This was an easy summer read. I was interested in finding out the "who done it" and so read it in one day. Some parts were predictable, but there was always a chance that you might be wrong. Would have chosen a different ending but overall I'm glad I bought it.

This book grabbed me quickly. I love a good period piece and also about struggles women faced and how some overcame them or at least tried to. Very satisfying but also infuriating at times. I hope it lets today's women be proud of being able to pursue their dreams, and to help those coming behind to work hard to continue in our quest for respect and pay equality.

Heroine alternates between determination and obsequious behavior...a bit irritating at times. Unrequited love from the gardener never went anywhere. Still, interesting story about women's roles and very limited options in restrictive Victorian england. Would read more from this author.

This was a wonderful story about an author of mystery books and her family that live in the same house as a 17 year old girl and her father lived 150 years ago. The girl from 150 years ago disappears and the author living in today’s date tries to solve her disappearance.
This book was very good and held my interest all the way through. I couldn’t put the book down as I tried to solve the mystery.

This was well written and very intriguing! I just wish the characters had been more well developed- I wanted to know more. They all seemed one sided- Violet and France's so secluded- even though they lived next door to each other. It's worth the read though a bit disappointing

This was a pleasant read, the story flowed nicely from the present and past and decently well developed. While the plot lines came together ok, it felt a little forced at times but the characters are engaging. All in all an easy, casual read with a interesting story.

Story started slowly with the start of a mystery question. As the story evolved, it began to make the reader want more. The last few chapters were gripping. I couldn't put it down. If you like mysteries, this book is for you.

Really enjoy a novel that makes it difficult for me to put down, and this one definitely succeeded! Likes the development of the characters, along with their strengths and weaknesses. Will try other books by this author.

Could not put the story down - a mystery that grips you so that you are even thinking about it when you’re not reading it! Loved Kerry Barrett’s writing, descriptions and character development. Can’t wait to read more from her.

I seldom rate a book five star. Yet, Ms. Barrett creates a storyline that captured my attention from the first chapter through it's conclusion! I read this book in one day. I highly recommend this book! Patricia LaDuke

and carry the reader into unforseen twists and turns.
I disagree with other reviewers that the ending was predictable- (at least until very near the end).
Maybe, not very sophisticated, or deep; but better than the average!

I loved this book. It had all my favorite elements of a good book; location in an old house by the sea, goes between past and present, engaging characters, emotion, mystery, and unexpected twists. I spent the entire day reading it - I couldn't put it down.

I like books with a surprise ending and this definitely had it. Although getting closer to the ending I was starting to think about a different story line. The story was captivating and a bit different from other mysteries I have read.

The lead character was like a Nancy drew character “solving mysteries”. The plot was solid and had nice twists; but the childishness of the lead character- who was not supposed to be child like- drove me batty.
