I traditionally like the "For Dummies" books but I was not overly impressed with this one. It was entirely basic concepts that gave confusing guidance to an 8th grade student. We bought it as a review tool for our 8th grader, but the review it provided was mostly for things that would be learned in 5th to 7th grade.

Easy to read and comprehend basic math terminology. Fun way to refresh your basic math skills. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to overcome their fear of math. I needed it for just those reasons. I will purchase the companion book at some point, but for what I needed it for, the other book wasn't necessary at this time. I have always dreaded having to do math even in it's most basic form. This book makes me feel more like a smarty instead of a dummy when it comes to math problems. The price isn't prohibitive either.

This is a great book. The instruction is simple and clear, thankfully staying away from some of the more convoluted methods of teaching out there now. The instruction, while clear, is relatively bare-bones and there are not a huge number of practice problems so I would recommend this book as a review for any child, or as a main curriculum for a child who is good at math. A child who "gets" math easily will be (or at least should be!) eternally grateful for the straightforward, brief instruction style and adequate practice problems. (Try Saxon Math for a main curriculum for a child who needs a lot of repetition.) I am using this book as a summer review for my child. Although the book is fine in its own right, what really makes this book shine from my perspective is the online help. As a former homeschooling mom, and now as a working mom who needs an easy way to monitor my child's progress and keep him on task,, I really appreciate the online resources, including more online practice, quizzes, tests, time/grade tracking, option of giving hints/not giving hints, etc. I had expected only a few additional practice sheets but I was really blown away by the online offerings. I have attached a few screen shots. The online resources provided make this book a steal at less than $15.

I read through the Dummies guide that teaches you about basis math and pre-algebra so I was really excited about this book but I was seriously disappointed. In each section the book goes over the basics of how to solve problems and gives you great tips and examples but then they don’t solve the problems with how they tell you to do it. For example it says for dividing fractions to flip the second fraction and then cancel the common factors. I did a few equations and checked my answers only to find out they were “wrong” because I did what they said. The work they showed to come up with their answers showed they just flipped the second fraction, multiplied across, and then they reduced.

Basic Math and Pre-Algebra Workbook For Dummies was not quite what I expected when I bought it. It has very brief explanations and too few practice problems for many of the topics it goes over. In my opinion, even for a refresher, I thought it could use a little more. If I could go back I would have preferred to buy a different workbook, please let me know if any of you have any suggestions.

Using this book helped my grandson understand the concepts and excel in his math classes at middle school. I loaned it to one of the Senior Citizens who wanted to prepare for testing to return to college.

This book was great for jogging my memory. Haven't used anything but a calculator in over 20 years so trying to remember things like long division had been difficult until now. Glad I purchased this book.

was very helpful for my husband, who's 1st language is not English. I also found them very helpful in reminding me how to do math problems. Now I can help my 5th grade grandchild with her homework. Very fun books!

Excellent book to learn the basics of math and algebra, to either review and polish up on what you already know or start from scratch. Also, it's easy enough to skip sections you don't need and go directly to those you need to work on, since they are separated well. I found it interesting enough though to actually review the very basic math sections; it's written well enough to not be boring.

The book provided clear explanations of important math concepts and processes AND gave practice problems with an answer key so students could check their own progress. It is a good, self-contained self-help book.

Perfect for this math dummy. Using as a refresher for employer testing since have been out of workforce for many years and do not use roots and geometry in everyday life. Can jump into any chapter, not necessary to start from beginning.
