This book is probably the most difficult for me to review. Throughout the entire story, I wasn't really sure what I was reading (that's not necessarily a bad thing, it kept me guessing). I loved the different narrators, again this lead to the air of mystery. I enjoyed how important Midnight's character development was. Wink was a a great character and Poppy had her own issues. This story is very different, but it is good to move away from what we are comfortable reading!

April Genevieve Tucholke has given us a unique (I think) Young Adult novel narrated by three characters so we get three different points of view regarding the love hate relationships between them. But as a Young Adult novel notice there is sex involved even at the young age of 16 and much of the contest involved in this threesome results from jealousy and manipulation all of which leads to weird things happening between them.

I mostly really loved the story. The idea that heroes and villains and might be interchangeable is an interesting one. Tucholke is a strong writer. She pulls you right in to a world that is so typical that it is unworldly. Everyone and everything is a type. I am not sure why this is a thriller but to me it wasn't at all. This is a beautifully written discussion of who one really may be, deep down.

There are things I do not love. The names give a hint at it. The names are too contrived to be anything other than labels. Each character is exactly what they are named. It's a touch twee.

But my major problem with the story is the ending. We get the twist- the big reveal. It's a pretty good one. And then the architect of the deceit and manipulation that is revealed has no consequence. All is well that ends well. If you stop to consider their actions in an objective way- it's kind of horrifying. That house of cards should have toppled to the ground. Instead, everyone just got a room in the house.

This book is very different than any other book I have read. The writing style was unique but the story failed to hold my interest. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters until the very end but by then, it was too late. This book was a overall a quick read, but I jut got lost in the overall execution of the story.

Wink Poppy Midnight is a special kind of treat.

Each punchy, distinct chapter was engaging and perfect for reading between daily projects. They built upon each other so powerfully, finally leading to a very surprising and delicious end.

Tucholke’s prose is fresh and poetic, with a unique cadence that created a blissful, bewitched feeling. Wink Poppy Midnight is full, dark, strange, gorgeous, and nothing short of enchanting. I will be backtracking to read all of Tucholke’s work and hanging for more!

Excellent, excellent, excellent. MUST read.

I received a copy of this ebook through firsttoread.com in exchange for an honest review.

This book wasn't really what I expected. While the story moved forward in short sections by switching narrators not a whole lot happens until a third of the way into the book. And once things start happening...well, they're kind of weird.

While the story was initially intriguing I feel like I just didn't "get" the last third of the book. While I don't normally need things spelled out specifically I found the unreliable narrator angle combined with everything else confusing instead of unexpected and entertaining.

I felt like I was left with more questions than answers. The book brings up some interesting points but I guess either it went over my head or I was expecting a different kind of depth.

I liked this book. When I first started reading it, it was a bit hard for me to get into it only because I'm not a big reader but as the story progressed, there were a lot of twists and they were surprising twists as well. It was worth the read, and it was also a quick read but packed with a lot of turns of events.
