The Spectacular Now

Given the rave reviews and comparisons to Catcher in the Rye, I expected to love this book. However, I had trouble getting into the book and didn't find the story line particularly compelling. I still look forward to seeing the movie to see what my impressions are.

Tim Harp has captured the essence and struggle of "the life of the party" teenage boy. Yet, Harp gives Sutter--the voice of the novel--a philosophical depth like no other. However, often the philosophy is found at the bottom of a bottle...
Harp is an author who did not hold back; he told the story without sugar-coating it, which made it all the more believable.

I really liked how this book started and honestly the ending was okay but sort of lacking. Sutter seems to just give up on his life and isn't planning on doing anything about it. I don't think he learned to love but what he did for Aimee was in a way cowardly but at the same time the only thing he could do to set her free. This book definitely doesn't have a happy ending.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. The main character was so loveable even with all his flaws. I loved Amy! She is so adorably nerdy that you just have to root for her. Even though the ending kind of left me in the dark I would still suggest this book to other readers. Can't wait to see the movie!!

I chose to rate this five stars for many reasons. This was probably the best book I have read for a long time. This book replaced my all time favorite book, Beautiful Creatures to this book. It is just a cute love story. Like you just have to read it!

I have mixed feelings about this story just because it ends in an unexpected way. I feel that the story had loose ends that should have been tied up. Still a decent read none the less. Had a keen sense of modern day reality that the younger generations can relate to.

Realistic glimpse at what high school is actually like. Some things never change, which is both reassuring and tragic. Love story has a She's All That twinge to it but with a unique flare and more modern tone. The Spectacular Now is a non-stop, honestly witty adolescent novel.

I chose this book because I saw the commercial for the movie. At first the book started very funny and realistic but as it progressed the character did not develop much It was still interesting and kept me reading but it was not quite fulfilling in the sense that the plot never progressed much. The ending just dropped off and never solved any questions.

So disappointed in everything about this book. The only reason I finished the book was because I was hoping that the story would get better or that Sutter would have some type of transformation, but sadly he was still a arrogant a$$ at the end of the book. I would also like to point out that it sounded like it was written by a middle schooler. "And I said so she was like and I was like", and I've never met any teenage boy that talked the way that Sutter talked. The whole story was just extremely bad. If I could go back in time and listen to the bad reviews before I bought the book I would!

This book was really cute! I love sutter's character & it really makes me realize how precious each moment is. I did however hate the ending. It was a cliffhanger- not the good kind either. It was literally like watching a movie and 10 minutes before the ending the power goes out & shuts off. It was so frustrating.

Awesome book with different views on life and love. If you don't like depressing books don't read. The book sweeps you up and you start feeling everything the main character does. And it's not always the best feeling. If you don't like books with open endings - do not read.

I had so many mixed emotions while reading this book. Overall it was a good read and I did enjoy it. It was sad, but then it was happy, and before I knew it, it was back to being kind of sad again... or was it happy? Worth the read! :)

I absolutely loved this book. I hate reading stories where all the characters are unlikable, and in The Spectacular Now, pretty much all the characters are likable in their own way. Fun, funny character that I cannot wait to see in the movie.

It is the perfect book! Everyone should read it! There is just something about it that is so pure and real in this story and I really felt like it was one of the best books I have ever read in my life, and I have read a lot of books so that's saying something.
