Hard times is what shapes the character of a person. If Dick Gregory hadn't experienced these times, he would not be able to write so movingly. I love this bio. He has lived a lifetime through this book. It's his legacy. Please read this book. It's a lesson on life's challenges and obstacles and how one overcomes. learn from the master of life experiences.

I read this first when it was originally published. So I bought a half-dozen MORE copies to give to my now-young-adult grandchildren as part of their education on the civil rights movement. Should be a text book in high school social studies . . .

Dick Gregory has the ultimate say so when it comes to a Triumph of the Will. This man was born into a world of utter poverty and despair in the greatest country on earth and it payed off for him in terms of his tenacity and courage. This man started on the very bottom, but through the loving guidance of his mother and the ability to see humor in the human condition he became a giant. Kudos to a man who has made America so much better for all of its citizens.

This is actually my 2nd time purchasing this book, so that should already say alot. I let a friend read it and they didnt want to give it back and i couldnt imagine my house without it..This book is amazing. Its pure truth. It makes you laugh it makes you cry. You will be mad..but more than anything it will make you proud and want to know more about this great man. I encourage all to read this book

I'm uncomfortable with the title, but the book is insightful and moving. If you did not grow up black and poor, you need to read this classic by Dick Gregory. I also recommend it as required reading for red necks and for anyone interested in the civil rights movement.

By the time I got settled and really interested, the book was done. Caught me by surprise that it was simply so short. Since I read it on line, I really didn't' pay much attention to the length of the book and again was simply caught off guard when it ended. Thought there was so much more content than there actually was.
