Creepy does not even begin to describe this book. I have seen the series too but reading this, we learn that some things are a bit different. The writing is excellent, at times thoughtful, at times funny, and extremely gripping. If you like well written scary stuff this is a great book.

Gypsies, Werewolves, Vampires........very similarly portrayed to the Ukrainian/Russian folklore I remember from my childhood. A very satisfyingly weird story and so eloquently told. Plenty of surprises and the story keeps you guessing. I'm very eagerly awaiting a sequel.......I certainly hope there's a sequel (please?). If you like this genre, this story is one of the stand-outs.

I think.the characters are more complex than people want to.give themethem credit for. It's true the plot.is a little lacking but the characters! I DO HATE THE OVER USE OF THE WORD GYPSY but otherwise a good novel that had me relating to both protagonists
The Island of Doctor Moreau :: One Corpse (Aurora Teagarden Book 3) - Three Bedrooms :: Dead Over Heels (Aurora Teagarden Book 5) :: I Spy Spooky Night: A Book of Picture Riddles :: Hemlock

Saw this series on Netflix and really enjoyed the Hitchcock-esque style of the show. When I learned it was a novel, and going on the assumption "the book is always better", I just had to read it. The book is indeed in more detail and explains so much more. Sadly, though, I had a hard time with the writing style. IMO, it didn't "flow" well. Still, if you liked the show or if you enjoy a "darker" tale I would still recommend the read. It's a genius story with well developed characters, flawed heroes and heroines... You won't want to put it down.

I decided to read this after watching The Netflix version. I hadn't known that it was a book first and books I find are always better.

First unless you have a post graduate vocabulary keep a dictionary handy. Great story line a bit confusing at times. It seams as though the author would change tenses often. I'll be the first to admit that my grammar isn't the best , I'd be curious to know if anyone else found this to be a tedious read at times. All in all a good story line with some original twists on Werewolf's and Upir is that a type of Vampire??

Loved this book it was so imaginative. Cant wait to Watch season 2 on Netflix . Hope they keep everything just an Illusion of whats going on and not turn it into a tacky full of special effects! Ut will ruin it.

From the moment the story opens, McGreevy provides mysterious questions in the plot that he addresses piecemeal throughout the book; not giving answers right away, but rather enticing clues throughout. It was exciting to read!

Netflix series was definitely based on the book and for the most part runs parallel except for one surprising discrepancy. As usual the book answered and/or filled in the gaps left behind due to limitations of the produced work.I will look for more of Mr. McGreevy's works.

I got this book on a recommendation from a friend, but I didn't even finish it. I don't really like the writer's style: it's choppy, it isn't really cohesive, it doesn't really fit into any category/style of writing (it's not really mystery, it isn't really horror, it's just not....). It's kind of a soap opera version of someone's nightmare. Throw in that it uses terms (discriptives of classes of people? Are they talking about vampires, werewolves, or what? Is that a gypsy term?) that are not explained, it ends up just being confusing. I ended up not liking ANY of the characters enough to care about them or what would happen to them, which isn't a good thing in a book. Bottom line: I just didn't like it.
