Refreshing glimpse into Kate and Curran's Atlanta told from young werewolf Derek's point of view. The story is fast-paced and compelling with the right balance of danger and snark between the two young protagonists to keep you turning the page. It helps to have read the other Kate Daniels books, because some of the external characters and references are like little Easter Eggs for devoted fans, but I think this story is good enough to stand on its own. I definitely enjoyed hearing from Derek in his own voice.

Worth every penny. This is the sort of quick read that I can return to again whenever I need my Ilona Andrews fix.

Loved this story. If you love Kate Daniels, then definitely purchase this story about Julie and Derek. It's Grey Wolf #1, so here's to waiting for Grey Wolf #2! This is well worth the $1.99. I was soooo happy when I read that a story by Ilona Andrews was available on their facebook page and quickly loged onto Amaazon to purchase it. I had to work that day and was very impatiently waiting to read the story. Awesome! You get come surpirses and revelations about Julie and get to see how Derek is doing. I sure hope Ilona Andrews makes a series about them, both now to see them grow (both in body and mind/abilities) and to see how they get together-fingers crossed!

This novella gives a look into Derek, his thoughts and feelings, while he's hunting down those who killed the family he seeks vengeance for and I liked it. Andrews doesn't disappoint in this novella, I don't recall any of them disappointing. Not so sure I like the direction Julie's headed in. I see her as betraying Kate, so I didn't much care for her in this story. Derek's none too happy about what she's doing either, doesn't like it at all.
Just a side note, I don't appreciate the $3 price for 67 pages, it's my love for this author team that I went ahead a bought it, and that I got a gift card for my birthday so it got paid for through that.

Ilona Andrews. Genius. That's really all I need to say.

The Kate Daniels series is a favorite and if she is now starting a Julie/Derek spinoff I am completely on board. This novella is as good as many full length novels.

Derek, our troubled lone wolf, is still one of my favorites and he shines here.

Julie is growing up and, to be honest, she frightens me. The power she has gained from Kate leaves her vulnerable to those that would use that to their advantage. I hope she isn't making a big mistake with you know who.

But...the two of them together - dynamite.

This was so, so good. 5/5 stars.

I've never really been a Julie fan. I love Derek, but I could give or take Julie. And now that I know she is in talks with he who should not named I think she is a bigger idiot than I thought... So I love Kate and this series but Julie... Ugh

this was a really fun read. Julie and Derek make a great team as they try to define themselves and who they want to be, with larger than life role models. I love that the story is told from Derek's POV, gettimg to know how much is under his scarred surface.

There is also a pretty big reveal that should make an impact going forward.

And I hope the title is promising more to come.

Great short story with Derek and Julie - others have written on the plot so I won't but it was nice to see the spark of "something for the future" there between them and, of course, them working together kicking the bad guy's butt. I love how IA gives every character their own strengths and abilities and instead of 1 strong character rescuing a weaker one. With Grey Wolf "BOOK 1" many of us are hoping for more. There were a few OMG revelations which will probably be expanded upon in the next full KD book.

Ok, I realize that the union is pending, but Derek and Julie are a wonderful match. Julie is shaping up into a formidable young young woman, wise beyond her years, and it is wonderful to have something special finally coming the long-suffering Derek's way. Oh, is this a spoiler? Another beautifully realized installment in the Kate & Beast Lord saga. I actually read almost every word of the fight sequences; I love urban fantasy, but my eyes usually involuntarily slide over the fight scenes.

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. While it's a stand alone book from the main Kate Daniels series - I would encourage anyone selecting this book to read the main series first.

There's a lot of different power roles in this book and you should be familiar with the main series to understand all the dynamics.

I love love love this book and can't wait for another Kate Daniels (anxiously awaiting Kate Daniels #9) or grey wolf book.

This one is about Derek, our favorite wolf and Julie, Kate's irrepressible ward/daughter. Other than a few sentence fragments this was a really good story. Derek avenged the deaths of friends and Julie gets mixed in. A really good story plus, since I'm from Atlanta, I know the area where the story takes place. A definite must for Kate Daniels fans.

I really enjoy their work but wasn't sure if I should buy this or not. Obviously I gave in! I did actually enjoy it, however I have become quite skeptical of their marketing techniques and have noticed a lot of their books are either retitled or have a sneak peck in them or something just to pad their size. This one was too short and not worth it although I really like both Derek and Julie.

FANTASTIC! This first book in a new spin-off from Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series features our favorite werewolf Derek and Kate’s ward Julie. If you haven’t read the Kate Daniels series (you should) you can still read and enjoy this. This story is more young adult Derek is 20 and Julie is only 16 but the action, adventure and snark are still there. The writing team of Ilona Andrews haven’t let us down yet. Go buy this book!

What can I say? It's Ilona Andrews. If you hvnt read anyone of their books I say, 1) Why not, cause you're missing out terribly, 2) I'm jealous that you've just discovered them, and 3) buy all of them especially Kate's and Curran's series...why are you waiting...Do it Now!

I'm begging IA to start a YA series with Derek and Julie as the lead characters. Ilona Andrews: The Masters of Storytelling.

OMG! OMG! Derek and Julie! Blood! Magic! Snark! Emotions! And . . . Roland???
Yes, it's a novella, not a full book.
Yes, it suggests another series.
Yes, it's amazing like everything else Ilona and Gordon write.
Yes, you really, really want it.
And yes, you will really, really enjoy it.

I like the characters in this book. It was easy to read and had a natural flow. I wish there was more romance between Julie and Derek...maybe in future books. I enjoyed the action and drama. The cliffhanger ending makes the reader hungry for the next book. Please keep this series going for several books.

This series is one of my favorites and it's always fun to get additional peeks of this world from outside of Kate's perspective. The story follows a pretty familiar premise in the KD universe but it is engaging and well written as always. The main characters are probably fan favorites of just about everybody who reads this series and several revelations are revealed about the two characters. Some were pretty much expected but a couple... well, lets just say that when Kate finds out I expect it to go over somewhat like the Gadget test at Alamogordo.

This might be my favorite novella/side novel in this series and If you enjoy The KD's books at all, you need to buy this novella.

Magic Stars is the novella many of us have been waiting for, at least those of us who recognized the pretty wolf Kate got stuck with in Magic Bites was more than a pretty face. I'm not sure why I'm not simply saying "Ilona Andrews wrote this; read it," but...no, Ilona Andrews has written a gem of a story about two young people deciding to walk their own path. Read it.

Julie is hands down my least favorite character in the Ilona-verse. That smart assed mouth of hers gets on my nerves. I still can't believe they killed Aunt B but let this brat live.

Having said that, the kid has balls and I'm really glad she's strong and not a victim.

The overall pace was a little too quick and at first I thought I wanted more backstory. Then I realized I just wanted a different story. One without Julie.

But as I've said time and time again, I'll take anything Kate Daniels related over every other series except maybe The Nightside.

Worth a read.

I would read anything from Ilona Andrews and love it. This is my all time favorite author (or writing duo in this case). I can't wait for the day that Julie and Derek end up together, and I loved this short story of their adventure together! They have developed so much and it was fantastic to read this really interesting snippet from their lives.

Complete story telling more about Derick and Julie and their growing up and handling problems on their own. Julie is older than her years and learning from her grandfather. Derick has found a role that fits him now. I just wish it wasn't over so soon! All of Ilona' s books are keepers that you read over and over. Now I will go back and slowly savor it! Reading previous Kate Daniels books would help the reader understand where Julie came from and what derick was like younger with no scars.

Amazing, fabulous and another winner for Ilona Andrews. if you haven't read any of her other books, I would definitely recommend reading her other "Magic..." books first (at least one or two of them, the first is Magic Bites) in order to understand the main characters of the story. Although to understand the whole background, it's better to have read the series and it is well worth reading. This book (novella) is a twist on the series and I have to say that I didn't see parts of it coming and there were shocks to my system... Definitely an excellent read!!

Boy Wonder and Kate's kid work together on a case. I'd say more, but I'm not spoiling it. It is well written, as all of Andrew's stories are. It reads like it happens right after "Magic Shifts." Enjoy this book!

Love the Kate Daniels world. The books are great filled with loss and finding of yourself and a love that lasts. The novellas in this world fill in the gaps and bring more depth to all the characters for the whole series. Look forward to the next one with anticipation.

This was, as is usual for Ilona Andrews, a wonderful and engrossing story. It was too short and left me wanting more. I've never read an Ilona Andrews story I didn't like and this one is no different. The short story features Julie and wolf shifter Derek, who combat the "evil doers" in typical IA fashion, but it holds some interesting twists that are going to impact the Kate and Curran novels going forward. Delicious!

I received an ARC of this book from the author, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.

I also bought it, that's how fantastic this is.

Eeek, she got it out earlier than I had expected. Sorry for the late(r) review.

Squee! We get a Derek and Julie novella! This is an independent project so YEAH for self publishing! But it is an addition to the Kate Daniels World, and while I find her novellas to be very successful for me, that may be because I am well grounded in this world. So if you are a Kate Daniels reader this is a must read, but if you aren’t, I say what are you waiting for, start at the beginning and then read through here.

This is the Andrews’ version of YA/NA, and they’ll tell you it isn’t their best perspective. But with characters like this who are grounded in a larger series, they do a great job. For me at least (knowing my penchant for disliking YA/NA), what makes it work is that while these characters are 16 and 20 years old, they have had hard lives and aren’t very teen-like. Not like they are grown up characters with young ages slapped on the, their lived experiences have just aged them in a believable way, and so the teen drama is largely absent.

Beyond loving these two characters and wanting to know more about them though, this story is KIILLER, just all sorts of nuggets about what is coming up next. Do you want to know what’s happening with Hugh? Yeah, that is in here. Do you want to know what is up with Kate and Julie’s relationship? In here too! Do you want to see Julie put the feminist smackdown on Derek? You’ll have to read the book. Do you have a great and terrible love for bacon? Very funny Gordon and Ilona, that one scene was priceless.

I could keep going on about the things I love and that you need to read, but I won’t because I’d risk spoilers, and no one wants that. But there are myriad reasons to read this, not the least of which is seeing these two work together as a team. Don’t worry, nothing romantic, Derek very specifically closes even a hint of that right now, Julie’s too young. But they are a fantastic team. And damn, that ending, it is just that start of some sort of fairy tale. Of course not the newer fluffier version of fairy tales, no not the newer fluffier version at all.

Just holy hell, this one is not to be missed. I am just flabbergasted. Probably you could read this without having read the rest of the series, but I don't’t advise it. What this mostly is, is a great big luscious Christmas present for fans, and a holy hell I can’t wait for Magic Binds. And it is listed as Grey Wolf Book 1 on the store, so a Derek series? Oh please I hope so!

This duo continues to keep me engaged in their world. I was afraid the Derrick and Julie story was to good to put in a novella. But I think this was just enough to grow their friendship and open up opportunities for later series. Of course it was over too soon but I enjoyed it while it last.

It is clear that Julie and her Wolf are going to have a bumpy road into a romance but it was a wonderful start to a new series. I love these two characters and it is really nice to see them be a focus of their own series. The link with Roland was unexpected but adds a interesting plot line.

Imagine you're really hungry, really starving, and the waiter brings you two bites of delicious food. That's it. Get out.

That's what this short - too short! - story is like. Just as it gets going, it's over. I want more. It's not satisfying. Come back, Julie and Derek! You can't be done already!

I may be in the minority here, but I'm really disliking short stories and novellas any more. They just don't do it for me, no matter how well written. It's actually more frustrating than waiting for a full length book.

4 stars for writing and characters, 2 stars for unhappily short length = 3 stars average.

This novella from Ilona Andrews (#8.5 in the ‘Kate Daniels’ universe) was made available to purchase today, I read it in an hour and now I just have to share my thoughts because, … I think this is one of my favourite pieces of writing from Ilona Andrews. Like, ever.

First off: everyone by now should know that I’m a huge Julie fan, and have been ever since she kicked some serious butt in her own short story in ‘An Apple for the Creature’ anthology. I have also been a long-time Derek and Julie shipper, probably from the time of book #3 ‘Magic Strikes’ when she didn’t care that he was scarred. And sure, teen Lothario Asciano poses some interesting tension in Derek and Julie’s dynamic, but I know who the HEA should be for Julie when she’s of an age.

‘Magic Stars’ is a delicious slice of suspense and character revelation, wrapped in an action-adventure for Julie and Derek to go on when they find themselves investigating the same mystery from different sides.

I would say that if you’re a huge ‘Kate Daniels’ fan, you need to read ‘Magic Stars’ as a priority. There are a few hints about what Julie has been doing in talking to Roland, which was quickly revealed in last book ‘Magic Shifts’. There are also revelations about Julie’s awareness of her shifted relationship with Kate. Both of these crumbs have no doubt been sprinkled in this novella in a lead-up to bigger revelations in 2016’s ‘Magic Binds’, but they’re particularly delicious to read straight from Julie’s perspective.

This book though, is really about Julie and Derek. Julie is sixteen, mind – so it’s not a romance … it goes deeper than that. We see how comfortable they are with each other, the trust that’s there when Derek doesn’t think he can rely on anything in this world, and the foundations that have already been laid for a future *something*. It’s really special to read, and just has me desperate for Ilona Andrews to give Julie her own spin-off series, that she continues to prove she can more than handle.

There’s definitely a hint here that giving Julie her own series would require her to first go down a dark path … but reading how strong a bond she has with Derek, I trust that he could bring her back from the brink of anything. And boy, do I want to read the heck out of that!

It’s not Christmas just yet, I know, but doesn’t it feel like it every time Ilona and Gordon publish something new? Yes, yes it does. Magic Stars came somewhat unexpectedly, having been kept secret until about a month ago, and the second we learned the protagonist, we were collectively consumed by an overwhelming feeling of pure joy. After all, Derek Gaunt deserves no less, and neither does our Julie.

Finally, we get a glimpse of Boy Wonder from up close. We’ve been waiting a long time for it, and it’s easy to understand why. Derek’s head is a dark place and his voice must have been very difficult to achieve. Even now, we only get 3rd person narrative, albeit a very insightful, intimate one. Looking back on his life and how he came to be a member of the Pack, it’s a wonder than he stayed not only relatively sane, but loyal and kind-hearted above all.

Magic Stars is relatively short, but it packs a strong punch. What starts as a vicious murder and a hunt for revenge ends up being a much more dangerous plot against Atlanta. Derek and Julie are the only ones standing between the city and total destruction and as usual, they do so fiercely and with heaps of sarcastic remarks.

Aside from being filled with action, Magic Stars brings new on the romance front, just a tiny hint of something I’ve been hoping for for a very long time. With these two, a mere hint is enough, a subtle promise of more to follow somewhere down the line. I’m sure it won’t be simple or easy, but that’s half the fun. Whichever way the tide turns, Ilona and Gordon will make it endlessly entertaining.

There are just two words one can say after a novella like Magic Stars. You all know them, you all say them often enough. MORE, PLEASE.

This short story stars one of my favorite side characters, Derek, in his new role as essentially the enforcer of Kate’s city. Julie, who has named herself Kate’s herald, joins Derek as he hunts for some awful child murderers.

Derek is far from the optimistic, smiling young man we met in the beginning of the series. He’s got battle scars, both internal and external, and we all know that Julie is in love with him. I think he knows it too, but he feels she is too young to act upon it. For that reason, he keeps a firm wall in place (at least on the outside) when they interact or get too friendly. This story, however, throws them at one another in a battle situation that casts a little light on his feelings (and her feelings, too).

Overall, as a story, it had a little bit too much dark and rough action thrown together and not enough of the lighter character interactions. Maybe that’s how Derek’s story needs to be told, but I found myself spacing out a little bit while reading it. There also wasn’t a real reason to read this story, other than confirming some of Kate’s suspicions with Julie. Having already started the next book in the series, you can pretty much skip this one, unless you want to see what goes on in Derek’s head.

It's no secret that I'm an Ilona & Gordon Andrews fan girl, I adore all of their books but I'm especially addicted to the Kate Daniels series. Derek has always been one of my favourite side characters and I love Julie too so the second I found out about this novella it jumped straight to the top of my most wanted books pile. As fans of the series will know most of the novellas aren't essential and can be skipped if you only want to read the full length books (although why anyone would want to skip ANYTHING by this couple is beyond me!) but I'd say that's definitely not the case with Magic Stars. We get a lot of insight into the series as a whole in this story and it's well worth reading even if you don't usually read novellas or short stories.

This may be set in the Kate Daniels world but it's definitely Derek and Julie's story and it's told from his point of view. Finally we get a chance to be inside the head of the wolf who stole our hearts in the first book of the series and I loved every minute of it. I'm going to assume that anyone reading this review is already familiar with the series and is up to date with the full length books (as far as Magic Shifts which is the most recent release) so please be aware that beyond this point you may come across spoilers if you're behind on the series.

I'm sure we all remember the Derek we first met, the one who was funny, handsome, charming, who could talk his way out of any kind of trouble and who women of all ages couldn't help fawning over. He hasn't been that happy go lucky boy for a long time though and I've been getting increasingly concerned for him as the series has continued. Getting tortured and having your looks destroyed is bound to change a man and Derek has lost his joy of life, his wolf is closer to the surface than ever and he's very lucky he didn't end up going loup. It's kind of heartbreaking being inside Derek's head, from Kate's point of view he's only ever been the boy she loves and although we know he is scared and damaged she's never made a big deal out of it, but Derek has all kinds of issues with the way things are now, especially the way other people treat him because of it.

I don't want to talk too much about the plot of Magic Stars so instead I'll focus on how much I loved seeing Derek and Julie working together, I've loved them both from the beginning but I always thought of them as more like brother and sister than potential love interests but I have to say I think I might be shipping them now. Julie is still a little young for anything serious but I definitely want to see more of them working together and who knows what the future might hold for the pair. I love seeing how far Julie has come from the young girl we first met and through her we get a little more insight into Roland and what he's currently up to. It was also really interesting to see how Kate's magic is effecting Julie and her abilities too and I think that's going to have a big impact down the line.

For such a short story Magic Stars sure packs a lot in, there's plenty of action and a lot of character development that you really don't want to miss. This has made me more eager for Magic Binds than ever but it's also made me desperate for more books starring Derek. The fact that this is listed on the store as Grey Wolf book 1 gives me VERY high hopes that we might have a spin off series to look forward to and that would be absolutely perfect!

A chance to get Derek's point of view, a little side adventure for Derek and Julie, and a few tantalizing surprises about Julie? Oh yes, this was definitely a delicious little addition to the series.

Magic Stars is a tweeny novella in the Kate Daniels series. While its about side characters on a standalone adventure, there are some discussions and reveals that make it best read in order or at least after book eight.

As I said this is a novella so it goes quick. It's a gritty case that Derek and Julie were assigned from two different people and they meet up to join forces. It was a good challenge for them and showcased Julie's newfound power and strength. She is very much a snarky, arrogant teen who thinks she's got it all under control even if she's taking magic lessons from Roland no less and passing judgment on the choices Kate made. There is a new heightened tension between Derek and Julie that is left alone for now. My favorite part was getting Derek's thoughts and more of his background. He's always been a favorite character. Julie has some brat to her, but I'm willing to give her a chance to grow out of it.

Like all their novellas, this one is well-developed and makes the most of its short page count. Worth giving it a read if you get the chance.

Fans of Ilona Andrews have begged and pleaded for Derek to get his own story since he was first introduced in Magic Bites. Originally ordered to shadow and protect Kate Daniels due to her impetuous actions upon meeting the Beast Lord; Kate gained her very own teenage werewolf sidekick and a very good friend in Derek Gaunt. From that moment on he has made us laugh, swoon, and even shed a few tears as we have watched him change from an attractive outgoing teenager to a hardened loner who has seen and done things that left him damaged on the inside and out.

Novellas are fabulous ways to divulge deeper into a particular story line or character. And it’s always a bonus when a series revolving around one couple offers readers a chance to see the world through the eyes of another character. Especially one as complex as Derek. His unique voice, heard only in the distance before, comes through crystal clear with a fatalistic tone. We can hear how rough the past year has been; completely changing him not only physically but mentally and emotionally. He is conflicted, stressed, and it shows.

While Kate is the main voice of the series, hearing from Derek gifts us with insight into things Kate doesn’t know about. And ho boy are there things going on that she knows nothing about. Things about Julie. Things about Derek. Things that are coming for them and Atlanta.

Adventure, danger, and violence all blend together to create a fast-paced action powered story that advances the arc, further builds on this incredible world, but most importantly gives us hints as to what’s to come.

Magic Stars is an exhilarating AND informative read that only further fuels my need for the next book in the series-Magic Binds-set to release in 2016.

Short and sweet, my only real complaint is that this could very easily have worked as a full fledged novel ala Gunmetal Magic. Very much a companion piece to the kate Daniels series this isnt a good starting place for newbies, however for those like myself who have been following from the beginning there is a real treat in store as this short story manages to pack in much more in the way of surprises and character reveals then the size would suggest.

Told from the POV of Derek Gaunt Kates and Curran's Faithfull side kick from the main series its set over the course of a single night its about Derek's Quest to avenge the murder of a friend a straight forward seeming mission that becomes ever more complicated as renegade witches, Kates Daughter Julia and Monsters out of Slavic Folk Tales are dragged in for possibly City ending Events.

Thats more then most need to more but because there more i wish to talk about i am adding a spoiler section below dont read if you either havent read the story or hate spoilers

Spoilers Below Beware:

Seriously Spoilers:

I have thought that the KD series like most was coloured by Kates Perceptions especally of those around them it was hard to see if that was true previously because the novellas starring Jim and dali and Gunmetal magic featuring Andrea and Raphael were so focused with there main characters romantic issues and featured characters thet werent as front and centre as often as Derek who has been there since Book One that it was hard to see what differences there were between Kates and theirs views at least in any Major ways though short Magic Stars more then anything previously confirms my views

Derek as seen by Kate is loyal and tough, young but solid maybe a bit over eager in early books, strong accorded respect due to his life long closeness to Curran, basically his ward, hurt fro an incident when he was captured and tortured and had molten metal poured on his face, which i always thought or at least felt Kate down played she never really acknowledges bad scarring or anything like that, yet she does acknowledge a marked increae in his intimidation factor in later books. Another thing that puzzled me is what Derek actually does apart from helping Kate out Occaissionly while he helps Kate out at Cutting Edge every one else else had other things going on since due to his injuries Derek Career as a Undercover Operative was over nothing seemed to fill the gap i just thought it was thought it was just going to be one of those unexplained things thankfully i was wrong.

From the very start of the story Derek is portrayed as a killer savage and comfortable with violence from his quick dispatch of 4 gangsters and his slower questioning and killing of the fifth from his own thoughts about these events we now know his been acting as Currans enforcer and Hitman, and comes across as a harder and colder character then as seen by Kate, which is proably due ,apart from Kates own willingness to see those close to her in the best light possible, to Derek's mentality which is very much Us verus Them, walking the tight rope of control a Horrific Childhood and Later events have made Derek struggle with his inner loup, when a shapeshifter loses control and becomes a abnormally strong psychopathic cannabalistic spree kiler, and seems to exist on a borderline state which is sensed and even smelled by other shape shifters, that along with his status as The Beastlord's/ Currans Wolf,( notably different from Julie who is seen as his daughter ), cast a new light on all those times in the KD series when Kate ( who has been portrayed as straight forward, if very smart, and a bit blind to the sublities of Pack Politics) saw another shapeshifter back down from Derek or act afraid.

This also confirms why Derek isnt the Wolf Alpha damaged from his traumas and how he is now perceived by others, Derek is a lone wolf uncomfortable with others including Pack, another relationship that is shown to be very important th him is Julie, kates and Currans Daughter,
he treats her as a equal and while their relationship, long term fans of the series ship them both, is shown as a plationic she is sixteen he is twenty hints are dropped subtle on his part not so subtle on hers that this could change with a some time but apart from the age difference it is very argueable that with the scarring both mentally and emotional thet he carries from his torture and mutalition, which it must be said is shown as being more severe by far in both cases then has ever being shown in the main series, that he is in any way ready for a relationship,

Julie is portrayed as a stronger more mature character then she has so far as been shown in the main series, partly due to being around Derek i would imagine since he is trying to see her as a child which she obviously doesnt want him to, and another case of Kates blindness to the faults and strengths of those closet to her. Acting as Kates Heralds, without her knowledge, and in obvious communication with roland Kates Father previously just hinted at, Julie is developing both magically and as a fighter and as a character, this Short shows how those closest to Kate hide from her what they think would make her uncomfortable, it should be noted how Julie and Derek, apart from the emotional stuff, seem to have a great deal of respect and honesty going on.

since it is so short i wont touch the plot directly so

Spoilers End

for fans of the series more then anything else, by far, this is no jokes, no kidding, a must read

This was sixty pages that were packed full of amazing. This was my first Kat Daniels novella and I was not disappointed. This little book probably will make me go back and read all the other novellas that I've neglected.

This book stars Derek (The Grey Wolf) and Julie, who has appointed herself with the title of Kate's Herald. You know, like how Hugh was Roland's Herald. Many connections between those two concepts were made. We also find out that Julie knows way more than Kat thinks she does. It becomes very apparent that Julie knows many secrets thanks to Roland (view spoiler).

Derek and Julie go on a mission to avenge a family that was killed for a mysterious rock. The duo comes across many obstacles and villains along the way, but my personal favorite (because I'm an extreme Odyssey fangirl) was the letavista, which essentially is a siren that lures men to their deaths. Yet when Derek gets lured in by the beautiful enchantress, something very unexpected happens (view spoiler). This is the moment my fangirl heart exploded and made me say a prayer that IA continues on with this Grey Wolf series.

Let me be the first to say that Julie being sixteen and Derek being twenty does not bother me. Please Iced haters, put down your pitchforks.

1.) This is a post apocalyptic world.
2.) Julie has been through so much, she most certainly does not have the mentality of a sixteen year old.
3.) Derek has proved himself time and time again that he is a really good guy who Kat and Curran can trust.
4.) They haven't done anything, yet.
5.) It is only four years.

Regardless of these five points, I'm sure many readers will have a big problem with this story because of the ages of them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but for me: I love Julie and Derek together and I will ship it until the day IA stops writing.

This was a wonderful novella featuring Derek and Julie. There was tons of action in here, some interesting magic, and some humor. I really enjoyed it a lot and would definitely recommend to fans of urban fantasy.

This is the first book in the Grey Wolf series. Derek is now a lone wolf and, when people he love start being murdered, he takes to the streets to hunt their killers. Julie has been training her magic talent in secret and is determined to help Derek with his mission in any way she can. Their trials lead them into battles with some interesting creatures and involve a new crazy magical item.

This novella can be read as a stand alone, but it's nice if you have read the Kate Daniels books so you have some additional background on the characters.

There was a lot of magic, action, crazy creatures, and fun witty banter throughout this book. This novella packs in all the wonderful things I love about the Kate Daniels series but also lets the reader get to understand Derek and Julie a bit better.

Overall a very engaging and entertaining start to a new spin off series from the Kate Daniels world. I love Derek and Julie as characters so it was wonderful to learn more about them. I also really enjoyed all the action, magic, and crazy magical creatures. As with all of the Andrews books there is some excellent humor throughout as well. Highly recommended to fans of urban fantasy.

Kate Daniel shorts are always magical. You don't necessarily have to read the Kate books to get them. And if you read the Kate books you don't have to read them, there is sometimes a general nod to them sometimes in the main story. So why are you reading them? You're reading them for the sheer joy of the world and characters the Andrews team has created. Magic Stars, to its credit, does more then just deliver comfort food. It expands on Derek! Which is really all I need to know. Plus, Julie is growing on me.

Despite it being super short, it feels like a full blown Kate Daniels book. (Well kind of.) I really hope there will be more Derek short stories. I loved that tantalizing tease about . . . well I'm not going to spill the beans. I'm very curious where Julie and Derek's relationship will go. To be honest I like Julie with another from a different short. I enjoy the sibling comradery of Derek and Julie.

As usual Andrews creates an awesome mythology and I loved the mythical creatures introduced. As a fairly new introduction to the shorts for the Daniels verse I think this is a pretty great place to start. I've only read two so far—yes, including this one—and I know I have to seek out more. (Though technically this is supposed to be the start of the Grey Wolf series, it's still part of the Kate reading material to me.)

Sexual Content: Some sexual humor, clean.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

Nice fast paced story staring Julie and Derek. Local murder leads the two to a confrontation with power hungry local. Interesting building on Julie's infatuation with Derek the wolf. We also get some new insights in to Dereks character and some possible lines for future developments in the main story line in the Kate Daniel books.

~ 5 Magic Stars ~

Magic Stars is a novella in the Kate Daniels series and one you don’t want to skip; because so much is revealed about two fan-favorite characters.

Before picking this one up you should be up to date on the Kate Daniels series; because the author does recap some important events.

This story leads Derek and Julie to team up and they make an excellent team, maybe something more will develop. Only time will tell. I have always enjoyed how detailed the author gets in her stores and the mythology brought into this one was great.

We finally get to see into Derek’s head. Many fans, especially me, have been concerned for the Boy Wonder. As things are going he’s in a dark place and we finally get to see how much harder his struggles are. We learn so much in Magic Stars.

Last, we learn what Julie has been up to. Besides her lessons with Kate, learning to use her tomahawk, she’s occasionally hang out with Roland when Kate’s not looking. Oh My!!

A lot is revealed and gears you up for the next installment Kate #9, so enjoy! Fangirl and boy yourself out on this amazing novella.

My Review:
Overall: 4.5
Performance: 4.75
Story: 4.25

Ooh, I cannot express just how excited about this novella. It promises good things to come in this world and I like the hints that are here. Derek and Julie....OMG, YES!!

This is a really short novella, but there is so much goodness throughout it. Hints at what might be to come. Derek is 20. Julie is 16. YES, I do like where this is going. If you are a fan of the Kate Daniels world and like me...sad about the upcoming end to that series...then you simply MUST read this one. That way you can be just as excited as me!

Loved this...and it had an interesting story, too. Like I said...just a lot fit into really very few words. Fantastic!!

I love the Kate Daniels series, so having Magic Stars a novella in the series was a Christmas treat. In this book though, we get to see Julie, Kate’s ward and Derek, former teen wolf extraordinaire in action as they track down a killer, but encounter more than they expect.

It’s hard to review something this short, if you already follow this series than this is a fantastic bite size treat, I think it took about 90 mins to read, and you get the bonus of finally having something from Derek’s POV. If you haven’t read this series, you need to get on it and pick up Magic Bites and enter the world of Kate Daniels and the Beast Lord.

This was full of action and magic, and I hope a hint of what is to become as we see Julie and Derek working together to bring down the bad guy, encountering all sorts of magical hazmat along the way. It’s certainly whetted my appetite for more and I can’t wait to get my hands on whatever Ilona Andrews brings out next.

This is another fantastic addition to the world of Kate Daniels that is focused on Derek and Julie! I loved this book and cannot wait for more! Julie has grown into an amazingly strong, and beautiful character who can kick butt right alongside the best of them! Derek is still just as strong and amazing a character. I loved this story because they both had a mission which they were successfully able to complete together. These two make and amazing team, reminding me of when Kate and Curran first met. Julie is only 16 years old while Derek is 20, so there is nothing ever inappropriate happening in this story. It is going to be very interesting to see where these two will go, especially with Julie being trained by Roland.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!

Derek is the one character I couldn’t wait to get his own story!  From the moment he was introduced, and Kate put him in his place, you just had to love him.

In Magic Stars, Derek and Julie are on a mission together to save the city once again.  Julie and Derek; a story line I want to see more of, especially when she is older.  I think the fact that she is 16 and off limits, is just building the anticipation for when she is of age.  A 4-year age gap isn’t much.

The story was fast paced with non-stop action and a good start to a new series....Sara

It's a novella so I should expect some missing information but they jumped from one place to another. It was distracting. The story needed to be a little longer.

I like this author and I like these characters - in this and other stories. I just didn't like this story and (spoiler) bothered me, but I'm sure that won't be a problem for other fans.

Also, a few grammer/spelling/word choice errors. Not many but they jerked me out of the story.

I don't know how to start this review without spoiling you guys. It was so good. So. Good.

I've had my head in textbooks the last few weeks so I didn't know that Magic Stars was even a thing. When I found out that story was from Derek's POV and it had Julie in it too, I did a happy dance.

Derek has had a rough life, he had to kill his father after he turned loup. But Curran saved and trained him. Then Derek worked for Jim as a spy of sorts because he was so handsome, he could anyone to talk to him. Then Derek almost died and was left with a scarred face and broken voice. He switched roles in the Pack and formed a close bond with Kate and is known was Curran's wolf. He has the potential to be wolf alpha if he wasn't labeled a lone wolf after leaving the Keep with Kate and Curran.

She sat up straigher. "Will you stop bossing me around?"

"Stop doing stupid crap, and I'll stop."

Julie is Kate's kid. Julie has had a rough childhood too. Kate found her living on the streets when she was 12. Things happened that almost cost Julie her life but through magic Kate saved her but there's a price for the magic that was used.

Derek and Julie have been close since their near death experiences. And I've hoped that their friendship would bud into a romance. Julie is 16 and Derek is 20; not a big age difference but at their ages it's still too big for anything real to happen.

"Sorry I scared you," he said as they left the building.

She rolled her eyes. "You're not that scary."

Relief washed through him. He bared his fangs at her, pretending to snarl.

"Ew. Drool. Nothing you do scares, me Derek. Deal with it."

"I'll have to try harder then."

"You do that."

Derek and Julie work together to find the killers of a family and found out what they were after that warranted them killing the whole family. It was like reading a Kate and Curran adventure. There was action, blood (lots of blood), snark and magic. Plus a big lead up to the future for both Derek and Julie.

These two are Kate and Curran's mini-mes in so many ways. It's easy to see Derek becoming the Beast Lord when he's older and Julie has been training in magic and she could give Kate a run for her money when she comes fully into her own power.

Andrews' has only wet my appetite for these two. I hope they have a full-length novel in the future when they've grown up and are ready for a HEA.

The Wolf and Herald are not to be missed! One click your copy NOW!!

If you were looking forward to something finally happening between Julie and Derek, you will be greatly disappointed. The storytelling is as action-packed as ever but the short story does nothing to further the larger Epic tale. Except for some information regarding Julie and her magic feel free to skip this one if you are on a budget.

Great short story where Julie and Derek are the main characters and, in the end, we long to see them together and hope for Ilona Andrews to skip some years in the plot....A bad warlock, a big hunter and a secret stone all together to create a novella hard to forget and to handle the waiting time for the next Kate&Curran's story.

As always, Ilona Andrews is a 'must buy' for me. Hard to believe 'our' little Julie is growing up to be such a strong, capable woman. (I know, I know...it's really just fiction, but....) Love the interaction between her and Derek. The story is well written, fun, and not to be missed for fans of the series.

An amazingly exciting, action packed novella written mainly from our favourite wolf shifter, Derrick's POV. The interaction between him and Julie is just captivating. As is the insight the storey provides into Derrick's views of himself and the world around him. Kate's talented adopted daughter, Julie, shows a maturity and growth of character that gives us hints of how she will develop in the future, while still leaving us nervous as to which road she will follow. This is the best of the off shoot novellas as yet. It not only adds depth to both the characters and to Kate Daniels World as a whole, but it also sets the stage for some exceptional storylines in the next books. An excellent read that should not be missed. I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I checked this book out from my local library. I love this series, and Derek has always been one of my favorite characters in the Kate/Curran series. It was also nice to see Julie coming into her own as a magic user. Nice, fast-paced plot, and a good continuation of the series with a good side-story that highlights many of Derek’s insecurities and strengths.

If you’ve never read an Ilona Andrews book, or anything relating to the Kate Daniels world, then this book is not for you. Not because you won’t enjoy it, but because of spoilers and the fact that this is not the best moment to meet Derek and Julie for the first time. As someone who loves this series/world, I heartily recommend going back to the beginning and starting with Magic Bites, because the Andrews team have done an amazing job throughout building up one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series combing strong characters, incredible world-building, clever use of world (and I mean world not just north western European or Classical Greek) mythology and excellent story telling. I love this series for a reason, and to understand that fully you’re better off starting at the beginning.

Okay, so with that public service announcement out of the way – Derek has a book! Not just any book, but one told from inside his head! Derek has always been fascinating to me. From the foolishly cocky wolf in book one, to the warrior he became and all the bad stuff that followed, Derek is compelling. It’s easy to forget how young he still is, so one thing I really enjoyed in this novella is how he also struggles with his relative youth compared to all he’s been through. Like all Team Andrews’ first person characters, Derek has a strong voice throughout and I loved how his wolf side is very clear. Not to mention how he differs from other shifters because of his childhood.

Then there’s Julie. Even though in more recent Kate books it seemed to me as though Julie might have given up on Derek a little to threat-flirt with Ascanio a lot, there’s still a bond there, so I wasn’t surprised to find them teaming up in this novella. And what a team they make. Julie is definitely taking after Kate in the all-knowing, kick-ass, magic-wielding brigade, but even though she’s had it rough growing up she’s more vulnerable than Kate and, while cynical, she isn’t as hard. Yet. She’s a bit cockier too, confident she knows what’s she doing and can cope with everything – when clearly trouble is definitely brewing in a big way.

I loved how she and Derek worked together, how she grounds him, while he provides her with someone trustworthy to talk to. They’re both still pretty young, but they have clear strengths and a desire to protect those they love. And aren’t afraid of a little violence when it heads there way, as it always will in this post-apocalyptic Atlanta.

The plot itself is as clever as I always expect from this world, starting out so simply and gradually winding deeper. There’s a lot of fighting and running around, because Derek is a wolf on the edge and violence is what he’s used to, while Julie’s no slouch when it comes to making use of her tomahawks. It kept me hooked from the first line to the last and even though it was short I didn’t feel cheated.

Fans will likely read it anyway because it’s Derek, and newcomers are best off saving it for later when they know a little more about this world – although technically you can read this straight out, since the important pieces are recapped (except Julie’s particular reaction to mermaids), but you’ll enjoy it more if you’re more familiar with everything. Whenever you read it expect strong characters, a fast-paced plot that unwinds in occasionally unexpected ways, with a wolf who truly feels the call of the wild and a teenage girl tackling some pretty powerful magic. If that sounds like your kind of read, then welcome to the Kate Daniels world. This was only the first of the Grey Wolf books, which leads me to hope that there will be more coming from Derek in the future. I can’t wait.

In true Andrews fashion the book was amazing. It is about 100 pages long but it felt like 10 I read it so fast. There is, surprisingly for its length, a healthy amount of world building and yet the story feels well paced. The characters are, well it's Derek and Julie, but for those of you not familiar with the books, it has just enough of a taste to be curious about Julie and an interesting glimpse into the mind of Derek. I never really wanted a Derek book but I found myself unable to resist his dark, scarred mind. The actual story line is quick and intriguing, perfect for a novella its size. Excellent writing, transporting us to the amazing post-shift Atlanta and her interesting residence. Well done!

Ugh I'm stopping just a little bit in. I really do not enjoy these authors' habit of endless descriptions of weapons or the many many many many pages describing each battle or altercation. I find it so tedious that i just scroll rapidly through many pages just to get through it . I find it hard to enjoy a book when I'm rapidly scrolling through great chunks of it. Which is really unfortunate because otherwise I really enjoy the voice of these books in general and the skill with which they're written.

What can I say, Julie and Derek made a fine starting of a couple. Kind of like Kate and Curran would have been in their teens and it was freaking wonderful.

Add to an already awesome story a tale of revenge and this makes it pretty much perfect, somebody has killed a family and they must pay.

I could write more but with a story of only 64 pages the chances of a spoiler is too great so let me just say that this may be the best 64 pages I have read in years (ever?), get it and enjoy it.

5 Stars for a 64 pages story??? WTF?? Only the Ilona Andrews team could pull this off and make it look easy.

I swear this author could write my grocery list and manage to make it sound amazing. I've yet to be disappointed by an Ilona Andrews novel or short story.

This story focused on Julie and Derek and did an excellent job of expanding the Kate Daniels world while remaining true to the characters. Julie, while growing in maturity, still had many moments where she displayed type (well, typical
For Julie) teen behavior. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into Julie's relationship/interactions with Roland and can't wait to see what the future hold for her!

A few things to know in advance:

1. You CANNOT skip this novella. I'm not saying that b/c LOVE the Andrews (which I bloody well do). I'm saying that b/c at least THREE major events take place in this book.

2. We finally get in Derek's head. A lot of you have been concerned about Boy Wonder for awhile now. As the series progresses, he gets more and more withdrawn, more and more . . . cardboard. This is worrisome. We know the circumstances surrounding his entrance to the Pack, and, just like his face since the rakshasas got ahold of him in MAGIC STRIKES, they aren't pretty.

What we didn't know is how much harder he struggles for equilibrium than the average shapeshifter. How useless he feels now that he can no longer charm important information out of persons of interest for Pack security. How he's reconciled himself to a Lone Wolf's existence.

In MAGIC STARS, we learn all that and so much more.

3. We learn what Julie's been up to. Besides learning to wield tomahawks and occasionally hanging out with Roland when Kate's not looking.

Dollface has been BUSY.

Our story opens with Derek ambushing a group of men who killed a family Kate and co. did business with. It's only his desire to know why these men murdered the Iveses that keeps him from slaughtering ALL of them as soon as he kicks their door down.

They were mercenaries hired to retrieve a rock for a warlock named Caleb Adams.

But they didn't recover the rock. *whispers* Maybe b/c they killed the Iveses rather than asking them where it was. Eejits.

Whatever. Derek heads back to the Iveses' home to look for it himself---If Caleb Adams wants it, Caleb Adams isn't going to get it.

Caleb Adams is goin' down.

Where does Julie come into all this?

Read it and find out. Suffice it to say that this is definitely a team effort, and, man alive, do they make an excellent team. *waggles eyebrows*

Mythology-wise, I loved the Fae feel of this novella's obstacles. I suspect at least two of the creatures have their roots in Russian fairy tales (probably all three), but Fae-like creatures are Fae-like creatures no matter whence they hail.

But none of that matters, b/c you have to read it anyway.

If you read Kate Daniels , I don't highly recommend this book . . . I INSIST you read it. And all the real fangirls (and boys) will. So next year, when you're gearing up to read KATE #9, and you see a bunch of posts like, "OMG, what's Hugh (<------hell yes, I did just name drop) going to do now that _______?!" or, "Is Julie going to tell Kate ________?" you won't get to spew your righteous anger b/c spoilers, b/c NOT SPOILERS. Not if you're current.

So get current. *winks*

I really liked the chance to get into other character's minds, usually in the Kate Daniels -verse you are mainly in her head (with a few exceptions Barabas!).

Ilona Andrew had hinted the Julie had been "talking/communicating" with Kate's dad...if you haven't read that book that's all I'm going to say....and getting some additional insight was very informative!

As a fan of both Derek and Julie, I found this one extremely satisfying! As usual in an Ilona Andrews novella, a lot of action was packed into a relatively short read. Fans of the series will not want to miss this one. I felt that it revealed some big news plot-wise, at least compared to its length. Probably not the best to pick up as an entry to this world, though, because they skipped over all the introduction stuff.

Always worthwhile purchasing this husband/wife team. This is a novella connected to the Kate Daniels series. If you've never read Ilona Andrews and the Kate Daniel series, this isn't a stand-alone book. Do yourself a favor and put this author on your 'must read list. They have several series and all of them are worth reading.

This is a fantastic novella set in the Kate Daniels/Curran world. The background and setting of the story will be much more understanble to you if you have read any of the books set in that world. Derek is the main protoganist, acting as an investigator and enforcer of justice for Curran. He is somewhat-unwillingly partnered up with teenager Julie, Kate and Curran's adopted daughter, to find justice for a murdered family. As usual, the husband and wife team of Ilona Andrews write action and emotion brilliantly in this stand-alone story, which looks to be the beginning of a new series. Something to look forward to!

I love Kate Daniels and her world; it's one of my all-time favorite series. I was excited to read something from Derrick's perspective, but Julie just killed this story for me. I started skim reading a few pages after she got involved. She started out as a sympathetic and interesting character. But since book 5, she's grown progressively more annoying.

She tries and fails (in my opinion) to imitate Kate, and just comes off as trying way too hard to be witty and badass. In this story she's simultaneously an immortal bratty teen who knows everything and does whatever she wants, but with suddenly mature adult abilities that seem to have bypassed the decade or so of training and practice that it should've taken to develop them. Also, don't you know she knows everything so she's like, way ahead of Roland and is secretly spying on him while he trains her? He'll totally accidentally reveal his exploitable weaknesses to this 16-year-old infallible genius. Right. If I were Kate, after going to hell and back again to rescue and safeguard this kid and found out she's been palling around with Roland behind my back, I'd blow a gasket. Probably several.

Super fun look at Derek and Julie- nice to see them on their own (especially Derek). This gives us a peek into Derek's head, which is just a great way to see his character grow and to understand him a bit better. Loved it!

I loved it. I really wasn't sure what to expect but the character development was amazing for such a short story!!! I love this world, and I look forward to their next book as always. They always manage to exceed my high expectations.
