Hunter S. Thompson's first novel is drier than the kind of material he would later become famous for, but it is still a fun read and a view into the world of Hunter's life in his early career. Lots of rum soaked debauchery and mad rants about life in 1950's Puerto Rico are found in this book and plenty of interesting characters are introduced.

The contrast in this book between the understated dialogue, presumably limited by either censorship or the manners of the 50s, and the callous disregard for either Puerto Ricans or white women, is most striking. Apart from that, rum and beer is drunk on every page and the stamina of the characters is hard to believe.

This was an outstanding book. Hunter Thompson's relentless wit is engaging and genius. It is an extremely quick read and once you pick it up it is hard to put down. Hunter Thompson's gonzo style is here but with a low dose and it is just as good as any of the fear and loathing books.

This tale is well written, however you have to know the the Authors style in order to enjoy it. This is a man's, man type of story that gives an honest look at a man point of view, but perhaps from a different time.

This 1958 novel provides a early glimpse into the humor and style of Hunter Thompson. His cutting wit surfaces many times throughout the book. Although not as humorous or biting as his classic Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas, it is a worthwhile read for any Hunter Thompson fan. Very enjoyable reading.

This book was not good. The main character was uninspiring, lazy and boring, It was all I could do to see it through to the end. Basically, this book was a waste of my time. I'm definitely not a better person after reading this book! Sorry!
