nothing new or surprising. But I still really enjoyed it.

“The going will get tough, and you’ll stick. We’ll fight, and you’ll stick. Our world could rock, Eliza, and there’s one thing I’m certain about, you’ll stick.”

Kristen Ashley gets ALL THE STARS with the first book in her brand new Moonlight and Motor Oil Series! THE HOOKUP was EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING you’ve come to expect in a KA Romance - a compelling, emotional, and beautiful storyline and incredible, unforgettable characters. There is PASSION. There is HEAT. There is SO MUCH HEART. Once I turned to the very first page there was absolutely NO GOING BACK! Johnny and Izzy’s story STOLE MY HEART and I never want it back!

If you are new to the incredible talent that is Kristen Ashley, THE HOOKUP is the PERFECT place to start! Be warned, once you fall in love with her characters, her writing, and her talent, you will want to read nothing but her words for a very long time. I’m overwhelmed with my love for this story and I just know you will FALL HARD, just as I did.

The QUEEN of alpha heroes does it AGAIN! Johnny Gamble is just scrumptious is every single way, and Izzy is the perfect woman for him. Together, these two LIGHT UP THE PAGES and it will be IMPOSSIBLE to look away! I want to shout out my love for this book from every rooftop in the hopes that at least one other reader will fall head over heels, just like me. YOU are that person! Now GO and succumb to the addiction that is Kristen Ashley’s words. You can thank me later! ;)
