This book goes on long past the time anyone cares. Descriptions of a scene or event last for pages, yet we have no descriptions of characters from beginning to end. Interestingly, it uses magical realism to contrive many aspects of the novel. I am a fan of magical realism. Vows and predictions made at the beginning of the novel are long forgotten when they come to bear near the end. I'm not even sure these predictions were ever made, and I'm a close reader. The book is not literature. No literary devises like metaphor or personification; in fact, there is not even a denouement--the story just falls off the page.

Very good book. The beginning is more engaging than the middle - maybe that is where the title came from as it took me forever to get thru that part. Overall I did enjoy the concept and history of New York.

This is a great piece of historical fiction - especially if you're interested in the history and evolution of New York City. On top of that the story line is great. Totally worth the read - you'll be recommending this book.

Very intriguing book. starts with Druid doings in Ireland and transfers to New York. Follow the main character through many experiences on the island of Manhattan. I read it before, and bought a copy to give to a friend. Would recommend it , and have.

I loved this book. it begins in Ireland before Catholicism and religious fighting in Ireland, when there was just Paganism. It progresses with a fantasy ,yet real feel to present day.The religious fighting begins and the novel catches fire at this point. From a boys perspective as he grows into manhood and stops aging. I shall say No more!
I flew through it!

Started slow but soon caught fire. Not finished, but this tale offers a great historical perspective on the development of Manhattan Island from the unique point of view of a man who has lived there since arriving from Ireland in 1740. Hamill's research and tale are delightfully blended together. If you love NYC then you must read this book.

Great book....Well written, incredible story. I love Pete Hamill's writing and this was one of his best. I like the way he blends fantasy and reality. I always learn from his books and enjoy reading about New York City in the early years.

Finally.......it took me forever to read. It started strong, got murky in the middle, but finished great, couldn't put it down. Pete Hamill is a great descriptive journalist and lover of New York, and mystical love. Also read Snow in August. This will haunt my Dreams for awhile

The story originates in Ireland & then moves to New York. The characters are interesting, the story line fascinating, & the historical span of early New York is informative. A really good book.

Very original. I also love history. Fact and fiction well blended. Good descriptions of New York over the many years of his life. Loved him and what a good person he was. Believed in equality for everyone.

I spend 4 days reading forever and was entertained for the most part. BUT. This story deserved a better ending. Hamill just chickened out. I can understand the change in the vow taken regarding Warren's heirs, but not the final vow.

This is the second time reading this book. At first, the book description did not grab me, but something made me buy the book. I cried when I finished it and lent it to a friend. I have told so many about this book so I decided I had to read it again.
