This is the first in a trilogy of historical novels about ancient Egypt. Wilbur Smith puts you right there in time and space. I have read a number of his books. This is his best by far and sets up the next 2 books beautifully. For any fan of historical novels, this is a must read.

The original River God audiotape was superb. The Macmillan Audiotape 3 hour abridged version of "The Seventh Scroll" sequel is pale and frustrating. So much has been cut out by the abridgement that much of the story's glory and flow is lost. This edition is a great disappointment.

The excessive details in violence and sex episodes have spoiled the whole book. It does not contribute to the plot and is not needed. Although I enjoyed the story and the Egyptian background, I will not read any more of theses books.

Wilbur Smith is always good. It's interesting how he brings Taita (the eunuch who knows all and is a very egotistical but loving and kind man.)
Here Smith gives some interesting historical facts including how the mummification was accomplished. Smith is one of those rare authors who is able to bring the reader into the plot. There are times when I am utterly transported into Egypt some 4,000 years ago.

Plough through and then get Warlock.
You won't miss much by skipping this book, yet it does answer many of the lingering questions from River God.
In Smith's style it moves right along and has a great ending.
