There are many enjoyable anecdotes in this book, many laugh out loud stories! I highly recommend this book! However, doctors who actually survived their own surgical internships may not want to relive the experience.

Splendid book. I am not a physician, but have worked in health care for years. This book is about trying, failing and becoming, which are struggles everyone In similar situations have experienced. Reminders of Shem's classic "House of God" abounds, but told in a diary format that makes it even closer to real life. Proze is rough and close cropped, but give a feeling of being near the action.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about medical careers, or just interested in a fascinating look at the medical world. Dr. Iaquinta has a truly delightful writing style, he is witty, he is poignant and I have to confess his writing had me reading this book non-stop. Thoroughly enjoyable, I plan on reading it again, as it was so interesting I feel I could enjoy it again.

Read this book! It gives insight into the difficult world of medicine. I have been in Health Care for 40 years and have read many books about the training process for Physicians. Rarely are they written in a way that lay people can relate to. This book is funny, sad, heroic, poignant. Can't say enough about it!

I have a business degree. Science and medicine are definitely not my things. Despite, that I was thoroughly entertained by this book. Dr. Iaquinta provides just enough medical information to inform, but not too much to overwhelm. It was funny and educational and should be on the reading list for anyone that enjoys a a book written by a good storyteller.

This book was excellent. I really enjoyed his dry sense of humor. I am a third year medical student myself, anxiously dreading internship year that will be upon me in a few short years. Reading dr. Iaquintas story about intern year has helped me anticipate what is waiting for me. The medical jargon doesn't ever seem too intense and the outside of medicine personal relationships side story helps move the story along.

A fantastic read. Funny, poignant, descriptive, self-deprecating. I really enjoyed the author's style. While I don't have any particular interest in medicine or medical content (I'm not interested in ER, Grey's Anatomy, I Shouldn't Be Alive, etc.), I found myself fully-engrossed in the happenings as the book follows the protagonist through his adventures. I would imagine people who do have an interest in medical drama would really find the book captivating.

Some reviewers complained about the time spent on his relationship, but I thought it was minimal, and just rounded out his personal experience. In fact the book wouldn't have been as good if he didn't provide a holistic view of his experience. It was a great read.

Funny, poignant, and truthful. A good look at what internship is really like, and the various professional and personal minefields a new doctor had to navigate. Above all, this book is human. We all know someone like Sal, and his humor and innate kindness will take him far.

No massive write-up here, just wanted to give this book 5-stars. I found it to be very well-written with a combination of personal and professional stories as well as insight into the medical world. Kind of House meets Scrubs. Nice flow to the book that makes the reader want to keep turning the pages.

A great experience to read, and something that helps people understand the American healthcare system better. With two siblings who have gone through similar experiences in internships, I can safely say that no exaggerations can be found here, though I wish they could be.

This book is a very funny and very realistic look at the life surgeons lead in training. The cases shared were great and give surgeons more of a human side than we, as patients, can see. Dr. Iaquinta is hilarious and the writing is superb. I would definitely like to see more books by him!

I laughed and laughed, even though nurses are given a somewhat negative slant. As a nurse, and one that spent more than a few years in the operating room....I was amazed at how originally hysterical the book was. I hated to see it end.

To this point, medical students have relied on "The House of God" to prepare them for the trials of internship. This book is an impressive and long overdue update, giving the reader a glimpse into the the year-long hazing ritual that is the life of a surgical intern.

I have read many accounts of medical school/ residency training experiences; this is one of the most slow moving and boring ever. The author seems to be caught up in more of a jokester from an author perspective than a serious student. Very disappointed.

I enjoyed the humor throughout the book. The author offers many interesting points, not just dry medical info but real life insights- drug abuse, etc. The only drawback is knowing that yes doctors do laugh at patients.
