I am surprised that this far into the series that it still reads fresh. Cork's kids are all grown up. He's a proud grandfather. He has moved on from the death of his wife (she didn't deserve him, so I am glad she's dead). And his PI business is doing just fine. So, when death comes knocking once again he is prepared to answer for the victim once again. I don't want to drop any spoilers so I will just say that two mysteries are put out there to be solved, and Krueger drops some interesting tidbits along the way leading to the the murderer. It's a quick read, but an interesting one.

FYI you don't have to be a reader of the series to get this book, the author explains the background behind the relationships so that no one gets lost along the way.

I read Krueger's Ordinary Grace and loved it. So, I decided to try his series with Cork O'Connor. I read the first one, then saw this as a special and read it on my Kindle. Well, I did skip a few books, and years in the story but still enjoyed the book!

Enjoy the whole series but best to start with book one as there is a fair amount of carry forward of story line items. Like the Native American cultural aspect that has a significant impact on the story.

When I finished ordinary grace I said that was is best book. Now, after Tamarack County, this is his best. I have said the same of all of his previous books, they just keep getting better. Thanks Kent and keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next book.

William Kent Krueger really knows how to "tell a story" - wonderful characters that are thoughtfully well-drawn, and consistent throughout the series. Lots of suspense and mystery, and well written besides. Can't wait for the next one!

Characters are becoming too shallow. If serial is to continue, need development. Example is Annie. Weak plot about nun choice and Skype. Steve phenomenon is poor blend of Cork and Henry. My last book. Moving on disappointed.

Awesome book. I have read all of William Kent Krueger's "Cork O'Connor" novels and he has never disappointed me. He is truly one of my favorite if not my favorite author!!! Absolutely loved it and anyone who has read any of Krueger's other novels will NOT be disappointed. Be prepared to read in just about one sitting!!!! The story line is great and continues with the O'Connor family adjusting to new situations and experiencing the perils of living in northern Minnesota. Since I live in Minnesota, it is always cool to recognize the places and events Kruger writes about in his "Cork O'Connor" novels! GET THIS BOOK!!!

This is another in the very appealing series of Cork O'Conner series. The man becomes more human and appealing with each novel. The family has become the heart of these stories and is what draws me into them so deeply. My only disappointment is the wait I have to endure until the next tale is told. But, even that helps me learn the patience and calm that the novels share. Bravo!

Mr. Krueger just continues to refine his craft and his characters. Truly excellent sense of place and cultures, depicting Northern Minnesota and life there with a vividness as true as Tony Hillerman did for the American Southwest.

Brrrr. Once more an exquisite tension in the cold! Loved this latest Cork piece and read it because I've been hooked for sometime. As a Minnesotan myself, I'd love to read the
next installment set in one of the other three seasons .... I already live cold ... holding my breath for the next one .... Thanks!

I'm in much disagreement with 60+ reviewers herein. I found this Krueger to be overlong, too talky, and much weighted down with familial subplots that would have caused Dickens and Hardy to grimace at their depth of dreary difficulties. The basic "mystery" - which the book ignores for far too much of its length - seems interesting but turns out to be a bit too much "Oh Really?" . Certainly not dull, and Krueger is a master at evoking the effects of truly cold weather, and he has much love for the area and its Native American inhabitants. But this is nowhere near his best work. rhb

Like meeting a good friend for coffee, I love Kurger's stories. He always had a good hook and it is hard to dole out the chapters so the visit lasts a little longer. It is fun to read his books again and again, catching the detail in its fullness. Looking forward to meeting again next year. Take care of yourself, Henry!
