l see that the review's are all over the place, but I enjoyed this novel. I enjoyed how the story started and their friendship and then romance built slowly. Less than 1/2 through the book was slow for me, no action, a lot of hate from the former duchess. But, then all heck breaks lose and it was fast paced until the end. Something happens at the end, with the former duchess that had me scratching my head. Not going into spoiler's, but everything happens off page and then boom we are told something that effects her future.

There is passionate lovemaking, out of marriage, mildly descriptive. We have many twists, secrets, suspense and a whole lot of drama. I enjoyed this story, and have the next two in the series purchased.

I also agree with other reviewer's that at times, the dialogue was modern, but I still enjoyed the journey of reading this story.

Everything with our couple ends HEA, no cliffhanger's either. I am not going into the story line because I can't compete with the publisher's blurb. Just what you will experience reading it. (ljb)

This was a historical romance with a lot of depth to it. I loved the hero, Rowan. He was a very appealing character with just the right amount of vulnerability and strength. The heroine, Wynne was a little harder to like. She was strong and independent minded but I found her too stubborn and unbending. The plot was full of suspense and surprises....lots of twists and turns I didn't expect. Sometimes I found the dialogue a bit stilted, but because I enjoyed the story so much I overlooked it. I have to say that I found this novel engrossing and was eager to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I am interested in the next novel about Rowan's sisters.
An Affair Before Christmas (Desperate Duchesses - Bk 2) :: When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Fairy Tales Book 2) :: When the Duke Returns (Desperate Duchesses Book 4) :: The Ugly Duchess (Fairy Tales) :: Much Ado About You (Essex Sisters Series Book 1)

Good, if too complicated plot. Characters well drawn, but then the author gets sweet and everyone forgives everyone. The duchess should not be so easily forgiven for her unbelievable viciousness to a small boy. She made her choices as a young woman and took her bitterness out on anybody within reach. This is something I find so unbelievable about so many regencies.

This is the 1st of a trilogy. It is definitely a stand alone. The story begins with actions which is constant but not perpetual. Twists and turns lead the readers through this story. I found it enjoyable. I have also read the 2nd book. Besides introducing the characters there is no cliff-hanging ending so the stories can be read out of order, but I wished I had read them in order. I look forward to the 3rd story.

The characters were filled with so much life experience it clouded their judgement a bit. The blows kept coming to both characters but they kept loving fiercely. It was very realistic and fun. I loved the females survival skills and it was refreshing to see her survive in the wild and paint masterfully.

I started this book not expecting much but something to pass a few hours time. I was surprised at how I got pulled into the story and ended up really enjoying. Rowe and Wynne's story..and the redemption of the Duchess.

He believes care tests him. She looks for the good. He is a duke, she is an American. He breeds horses and she paints. There is a bitter old woman who doesn't want them to be together and a mystery of what happened to the heroine's mother. Despite .any difficulties, there is an HEA. If you want to read abounding society, this isn't for you. This is character driven.

This book is like several Historical romances, it insults the readers intelligence. A Duke of the realm talks to a peasant woman and obeys her when she chases him off. Now, that simply wouldn't have happened in the 1820s. Be considerate of your audience and use another plot device.

Was very disappointed with this book. It started off ok, but went downhill quickly. Really liked the hero Rowen; could not stand Wynne the heroine. Rowen deserved much better! Have read other books from the author and thought they were wonderful.

This is frustrating book, not good enough to enjoy, but not quite bad enough to stop reading. Rowen is a duke. The highest rank of nobleman, but you would never know it. He lives in a ducal castle and is engaged in breeding horses, but he seems to do so without any staff. And he seems to have no sense of the vast authority he should enjoy as a wealthy duke. It's just not believable.

This was a great historical romance, I loved Wynne so much, she was just such a beautiful person inside and out and could really bring out the best in people who had led hard lives. It was a wonderfully written book, I never found myself questioning the situation or become confused with what was happening in the story (I hate plot holes in books!) I love how the characters in this book are unique from the other books. I don't feel like I am reading a story that is the same as her other books, so I don't find it predictable which is great! The characters, the villains and the paths they take, are all different from each other!!! I am excited to see what K.J. Jackson has in store for the next one in this new book series!

Does fate really exist? All Wynne wants is to find her way out of the forest but she is lost and has no idea where to go. Rowen is just passing by when he hears a woman's voice he doesn't want to get involved as he has had enough of their problems. But once he comes upon Wynne and realizes that she has no idea where she is, he does the right thing and takes her home. But can Rowen get her to remember how she found her way into the forest? But he has bigger problems the Duchess has other ideas she wants Wynne to keep her company as she knows that it really gets to Rowen. But Wynne can't understand why he dislikes the old lady so much and she just wants to go find her mother now. She has started to remember but they aren't good things and she knows that something bad has happened. When she learns the truth she doesn't believe it she knows that her mother is out there somewhere.
Rowen knows that he to do something to help her but that doesn't go according to plan and he almost loses her for good? A well written read.

I just love Ms. Jackson's work and I loved this story! She creates such brilliantly complex, deep characters...characters with good and bad qualities, which serve to make the character more relatable and real. She also is able to create imaginative, interesting and unique storylines that truly stand out in a genre (Regency romance) that has become predictable, stale and rather hackneyed. This story had it all...angst, suspense and danger, love, personal growth and understanding and more. Heck, it even had a feisty dog! The writing was impeccable, too. All in all, this was an outstanding book and I can't wait to read more of Ms. Jackson's amazing work!

I've always loved a good Regency tale, and especially so when the author does something creative and original while still staying at least broadly within the societal framework expected for the upper crust in that period. KJ Jackson has definitely achieved that in this book. She's a new author to me, but if her other stories have equal quality, in terms of compelling lead and supporting characters, strong plot, and excellent writing, she will definitely be among my Regency faves. As for this book, as you can guess, I found it to be a wonderful Regency story and highly recommend it.

This was the first book by K.J I read. As I read the 1-3 star rating all I could think is you are like the dowager! "A duke talking to a peasant" you must not have read the whole book then *eye roll* "that wouldn't have happened in the 1820's" I HAVE to meet the near 200 year old that posted that. Yes, some of the dialog was from this decade I would like to know how you know, and read a book of yours set in the same era. Why must people be so cynical? Any who, when many other authors write about side characters in a seperate romance I stop and just move along. K.J. has entrapped me in her skill and style of writing I am so happy that I stopped to read this!

I give it a good 3.5 stars. Maybe it's this "book funk" I'm in but the story while well written, the characters developed, the plots nicely done it just didn't do it for me. I didn't witness/feel/experience when the H/h fell in love, where it just clicked for them. I didn't find the chemistry. I loved both Rowe and Wynne just not as a couple.
There were extremely SLOW parts that, to me, lasted for ever. But as I said could be part of this darn "book funk".

All in all a good book and I will be coming back for a reread in hopes that I may change this whiny (?) review.

If you like your historical romance novels to have some weird, yet interesting twists and turns, and not set in the heart of London, then this book will be right up your alley.

I thought the story had quite an opening, such that for a moment I thought it was about a time traveler. However, by the end of the 3rd chapter my mind was set to ease. The story has a sadistic twist that is actually quite interesting and draws the reader in because you cannot quite put your finger on what has really happened and what will happen as you can with many of the other romance novels.
I loved Wynne’s strong personality, her willingness to pull her own weight and not rely upon others to provide for her. Most of the story through I was thinking her mother and Wynne had to have stumbled upon her fathers noble family and met some controlling end, as is the case in many other romance novels as well, however, that thought was quite wrong.
Some parts of the book dumfounded me and I thought my patience with the characters was at an end, I wanted to shout at the characters to open their eyes to each other, but I understand why K.J. took the turns she did now that I have finished the book.

The story is well written, with all the elements a good historical romance should have, with well drawn characters, and in this case a double happy ever after for both Rowen, and his extremely spiteful dowager duchess.

I love Historical Romance and this was like no other I have read. The development of the major characters of Rowan and Wynne were spot on. Loved their names also. KJ Jackson also added numerous plot twists and mysteries along the way deeming this book a very worthwhile read. I enjoyed it immensely.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

One of the things I enjoy most about this series is how each book has such a different tone/feel to it. This book has a classic gothic novel feel to it, very much like what would have been popular in the regency era, but without the comic absurdity usually found in those books.

I really enjoyed the heroine, Wynne’s, unique method of painting, it was an interesting and insightful concept. I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t go into more detail.

As with the rest of K.J. Jackson’s books, I was drawn into the story from the beginning, found the characters engaging, and the twists and turns of the plot an enjoyable jaunt through the author’s imagination. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

This wasn't the best read as far as fast paced page turners go, but it has substance. With a long book there is a lot to put in place and that was the situation here. There are secrets, pain, love lost and gained, and a past too painful for all to think of. I enjoyed it a great deal by the end, but again, I felt it moved very slowly.

Absolutely loved the book!! Rowen recuses Wynne from a thief. She believes she in American and not England. When he shows her his castle she starts to remember. You have heart ache, ugliness, passion, intrigue, danger, mystery and love all wrapped up in a wonderful read!!

I had trouble putting this one down, just loved it! I was quickly drawn into the story from the unexpected beginning, enjoying the flow of the story, the well developed main caracters, the humour, the drama, how the MC's interacted and affected each other, and well.. everything. I was very well entertained.

I absolutely loved this! My first choice is paranormal romance with historical being my second. I found that there are a lot of (hate to use this word) cheesey historical romances out there. That was not the case here. This book was amazing! I read from start to finish, ignoring just about all else around me. The writing itself hooked me from the first page. While I do remember our H from a previous book, this is definitely a standalone with a HEA. Our h was a strong character and though our H had a tortured past he did not let it own him. A great and timeless love story. I can't wait for more from Ms. Jackson!

A wonderful book of the genre with a very courageous and interesting heroine and a plot with lots of twists and turns. An ending more interesting than the usual birth of the heir. The author should keep those books coming.

It was hard to decide how to rate this book. There were portions that were light and almost fun to read about. The lead couple have trying pasts which made me want to root for them. But mostly there’s an underlying evil in the tone of the plots and actions of several characters. Also, things were not adequately cleared up and explained making the end unsatisfying.

fabulous, oh sure we knew she would not listen to Rowe, because she was so use to looking out for herself after she lost her memory, that was expected. But the plot was fantastic, i thought the dowager was going to mess things up for Rowen by announcing his illegitimate birth to her high society friends, but, she fooled me, Wynne was fantastic, a clue in the painting? fantastic. Loved it way to go Kate.
