Dr. Orloff has made it to the NY Times Bestseller list with her latest title and deservedly so. I do not read much self-help lit anymore. I'm caught in the "been there, done that" mentality. It takes a book with lively prose and a cogent advocacy of constructive principles to grab me. Dr. Orloff succeeds with Emotional Freedom: her multi-modal emphasis on transforming your emotional life has the ring of medical authority and enough spirituality to satisfy my need to tackle problems (and problem people) with tools not solely derived from the clinical areas. If you desire a guide to healing your emotions without the cookie-cutter approach that cheapens a lot of personal growth "systems", I highly recommend this book.

This is a living bible which we should all learn and live by every day if we want to be able to own our moments to give it all to worthwhile feelings and actions, and don't get stuck over trifles. I just wish our children could be thought at schools some of the basic principles of human energy fields, biology and spirituality described here. The principles and practices of calling our intuition and dreams which this book provides are tremendous tools we all could possess to stay on track in our lives especially during demanding turns and complex situations.
What has made this book a superior one in addition to the decades of readings, medical practice and experiences of the author are her born psychic abilities which has added a new dimension to the easy-to-follow messages.
I have been referring to Dale Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living book in the past couple of decades whenever I was going through tough times. Now with this Emotional Freedom bible I have experienced that most of my problems can be prevented using the techniques explained here. In the former, solutions were presented while in the latter core of the problems are dealt with and one is thought to fish instead of being given fishes.
This book is for you if you want to get to know your own self.

I enjoyed Orloff's book immensely, especially the chapter on emotional vampires (Chapter 5). Incorporating many of the techniques in the book helps staying centered and grounded in this tumultuous time we live in. There's great strategies in the book dealing with people who can drain the life out of you, if you're not conscious and present to their manipulative ways. Along with helping one establish healthier boundaries, it also stresses the importance of compassion for others through guided meditation, evoking patience over frustration. This is a book even a non-spiritual person can like, because Orloff's writing balances left-brain intellectual thinking with right-brain intuitive thinking. A balancing act well done and a great read!
Sincerely,

If you are one of those people who has your buttons pushed more than you'd care to....this book is for you. If you thought you'd handled your "stuff" because you've talked about it for years, yet - it's still there.....this book is for you. If you're tired of dealing with it...this book is for you. The tail no longer needs to wag the dog.
Dr. Judith Orloff helps us understand how important it is to deal with all of our emotions. No need to ignore them or label them good or bad - just a need to acknowledge them and use them as tools of incredible transformation. Tools that will awaken our intuitive powers if only we pay attention.
Because she shares her own journey so willingly, you'll realize how common our deepest fears and worries are. And, you'll benefit from the numerous practices throughout the book that will help you listen to yourself, feel what's really going on, and open your heart.
Learn how to make the shift...and, let your transformation begin.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I have read it and listened to it on audio twice. I am an empath and I was not fully aware of what was going on until Judith explained it in her book. I am also an intuitive so this book was doubly wonderful for me. I recommended this book to all of my friends and family. This book highlights different personality types and gives insight to how and why some people tick the way they do. I think it can be helpful for people in general to understand friends, coworkers and family members that they may have had a hard time with. It is much easier to deal with people in general if you can see things from their perspective. It doesn't mean you have to agree, but if you can gain perspective you will have much more success and go much further in life. Let's face it. There are a a lot of hateful, negative and disgruntled people in our society. This book can help you keep the positive flow of energy in your body while fending off Negative Nancy and Critical Cathy. We all have the ability to heal ourselves. This book is a perfect guide for that, and a great gift for a friend or someone else that you love!!!!!

I bought this book a few years ago as a measure of self-help. The tips and tools on how to gain or regain your sense of self, how to deal with emotional vampires, and other stressors are just invaluable. I refer back to it from time to time, and have bought it for a few friends who needed insight and encouragement. I highly recommend it.

Dr. Judith Orloff's book is delightfully written, fun, profound, and profoundly helpful. Few books are so diverse in their approach -- by turns sharing personal stories, providing practical step-by-steps, while being scientific, quizzical, spiritual, sensitive, penetrating, informative -- speaking the soul as well as the mind and body. I and many of my friends have found it invigorating, aiding revelations about the swirl of ourselves and the outside world.
I love the "Emotional Action Steps" that are scattered throughout the book, actions like "5 Cures for Loneliness" and "Spiritual Strategies to Lift Anxiety and Worry". Identifying "Emotional Types" ("The Intellectual", "The Empath", "The Rock", "The Gusher", etc) has become very useful to me since reading this book. It gives me a strategy to attract what's positive and not get blindsided by negative people or situations. I really think it can greatly help one achieve balance and build wonderful connections in life. Highly recommended!

I found Dr. Orloff's book Emotional Freedom and enjoyed the reading so much. I then bought the Audio Book and watched all the video's on YouTube. How refreshing and inspiring to see a board-certified psychiatrist, who also is a teacher at UCLA, combine her passion for psychiatry, spiritual health and intuition to give us Emotional Freedom - a tool for us all to transform our emotions and react constructively to challenging situations. In one section, Dr. Orloff explores loneliness, which has become epidemic in our country. She provides wise advice, practical suggestions and even some surprising strategies for connecting with Spirit to transcend feelings of isolation. Whether you're wrestling with issues of frustration and fear, or simply want to start seeing your emotions as a path to personal transformation, I highly recommend Emotional Freedom. It offers a chance to "grow stronger, smarter, more light-bearing." As Judith says, "The time for miracles is now."

Judith,
Thanks for Emotional Freedom!! From my perspective your work is risky, absolutely necessary and directly on target: good for individuals, relationships, families and collectives, globally, today and for generations to follow. Awareness and presence for the self as person and others; shining light on the delusion of a permanent self; acceptance of innate human selfish desire and persistent will to be, to improve, to accumulate, to exist, to become, to grow more and more; and neutralizing negative emotions is a giant step forward for all of us. Simply, just sit and help others.
Again, thank you for your work: the unifying theme...the four major components of emotions (biology, spirituality, energetic power and psychology) is quite insightful and a marvelous sharing.

Very good and thorough. I learned a lot from this book, specifically about how to detect people that drain your emotions and energy, how to deal with them and how you can avoid becoming one of them. It also helps with frustration and provides step-by-step actions and analogies in dealing with different emotional situations.

Dr. Orloff's book, Emotional Freedom, is a must read for these unprecedented times...times when many of us are feeling the effects of the upheaval of the old paradigms and we are also realizing that opportunities are emerging for an evolved new way of being.
The promise of this newest book from Dr. Orloff is that it is designed to be a road map to a deeper understanding of yourself and your emotions in order to experience a joyously fulfilled life...and it delivers. In many ways, the book is a primer for transformation. Her book is at once informative, deeply wise, engagingly readable and filled with practical inspired action steps to achieve relief and upliftment from life draining emotions such as stress, overwhelm, and frustration. The strategies work. Most impressive is Dr Orloff's compassion for this often tender journey to liberation from limiting emotional patterns. Hers is a comforting message and a healing one.
Dr Orloff comes from the heart and, in this book, she gives you everything you need to navigate your emotional territory in order to claim the authentic power of your own heart's wisdom as a guide to live with grace. To read this book will be to give yourself the gift of inner peace. It doesn't get better than that.

This book, 'Emotional Freedom', should be on every night stand in America. I am a clinical Hypnotherapist in Ventura county and I tell all of my clients about Dr. Judith's book. So much so that the Ventura 'Barnes and Noble' bookstore ran out of stock and had to reorder more books! It's that good!
One of the things I like best about 'Emotional Freedom' is the clear, easy style it is written, enabling you to understand her points, easily. Dr. Judith walks you through each emotional 'type' as well as describing in detail the types you should avoid. And, if you can't avoid them, she gives advice on how to live with them. This book is a classic and should be required reading.
I was fortunate to have Dr. Judith on my radio show and was impressed with her solid way of thinking. I can't help but wonder what the shift in the way we treat each other would be if everyone read and lived by the information contained in Emotional Freedom. GET THE BOOK - give it to everyone one you love.

Emotional Freedom is an excellent book. It is filled with good advice to help you live a better life in this challenging world. It teaches us to be positive and less critical of ourselves and others. After reading Emotional Freedom, I plan on reading the remainder of Dr. Orloff's books.

Emotional Freedom is the most wonderful book that I have ever read. It's a book about the transforming power of love and the emotional freedom that comes from truly loving. It's about learning to love more fully by "cultivating positive emotions and being able to compassionately witness and transform negative ones, whether they're yours or another's." Dr. Orloff identifies seven emotional transformations that occur when learning to love meaningfully. They are (1) turning fear into courage, (2) turning frustration and disappointment into patience, (3) turning loneliness into connection, (4) turning anxiety and worry into inner calm, (5) turning depression into hope, (6) turning jealousy and envy into self-esteem, and (7) turning anger into compassion. Each of these transformations is examined from the perspective of four major components of emotions: the biology of the body, the energetic power of feelings, the psychology of inherited emotional patterns, and the spirituality of love in emotional growth.
Dr. Orloff is eminently qualified to perform these four-part examinations because she is a psychiatrist in private practice as well as a professor of psychiatry at UCLA. She is also a person born with strong intuitive powers and has added this dimension to traditional psychiatric understanding thus enabling her to bring a more comprehensive approach to emotional healing, health, and freedom. Beyond this, she is a very spiritual person and has made spirituality a vital part of emotional freedom. Her focus on spirituality allows her to point to God and Spirit as real but not of a nature defined by religiosity.
Dr. Orloff offers many practical techniques for gaining emotional freedom and illustrates her ideas with client case histories as well as insights into the events that led to transformation in her own life. She also provides numerous self-tests that help the reader to become consciously aware of his/her own emotional profile and of the changes needed in order to become emotionally mature and free.
In summary, this book is powerful and contains a message that can change not only individuals but also the world in which we all live.

I had the pleasure of being with Judith Orloff in November 09 and spent 3 days with her. I attended all her workshops during that time at the Celebrate Your Life Conference in Arizona. This book is filled with help. Negative emotions are inevitable in life, and for so many of us they are difficult, overwhelming, even debilitating. Dr. Orloff has created a detailed road map out of our emotional traps. There's no one-size-fits-all solution in psychiatry, and knowing this, Dr. Orloff wisely gives us lots of stories, exercises, meditations, many different approaches to getting through a problem, all of which are clear and accessible. There are many self-help books available, but Dr. Orloff is the X factor that makes this one especially good. You feel she's on your side from page one. She's pulling for all her patients--those in her office or those who read her books--to get out there and live their lives to the fullest. I can tell I'll use this book for many years.

As a motivational speaker I am constantly on the lookout for little gems of wisdom that I can use to inspire and help my audiences. In this respect I am an "the store book junkie" and devour books with any semblance of a good marketing offer. Occasionally I find some gems. Frequently I dont.
"Emotional Freedom" delivers "little gems in spades" and I was delighted with that aspect of it.
What I hadn't bargained for however, was getting an almost word perfect description of a condition that has challenged me for years. And although Judith doesn't espouse "epiphanies", rather she sensibly advocates the path of baby steps, I had an epiphany. I befriended a monster whose name I didn't know up to now, even though we'd been living together for years.
I can't say the challenge has subsided, but I have him named, and I have a strategy, and best of all, I have hope. Real positive hope.
"Emotional Freedom" is not just a book. It's a philosophy, a process, a body of knowledge, a set of strategies and ultimately, as we say in Ireland, "Guinness for the soul".

In a world where we all have hectic lives with work and personal, this book was a breath of fresh air. In the same way "The Secret" makes you reconsider what's the most important facts of life, and how to achieve goals using an inner self confidence, this wonderfully crafted book examines the same realm of clam. It's one of those books you will not read once. You will want to remind yourself often to get back into that place, whatever that may be for you, to live a more productive happier lifestyle.

What would it be like to experience emotions as a daily part of human existence, rather than being at the effect of them? Imagine a life in which you are able to ride the ebb and flow without being capsized by a tidal wave of feeling. Sound too amazing to be true? "You possess the ability to achieve such emotional freedom; it's closer than you think. No matter how stressed your life is currently, the time for positive change is now", writes Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, Judith Orloff, M.D., in her insightful and transformational book Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life. The author describes the inner strength gained by taking control of one's own life through emotional development to create positive reactions to both good and bad events.
Judith Orloff understands the power of a person's emotions, and how for many people, negative emotions can seize control of their lives. Instead of avoiding the many emotional triggers that a person encounters in life, the author recommends facing these emotions directly through the deep and challenging lessons provided in the book. In the case of each emotion, it can be changed from one state to another. Negative emotions can become positive ones through the action oriented concepts that empower the individual, rather than having the person living in a life controlled by the actions of others and their actions. Instead, Judith Orloff shares how to identify one's own emotional type and turn that characteristic into a source of emotional strength. The result of this personal taking charge is a happier and more fulfilled life.
Judith Orloff, M.D. (photo left) points out that the most important relationship of a person's life is with themselves. The author writes that to establish and nurture this self-relationship, it is essential to gain control of the emotions. In this case, the author provides the tools to turn the current emotional imbalance upside down. In place of each negative emotion that holds a person back, the author guides the individual to replace it with its opposite positive emotion. Through this re-balancing, a person achieves the freedom to move forward with one's life and to strengthen the important relationship with oneself. With the critical self-relationship healed, the person is then much better equipped to respond in a more positive way to the many obstacles and challenging people that are met throughout one's life. In effect, Judith Orloff guides a person through the process of rewiring their entire emotional response system so that each external stimulus triggers a positive and empowering emotional response. The past response, of a negative and self-destructive emotion, is removed through this process, providing freedom from the captivity of the negative emotions.
For me, the power of the book is how Judith Orloff presents the complex concept, of emotional response and personal transformation, in a very engaging and personal way. The ideas are shared in an understandable and logical format, that helps the person to continue through the process without getting lost or bogged down at various points. The author blends the theoretical and psychological aspects of the transformation, with practical and actionable advice for ridding oneself of the negative emotions that sabotage one's happiness.
The book contains a step by step process for achieving personal freedom from the constraints of negative emotions. At the same time, Judith Orloff shares warmth and empathic advice for freeing oneself from the draining emotional experience of the difficult people in one's life. Throughout the book, the action oriented advice is highlighted for ease of reference, and the material is structured for ongoing study of new techniques, and for reflecting upon the transformation made along the journey. The author connects the concept of emotional well-being with physical health and personal happiness. For the author, these principles are entwined, and act harmoniously when all are attuned to one another. Emotional freedom leads directly to better health and a richer and happier life.
I highly recommend the empowering and liberating book Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life by Judith Orloff M.D., to anyone who is struggling with gaining control of their emotions and their own personal happiness and physical wellness. This book offers an action oriented techniques that will result in real and lasting, positive emotional change.

I had an amazing experience post op which your book is responsible for. On page 149 she discusses Fear, and
reprogramming Fear. After the accident we had on March 31, 2009, (the cause of my need for shoulder being repaired),I had large doses of fear attached to my energy field. It was much worse when I was a passenger while driving. Due to the fact I was the passenger when the guy who ran the stop sign T-Boned my side of our vehicle, I was traumatized every time I even thought about getting back in the passenger seat. I'm a Reiki III Master Teacher, I understand the importance of grounding, balance, breathing, meditating and unfortunately all my knowledge was useless, the Fear was bigger than I am...
On page 148 there is a quiz, I answered yes to all of them.....I was totally inhibited by this fear....I now will tell you how this book helped me greatly. Judith gives a quote "I will not give in to fear." This became my mantra. As I was sitting in pre-op and they were sticking needles in my neck to find the nerve to block my entire right arm, I silently chanted " I will not give in to Fear" over and over in my mind. It was my very last thought before the anastesiologist put me under for my surgery.
When I woke up in post-op and the surgery was successful I found that my fear was gone. It was not until I was in the passenger seat again driving to my post-op appointment a few days later, that I told my husband what this felt like to me. I felt as though, the Fear was a living essence holding on so tightly to me that I couldn't let it go. When they put me under, because my mind was completely gone, the fear had nothing to hold onto anymore and simply fell off. My mind visualized a pole (me), with ice stuck around it (the fear), and when they put me under, my pole warmed up (me) and the ice fell off, completely....it had no way of holding on to the pole (me) anymore. I woke up, my pole was clean. I hope you can visualize this with me.
I have traveled by vehicle many times post op, and I'm still clear of the fear....the fear and stress had no way to hang onto me anymore and now when I use your mantra "I will not give in to fear" it is to keep my pole free!!!
Now I know suggesting to others that they find a reason to be put under, to turn off the conscious mind, is silly, maybe, but, this book was a key element in my recovery from terrible post traumatic stress. This book provides tools, insights, encourages intuition, spirituality, and psychology all be used together!
I believe Judith has come up with a book, that belongs in every personal library!!
I will refer to it again & again!
Sincerely,

Dr. Judith Orloff will likely be the catalyst that changes healthcare as we know it. I am speaking both as an RN and a patient. First, as an RN I now feel that I have a tool to offer patients when they are in emotional pain. As a patient dealing with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) her words provided the necessary shift in thinking that I needed in order to get well. As a nurse I have excelled at taking care of others; but, now I not only know that I deserve care myself but that I am the one responsible for providing that care. Dr. Orloff provides concrete tools. I was privileged to attend one of her book signings and awed by her humility. She exudes a passion for her work and an absolute respect for each individual. I immediately ordered multiple copies to send to family and friends as well as each of her other books. I just finished Second Sight, her first book, and am now reading Intuitive Healing. Thank you Dr. Orloff for all you have done and continue to do to alleviate our suffering.Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life

I have purchased dozens and dozens of books over the years that have covered such topics as spirituality, self-help, metaphysical principles, intuitive guidance and psychotherapy-related information. I enjoy learning and applying life-affirming principles. I would not, however, have typically purchased this book as I wasn't familiar with the author and wasn't drawn to the title. But it came highly recommended on email lists for some other authors I respect, including Christianne Northup, Neale Donald Walsh and others. And I'm so glad it did. The book was an enjoyable, easy read and the author is obviously experienced, compassionate and an excellent positive life guide. I found lots of nuggets to apply in my own life, including some amazing tips for using dreams which I applied and received immediate helpful results. Enjoy!

Emotional Freedom is the perfect book for our time. Our environment can get clogged with stuck emotions , and can inhibit creativity and focus. As a life coach I spend alot of time with clients teaching them how to navigate negative environments. This is a perfect tool to help them find balance and inner calm. I especially like the mix of science and spirituality.
It is a wise and accessible guide -giving hope to anyone who has ever felt stressed out and out of balance. This book will help you move from surviving to thriving.

If you want to learn to face these challenging times we live in with less fear and more courage, less despair and more patience, less anger and more love, you must read EMOTIONAL FREEDOM by Dr. Judith Orloff. Many wise men from the Buddha to FDR have told us that a crisis should never be wasted, and Dr. Orloff shows us how to take advantage of this one to help our spirits soar beyond our most vivid dreams. It's a beautiful book written by a beautiful spirit. It couldn't be more timely, and I give it my absolute highest recommendation!

Having read Dr. Orloff's other books, there was no hesitation in purchasing this latest release. She speaks to my soul and my heart in her writing (and speaking). Having discovered that I am an "empath" through her books, there has been ultimate healing for me, more than this written review can convey. She is a great discovery; I am finally able to come up with ways to explain myself to the "others" when I'm told I'm "too sensitive"; in fact, I now look forward to the opportunities, where before, I felt awkward. I can't say that this book is my favorite, because I say that about each of her books. It's the best for me in the moment, until I pick up one of the others, but this one is different in its details and tools. Judith has a way of writing that is tender, sweet, deeply caring, penetratingly brilliant and precise and one just knows that she lives what she teaches. Judith's books have been my greatest source of inspiration to accept myself as me; I only wish I had discovered her decades ago. This book is a must read if you have felt "on the outside" or "deeply in touch with no one to tell"! Judith had me with Hello, and I believe I will continue to follow her work....books and books down the road.

As a counselor most of the clients I work with are adolescents and children; however I read this book and found it so useful that I have started recommending it to the parents of my clients. We all need to experience that emotional freedom Dr. Orloff provides guidance to achieve. Can not recommend highly enough!

I read Emotional Freedom a while back, and got so much concrete information on how to maneuver through life from the wisdom it held.. Especially like the quizzes to help you see exactly where you fall with some issues, then the action steps on how to improve those areas of concern. I recently I got a copy of the book's audio version, containing the same materials.. Was amazing how I picked up different things, and how the reading was reinforced by hearing the information in a different format. This is a wonderful reference book that I'll re-read over and over. Thanks Judith!

This is one of the most empowering books I've ever read!
Dr. Judith Orloff lucidly breaks down how all the negative nuances of our "pressure cooker society" enslave us, and how to break free on our own, without pill-popping, through our inner vitality.
Acting as a midwife to the emergence of our finest, freest selves Orloff gives us a linear understanding of biology and behavior, as well as a very real and possible intuitively sparked transformation in one's soul. She details the Emotional Types ("gushers", "intellectuals", "controllers", "criticizers", "victims", just to name a few), how to achieve balance with these types in life and how to recognize and transcend them within yourself.
I find it pleasant and instructive Orloff's way of telling stories from life itself, the kind of life we're all familiar with (traffic jams, anxious mothers, professional setbacks, financial stress, depression) in order to show how one can deal with these things and lead "a fully embodied life".
Orloff herself strikes a wonderful balance and speaks from a unique position -- the intellect of psychiatry, intuitive practice, and experience -- and she harmonizes all these qualities into this marvellous gift called Emotional Freedom. I don't believe it'll ever leave my side!

Judith Orloff, M.D. has hit a home run with this practicle book dealing with understanding our emotions and our relationship with them. It is very liberating to realize that we have a choice and a proven method anyone can apply to their life with positive results. It teaches us that we are not victims to emotions beyond our control. This book provides practicle steps to gain self control, rather than being overcome by the emotional rollercoaster that can occur in our lives. I will be giving a talk at a New England community college to a psychology class next month. I will be using the material included in this book coupled with my own training as a Holistic Health Counselor - Practitioner. Thank you Judith for such a clear nd helpful book.

I am so excited to be reading Dr. Orloff's book "Emotional Freedom"; I can't even wait until I finish reading it to post this review. All I can say is WOW! I am an avid reader, especially in the genre of self-help, and I have NEVER experienced such an eye-opening, rewarding book.
I am already experiencing the benefits of emotional freedom by incorporating Dr. Orloff's tips for shifting energy from fear to courage, using dreams to unshackle negative emotions, and remaining centered by understanding my emotional style of relating in the world, as well as protecting myself from emotionally draining people.
I particularly love how she peppers her writing with Buddhist philosophy, and uses personal examples from her own life to illustrate her progress toward emotional freedom. Her dedication to helping people combat suffering shines through on every single page.
This is the most useful book I have ever read, and I will be encouraging everyone I know to read it. Dr. Orloff is clearly gifted, both as a Psychiatrist, and as a writer. I am now a lifelong fan and student of her work. I can't wait to read all of her other books as well.

Please understand that I am one of the most difficult people (in many ways) that I, myself have ever encountered. My 2010 was the most difficult year of my life. As a strong willed human being, I was determined to seek my own way to emotional health. I was so depressed that I wouldn't leave my home. I wouldn't go to work. One day, I gathered the energy to go to the gym. My anxiety was so severe this particular day that I burst into tears while on the treadmill. That was the moment where I knew I had to make a change or I would literally hurt myself. I went to the local Organic food store, next to it was a bookstore. I chose to go to the bookstore as my heart was pounding. I went in, looked at many books and found Emotional Freedon. I have never been the same since. After years of Therapy (a necessary choice) and trying to wait for "God" to "fix me," I chose to take my life in my own hands and I read this book. It changed my life. I have since purchased it for all of my friends and I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a way to change their life. Take it from me. I am a new person!

Emotional Freedom by Dr. Judith Orloff, is a great book about how to overcome emotions that are negative. I love Dr Orloff's books, because they deal with the mind, body and spirit. As a therapist and an intuitive healer, I see how negative emotions, destroy clients lives through, depression, anxiety and rage. When I work in the ER, I see how anger can turn into domestic violence, gunshots and assaults. We have to take responsibility for our feelings and not become victims to them. They are OUR emotions. These heavy energies ravage the body physically and emotionally. A prescription, as Dr Orloff gives as to how to transform them is essential to finding peace and happiness. I like the kind of buddhist approach, about getting the lesson, in them but not letting the negativity overcome you. It is NOT emotional elitism, but a method NOT to stay in the darkness. You get the lesson from the anger and then move forward. A brillantly written book from one of the most progressive and pioneering voices in psychiatry today. This should be a requirement for all medical students in psychiatry and other disciplines and a great teaching book for the lay person. Emotional Freedom gets right to it - Dr. Orloff combines her keen intuition, the wisdom of her experience as a psychiatrist and the spirit of the heart in this work. Emotional Freedom is for those that feel controlled by their feelings, at the mercy of their fear or anger, or adrift in an ocean of emotions.
She offers practical tools to reprogram habitual paths of misery and awakens the reader to an awareness of the power within. This shift brings one more joy, better relationships and an important spiritual awareness. Dr. Orloff offers a guide to address the gamut of key emotions that can "take us away" from our deserved state of happiness. Her articulate flowing writing style touches the heart.
I was privileged to hear Dr. Orloff speak to a large group (each received a copy of the book) and have been touched by the number of individuals who have reported that their lives have been powerfully impacted by the book. Thank you Dr. Judith Orloff!

I would highly recommmend this book to everyone. Dr. Orloff's writing style is as if you are sitting together having this great conversation with a dear and trusted friend. The information on the different emotional types really helped me identify the people in my life and their emotional types. This gave me a better understanding as to why they do the things they do as well as the information to better deal with them in the future. I understand now why some people are so draining and so are so full of drama. Armed with this fabulous information I feel better informed as to how to better deal with situations as well as people. Truly one of Dr. Orloff's finest work!

I bought this book last summer and found it very useful. I used it mainly to reduce stress and anxiety but ended up discovering so much more! Dr. Orloff proposes very effective methods to achieve emotional freedom and shares real life experience with us and I felt like I could relate all along. It made the reading even more interesting.
I suggest this book to everyone. I loved it!

This is one of my new favorite books. I'm in the process of reading the book for a second time and must say that I feel a special connection with the author and her experiences in this book. She has a very direct writing style and her honesty is very refreshing. She has successfully placed her knowledge on the subject of emotional freedom in its true context to be used to better the lives of other people going through hard times. I can only hope that her book becomes required reading for all so that people can receive the help and training they need to successfully free themselves from all of the negative emotions around us in this world today.
Judith - you are a sweetheart and amazing lady, and I'm really hoping to see another book from you!!!

This book will expand your life, freeing you of all the emotional baggage we all tend to drag through life. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 were particularly meaning for me as they helped me transform many of my fears and build my self-esteem. Dr. Orloff gives you strategies and exercises to help you each step of the way. I keep this book by my bed to refer to whenever I start to slip into my old patterns. It takes work and determination to shift old negative thoughts but with books like Emotional Freedom it can be done. Have a very blessed day..

Part of my home library looks like the personal growth / mind-body-spirit sections of your local book store, and Judith Orloff's "Emotional Freedom" is a sparkling jewel among many. She doesn't just promise a path to emotional freedom, she gives you the tools to make your life better--wherever you are in your journey. Obviously, reading a book is no substitue for those who need one-on-one cousel, but for those of us who just want to dig a little deeper into ourselves--our personal motivations and the shadows that follow us around when we're not fully awake, this is a go-to work for better understanding.
What I loved most about "Emotional Freedom" is Judith's passion and voice. She presents clear and compelling information as to the psychological, spiritual, physiological and energetic reasons behind some of our core emotions. I am a big fan of down-to-earth writing and Judith's easy writing style grabbed my interest--and held it--from the beginning. If you don't read another book about why we do what we do, you must read "Emotional Freedom;" it is sure to become a work of enduring wisdom.

Judith Orloff is an amazing writer and teacher. I loved "Second Sight" and feel that I really got to know her in that book; with "Emotional Freedom," I got to know myself in ways I wouldn't have anticipated. I've been "on the path" my whole life, and it sometimes takes humility to "become as a little child" and be open to teaching from a peer. What a blessing that that willingness was available as I read "Emotional Freedom." I came to understand my "emotional type," accept myself more, and learn some fresh and unique tools for making it through this fascinating and sometimes perplexing journey called life on earth.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to navigate everyday life in a calmer, more genuine and more compassionate way. Life is too short to be bogged down with frustration, bitterness, anxiety and stress. I can honestly say that this book started me off down a path where I now feel able to experience joy from even the smallest and simplest things, gratitude and fulfilment in my life and be in control of my emotions whatever is thrown my way. Thank you Judith so much for sharing your wisdom with the world.

They say feelings lead to thoughts and thoughts lead to action. It would then makes sense that if you want to change your life, you need to have a greater awareness of your feelings. For most of us, we can be overcome by a feeling and then it builds and builds to the point where we feel like we're drowning in it.
Judith's new book helps you to examine the most powerful feelings you have and then ease out of the ones that bring you the most suffering. Really looking at your deepest feelings can be a daunting task, but Judith lays out a way to do so which is easy to grasp and easy to put to use.
A few of the most powerful things I took away from reading this book:
- The spiritual meaning that depression holds and how depression isn't something we need to fight against
- How to use approach relationships in mindful and compassion way (rather than always acting and reacting)
- Four questions that can take you out of intense fear and give you peace of mind
- Excellent techniques which use the act of compassion to take you out of deep anxiety and bring inner stillness
- How to recognize when you're absorbing the toxic energy of others and how to stop it from happening
- How to protect yourself from emotional vampires
This is a book for people who are sensitive to the emotions of others and for those who feel very deeply. Not only does this book give you techniques to take you from a place of being uncomfortable within your life to living with much more ease, but it also helps take you out feeling like you're at war with your fears and stress and allows you to gently, and spiritually, shift those feelings until you feel much better.
When I first saw the title of the book, I thought Judith had written about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Even though this book is not about EFT, ironically, the practice of EFT would be a perfect tool to use in conjunction with the exercises and advice she gives in this book.
With our economy causing as much distress as it is right now, for those interested in Emotional Freedom Technique, I highly suggest following this book up with 10-Day Money Makeover - Simple Steps to Create More Money and Financial Prosperity Using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

Judith Orloff announces she's a doctor right on the cover of her books. That's because she knows she'd lose a lot of potential readers if she didn't billboard her professional credential and, instead, announced, "My native tongue is intuition." Yes, it is, and she says that right in the introduction, and there's more where that came from. So her M.D. matters --- it separates Orloff from any number of spirit-drenched writers who will forever be banished to the New Age shelves.
'Second Sight' was how I came to her writing, and then I was drawn in more by her thrilling narrative than by her message. Orloff was a rebellious Las Angeles kid, with 25 doctors in her family, who was intent on forging an original path in life. Her tale has a twist, right from the start --- as a child, she was a talented intuitive. But seeing into the lives of others and using those insights to help them? Not her thing.
Life schooled her. Yes, she became a psychiatrist and an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, but she also let dreams and meditation and premonition into her practice. Now she's the ultimate holistic practitioner: She takes what works, wherever it comes from.
Proof that Orloff is a gifted intuitive is 'Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life'. It's the right book for any season --- fear and negativity never go out of style --- but it makes special sense in March of 2009, when many of us are flailing in a sea of negativity and fear. Like "Second Sight", this book moves along briskly, in part because Orloff has great stories about her own wallow in the less useful emotions, but also because it's very much a how-to book.
It's one thing to tell you that accepting fear is a choice you make --- and that you have the power to choose courage. It's quite another to tell you how to accomplish that. Orloff smartly delivers two books for the price of one: an argument for emotional freedom and a set of strategies that may help you attain it. So along with the story of her mother's death, you get recipes to defeat depression, loneliness, grief, frustration and envy. And, at the end, you get a vision of how you live when you're free: "Manifest love with abandon."
In a time when many people have practical concerns that terrify them --- Will I lose my job? my home? my health? --- I decided it would be more useful not to write about the book but to grill Dr. Orloff. I appreciate her willingness to be badgered. As follows:
JK: Fear is contagious --- and so is fearlessness, according to the Nelson Mandela. How is fear viral?
JO: Our world is in the midst of an economic and emotional meltdown. We are inundated with fear --- from the news, in our own heads, from friends and relatives. I love the saying: `When one fearful person talks to another fearful person, it's like passing fire to a scarecrow.' Fear is incendiary. It gains power from our insecurities and grows the more we focus on it. There are real things to be afraid of, but we must try to face them from a calm, centered place rather from frenzy.
JK: You spent your first few weeks of life separated from your mother --- and spent decades fearing abandonment. Is it common that fear is learned in childhood? How, short of therapy, can we check that out in our own lives?
JO: Fear is learned from the moment we enter the world. Fearful parents make fearful children. During childhood, we have traumas, letdowns, poor parental modeling. I am passionate about being free, so I want to fight to overcome fears in myself. In the book, I talk about Four Questions to Transform Fear. It starts with naming what scares you. If you can do that, fear won't take you by surprise.
JK: You write, "Fear is the mother of all negative emotions." No way to work around it? Work up to it?
JO: In the book, I suggest starting with smaller fears first --- don't start with your mother! But you can't postpone or avoid this confrontation. If you don't make it your business to overcome fear, you better believe it will overcome you.
JK: You write, "What underscores fear ....is the feeling that you won't be all right." Well, what if not being all right is the realistic likelihood? How can we deny economic meltdown, loss of income, etc?
JO: Yes, there are real events that trigger fear. What I'm saying is that we have a choice how we deal with fear. We can go down for the count and be paralyzed. Or, with courage, we can move forward towards solutions and keep focused on the present and how we can better it, instead of catastrophizing about the future. You've got to work fear down, not up. Otherwise your fear may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In the book I view emotions as a path to awakening. The role of fear, as I see it, is to teach us courage. Westerners aren't typically thinking about courage in their daily lives much. But now, with the economic crisis, ordinary people are asked to find courage like never before. Think about it: If you didn't have fear, how could you develop courage? We need this point-counterpoint to grow.
JK: You write, "Fear renders intelligent people dumb, so they're not clear-headed or intuitively in synch enough to make brave decisions." If true, we're screwed, aren't we: deer in headlights.
JO: First, you must say "no" to fear instead of indulging it. You are more powerful than it is. The philosophy you take about fear shapes how you deal with it. I see fear as a shrinking of my soul and a waning of power. I hate that. I won't stand for it. I hope you are as angry as I am about how fear can eclipse our radiance and clarity if you let it. Breathe. Center. Be extraordinary. Take positive steps to correct a situation. I can't tell you how many times I've been trembling in my boots, but I went forward anyway. Courage doesn't mean you don't have fear. It means you don't let it control you.
JK: You write, "Once you're aware of how fear works, you can stop the cycle." How? What are the techniques?
JO: To shortcircuit fear and turn off you fight of flight response, you can train your brain to send chemicals to counteract them. With a calm biology, it's easier to find courage by practicing the combined techniques below to quiet your system. So...
-- Eliminate caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants; these fuel the fight-or-flight response.
-- Avoid people who reinforce your fear--they are biological irritants; stick close to emotional nurturers.
-- Stay away from violent newscasts, traffic jams, arguments, or other stress inducers.
-- Take small steps in a direction to solve the problem that is causing fear.
JK: You talk about fear and courage in spiritual terms. How do we access this side of the problem/solution?
JO: I see emotions as a path to spiritual awakening. The purpose of fear is to help us develop courage. The purpose of courage is to free ourselves from fear. For millennia, the masses have been manipulated by leaders who instill fear in them. Why? Because that's the quickest way to control people.
JK: Let's say we succeed in tipping the balance. How do we protect our new courage: avoid bad news, keep away from losers?
JO: In the book I have a chapter on Emotional Vampires, negative people who can bring your mood down and sap your energy. Stay away from people with a victim mentality. Especially in these times, we need others to lift us up, to support us in being courageous and free, not doom-and-gloomers who lead the way toward depression. Also I recommend taking news fasts instead of being addicted to listening to fearful newscasts. Go out for a walk. Play with your kids. Take a deep breath. Be grateful for your life and the love in it. The power that comes from loving is the greatest source of emotional freedom.

This is a well-written, insightful book for anyone struggling to understand themselves or a loved one. After reading the chapter on empaths, I thought, finally, someone out there "gets" me. I had my mother read it, and she said she wished she'd read it long ago. Dr. Orloff knows about what she speaks, and I continue to find her words of wisdom and exercises both comforting and encouraging. In fact, my copy of the book is tattered from me re-referencing the contents.

I must admit I had high hopes of this book given all the good reviews. However, it was a big disappointment. The book is very new age (energy psychiatrist . . . really?). There was a lot mentioned about meditation, spirtuality, etc. Sure meditation and spirituality is important but we don't need to hear this over and over again. There were some information presented on fear, anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc but nothing you can't find in another isolated book on each subject. Overall, this book is nothing special. Save your money.

I recently started studying various alternative healing approaches, and I discovered Judith Orloff by accident (or was it really an accident?) on YouTube. After listening to some of the videos on that site, I came to the store.com and searched for her books, and came across Emotional Freedom. The title alone seemed to speak directly to me, as I always that I was at the mercy of my emotions. I bought it, read it every day, and have been totally amazed! Her extremely practical suggestions, her ability to personally relate from her own life experiences, and her kind tone made reading her book a truly inspiring experience for me! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants help in finding their inner strength. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dr. Orloff!

She is a wonderful writer who is able to connect with readers at all levels of spiritual development. This book is on the very front of my bookcase along with her other must read books. After reading "Emotional Freedom," I am certain that Dr. Judith Orloff has created her most complete, timely, and important work to date. Rare is it to find a self-help book that is as useful to the seasoned reader and practitioner as it is to the novice. While I have spent many years in pursuit of emotional freedom, along with many years of spiritual cultivation, I found Dr. Orloff's ideas and suggestions extremely useful and affirming. Full of simple and profound truths, I highly recommend this to those who are seeking happiness, peace, and joy. By incorporating the techniques and wisdom discussed in "Emotional Freedom" into your life, you can count on having better days.

Thank you for this book has provided me with tools I can actually use. Shown me that I am not alone, someone much smarter than me, has had the influx of other peoples emotion spilling onto to her causing her to feel bad, when it was not hers to own, and just like Dr. O, I too have experienced this. I can now more succesfully move away from energy that depleats me, having bounderies that are healthy. I too have sensed things in people that I could not put into words, now I respect my intuition and trust myself. I am happier now.

This is one of those refreshing self-help books that is like a great conversation with a wise friend. You can read it from the start, like a text, or open it anywhere and just jump in. Judith writes from a place of honesty, and makes the benefit of her training as 1. a doctor, 2. a psychiatrist, and 3. an intuitive seer, accessible.
I've learned a lot from her.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I could not put it down once I started it. There is so much to learn about emotional freedom, emotional freedom is about choosing how your react emotionally instead of just having your buttons pushed to the max and getting angry and then dumping that anger on others. I really had no understanding of emotional freedom like i do now after reading Dr. Judith's art. I learned that emotional freedom is about trying to find tenderness for yourself and others rather than to be ruled by hatred and anger. I feel that now I can over come these emotions and try to live my life base more so on love and tolerance. My family and I are going through a very hard time right now, as are many others in this economy and I felt a sense of peace reading this wonderful book! Thank you so much Dr Judith!!!!!

When I picked up this book after reading Positive Energy a few years ago, I hope it wasn't more of the same. I loved her previous book and after reading this one, I am even more convinced that Dr. Orloff is right track on here. I have sound so many useful tools to get a handle on things going on in my life. I'm taking those baby steps that she refers to and slowly but surely it is making a difference.
As a bonus, I was thrilled and honored to hear her speak here in Santa Fe.

Dr. Orloff's work is so helpful in this time of financial and emotional turmoil. As an intuitive myself, I like the way she connects the mind and body on a very deep level. Her work is very progressive in the field of psychiatry, and she gives us all, great solutions, on how to solve deep emotional issues. This book couldn't have been published at a better time and I really want to thank Judith from the bottom of my heart for touching me in a way that has helped me to get through each day! I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone that I know!

After reading Dr. Judith's book I realized there was hope for my very good friend who fights continually for emotional freedom. I decided to share this book with her and found that we both received a great deal of information on how to achieve happiness through emotional freedom. For my friend, focusing on the positive has been a challenge and for me it has been defining my own space. How fortunate for us to have come across a book that would cater to both our needs. We read together, discuss each chapter and create short term goals based on the information provided. We are achieving our goals of emotional freedom one page at a time. Thank you Dr. Judith.

Emotional Freedom is a complete and powerful guide to living fully within your emotional power and learning to trust your feelings. Dr. Judith Orloff is one of a handful of truly innovative psychiatrists that understand the value of healing includes more than simply psychological implications of the intellect, but also embodies the flow of energy and soul-level work. This book is truly a gift, especially the chapter on "Combating Emotional Vampires," which is a must read for anyone that has heightened sensitivity.

This is a wonderful book for helping people to take control and transform our emotions, rather than letting them run rampant and take over our lives. It was a much needed "manual" for me to help me deal with some overpowering emotions that, once they got out of the gait, were hard to reel back in. Now I know how. Thanks, Dr. Orloff!

I have not only read her book Emotional Freedom but also interviewed her for my radio show Journeys with Rebecca. I found the book to be very personal for the reader. Everyone who reads this book will see something of themselves in it. Or they will see something about others in this book that will give them a greater understanding of them and how they operate. This book is so timely right now with all of the changes going on in this world and through her book you will find techniques to help keep you centered and most of all aware of how you are feeling. It is a must for everyone's library. I am sharing it with my own family now and they are excited to have the information for transformation!

This book tries to be a totally comprehensive guide to dealing with all the possible types of negative energy in your life, which is noble.
Unfortunately, by trying to cover every nook and cranny (energy vampires, depression, loneliness, grief, envy...), she skimps on actual, helpful, practical advice.
It doesn't really do a suffering person much good to hear, "Let it go," or "Confront the person from a place of center," when the whole point is that the emotionally stuck person doesn't know HOW to let it go or HOW to find their center in the midst of chaos. Duh!
Positive Energy, her last book, was a lot more focused and helpful. Emotional Freedom is good if you're looking for a sort of overall guide to what *might* be ailing you, but if you're emotionally overwhelmed already, forget it.

Judith::I was reading your book last night (I am an Empath-Rock) and thinking how you have created a new nomenclature for teachers of intuition to use that is simple, clear, pragmatic and student friendly. The way you teach and talk about intuition, healing and spirituality is very similar to my teacher style. I refer to your writings in my program and your books are on the reading list.

I love Dr. Orloff's work. She really knows how to simply and succinctly give readers techniques to deal with the today's stresses and other negative emotions. I also really enjoyed the chapters on Emotional Vampires and how to deal with them. Emotional Freedom shows us how to become heroes in out own lives by learning how to set boundaries to honor ourselves and transform anger, loneliness, fear and envy rather than simply "reacting" when our buttons get pushed.

Emotional Freedom not to be confused by EFT is and inspiring, insightful, practical way to deal with the parts of your life & self you would like to improve. Although there are many self help books out there that seem to restate the obvious I found this book to be extremely authentic, and helpful. There are many practical exercises to help you deal with everything from being stuck in traffic to people that zap your energy. If your looking to really start an emotional freedom journey then BUY THIS BOOK!

I heard Dr. Orloff in a radio interview, and then ordered her book. She came to Boulder for a book signing a few weeks later. Emotional Freedom is written in a very clear, engaging and comapssionate manner. I am still reading it, putting it down, processing the wisdom and trying to make it meaningful for my life. I have recommended this book to several people.

Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life, by Judith Orloff, comes at a perfect time, as most of us are experiencing at least some negative emotions in this economy.
This is a big book--over 400 pages--and is a bit intimidating. However, Orloff encourages us to take our time reading,to take "baby steps."
Orloff defines emotional freedom as: "It means increasing your ability to love by cultivating positive emotions and being able to compassionately witness and transform negative ones, whether yours or anther's."
Orloff is the pioneer of what she calls Energy Psychiatry--blending traditional medicine, intuition, energy and dreams.
She talks about our vital life force energy (or Chi, to the Chinese,) that flows through our body and is intuition. This energy is also all around us--so life force energy is within and without, affecting us.
Part I "Tipping life power of emotional freedom," includes a self assessment test to compare before and after you do the work. She discusses the 4 components of freedom and the roles dreams play in our lives.
Part II "Your tools for liberation," include a practical guide to dealing with the most difficult emotions.
There is a quiz to help you determine what your emotional type is--the intellectual, the empath, the rock, the gusher. She discusses the pros and cons of each and how to find balance within each.
The book includes advice on how to reprogram ourselves to build inner calm by facing anxiety and worry.
As an eco-friendly Feng Shui designer, I really appreciate how she discusses energy and intuition--because both play a large role in my work. Orloff understands that life force energy (as well as negative energy,) surround us. I would recommend reading her book slowly with a book that influenced my practice: the award winning book, HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET, because it will help you raise the energy in your home which will help alleviate stress and other negative emotions.
I also recommend THE ART OF EXTREME SELF-CARE, because it teaches us to love ourselves--key in Orloff's work, as well.

More a self-indulgent memoir than an exploration of new ideas or research. If author's references to herself were a drinking game, you'd be unable to sober up until two days after finishing the book.

I started this book on Cd. I am on near the end of CD 2.
So far, I learned she is well spoken, flowery writing a lot about her family, her teenage rebellion and the fact that she is a physician comes from a family of strong women who were physicians and a lot about her practice.
So far, she uses a lot of I, me and my and it is a lot about her and her intuition.
There are so many positive reviews here, I am feeling like the only one not finding any advice, tips or instruction.
Am I the only one here?
Where are the tools? How far into the book does one need to go to get to the meat of the matter?
Thanks.

Please RateLiberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life
Therefore, I am always intrigued when an author combines schools of thought as well as techniques. Though some authors cannot do this successfully (it can easily come off as confusing), Dr. Judith Orloff manages to do it well in her new book, Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life.
The book takes you through seven transformations and each chapter is full of helpful advice, stories from Dr. Orloff's practice and interesting background information. For example, she gives brilliant insight and advice regarding depression and anti-depressants. However she states, "I want to emphasize that taking any medication is a start and not the whole answer." and follows that thought with non-pharmaceutical suggestions to help work through depression, such as trying some over-the-counter supplements, exercise and adequate sunshine.
All of the transformations follow in this manner. Dr. Orloff discusses traditional therapies and combines it with alternative thought, theory and techniques. She can sound academic in places but balances it with helpful, easy-to-read bulleted lists and quizzes. For example, she lists the signs of reliable intuition versus irrational fear (a VERY helpful guide!) so that in the midst of fear you can easily pick up the book, find the two lists and make a determination if you're acting out of fear or intuition.
Emotional Freedom provides two things that GPYP purposely avoids: dream interpretation and spiritual guidance. Readers always ask me about these two subjects and I rarely have a good resource to recommend, but now I do. Dr. Orloff handles the depth and breadth of these intricate and sensitive subjects extradordinarily well.
Emotional Freedom also tackles subjects near and dear to GPYP such as like dealing with narcissists, borderline personalities and other "emotional vampires," as well as self-esteem, patience and courage.
Each person is responsible for his or her own personal tranformation and finding the resources to enhance and develop it. Having an arsenal of good go-to books is important which is why I recommend certain books and am continually on the look-out for excellent resources for my readers.
Emotional Freedom, at 376 pages, is dense, well thought-out and well written with a friendly tone. The thing I really liked about it was being able to pick it up and turn to any page, read a bit and find a helpful nugget of information or advice.
Although Emotional Freedom does not gel completely with GPYP teachings, it is a nice supplement. It is provocative and powerful as it provides guidance for those seeking another solid resource for their personal transformation. I recommend this book to my readers.
