A wonderful story about an orphan with a disability who is given the chance to prove himself. He finds a family, love and gains independence where he can live his own life surrounded by those who have come to love him for who he is.

Freckles is a great book, well written by Gene Stratton Porter. Her descriptions of the Limberlost, the scenery, the people in the book are so well written, you can picture all the little details. All her books just wrap around my heart and I always want to share these special books with family and friends.

I read this book for school with my literature class over the span of 2 weeks. While I thought it went off to a good start, as the chapters wore on I became less and less impressed.
First, I began to realize that Freckles was simply too perfect. Yes, he has an arm lopped off, but his personality and way of going about things is almost to the extent of a Gary-Stu. The way he spends quiet days in the forest he loves, guarding anything precious to him with a fierce passion...while it's a fairly good role model, it's extremely boring to read. The poor lad lacks originality.
The Swamp Angel...to be blunt, I despised every scene she was in. If Freckles is a Gary-Stu, then in the light of her he's a normal guy. Her only flaw is being absolutely perfect.
At the resolution of the book, I nearly screamed. I shan't give anything away, but let's simply say that it's a perfect end to a sickeningly perfect story.
Yeah, yeah...it's a classic romantic story, just not my sort of thing. It's like a really mushy cereal. Some people like that, and that's okay. But in my taste, mushiness is just a substitution for filling.
Alright...I don't know anyone who likes mushy cereal. Maybe that wasn't the best analogy in the world.

The book arrived on time in great condition. Thanks! I love this story of a different time . The main character is a very honest and trustworthy young man who truly appreciates his opportunities and makes the best of them...refreshing!

The hardships of life in olden days, blended with the old fashioned values of moral courage, nobility, and pure love, make this old book a sweet joy. It is a cameo from the past. Descriptions of the abundant flora and fauna of the forest makes one wish to experience it for themselves.

My favorite book all year. Maybe in five years. I guarantee you won't be stopping with Freckles if you've never read any of Gene Stratton-Porters books. She is a master story teller. Freckles will find his way into your heart and you'll be forever changed

My Mother introduced to this classic some 55 years ago. One that she had loved as a child. Re reading both this and The Girl of the Limberlost was both delightful, informative and nostalgic. My children missed the pleasure, but maybe my grandchildren will enjoy... esp as they live in Chicago

I don't remember reading this book as a youngster but I started reading Girl of the Limberlost but stopped when Freckles was mentioned. I thought I should read Freckles first. I enjoyed the book very much. I will be reading it to my grandchildren.

Freckles has an old fashion charm with old-fashioned values, courage, and valor that are almost nonexistent in this modern world. It's refreshing to read a clean story where two people fall in love for the right reasons and not just for sex.

Great story and very good writing. I have a friend that told me about it, so I was not sure when I started the book, but it is a very well written story, with lots of surprises and a wonderful, happy ending.

If you like a quick paced little book with interesting characters, a bit of mystery, little turns here and there, you will probably enjoy this one. It gives the reader a nostalgic view of the past, very unlike our world today.

Written almost a century ago, the characters are as vivid and vibrant as can be. Few writers today can approach the charm and heart of this marvelous book. Give it 5 pages and you'll be hooked to the end.
