My 12 daughter and read this book together, we both loved it. Rebecca Stead has really grasped what's important in the life of a 12 year old girl and how she sees her world. It's an engaging book right from the start even though you read it and think what is it about and where is it headed? The end is surprising and suddenly it all makes sense. We found it a refreshing read, I haven't come across anything quite like it before so it is certainly sticks in your mind. There is a real depth to this book and I highly recommend it to children and adults alike.

Wow! the store really impressed me...I am browsing my orders when message popped out that my order is in my mailbox and it's already 9pm. I went to check my mailbox and its really here. I ordered this item for my daughter reading hobby instead of hooking up with her Ipad.

I loved how the author wove time travel, references to A Wrinkle in Time (one of my favorite books), and realistic adolescent characters (each has very believable flaws) into this story. I immediately recommended it to my 12 year old granddaughter

This book is definitely written for the younger teen but that doesn't take away from how good this book. There are a lot of little clues but I didn't realize they were clues until the mystery was solved. Very well written, well fleshed out likable characters.

Why am I crying? Their is something simply profound going on here. I was taken by surprise. I will be 59 in two weeks and will Never take another young adult book for granted. Still can't figure out what happened to me but I think it's good.

Upon hearing Nancy Pearl's exceptionally enthusiastic review of "When You Reach Me" on NPR's Under the Radar for 2009:
[...].
prompted me to order it right away along with "A Wrinkle in Time" and boy am I glad I did! I read just the first few chapters of "A Wrinkle in Time" and out of curiosity, picked up Snead's book planning to merely review the jacket cover, table of contents and perhaps the first few sentences. That was a mistake because I couldn't put it down until I finished. I tell all my reading friends about it with hesitation as I am a 41 year old woman and rarely purchase children's books for myself!

When You Reach Me won just about every award given to middle grade and young adult novels and you could hear the enthusiastic cheering of 6th-8th graders from across the nation. It truly has one of the most original plots in years, yet it is also closely connected to A Wrinkle In Time. Can't tell you how - that would ruin everything, but insightful readers will have it figured out before the nail biting crisis and climax. This novel is in a new genre being called magical realism. It is mostly the story of a young girl trying to adjust to the changes in her social life, but has a crucial fantastical element as well. A perfect choice for reluctant readers - boys love it, too. Reading A Wrinkle In Time will deepen the experience, but is not necessary to enjoy the story.

Toward the end of the book, the book repeats chapters from the beginning of the book, i.e. it goes from page1-136, then repeats pages 25-56, and then starts again at 169. Therefore, it's missing pages 137-168. the store has refunded the purchase even though it was outside of the return/refund window. Thanks, the store!

This book went in a completely different direction than I anticipated, which is kind of awesome. I didn't necessarily understand everything that happened, but that doesn't make it a bad read. It seems a little difficult for children to follow, but sometimes it's good to read a book that isn't super obvious right from the beginning. Scenes and ideas from When You Reach Me have stuck with me & frequently return to my thoughts which, I think, shows how Rebecca Stead creates a lasting impression on her readers. Plus, I'm a big fan of Pyramid!
Although it's not my favorite, but it's still a good book and I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't mind something a little different.

Great read. Very cleverly written. A feel good story that takes you away. Just enough character development. She wrote a beautiful coming of age story, while maintaining some childhood innocence. Refreshing!

This book is an interesting one, because of all of it's confusing points, but it clears up in the end. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves to read. The confusing parts only made the story better, in my opinion.

Terrible title, great book. Not a wasted word, beautifully constructed. Even tho you might class this book as mystery or science fiction, its greatest strength is its relationships - not just between Miranda and the people in her life, but between Miranda and her neighborhood. The evocation of 1979 NYC is wonderful. Reading to my 7 year old Granddaughter I got to describe phone booths, life without cell phones, homelessness, mental disturbance, and the drugstore cowboys of my own youth. That was almost as much fun as reading aloud.
This book is so good that we read 45 pages together before she tired. An older child would surely be enthralled.

I purchased this book to read with my grandson who is 10 years old. It is hard to find interesting books for boys of that age. This is the one to buy. It was an enjoyable read for young and old. I would recommend for any age.

Themes of friendship, growing up, mental illness and time travel are woven nicely together but the writing felt one-dimensional compared to other Newbery winners. I never fell in love with the characters and didn't find the story to be especially captivating. Glad I read it but also looking forward to something a little deeper.

This book is just note-perfect. I could not have been more won over by the storytelling, characters, and plot. It's hard to talk too much about it because so much of the joy is watching the mystery unfold, but there is such a wonderful sense of mastery in the writing that really makes you more than happy to follow whatever twists await. It's an absolute must-read particularly, but not exclusively, for anyone who's a fan of A Wrinkle in Time.

What a wonderful novel! Miranda is a bona fide latch key kid who gets to walk home from school with her best friend Sal in 1978 New York City. One day, Sal is hit by a bigger kid on the way home and after that, he doesn't want to be friends anymore. Miranda is confusued, but the puzzle continues when she begins receiving anonymous notes. With nods to A Wrinkle in Time and the old gameshow, The 20,000 pyramid, Stead provides a cohesive narrative that had me paging back to check on previous chapters and wanting to read it again after I raced to the finish.

We read this for a mother/daughter book club. It was a real page-turner, very entertaining and even suspenseful.
There were some great subjects for discussion. Our girls are in 4th grade. This book included: the catty way girls can be with each other, which was full of misunderstandings; how boys and girls can be friends, but that it's complicated; a little something magical and mysterious; a little racial prejudice; socio-economic issues. All of it in a way that young people can relate to without being shocked but definitely surprised and hopefully a little uncomfortable.
