After living through the sixties, and throughout the years sampling some of the favors mentioned in this book, I thought now was a good time for re-reading this seminal novel of the LSD/Sixties experience. Tom Wolfe produced a masterful description of the bus, the Pranksters, Kesey, the Hells Angels, the Acid Tests, law and order, and many of the other themes that changed our cultural landscape significantly -- and permanently.

This is a great book. I had forgotten how great it is. Of course, I have forgotten a lot of things since the sixties, but who's counting?

Don't ever forget: We must transcend the bulls***. This book is a primer on how to do just that.

This is early Tow Wolfe. This adventure ( because it could only be called that ) takes place on a bus named "Further". It is the story of the advancement of the " LSD experience " past the controlled settings of the laboratory and peaceful realm of the " Acid Trip " with Guides like Dr. Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsburg. And into the rollicking ride of Ken Kesey , his band of " Merry Pranksters " and ,none other then, The California Hells Angels, as they burst into the scene of artists, musicians and beatniks of the some what peaceful setting of early '60s San Francisco. The English and American Music scene had a little head start on the rest of the English speaking world in the realm of : Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. This was not to last. Kesey and Leary were determined to move a whole generation into a new world of; " Turn on, Tune in, Drop out " and You were either " On or Off the bus " in both the Physical and Meta-Physical sense of the phrase. So read with pleasure and see if you could have passed " The Acid Test ".

This is an interesting read. You need to understand the times and frame of mind of the people in this book or it would be a difficult read. In some ways genius and other way insane. The real meaning for me was to be true to yourself. Your either on the bus or your off the bus!

Needed for a school assignment. Chronicles the Merry Pranksters and the use of psychedelic and mind altering drugs. Non-fiction and often difficult to follow as the narrative jumps around at times. Hard lessons learned through the word -but I do not recommend it being read by teenagers unless they have the opportunity to discuss openly the content.

Everyone should read this book and try to understand the message that Ken Kesey is sharing. There's also a lot of other reading material mentioned in this novel if you're really interested in this whole movement.

A mind blowing adventure that on many levels take you straight to the events that came to color an era, written in a form true to the spirit Of the idea. I really enjoyed reading this book and it's obvious that the events that are described in vivid terms made ripples that we can see even to this day. Many subcultures have their roots in the acid revolution and Tom Wolfe paints the story like no one else. As someone else said, this might be the only good book about the 60s that was written in the 60s. It doesn't have any air of nostalgia to it but makes you feel like it all really was happening just days ago.
Can't recommend enough if you wanna learn more about counter culture, be it today or in the 60s!

An interesting review of the era of drugs and rock and roll that characterized the 1960s. However Tom Wolfe's writing style is not for me. Run on sentences that go on for half a page and restate the same point more than once. Ken Kesey's life and the antics of his followers is interesting but could have been told with 50% of the words used by Wolfe.
