The True Story of a Hockey Rock Star - My Last Fight

This book really provides little to zero insight into what one would consider a pretty interesting life. Very little detail and just an annoying read for a fan craving behind the scenes info. I gave it 2 stars just because I feel sorry for McCarty.

I've just recently grown an appreciation for hockey and McCarty is my brother's favorite player so I decided to read this book. I, admittedly don't know a lot about hockey but I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! It's a pretty fast easy read and at parts it's positively gut splittingly funny. As this is written mostly as an autobiography I would have liked to hear more about his family life and him as a father. I believe he mentions his children about three times in the book. He speaks nothing of leaving the city where they lived (atleast I'm assuming his children and ex-wife stayed in Michigan) when he played with the Calgary Flames. I wonder what kind of relationships he has with his children. He also speaks very little about his divorce from his first wife. I feel like those things usually are part of an autobiography. However it may be that he is trying to protect the privacy of his children and that i can respect except he makes no mention of that being the reason he doesn't include them in much of this book. Over all though I really really enjoyed this book and I will probably read it again!! I would definitely recommend it!! It's a wonderful look inside the NHL.

I was just recently introduced to hockey. My husband has loved it since age 5. I love it!!!we always wonder what goes on in the locker room and behind the scenes. This book introduced me to the man ,Darren McCarty,the hockey player,team player,and much more! Thank u so much for your honesty. I can't thank you enough for writing this book. I have great respect for you!! I couldn't put it down. I hope all players and fans alike will read this book!

Thank you very much for the book, Darren. Detroit was the NHL team I cheered for when the Russian Five were playing (I am also Russian). And I remember you playing on that team. We are peers with respect to our age, and I have also been fighting with some medical problems lately and I must tell you that having a positive attitude is extremely important in overcoming a disease. You are a goodhearted and very strong guy, I have no doubts you will win this fight. All the best.

If you're looking for a mature, insightful autobiography of someone's life, look somewhere else. I didn't know if I was reading a sloppy paper from a high school freshman or a biography from an adult. The stories bounced around too much and almost made no relevant connection to each other. The flow was very choppy and inconsistent, and I often felt like I was reading a Twitter timeline. He brags about hanging out with random celebrities... cool story, bro? Also talked about how much he loves his wife then goes on to talk about promiscuity on the next page. I was sorely disappointed in this "book" and tried to gift it to my brother who quietly slipped it back on to my desk. Save your money and stay away.

PS: I have been a fan of the Red Wings and Darren McCarty since 1995.
