Interesting story, based in history. But, the ending was quite quick and might have gone for a further chapter to demonstrate how Dr. Mutter and his collection has currently impacted those in the field of medicine.

An awakening of knowledge untold in the history books~ written as fiction this nonfiction read is a true gift. This book is an interesting and in-depth "story" of an extraordinary man and "his" era in medical history....very hard to put down!

Instantly captures the readers attention and doesn't let go, even during the authors comments at the end. Inspiring content and a story that will pull at your heart strings. One of the best, most interesting non-fiction books I have ever read!
Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife :: The Restored Edition (The World War II Trilogy Book 1) :: Splinter of the Mind's Eye (Star Wars) :: Horus Rising (The Horus Heresy) :: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine

This is a very informative history of early days of medicine in the 1800's. I learned a lot. I also enjoyed seeing and hearing the author on Book TV. She has so much enthusiasm for Dr. Mutter that I knew it would be a wonderful book.

This is one of the best biographies I have read... Early medicine is so interesting. If you are familiar with the Mutter Museum it is a must read. The author paints a compelling story while remaining a biography. I loved the book

For anyone interested in the history of surgery and Philadelphia, then this is th book for you. I have always loved the Mutter museum, but I knew never how instrumental Mutter actually was to the medical world until I read this book. Truly a great read.

This is the story of Peter Dent Mutter who, almost single-handedly changed the direction of American medicine. He overcame much misfortune in his short lifetime. Dr.Mutter is what I wish most doctors were like....kind, respectful of the patient and patient needs. Do yourself a favor....read the book!

Marvelous biography of a forgotten pioneer in American surgical practice who was also a collector of anatomical and disease oddities enabling those of us who will never see them in real life to appreciate medical progress.

I really enjoyed this book, however, it bogged down in certain parts and could get a little boring when it descibed the hospital board. It was best when it dealt with the medical issues of the time period and the surgeries. I did learn a lot. This book is good for fans of "The Knick".

What a wonderful story! This book is a sleeper. Everyone should read about Dr. Mutter, a kindly, brilliant physician and inventor of devices and procedures to make medicine more humane in the 1800's. Among other things, he performed miracles on horribly deformed persons with skill and great sensitivity toward the patient with some procedures that are still well thought of today. As a teacher, his classes of students grew from a handful to hundreds. Unfortunately, Dr. Mutter was plagued by ill health himself and died at an early age. This book is entertaining, yet factual and very hard to put down. Don't let the title put you off. This book is definitely NOT dry!
