Sin duda García Márquez en este libro y en muchos se destaca como los ilustres escritores de la lengua española. En particular el amor en los tiempos del cólera es una ficción de gran humanidad en donde el amor en todas sus formas es magistralmente escrito

I still don't understand why this author was given the Nobel price and a lot more international awards. To me this book and 100 años de Soledad, and one more which name I can't recall about the colonel something etc... are just o.k.

Al terminar de leer este libro, me quedé con la impresión de seguir leyéndolo, de querer más de esta historia. Quizás la esencia de la misma, una promesa de amor que perdura en el tiempo, suene algo cursi para muchos. Pero a veces esas cosas tan simples de imaginar y tan difíciles de encontrar en la vida real son las que nos llevan a soñar en que los amores imposibles muchas veces llegan a ser posibles.

Después de más de cincuenta años después de haberle jurado su incondicional amor, Florentino Ariza logra estar junto a Fermina Daza, a raiz de la muerte de su esposo, un doctor de una familia rica y de alto nivel social. Aunque Florentino no le guardó fidelidad absoluta durante esa espera -era de esperar, ya que de otro modo hubiese sido demasiado inverosímil que permaneciera tantos años solo- este personaje siempre se las ingeniaba para estar cerca de su amor.

Una grandiosa combinación de humor sarcástico -realmente fascinante y magistralmente conjurado por García Márquez-, momentos y frases -llamémosles cursis por no decir románticos- y una historia que mágicamente me llegó a transportar al lugar de los hechos, imaginando cada detalle del entorno de la pareja, desde la comodidad de la casa de Fermina, hasta esa embarcación en la que la pareja de ya ancianos, terminan la historia.

Lo que recuerdo más claramente de este libro es la frase "lo único que no me dolería de morir, sería morir de amor" propia de Florentino, con la cual se puede describir por completo el contexto de la historia.

Uno de los libros que llevaría conmigo a todas partes, y por supuesto, muy recomendable para aquellas personas que se inician en la lectura.

En una ciudad costera colombiana, entre los siglos XIX y XX, en une epoca en que el colera y las guerras civiles iban desangrando a Colombia de forma no muy diferente de como hoy en dia lo hacen las guerras de las drogas y la guerrilla, tiene lugar esta brillante pieza de literatura, obra del ganador del premio Nobel, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
La persona simplista se atreveria a juzgar la novela apenas como una historia de amor, y ciertamente lo es. Pero tambien es mucho mas. Florentino Ariza y Fermina Daza viven separados durante cincuenta annos, a lo largo de los cuales transcurre la historia. Todo el tiempo, Florentino (un hombre extremadamente dramatico que ama la poesia y esta permanentemente vestido con atuendos casi funerarios sin prestar mayor atencion al calor del sol caribenno) se mantiene fiel al amor juvenil por Fermina que siente por dentro, a un mismo tiempo que vive una vida repleta de las mas descabelladas y comicas anecdotas de flirteo y pseudo-amor.

Fermina... bueno, eso es parte de la historia, y no lo voy a echar a perder, pero les puedo decir que le da mucho trabajo al pobre Florentino a lo largo de esos cincuenta annos, en unas ocasiones a sabiendas, en otras sin siquiera sospecharlo.
En todo momento, con el ir y venir de los personajes que me atrevo a llamar 'secundarios', tales como el doctor Juvenal Urbino, el tio Leon XII o Leona Cassiani, hay un personaje omnipresente, como lo es el medio ambiente que rodea a Florentino o Fermina. Hay incontables y exquisitos momentos a lo largo de la novela en que se solidariza con el estado de animo de Florentino, empezando a llover, por ejemplo, si el se siente triste. La sutileza con la cual Garcia Marquez logra esto es definitivamente un acto de genialidad literaria.
La novela resulta una obra que todo lector esta destinado a disfrutar plenamente: una de esas obras que sin duda alguna aguantaran el pasar del tiempo. No en vano es considerado uno de los mejores libros del siglo XX. Y pueden creerme: si no se rien a carcajadas al menos una docena de veces en el transcurso del libro, les va a costar trabajo conseguir ALGO en la vida que los haga reir.
Con los ojos cerrados: comprenlo, y disfrutenlo.

One Hundred Years of Solitude is definitely my favorite book of all times. Since I considered I had read Gabo's masterpiece, I never got to reading Love in the Times of Cholera, until now.

A few days ago, I read Memoria de mis Putas Tristes, which came out about a week ago, and when writing a review, I thought too bad the book is not 900 pages long. Then, hungry for more divine prose and magic realism, I remembered Love in the Times of Cholera. I suddenly had 500 more pages of Gabo.

The book turns out to be a 50+ year long love story, superbly written as most of what Gabo has written. The prose grabs you and does not let you go until the very last line.

Every now and then, one reads a sentence in a book and wonders how much feeling, effort, expeience and luck it takes to word something so beautifully. This does not happen too often, and sometimes you go through numerous books without finding one of these, regardless of who the author is. Well, let me just say that there is one of theses magical sentences in just about every single page of Love in the Times of Cholera. The novel is like a bottle of excellent wine....each sip tastes better than the last one. This book will leave you with a sensation od deep, pleasant intoxication.

How does it compare to One Hundred Years? It's simply different. Even though time is probably the main character in both novels, while there's more magic in One Hundred Years, there's more love and passion in Love in the Times of Cholera.

I am left with the exact same feeling after reading every one of Gabo's boks: how the hell does he do it every time?

Escrita con la maestría bastante conocida de Gabriel Garcia Marquez esta novela se consolida como una de las mejores y de mayor romanticismo de su prolija producción literaria.
El anacronismo y la veracidad de los hechos (nunca ocurrió una epidemia de colera en Colombia entre los siglos XIX e inicios del XX) es baladí debido a que la narrativa te envuelve desde el principio. En cuanto a la época sólo basta establecer que es distante a la nuestra y la mujer no existía más allá del yugo varonil: en su niñez bajo la sombra del padre, y en la mayoria de edad a expensas del esposo.
En aquellos tiempos la sociedad femenina poseía dos rostros. Una que llevaban por dentro, invisible a los demás pero implorando por aflorar; la otra de dominio público, casi siempre impuesta por la mayoria reprimida, obligada a acatar las órdenes masculinas y desesperada por ser otra, libre, capaz de actuar sin temor. Es así como Lorenzo Daza se vale de todos los artificios posibles para aproximar a Fermina Daza, su hija, a un acaudalado, culto, y prometedor médico perteneciente a la alta sociedad lugareña, Juvenal Urbino. Sin desearlo totalmente, Fermina accede a sus peticiones de matrimonio luego de resistir tantas ardorosas batallas. Atrás habia quedado el recuerdo de aquel muchacho lánguido y misterioso a quien había rechazado sin pena ni gloria, al verlo por primera vez, a pesar de haber aceptado ser su novia (por correspondencia, obviamente, pues su padre jamás lo hubiera aceptado, además, el solo hecho de frecuentarse sería motivo de habladurías). Su nombre era Florentino Ariza y la amó siempre: soltera, casada, en la flor de su juventud e incluso en el ocaso de sus días. Para él el amor no era cuestión de tiempo porque jamás pudo olvidarla; la veía en todas sus amantes, en todos sus momentos, percibía su olor en cualquier ambiente por más grande que sea este, la pensaba, la soñaba, vivía para ella ... pues sabía que cuando Fermina enviudara él tendría una segunda oportunidad pero para entonces debería ser lo suficientemente acaudalado y refinado para merecerla.
Florentino tendría su tan ansiada oportunidad ya en el atardecer de su vida, con los años encima y la muerte anunciándosele pero con el corazón aún rebozando de amor por Fermina. Sin embargo, la censura pública los obligaría a ocultar su relación pues una viuda no tenía derecho de rehacer su vida y mucho menos a los 74 años. Es así como, embriagados de amor, se embarcan en una aventura fluvial que les permitiríaamarse lejos del mundo enmascarado, lleno de complejos y mezquindades. Se embarcarían sin retorno por que el no regresar era la única forma de amarse ..... para siempre.

This is my second favorite book of all time (the first is One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad Spanish Version) by the same author). It tells the story of lovesick Florentino, who has waited for the love of his life, Fermina, for 50 years. Fermina was married to Dr. Juvenal Urbino and therefore unavailable. Their love story began through letters. But then Fermina rejects Florentino because she feels their relationship was naive. She is forced to marry Dr. Urbino by her father. When Dr. Urbino dies, Florentino comes back into Fermina's life and tells her he has waited for her all these years. Then, their correspondence continues and their love grows again.

Garcia Marquez has written an amazing love story that employs elements of magical realism. This only make the story better and even more amazing. This love story is as no other, and only Garcia Marquez could have written such an amzing book. The characters are so well written that they come alive in the pages of this book.

I read the book in Spanish and I reccommend that if you understand Spanish, to read this book in its original language. Although the English translation is good, I feel the Garcia Marquez touch, the "it" that makes this story what it is may get lost in the translation.

This is a book that everyone should read and I cannot reccommend it enough.

Desde que Florentino Ariza conoció a Fermina Daza, le juró amor y fidelidad eternos. Al cabo de los años, repasa una vida jalonada de amores ocasionales, su empeño por conseguir un puesto de mando y todos los problemas que le causó la determinación de hacer suya a Fermina.
Mientras, ella hace su vida de madre y esposa de un hombre diferente, sin poder evitar que, poco a poco, la imagen de aquel muchacho con el que durante algún tiempo jugó a los noviazgos cuando eran adolescentes, se le cuele por las rendijas del subconsciente. Las vidas de ambos apenas se cruzan a lo largo de medio siglo. No será hasta el final, ya casi en la vejez, cuando Florentino y Fermina se reencuentren o, más bien, se encuentren por primera vez.

I read somewhere that the admirers of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (a novel that brought the Nobel Prize for Garcia in 1982) would be surprised to know that Gabriel Garcia Marquez has bettered it in the form of "Love in the Time of Cholera". Well, although I found the latter half of it a little cloggy, I was a great admirer of One Hundred Years of Solitude. But after reading Love in the Time of Cholera, I think it's not fair to compare as different works of fiction as these two novels are, and it won't do any good to Garcia as well.
The only thing common to these two novels, however, is the prose of Garcia. He weaves, with the dexterity of a master craftsman, small characters and trifle incidents into the vast fabric of the novels. Effortlessly moving from character to character and incident to incident, he provides small pegs and footholds to the reader so that he could ascend, like a rock-climber, to his colossal literary monuments. This is especially true for Love in the Time of Cholera, where the reader is provided with a spectacular finale and one feels indeed like setting foot at the summit of Mount Everest after reading the novel. This is by far the best ending of a novel that I have read so far.
There are dozens of important characters in Love in the Time of Cholera but I think the two most important protagonists are Love and Time. And both of them are so intricately interwoven together that sometimes it becomes difficult to tell which is which -- like two shrubs that run up the length of a tall tropical tree. The love of Florentino Ariza, a thin and shy boy, for the beautiful but whimsical Fermina Daza is unlike any in the literature. And in order to have her, our hero must overcome time (half a century!), her aloofness and more than 400 love affairs! I guess even Hercules would have given up in face of these obstacles.
Unlike many other great writers, Garcia has little inhibitions. He is not ashamed of hiding emotions or sugarcoating his ideas; he simply does not believe in euphemisms. You can see everything in bare, harsh light: scars, warts, blemishes, all. Reminds one of ... Life.

This is the most beautiful love story I ever red. The main characters are completely different to any other novel. The underdog ends becoming the real hero and the winner. It's tender, intense, fun, sad, surprising and, above all, a tribute to the human nature, to the devotion that can overcome fear, time and odds against in the name of love. Beautifully written; it delivers perfect images of the scenarios and situations in the story. Real and magical, a must read.

I read this many years ago, it is a joy to read in the original Spanish (although I've not tried the translation). I loved the parallel of cholera and love drawn in the book, and the descriptions of the village and their life.

I've given to 4 stars only because I prefer a slightly quicker plot, however I don't normally read this style of book.

Como aqua para chocolate is also an excellent read - although somewhat simpler and shorter.

`El amor en los tiempos del cólera' es una excelente novela que nos cautiva en una trama muy especial donde convergen sentimientos de amor, realismo, sensibilidad y muchos otros elementos que hacen de este libro uno muy singular e importante. Lo recomiendo. También les recomiendo: `Noches azules', `El tiempo escondido' Resurgir de la esvástica, El (Ebook) [Versión Kindle], y `El contrato de Dios'.

Una historia muy simpática y refrescante. Te hace vivir una época de antaño gracias a la manera tan particular que tiene "EL Gabo" en su narrativa.
El eterno enamorado la considerara una hermosa historia de amor, mientras que una persona mas objetiva, podría describir a Florentino como una persona obsesionada.
No lo considero el mejor trabajo de Gabriel García Márquez, pero definitivamente es un muy buen libro.
La pasión con la que describe a cada personaje, hace que brote de ellos una magia particular que te hace quererlos, odiarlos, sentir pena y alegría por ellos, etc.
Gracias Gabriel García Márquez por haber creado una historia tan interesante.

Framed by the Magdalena River, it depicts the patient, although not celibate wait, of Florentino Ariza, for his beloved woman, Fermina Daza. She had married another man. His wait, as long and crooked as the river, prepares his reappearance in the life of this old but young-hearted woman. We do not care how long because the intensity and beauty of their love make minutes, or hours, or days, or years, no matter which, barely sufficient. The translation is superb.

Antes de comenzarlo sabía que me iba a gustar, porque ya había leído varias obras suyas, pero nunca imaginé que llegaría al extremo de no poder soltar el libro ni un minuto, porque una vez que comienzas a leerlo no puedes parar hasta terminarlo. Gabo narra sus historias con tanta magia, con tanto detalle y con tanto cuidado que logra ensimismarnos y meternos en lo más profundo del alma de los protagonistas, haciendo que vivamos la historia como si fuera la nuestra.

Garcia Marquez hace una anatomia profunda del amor de juventud, del amor conyugal, del amor en la vejez, del amor obsesivo, y tantas formas de amor que se dan entre las parejas de todas las epocas y edades. Pero no se imaginen una novela cursi o rosa. Al contrario, es una novela en toda la extension de la palabra, bien escrita, interesante, equilibrada, salpicada de anecdotas, viajes, lugares, epocas. Habla de lo bueno y de lo malo del amor, de una forma muy realista. Solo alguien que ha amado mucho pudo escribir algo asi.

Aunque García Márquez ya había tocado el tema del amor en sus novelas anteriores, no sería muy errado decir que fue de forma tangencial, mientras que esta novela es con todo derecho y a pesar de las suspicacias que podría suscitar la frase, una verdadera historia de amor. Siendo como es el Gabo un escritor tantas veces irónico, lúdico, casi burlesco en sus observaciones, resulta sumamente interesante observar como aborda la historia de un amor al que aún el adjetivo platónico le queda chiquito. Sobra decir que es una novela gigantesca y admirable, y una de las mas recomendadas formas que se ha inventado de invertir el tiempo, incluso tal vez mejor que Harry Poter o El Señor de los Anillos.

Los caracteres centrales son Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza, y Juvenal Urbino, un medico. Fermina rechaza el amor de Florentino y pues se casa con Juvenal. Juvenl ofrece la securidad pero el matrimonio no crea mucho romanticismo. Una retorcida historia desarrolla entre estas personas y otras. I've read many many books from many diffeent authors and beleive me 'El Amor en los Tiempos del Cólera' has no comparisson. It is the best book i've ever read. It shows you real love. The difference between love and company. the different views of love people have and the different views of love the SAME person has. The stages of love, the way it evolves. This story highlights the hurldes that true love can overcome. And that when you are frank with yourself, there is nothing you cannot accomplish. Its a true test of your convictions, and is a story for all hopeless romantics. It showcases that two people can love each other to the point where nothing else matters...

The first and final quarters of this novel are an extraordinary comparative meditation of the infatuated love between two young people, and the realistic--more rewarding friendship-- between two older lovers. Unfortunately, the middle section is slow and uninteresting. However, the lessons discovered at the end are worth some drudgery.

He leido dos veces este libro y sin duda que la emocion y sentimientos que aflora en mi son indescriptibles. Por medio de la excelente narracion de Gabriel Garcia Marquez uno se va envolviendo en el mundo de Fermina Daza y Florentino Ariza, uno sufre el dolor del amor no correspondido y disfruta del reencuentro despues de tantos años. Es una historia maravillosa de paciencia y generosidad, es una historia que nos lleva por los caminos del verdadero amor aquel que espera, aquel que en silencio se va fortaleciendo, aquel que se alimenta de pequeños detalles. Si todos tuviesemos esa capacidad de amar!!!.

El amor en los tiempos del colera is one of the richest fictions in our universal literature. Is evocative, highly poetic, just a jewel made out of words. Garcia Marquez knows how to create exactly the perfect narrative.

Esta es una historia de amor en que el personaje principal, al no verse correspondido se la pasa por más de cincuenta años esperando a que Fermina por fin le preste atención. Es una lástima que su durante todos esos años Florentino no vive ni disfruta su vida, sino que se convierte en una sombra a la espera de que su amor por fin se digne en notar su existencia. Por otro lado, el autor nos describe una sociedad llena de perjuicios en los cuales las mujeres tenían que casarse jóvenes y obviamente vírgenes para que su reputación no se viera mancillada. No es para nada la mejor novela de GGM. No está de más leerla, pero no despertó en mi ninguna emoción...

Divino!!! Mi libro favorito de este gran autor colombiano. Genial e inteligente, cuenta la historia del verdadero amor entre sus 2 protagonistas. La película de Hollywood se queda corta al lado de esta genialidad.

Quien no haya leído a García Márquez, definitivamente ha estado perdiendo el tiempo. En esta historia, Gabo nos envuelve en un ato de sentimientos desgarradores y contradictorios, ¿Debería el amor permanecer para siempre?, ¿Le pertenecemos a la persona que nos ama?, ¿Es un pecado haber amado y olvidado?. Fermina se encuentra ante dos amores que darán todo por ella, hay mucho dolor, pero no hay sufrimiento. Sólo hay una cosa mejor que amar y ser amada: Amar y ser amada por dos hombres como los que amaron a Femina Daza.

Cualquier obra de Gabriel Garcia Marquez es una gozada y esta si cabe todavía más.
La sensibilidad del autor y el contenido de TODOS los personajes la hacen genial.

This is a love story. Yes. It describes with colorful and beautiful words a city that once was the center of the Spanish conquest, with Viceroys and nobility. Cartagena at the turn of the century, is only a shadow of this glorious past. But what makes this book unforgettable is the way you can see word by word, that the power of love is nothing without the element of destiny. A magnificent river, luxurious river ships, alligators sunbathing on the river banks, balloon rides and horse carriages. A fantastic story about all things long gone.

Las novelas más inspiradoras sobre la mujer latinoamericana son "La casa de los espíritus" de Isabel Allende, "El amor en los tiempos del cólera" de García Márquez, "Las hermanas Agüero" de Christina García, "La casa en Mango Street" de Sandra Cisneros y la que acaba de aparecer sobre la mujer de la inmigración, "El amor de Carmela me va a matar" de Eduardo González Viaña.

Encontrar este libro en mi pais me llevo un año ya que estaba agotado cuando al fin lo logre obtener me di cuenta porque en una entrevista que le hicieron recientemente para un documental de television a Garcia Marquez afirmo que era el mejor libro que habia escrito,no cien años de soledad como la gente piensa sino este libro,la verdad que he leido la mayoria de ellos y estoy de acuerdo que este es el mejor que ha escrito hasta el dia de hoy.EXCELENTE

Es imposible no compartir algo con Florentino Ariza o Fermina Daza. Si en algún lugar alguien tenía que explicar cómo es que es universal el amor y cómo se vuelve tan incoprensible para los que no se han contagiado de esa eterna enfermedad (y aún para los que la padecen) ésta es una lectura obligada.

Hace mucho que no leia Gabriel Garcia Marquez, la ultima vez fue en el colegio 100 años de soledad y fue tedioso, hoy me reconcilie con Garcia Marquez, sus descripciones son tal reales que hasta los aromas se hacen realidad, realmente nos damos cuenta de la calidad del escritor. UNa novela romantica rapida de leer que te cautiva desde las primeras paginas...totalmente recomendable

I am sure this book is worth more than one star but thanks to the store I have no way of finding out. I have severe Macula Degeneration. I learn Soanish by listening to a Spanish novel and then checking out sentences I do not understand in its Kindle edition. Unlike a hard coverbookmi can enlarge the Kindle book sufficiently to read it. However, because I live in Canada the store parvenus me from downloading the Kindle El Amor en los tiempos...... I have dual Citizenship and for years have bought 2 credits a month in both North America and Britain, mostly to have the store remove my Credits because I have not used them. I have not used them because the store makes it virtually impossible (Despite spending hours with your "Help" be Ii use the same email for both accounts., despite repeated requests I cannot speak to anyone sufficiently senior in the store who might have the authority to sort out the mess.

Definitivamente no es el mejor libro de Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Los he leido casi todo. Le falto el realismo magico y alguna pequena referencia a Macondo, que tanto caracteriza sus novelas. Tiene una buena narrativa, que te envuelve y no quieres dejar a un lado el libro. Me gusta la manera que el convierte el pasado en presente, logras entender todo el trama de la novela como si el tiempo no existiera.

I think the book shows a lot of colombian background and the features of the people and nature are quite amazing described, so i think you have to read all in spanish to understand the really meaning of the book. I recomend to read that book to everybody who believes that the love never dies.

This is one of my favorites by Garcia Marquez and has his magical surreal style. It is a love story in which the main characters meet in their youth, and finally come together when they are old. Set in the steamship era in the city of Cartagena, Colombia, probably just before antibiotics were available to treat colera.

I loved this book because I have lived the same experience, yes one can wait all a lifetime to join up with the beloved and I am still waiting and I love him like the first day, it's an incredible book that describes what many of us live but don't have the courage to admit

Amor en Tiempos de Colera es uno de los mejores libros que he leido hasta ahora. Es una gran historia de amor que en realidad te envuleve.

Lei el libro en ingles y creo que se pierde un poco de la riqueza del lenguaje en la traduccion, pero aun asi pienso que es un libro excelente.

Podria leerse de una sentada sin comer ni beber.... Mejor que Cien An~os de Soledad y cualquier otro, a pesar de ser largo. Recomendado para quienes les gusta las historias de amor y bueno de todo un poco, muy bien hecha e impredecible....

Es aburrido ! aburrido. Que clase de historia de amor la protagonista no le hace caso y se la pasa 50 años esperandola mientras fornica con cuanta mujer se le atraviesa. Eso es amor ? Y le hace caso hasta que esta sola y vieja ?
