This is a powerful book! It offered so much food for thought, was certainly empowering to think how much control we have over our health...a very different approach than traditional Western medicine.

This is a very accessible, enjoyable read... lots of stories and detailed explanations... but also includes extensive references that back up the information presented in the book. Gabor's work is something that really needs to get out there to a wider audience; it has the potential to change millions of lives and to save many lives.
Some people mistake Gabor's explanations for the origin of disease, addiction, and other issues as blaming the parent; this isn't the case at all. He simply documents patterns that are passed down from generation to generation, and backs it up with extensive clinical research published by numerous authors in dozens of the most prestigious scientific publications.

I came across Gabor Maté talking superb good sense about drug addiction on a podcast in the series 'Ideas'. Got the book and never regretted it. I will never regret my time with this book either. He writes simply and directly. He explains well. There are anecdotes presented as examples, but they never overwhelm the book, neither are they chosen for shock value or hopelessness. There is no quiz at the back of the book. This is a refreshingly no nonsense read about the connection between stress, especially the childhood variety, and illness. I guess I could be more effusive about this book that is giving me so much, but I am very Canadian and a bit held in about such things. Perhaps I can change a bit of that.

Dr. Matte makes his point with careful, touching examples
Carefully argued, very well written.
This book takes illness out of the hands of the drug companies and forces us to look at how we live our lives in relation to our health. It is revolutionary stuff.

a lot of why people get sick, even though they may be leading very healthy lifestyles. The emotional factor is ignored by allopathic as well as holistic medicine the majority of the time.
I am one of those people who needed to read this and hopefully avert troubles. I am doiong something to change the way I deal with my stresses.
(Started tapping. Tapping the Robert Smith way.. short and yet potent)

This wonderful little book answered a question about why my good friend "Jennie" has MS - she never says No to people, will do just about anything anyone asks of her. When I asked her if she was like that, she said she virtually Never says No to anyone. Since then, she's actually starting to be more selective, knowing it's OKAY to say No to people!

Very interesting perspective about the connection between our minds and bodies from a physician who sounds like he takes the time to really get to know his patients. This aligns with other books that have been exploring that connection and the notion that our internal environment - individual biochemistry that is influenced by stress and our thinking - can have as much of an impact on our health as the external environment.

Gabor Mate has written a book that details how we have become limited in our lives and how we can move those limits. His knowledge of the body, mind, emotion connection is compelling in opening my mind to my own possibilities. His extensive experience with clients makes for real life stories which break down my resistence to this new information and unlock my own ability to move forward. I am amazed at how much I have changed due to 'When the Body Says No'. I can't imagine not knowing this information.

Gabor links early attachment issues to stress and stress to adult pathologies. What serves as a short term coping pattern – long term becomes self-destructive pathology. A must read. Michael Mendizza

So much great information! I bought this book because I have a physical condition that I strongly believed to be stress related. I was shocked to learn how little physical risk factors play in disease and that stress is actually the biggest risk factor. Some of the biggest stressors are repressed anger, unresolved childhood trauma, and just a general daily feeling of helpless frustration. The knowledge in this book is worth every penny of the price. However, this book will be priceless to those individuals who read it, heed its warnings, and make some changes in their lives Before they get sick!!

Great information on the stress connection to disease. I recommend this as reading for anyone experiencing unexplained symptoms, aches, fatigue, and someone looking for answers when it seems that the doctors treat the person as crazy.

Dr. Mate makes a very convincing case for the connection between chronic and debilitating conditions, and the stress of repressed emotions. He explains, for the average reader, the science and the physiology behind the toll that this constant stress takes on our bodies and brains. MS, ALS, cancer, Alzheimer's, chronic pain, fibro, IBS... you name it, he's looking at it, and he isn't the only medical professional who believes in this mind-body connection. This could be depressing - or it could be life-affirming, if you're willing to be accountable for your mental, emotional, and physical health. It's pretty powerful information, one way or another.

I greatly appreciated all the research and work that Dr. Mate did to write this book. He points to study after study that shows us the link between the physical level and the emotional/mental levels of our being. How successful have we been in finding cures for cancer, autoimmune disease, Alzheimer's, etc., after pouring tons of money into research? That should tell us something. We need to expand our search to the other levels of our being. As an EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Practitioner, I benefited greatly from all the personal interviews he did with people with serious and chronic illness. It helped me to see more clearly some of the patterns that I encounter in my work of emotional release. Perhaps in the near future Dr. Mate or others will take this search further and explore the connection to the Spiritual level. I believe that is the foundation. However, I applaud Dr. Mate for his deep and genuine commitment to solving the health issues of the ill and for valuing this above the status quo of his profession. I recommend this book in my own website, so that says how much I value it.

While I used to love teaching, I became exhausted and burnt out. I was getting really sick and had a host of health problems. This book helped me realize that my body was saying "Hell no, I can't do this anymore!" I retired early and have a whole new lease on life! Since then I've noticed other people around me getting cancer and other health problems because they are too nice and don't listen to the messges their body is giving them. I even had a cat....my sweetest, nicest cat....who died of a mammary tumor. She was too nice, and the book says that often it is nice people like us who end up getting sick. To thine own self be true!

Dr. Gabor Mate writes a wonderful book about the mind-body connection and about how too much stress and failure to take care of yourself can lead to serious illness.
I'm not sure I buy all his arguments, but he makes a compelling argument that is definitely worth reading

Page 247: "Anger is the energy Mother Nature gives us as little kids to stand forward on our own behalf and say "I matter". Emotional repression can be a contributing factor to multiple illnesses: cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, prostate cancer, melanoma, chrons disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS, alzheimers and asthma to name a few. This is an 'easy-to-understand' book on exploring the stress-disease connection.

A powerful explanation of why we are addicted and why diseases manifest in us as a person as we are unable to express negative emotions openly or to another. Hidden feelings and emotions have detrimental consequences.

What a brilliant book! It is an excellent depiction of how our bodies function, and that most of us in the Western hemisphere are cut off from the neck. In that, we don't feel our emotions. The answers lie in our bodies, and that illness is not a random condition that affects people. Rather there is a pattern of who gets sick and who doesn't. And most of the reasons lie in our childhood and how we were programmed to deal with our emotions and stress. His teachings closely mirror Alice Miller's theories, who wrote about the exact same teachings in her books: "The body never lies and the Drama of the gifted child., etc." I firmly believe in what Dr. Mate writes, as well as Alice Miller's teachings. In the end, we need to learn to be true to ourselves, and that means feeling our emotions all the way through. It's not stress or emotions that cause sickness, but rather the suppression of our feelings. The energy doesn't go anywhere, but stays in our bodies. And if we aren't conscious of it, and don't deal with the emotion, then it manifests itself in illnesses. If you liked Alice Miller's teachings, then Dr. Mate is the perfect sequel.

Really, really great book, really gets to the core connection of disease and emotions. I bought a second copy to share with others. Explains very well some of the real causes of disease, stress and emotional suppression. Love all Gabor's books. Insightful, easy to read.
