I've been considering living abroad for quite some time now.

This book has absolutely given me the tools, resources and know how to make it happen.

I've already began planning a several month long trip to check out 6 of the recommended countries and over 10 of the recommended cities.

Can't wait.

Thanks,
Ryan

The main focus of the book is moving from America and Canada to Mexico, Central, or South America. There is some information on Europe, but the main focus is South of the U.S. There was a lot of very good information and questions that you should consider prior to making a move.

After reading this book I'm planning trips to some countries I hadn't considered before. The one thing they don't mention is home exchanging. I plan to investigate some target countries via home exchanges. Since the premise of their book is saving, I'm surprised they don't mention that as a cost effective way of making extended visits to a target country for investigation.

I still need to investigate some of the web links provided, but overall a great resource if you've ever considered moving overseas.

Having lived abroad in Trinidad, the authors covered all topics that we had encountered. Too bad we did not have this book before that adventure. It would have perhaps saved us a few bumps and missteps.LOL

Although I have lived in many countries as a wife of an Airforce officer I have never learned as much as I learned from this book. Great practical advice for any move to an overseas location. Wished I had read it earlier. A must read for retirees looking to make a fixed income go farther and wanting to live a more active healthier lifestyle.

Real easy read, informative but repetitive. Sections on Europe weak and general knowledge. South America well covered but could you more non American perspective. Although it does mention Canadians the information is not as relevant

When considering an extended move or a lengthy stay overseas, it is always a good idea to get at least an overview of various places you might like to go. This book does just that. And, from what you learn here, you can then do further research to firm up where you would like to go. But, start here...

It was an easy read, well written from first-hand experience. However I kept thinking "tell me something I don't know", because after subscribing to IL magazine for a year now, I felt that I had read much of this book. I am still looking for someone to be realistic about the issues in the countries, or the downside to moving abroad. I have traveled to other countries and realize it will not be the same as here in the US., but what are the real issues? If you want fluff, this book will give you that, with just a little bit of the issues they faced.

There are better and far cheaper eBooks on the store Kindle.
Too many happy stories, I prefer those "live in Cambodia " type books, etc, which are more nitty gritty and real about successfully moving to specific countries or towns.
As a matter of fact, I suggest checking out the store Kindles' Asia Eleven 11 Great Towns to Live in Southeast Asia for a nice overview of great places to live or even visit in Southeast Asia.
Southeast Asia is where the best places to retire are. We all know how Central America is doing these days, not to even mention Mexico!

I received my book this week. I finished Chapter 8 before I went to bed that first night. I love it. It is so well written and interesting and informative. I’m even reading about the countries that I’m not really interested in ever living or visiting. I can’t wait to get to the end of the book…but I’m not going to do any skipping as I don’t want to miss anything. I can’t imagine anyone not liking/loving this book. Thanks so much for your expertise and sharing. I think the other thing that is so impressive is that you don't try to "SUGAR COAT" any aspects of living or traveling overseas. It's after all not the United States, and you provide information supporting why things can and well be different.in the various countries.

I rely on Suzan Haskins and the people at International Living to deliver well thought out information, in a way that makes sense to me as an expat for 10+ years already, but is also prepared with the new to overseas in mind. I admit I have only browsed through this book so far, but their team is thorough and experienced in the matter of living indefinitely overseas. I bought this book to refresh my memory and to see what new I can learn from IL, as I always find their take on places incredibly interesting and candid. They give great advice! You won't go wrong to buy their products.

A superficial look at several areas around the globe currently viable for Americans looking to retire. Mostly geared toward older Americans looking forward to playing lots of golf and making themselves comfortable with easy access to affordable health care and middle class amenities. A good introductory for the inexperienced, but not detailed enough to be very useful for my purposes.

I found it an interesting introduction to living overseas. However, I felt not enough choices were given specifically in Europe, French countryside, Italy. Not everyone is comfortable with say Asian locations, Latin American locations et al, especially when one reads of all the political upheavals all over our globe. It's not all about cheap living and affordable this or that. I don't wish to be critical; but a more realistic point of view should be part and parcel of the equation. I realize you are not going to make much money by putting it all 'out there' in one booklet, you must get them to keep buying the next 'point of interest'. I get that.

Blithely indifferent to a county's human rights record. Belize, for instance, by law does not allow gays into the country. I would like to know that before I visit Belize...much less decide to live there.

I write for About.com as their MoneyOver55 Expert. As I began looking for additional topics to cover I reached out to International Living. They offered to send me a copy of the Guide to Retiring Overseas on a Budget. I wasn't sure what to expect as retiring overseas had never crossed my mind as an option. After reading this book I think it is something many upcoming retiree should at least explore. It doesn't have to be for the rest of your life - it could just be for a few years. It can be far more affordable than you think - and in many cases far more affordable than retiring early here in the U.S. This was an eye opener for me. This book is great because it covers all the things you need to know (health care, climate, culture, finances, mistakes to avoid, etc.), lays out exactly what you need to do next if you want to continue to explore this lifestyle choice, and best of all - it is engaging and easy to read. This is not a dry, boring, how-to book. You'll find it interesting and it will get you thinking about possibilities you didn't know existed.
