Although I enjoyed Purple Cane Road, many of the books written by James Lee Burke are very much the same. In the beginning, I couldn't get enough of his books and now I feel that I'm almost reading the same books over and over.

Sometimes successful characters go on far too long to be believable. Dave Robcheaux is starting to become this character. He is getting to be an old man. As his age he is far to good in fistfights and in the bedroom to be believable. However, this does not mean that James Lee Burke is not still spinning a pretty darn good story.

Great book. I'm now committed to reading the whole 20 book series. Since reading Purple Cane Road out of order I've completed the first 2 books and am starting the third. Definitely read this series in order. Great writing and good stories!

Burke's knowledge of the south and in particular Louisiana makes the story come alive. The gritty life of those people who never catch an even break because of their own choices adds a layer of Louisiana spice to the story. No really good guys or bad guys just real people warts and all.

This book was fast paced and emotionally moving. Burke was superb as usual. This book tugged at my heart strings. I was glad to know what really happened to his mother. Although I cried several times reading this book, but I loved it!!!!!!!!

In one of the best Robicheaux novels Burke is able to set a magic scene of crime, sorrow, abject characters and shimmering scenes of nature, light and weather in the South. The elements converge og intertwine in away that absorbs you and leaves you after reading with a feeling of grief and thankfulness - and maybe a faith in God that makes you carry on, at least to Burke's next novel.

Another great mixture of fact and fiction about South Louisiana's life and culture. Wonderful descriptions of Louisiana's flora and fauna, cypress swamps, bayous, rainfall and glorious sunsets and sunrises.

Dave Robichaux is a person everyone in and around New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and New Iberia knows. He is as real as our next door neighbors. AA is a natural part of the life in our state.

James Lee Burke is a great storyteller. Good Book!

I am addicted to Dave Robicheaux as a character. There is nothing better than the ambiance of Louisiana. You really feel like you are experiencing the weather and the sights. I can't wait to read the new installment.

I've read virtually everything Burke has written and found him to be one of my most favorite authors. If your a Burke fan, this book won't disappoint you. If you're not -- you've been missing out on a truly great Southern writer -- and this book may well be the one that gets you "hooked."

I read the Kindle edition of "Purple Cane Road" on the beach and found the beginning difficult. I had thoughts about electronically shelving it. However, I continued reading the book and was happy that I did. I found the author's skill at weaving an intriguing, complicated, and interesting story irresistible. A very good vacation read.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is typical Dave Robicheaux, with his side-kick Clete.Since this was one of James Lee Burke's earlier books, I was able to gain more insight into his demons that Dave fights in most all of Burke's books. I would reccommend this book to other James Lee Burke fans.

In spite of his inability to keep his left leaning politics out of his work, Mr Burke is a master at painting verbal images. I often have to put the book down in order enjoy a good laugh. Being a semi-super commuter and an avid fan of reader Will Patton, I find my drive less stressful when I share the commute with this gifted pair on audio.

I loved the entire book. Having read quite a few of james Lee Burke's novels, each are alike yet different. Dave R. and Clete get into one kind of mess or another but usually end up okay at the end.

This is a typical Dave Robicheaux novel with all of his wonderful, colorful characters. Any James Lee Burke fan should not be disappointed. His plot and settings are exciting. His desriptions of Louisiana are so real, you can smell the smells and feel the air. Enjoy!

Dave and Clete really should seek professional help! BUT we all have the same thoughts about injustices and they just go ahead and do what needs to be done. Of course it is a work of fiction, BUT we all wish we could do justice for the "underdog".

Great stories especially if you are from Louisiana! Just discovered James Lee Burke and enjoy Southern fiction. Would say to read other books in series first so you are familiar with all the characters.

James Lee Burke / Robicheaux sets a comfortable, even beautiful setting, and then inserts a story of human nastiness and struggle into it. It's a cop story ... a Robicheaux cop story that appeals and repulses all at the same time.

Good story.
