Three Californias (Wild Shore Triptych) - The Gold Coast

I enjoyed seeing this story unfold. John Sutter really fell into a pile of trouble. Talk about a mid life crisis. Poor guy has a wonderful life and in less then a year it's ruined. Sure hope things turn out better for him in the next book.

The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille was an ok read but never really took off. The story is about the north shore of Nassau county NY.
The old money and the new money (Mafia) mix together, plot never really got there for me.

Slow start with meticulous attention to background detail, but increasingly captivating and worth persevering with to get into the teeth of an intriguing storey. A thoroughly good read with great insights into the minds of underworld thinking, entwined with the lifestyles and views of the rich American elite as they both struggle with changing times. Thought provoking on many levels. Couldn't wait to see how it was going to end.... and wasn't disappointed!

Great story-wonderful read for a beach vaca. I would have given the book a 5 star, but felt at times the length of the store was a bit excessive and long. All in all, I loved the book from one of my favorite authors.

The story started out slowly. Much different from Mr. DeMille's other books and ended just as quickly. I have always enjoyed the story lines and particularly enjoy finding the locations on Google world. It really adds to the story. He tells the story well and adds those small details that make a mental picture so much richer. Could have used more action, ie Panther and the Lion. Overall a good book.

This is a great book! Nelson Demille's characters are funny and, even though it would seem hard to relate to the wealthy of the Gold Coast, the characters draw you in and make you wish you really knew them. If you are familiar with Nelson Demille's books, you know his main character always has a hilarious, sarcastic side that will make you laugh out loud. Read this book, it's worth turning every page!

Enjoyed the book very much.. Of course my first DeMille read" By the Rivers Of Babylon " is my all time
favorite. Learned a little about Long Island in the Gold Coast. Have never been in that area although I grew up in New Jersey. Always interesting to learn about other places- I look forward to my new DeMille read "Up Country."

A page-turning novel that keeps up sustained suspense. Interesting characters and setting. Glad I was able to read the sequel shortly after reading this book and didn't have to wait ten years for the author to publish a sequel.

Once started couldn't put it down! Loved the interplay of dialogue between characters. Glimpse of life lived in a different time, a good honest man placed in a position where the right thing to do may just be wrong. Can't wait to read more by Mr. DeMille

I finished the book while in Minneapolis and had to buy the next in the series, the Gate House, and finished this one yesterday. Again, greatly disappointed that it was not longer. Loved the surprise ending; much different than the one I had planned out in my head.

Please write another in this series.

Absolutely fantastic writing. This is the kind of book in which you can taste the tastes and smell the smells. It feels like you are actually there! And this, despite the fact that it such a new literary scene for me, as I have never read about the Gold Coast before. I will definitely try other books of DeMille in the future.

Nelson DeMille is a good story teller. Blends the "white shoe lawyer",with the mafia lawyer and the blueblood Long Island socialite. It is a fast read and the author has a great sense of humor and provides great dialogue.

Very entertaining with a twist at the end to keep you interested. His style of humour evident in his previous books, continues to make me laugh after almost every paragraph even though the book deals with the break up of families , mid life crises and issues of loyalty and personal integrity.

Recommended by a friend and it was a brilliant hit. I would go to bed early to read, took the Kindle to the gym. I saw there was a sequel, but I'm not planning to read it because I thought the ending on this was perfect.

Really nice peek into the minds of three adults. Why they do things, who they do them for and what makes them do it (drive). Nicely done. Uses Sutter "thinking" as the voice of reason and the irresponsible drive/force he has. Great look into the macho side of man. Brilliant. Some may say it should be course work for under graduate psychology 101. May answer the questions: What drives men? The penis or the ego? What drives women? Charm/power/looks or the bulge? Sutter (DeMille) hates women somewhat as he makes them too simple, too easy to explain. Men are his forte and his insights are right on. Great little history lesson included. The accuracy? Really enjoyed the story and the book. Difficult to read because you knew what would happen and how miserable it would make so many of the characters. Loved the pain.

Kim Stanley Robinson is one of my most favorite authors. The thing I depend upon from him is the depth of his research on whatever he includes in the arc of his story. In this particular instance, I, a Californian by birth and rearing, learned an enormous amount about the history of Orange county that I hadn't yet known. This was apart from the stories of the primary characters, who were well drawn, as is customary in KSR's work. He seems to me to keep the number of characters he employs few enough so that he can develop them sufficiently for the needs of the story, as we see them play their parts throughout their stories. I enjoyed this novel, both as it stands, and in contrast to its predecessor in the triptych.

The best mobster book ever. As enthralling a look at organized crime in NY as THE GODFATHER (a novel by Mario Puzo that almost made my top 50). Like THE SOPRANOS, THE GOLD COAST is packed with laugh-out-loud scenes. I love all of DeMille's novels. But this is his best. A classic.
