Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard (1990-11-21)

At the conclusion of my second reading (23 years after the first), I continue my dedication to this fascinating creation. I have carried visions and quotes from Tinker all of these years and will continue to share them with those who I care about. I am putting a copy in my grandchildren's Mimi box.

I originally read this book, in the tree flesh about 9 years ago and recently purchased this audio book in search of something nostalgic, familiar that soothe my ire to an from work on the 110 Freeway. The recording itself is not bad, the speaker's voice is what you would want to hear nature narrations told in. Although when going through a mid-youth crisis as I am, I found myself having to skip back tracks often, attempting to find the greater meaning that Dillard has so expertly woven in between her Praying Mantises and Blood Flukes, I would have appreciated being granted more pauses and breaks between words. Such is the tragedy of an audio book. The volume of the CD was a little low, often I found myself forgetting to turn the volume back down, leading to unpleasantries when attempting to change my car audio input back to the radio. I suppose I also have been spoiled by mp3 CD's, which hold a greater number of tracks than regular CD's; I found myself a little irritated by the frequency at which I was changing disks. My sincerest apologies to that guy that I almost hit with my car as I tried to move from disk 5 to disk 6. I would definitely re-buy this if it were offered on in mp3 CD format.

For nature lovers and poets, this is the best. Keep re-reading it after years. It can get slow towards the end and sometimes it feels like she just picked words from a thesaurus, but worth savoring it.

The reading of "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" should be a rite of passage for all young adults who may, as I do, read it again and again to enjoy and to fortify the soul. I am now reading it again so that I may enjoy it and discuss its facets with a high school friend to whom I recently gifted her first copy.

A wonderful book full of information about what the author observes on Tinker Creek, the inter-species relationships there, and stories she learned along her personal life's journey. Stalking and observing muskrats sounded fun, but I wouldn't have sat down and had a chat with a copperhead, even if I did learn that a mosquito could bite it. Some of her sentences are structured in such a way that they paint word pictures and you can almost see Tinker Creek with its fish, mammals, birds, and other creatures. You have to take your time with this book otherwise you might miss something.

For those who like to contemplate nature, creation, God's role in our lives, our role in Him & nature.
I loved the development of her opinion which became a knowledge, wrestled with, about creation.

Annie Dillard's first (and best) book, this was a Pulitzer-Prize winner for a reason. She burst upon the scene with this fantastic, close-look reflection on nature and life, and I would strongly recommend it.

Pilgrim At Tinker Creek & Holy The Firm, by the same author, should be the first books in anyone's library. Dillard shares her insight into life with her readers and one cannot remain unchanged by her words!

Annie Dillard's writing is inspiring and thought-provoking. Sometimes she gets a little too abstract for my tastes but her writing is elegant and she offers great insights into the natural world around us.

This book is downloaded to my Kindle, and although I have not finished it yet, I can recommend it to anyone who likes to read about nature and almost feel that you are there. I have not found a story line yet, mostly a journal of what Annie Dillard sees, experiences and feels as she takes her treks into nature. I am enjoying my trips.

This book details the environment of tinker creek. It is a model to write something in the same way. I use this style to write a prose about strawberry field. It is a good way to develop one's imagination.

It was way to scenic and wordy repetitively that I couldn't get past the first chapter. A friend of mine felt the same way. Hard to read.....I felt as if I was trying to 'read' a very busy painting over and over. Disappointed.

Having grown up across the Roanoke Valley, reading and re-reading this book really is like going home for me. A comfortable friend that reminds me of the importance of paying attention to the natural world. An essential read for those who wish to know and protect the environment.
