A wonderful view of a place called the Limberlost and the beings one might find there. A means of learning about the birds and other creatures of the area. Suspensefull and wholesome. An adventure that I will read many more times, if time allows.

This book will encourage a love for nature, but greater still, a desire for a pure heart and sound character. Too many of today's books enthrone passion and desire, leaving character, selflessness, and purity behind. File this book with self help and character building books for the young and old

Gene (Eugenia) Stratton Porter was from the Black Swamp area of northeastern Indiana. This was her second book, I believe. It was very popular in the early 1900s. If you like nature and are from northern Indiana, southern Michigan, or northeastern Ohio, you'll especially like this book.

It was interesting to have an insight into earlier times and values. This novel is fiction, but it has to be realistic on many aspects to have any meaning and be of interest to people. I found the reading pleasant, yet as it seems with many novels, after a slower pace in the beginning, the pace accelerate somewhat surprisingly as the conclusion unfolds.

I accidently found this book while searching for something to read. I have been ill for the past two years and reading is about my only pastime.
this book was read to our six grade class years ago, when the weather was to bad to go outside. Our teacher who taught both the 5th and sixth grade in one room deep in the country of northwest Alabama brought us joy then and as it has now some 60 years later.
For we in that school, especial me could relate to this book and the young ladies problems.
Thank you for making it available.

This was one of my grandmother's favorite books, and it's become one of mine too. I plan to have my high schoolers read it this year, as well. It's a beautiful story, and has incidental natural history information about butterflies and moths, too.

When growing up, my mother and I would discuss books, and this is the one she always said was her favorite. There never seemed enough time to read it then, but thanks to Kindle and the store, I finally did. So, it's maybe not my favorite, but it really is good. Nice old-fashioned morals and values and a happy ending. Who could ask for more?

Great classic.... from the 1930's
My mother had this book (I'm 60) and I read it as a teen.
It's not about today's culture but a class of books (Horatio Alger) that were popular back then.
I've read if again, and still love it.

I'm from Indiana originally, and I have visited the author's home way back when and sat in the room where she wrote this book. This is why I bought it for my shelf. I had an autographed copy that I gave to a pre-teen from Chicago thinking I wouldn't want it anymore. Here I am buying it for my shelf of favorites.

The Girl of the Limberlost is my favorite of Gene S. Porter`s books. It tells of a young girl`s struggles to survive ... when she doesn`t have much encouragement. Her mother is a piece of work, yet with the help of neighbors and a few towns people, Elnora finds a way to get herself educated ... and go on to fine tune her musical and teaching abilities. Terry

Although the novel (story) is an old one, the theme is powerful. The vivid descriptions drew me into the story. My reading group read and discussed this amazing book and author. If not familiar with Stratton-Porter, one should read about her first before delving into this book.

"The Girl of the Limberlost" was mentioned in another Kindle book I read. I remember hearing the name of the book but never had the occasion to read it. After downloading it to my Kindle I enjoyed slipping back into time when life was so different from our fast paced world. I recommend this book.

Nostalgic and delightful. However, as one reviewer already said, if you didn't read the prior book entitled Freckles, you would have no idea who "The Bird Woman" is or who "Freckles" is, or why things were the way they were in the Limberlost swamp.

First, if you have not read "Freckles" by the same author, you should read it first as this story unfolds in the same place (years later) and contains some of the same characters. While it's not required for the understanding of this book that you read "Freckles" first - I do suggest it.
I absolutely loved this book and it is now one of my all time favorites. It's a sweet story of a very strong young woman who wants to attend college but is met with many obstacles along the way.

This must be a print-on-order volume and something is wrong with the process- I've returned one book but the second one is the same. The text is scattered, there is no internal organization of the book, no title page, etc. The book was recommended to me by someone who loved it. I can't imagine it was formatted this way.

I think this is one of those forgotten classics, because it's good story and decent plot and character development. But at times it dragged and had unnecessary tangents. Overall I like it for its contrition to American literature, but don't think I will ever re-read or call it a classic.

A great story from a captivating author. Gene Stratton Porter has a way of making you fall in love with her characters, and she teaches you about nature as you read. Her stories make me smile. This book kept my attention and made me want to keep turning pages to see how it all ends.

The audio was only so-so. The various voices were done fairly well, but words were stumbled over several times.
