Using and Understanding Mathematics is the worse math book I have ever opened in my entire life. Chapters 5 and 6 are definitely the worse chapters in the book. Chapters 5 and 6 deal with statistical reasoning, having taken a statistic course prior to this course I found that there were a lot of mistakes in the book. The explanation of surveying and opinion polls was extremely poor. The calculation of the confidence interval was not clearly defined neither was the discussion on choosing bias for samples, nor finding the significant point value within a given sample. I also felt the book did a horrible job at explaining the significance of standard deviation and did a poor job of explaining the 68-95-99.7 rule. On a good note I felt chapter 4 was very informal especially about how to calculate credit card debt, mortgage, and determine loan payments with just simple equations.

I rented this book for my summer semester class. It was more than 200$ in my schools bookstore but with rentu, it was barely 30, even with next day shipping. In excellent condition and it comes with a 5 month rent period which was plenty of time for my summer class, will definitely use them again.

Pro:
Beautiful graphs and illustrations
Real world applications
ALOT of end of the chapter problems

Cons
-Poor organization
-should have more examples on logic section
-not enough explanation of covered material. for example based on one small example in the text the problem at the chapter would;d be ten time more. How am suppose to solve the ten end of chapter questions when the chapter had one example that was a paragraph long.

This book was in great condition and was shipped speedily. I ordered the starter kit and the solutions manual with this book however and found out that I do not need either one for my class so that part was a waste of money. Check with your instuctor before ordering all these books. You may not need ALL of them. Thank you!
