... complex investigation involving several unforgettable characters as Hurricane Katrina obliterates the fabled city of New Orleans. The portrayal of Bertrand is nothing short of amazing. This wretched criminal is a rapist and a loser. Yet you start to feel compassion for him as well as astonishment and hope at how much he changes over a handful of days.
An outstanding mystery novel.

Best book I have read in months. Was reluctant to read yet another book on Katrina victims, but this book is different. All Burke's characters are interesting in this novel. He makes the reader understand the reasons behind the characters actions. Highly recommend it..

The most relevent and believable of any of his work and his work is always both relevent and believable. He captured the devastation of the city and gave it life. And the mystery itself - the plot, the characters, etc. - was perfect. I hope he writes forever.

This book is overwhelming. The devistation of Katrina left New Orleans in a dreadful state and Mr. Burke tells it like it is. With all the details of reality and sorrow. I was so overcome with emotion, it brought tears to my eyes and I felt so helpless and still do. If you did not read this you must, each of his books leave me with such a feeling of gratitude. He is a wonderful author and I thank him for sharing his part of the world with us.

Natural disaster, detective story, parallel plots, etc. - all like a juggler having 10 balls up in the air at once. Twists and turns, the author keeps the suspense going until he resolves it all with finesse at the end. A captivating read!

I love James Lee Burke's writing. This book detailed the criminal element that rose up after the flooding. He told it like it was. "Dave Robicheaux" is a great character- soft heart, but doesn't have much faith in humanity.

From someone like myself who lived through the horrifying aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Burke nails the emotional roller coaster us locals went through as we watched the failure of our government political system and law enforcement agencies.

I lived in New Orleans for >20years pre-Katrina. I had dear friends who bravely served NOLA during/after Katrina: an insurance agent, a young National Guardsman who worked at/around the Superdome during/after the storm, and a nurse who chose to stay at her post for the storm. Each suffered and survived the panic, disorder, fear, etc. described in this book. They also witnessed and experienceed moments of grace when least expected. The mystery holds the book together well. The chilling descriptions of what desperate people can do is true. Well done.

I highly recommend this book by James Lee Burke. He is a wonderful writer and makes me feel like I am there. His descriptions of New Iberia and New Orleans are so realistic. The plotting is excellent and Dave Robicheaux is very real to me. His description of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is exceptional.

This Robicheaux novel, set in post-Katerina New Orleans, vibrates with barely-suppressed rage at the non-caring attitude of Government towards the victims of Katerina and then Rita - and a searing regret at the destruction of a much-loved place. Burke's storyline contains his unique mixture of deeply-thought personal philosophy and dizzy mayhem, but with less human to human physical violence this time round: it's as if the violence to which everyone is subjected first by Nature and then by a neglectful and heartless Washington overtakes anything that individuals could do to one another. Nevertheless, the almost poetic evilness of the character Bledsoe against the backdrop of something approaching Armageddon lends to the story the familiar good-guy bad-guy confrontation which makes Burke such a satisfying read. Highly recommended
