This book combines social tension between races and individuals on so many levels, all culminating with one trial within the community. This book keeps you thinking while you read it, I thought of so many different ways it could have ended while reading it. Great book.

Exceptional read. This is a love story, murder mystery and war story all rolled into one great tale. Guterson has a wonderful way with the English language, describing even battle scenes in an part flu way. I truly enjoyed this book and hated to see it end.

It takes place in a most interesting area, which I have studied and visited. The period time is of interest especially the handling and interaction of the traditional national U S migrants and the more recent t Japanese, even before the war.

A beautifully written story, set in a fascinating era. The charachers jumped off the page and the story was gripping. I did tire a little of some long descriptions and some of the repetition in the court trial, but a great read overall.

Snow Falling on Cedars held my attention from the first page. I had no idea how much history we were not taught in school concerning out own country, and was so moved by this.
It's a must read.

Sometimes I think they sell books by the page. More pages equals higher price. This was a good story that I enjoyed reading but at times became overwhelmed by the detail a lot of it seemed to be fluff.

A stunning book. Griping story from start to finish. I'm so glad I read it. The characters were richly drawn and the plot always compelling. The setting was so rich in detail I actually felt like I could see it with my own eyes.

Very descriptive throughout except for the end. That part was quick.
I like the mix of history and prejudice. Love won, lost, and comfortable. The story argued very different angles, yet seemed like the wrong would win. Definitely, worth reading once.

I read this because my high school sophomore granddaughter is required to read it by Penn High School in Granger, Indiana. While it is a study in prejudice and its effects on American citizens of Japanese descent, it also is about the complications of love between childhood sweethearts of two races. Even at my age I choose not to read graphic sexual descriptions. When I read what they want high schoolers to read I cease to wonder why they feel sex anytime is permissible.
There are better books. As computer programmers say, garbage in garbage out. Who writes about good triumphing over evil and the joy of commitment to a cause of right? Who speaks to our children and grandchildren to say you can do better, there is hope outside of drugs, alcohol and pornography? THAT IS WHAT THEY SHOULD BE READING! Oh yeah, the Bible as literature is not allowed. Go figure!
I sound like an old lady on a rant but I just want to say there are better things to read and better ways to make the points made in the book.

Snow Falling on Cedars is a well written book whose author will take you deep in to a story in which the characters and their lives are more important than the murder and trial which sets the stage for these characters. I loved it and would highly recommend it.

Though I wasn't initially drawn to the storyline, I had hopes that it would be a well-written novel. I was not disappointed. It has everything one would want: poetic yet pragmatic writing, a love story with tension, mystery, and redemption. Well done, Mr. Guterson!
