First off, I love the Bridgerton family - except for the Cynster family they are my other favorite historical family. The love, the wit, the dialog between these siblings and their wonderful mother are unequaled in any other books. Each Bridgerton is so unique - and each story so different. Benedict and Sophie meet 2 year before when she sneaks off for one night like a Cinderella at the masqued Bridgerton ball. Benedict is totally captivated by the lady in silver - but since she is living the life of a servent in her stepmothers house she is certainly not worthy of a Bridgerton. She flees at midnight and Benedict has no clue who she is - and for the next 2 years his mind is always searching for the mystery woman. Then quite by accident he meets her again, oh he does not know it is her - and of course Sophie does not tell him and he falls in love with her all over again. Can a Bridgerton actually marry a servent? This story is just so full of love - and Benedict is just so wonderful and his family so willing and accepting of Sophie - I just could not put this book down. When you read a Bridgerton novel you just feel the love and the romance and it is oh so wonderful. Absolutely a 5 star plus book!!!

This is the 2nd book I have read by Julia Quinn. I wasn't impressed by the 1st one I read and was hesitant to read another of hers but I'm glad I did. An offer From A Gentleman was a fantastic book with a great storyline. Sophie Beckett is the illegitimate daughter of an Earl who doesn't acknowledge she is his daughter and doesn't treat her with anything more than his obligation. Sophie's only friends in life have been the servants. At age 7 (I believe) Sophie's father marries a woman, Araminta, who has 2 daughters around Sophie's age and Sophie is excited that for once in her life she may have a real family and real sisters. Wrong! Araminta, the evil step-monster, and her step-sisters treat her poorly and when her father dies he leaves Sophie as the slave to Araminta and the daughters. The night of the masquerade ball (Sophie is in her early 20's at this time) Sophie's maid dresses her up beautifully in hopes that atleast for one night Sophie might feel like a beautiful princess at the ball. But she must be back by midnight so she isn't found out. There Sophie meets Benedict Bridgerton who is taken with her immediately and vice versa. Unbeknownst to Sophie, Benedict is one of the most saught after bachelors in London. Rich, handsome, charming and from a great family. Sophie doesn't reveal her identity to Benedict by keeping her demi-mask on all night. That night what Ben and Sophie share is magical, intense, and oh-so romantic! It's a real love at first sight moment, but the author wrote it where it doesn't seem superficial. It seems like their souls connected and that they have always "known" eachother and waited all their lives to meet on that night. After that night they are both haunted by eachother...dreaming of one another and what could be. Sophie knows she could never be with Ben, because she is just a house maid, and Ben searhces for Sophie for years, to no avail. Then one fatefull night he rescues her from an unfortunate situation, all the while not knowing that this is the same girl who has haunted his dreams. This is where the book takes off and soars. It was beautiful watching Ben fall in love with this housemaid Sophie, but almost feeling as if he's betrayiing the lady he met at the ball. But it's her!!!! And he doesn't know it!!!! He feels a deep soul connection with Sophie and she with him and she is torn knowing he could never really be hers so she keeps the secret, that she is his mystery woman, to herself to save herself the ineveitable pain and heart-break. That is all I'm going to say about this book without giving it away, but there is so much more to this story. Please read it, it's sooooo good I couldn't put it down....literally. The dialogue between them is great and there is so much sexual and romantic tension that you just melt waiting and waiting. Benedict is always flirting with Sophie with his great sense of humor and vice versa. It was great the see these two spar and banter back and forth without really saying what they wanted to say. Sigh! My only complaint...I wish it would have been longer! I can't wait to read another of Julia Quinn's books now!!!

I enjoy Julia Quinn, having read some of her more recent novels and finding them quite enjoyable, I purchased the whole Bridgerton Series. When I read a series, I read it in order without fail. Book 3, An Offer From A Gentleman was a hard book to get through. I found it so hard to get through, that I put the book down for three weeks. I had read other reviews of like-minded people who advocated skipping this book. And I almost did.... thankfully, once I got past Part One the story improved and I actually ened up enjoying the book. (When reading the first part all I could picture in my head was the cast of Ever After - a good film to be sure, I just couldn't get it out of my head). But, my advice, dont skip the book. Skim through part one, you wont loose any details. In the first few pages you will recognize its a twist on Cinderella, so you know the step-mother is a ..... the step-sisters are.... and she goes to a ball and meets her prince charming.....just start with the second part. There were times I thought the Heroine was a tad unrealisitc in her reaction to not being immediately recognized, and at times I thought the Hero was also unrealistic in his reaction when he eventually did discover who she was. Its worth reading, if not just from the beginning.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I have read it 3 times in 6 months. It's that good. Julia Quinn writing style is so great. You fall in love with Bridgerton family in this one. Julia Quinn once again prove herself as a best story teller among all. This is definitely one of JQ's better books, in my opinion. I loved how Sophie completed Benedict. He was lost with out her. It was magical without being goofy and childish.

Both characters felt "real" and made me believe they were in love with one another deeply. Both had great senses of humor too, which is always a plus. JQ is such a master at weaving a fairy tale and this book is just that. Benedict and Sophie are such dynamic characters in their own right that it's only a matter of time before the sparks fly. If you long to be swept into the lives of two enchanting people, I highly recommend this one. This book had everything you need to create a good romance: a dashing hero, a beautiful heroine, a person who always seems to interfere with the hero and heroine, and most of all...PASSION! From page one the characters in this charming book reached out and grabbed me. Page after page I just got sucked in deeper until I closed the book with a happy sigh.

The plot moved along at a great pace. Full of enjoyable supporting characters and stories. An Offer From a Gentleman was an emotional roller coaster, and I felt all the pain and joy they did. It was written with an amazing level of intensity and feeling that my heart was pumping furiously with the palatable passion in the story. The relationship between the leads is endearing. The secondary characters are enjoyable as well. I was so engrossed, I read it in a day. Wonderfully written! And very sexy historical romance book. An Offer From a Gentleman is a book I know I will be reading for years to come. It's a keeper.

This was my first Julia Quinn book. When I first started reading this I though oh how sweet a spin on Cinderella, and then wham-o Part 2 happens. I love the connection between the couple. I love the little mystery of how he didn't know who she was. I love the Bridgerton family. Sophie and Benedict's story is a delight. It was witty and charming with just the right amount of swoon. This will not be my last Julia Quinn book.

I became a fan of Julia Quinn the moment I started reading The Duke and I, so I have looked forward to reading about each of these delightful characters. This book only added to my enjoyment of the Bridgerton Series. The story was well crafted to make a well known fairytale more fun, interesting, (and naughtier) to read. The characters in this story were written with a great vulnerability that made them seem more real than the usual storybook creatures. Our Cinderella- Sophie was strong in her beliefs but struggled between what she wanted and what she felt she deserved. Benedict surpassed the static Prince Charmings with his uncertainty and love. I found it hard to find a stopping point...if I could stop at all. While I am familiar with the characters that normally grace Quinn's pages, I discover more about them with each story. In this one, Violet Bridgerton made me laugh out loud with her strong and loving personality that had only been hinted at but I finally get to read. Can't wait for the rest, Julia!!!

I picked up An Offer From A Gentleman by Julia Quinn completely on impulse. I had briefly scanned the blurb and decided to try it out. I had at the time only read one other Julia Quinn novel, and didn't really know of her at all. From the first page i couldn't put this book down, and i finished it in two days! Julia Quinn is such a fantastic writer and i found myself laughing out loud at the antics of benedict and Sophie many times.

The two main characters, Benedict and Sophie are both likeable and very 'real'. The conversations and moments between them were so witty and hilarious! the plot isn't slow at all, and generally it was a joy to read.

The first part of the novel, at times annoyed me because i just felt that the whole 'love at first sight' thing was a tad unrealistic, but as the novel progressed and moved into the second part it began to unfold. It becomes more apparent that the 'feelings' Benedict gets (eg. when he can sense someone is watching him through the trees) are important to him and he follows his instincts.

Overall this book was a really pleasant surprise as i had no real expectations of a brilliant read. This novel was so funny! i am glad i own a copy as i will revisit it many times in the future! i recommend it to anyone who enjoys Julia Quinn or anyone who likes a generally light-hearted and endearing love story!

While not completely full of adventure (who doesn't know the story of Cinderella) this story moves at a good pace. The characters are relatable and it is easier to get in their heads and relate to them than previous Bridgerton books. The end is a little rushed and a hair over the top, but the pacing on the rest of the book (and the epilogue/second epilogue) make up for it.

I loved this book. Yes it is like the fairytale cinderella but is way more detailed and has a great plot. The characters are also so real. I loved the way Benedict would chase after and tease Sophie. It reminded me of the typical flirtations that go on in the beginning of every real life relationship. The supporting charcters are also given depth.

I felt that the scenes involving Sophie and Benedict were so steamy yet sweet and heartwarming.

I also found it easy to read because evryone loves Cinderella and the story would make you smirk when you realized what the author was doing to make it different then the original.

I'm going to try out some more of The Bridgerton series books. I love when an author includes re-occurring characters.

The Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn is one of my most favorite books to read over and over again; this time, the second Bridgerton brother Benedict met his match in Sophie Beckett, the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Penwood. This is a charming retelling of the Cinderella story but the focus here is more on the Prince Charming --Benedict. Benedict met Sophie in his mother's annual masked ball but he did not know it was Sophie because of her mask. He was immediately smitten and intrigued; while Sophie did the "run at midnight" but without the glass slipper. Benedict never forgot the lady in silver as what he started calling Sophie in his mind. He searched for her in vain. Then one night, he met a woman who aroused the same feeling as the lady in silver, the woman was Sophie Beckett whom Benedict rescued from a lecherous employer.
Benedict fell in love with Sophie, and yet he kept thinking of the lady he met in the masked ball. Sophie cannot bring herself to tell Benedict that she was the lady he met in the masked ball. This might be a true and tried story but leave it to Ms. Julia Quinn to throw in some twists that might not leave you at the edge of your seat but will make you satisfied at the ending.

This third book in the Bridgerton series starts off reminicent of the Cinderella story - complete with evil step-mother and two snotty step-sisters. I was a little wary at first thinking this would be a re-telling of the classic tale, but soon the story took on a life all its own. Sophie is a hard-working, kind and intelligent heroine. Her "prince charming," one Benedict Bridgerton, is indeed a charming and dashing and handsome prince. The little twist in the last few chapters was a surprising turn of events that I didn't expect.
My biggest problem with this book: Now I can't decide which Bridgerton brother I love the most! *Sigh*

WOOOWW! All I could say only Wow! I never thought a Cinderella Story can be so amuzing! Julia Quinn is a brilliant romance author.
Cinderella is for my child-hood age, but 'This story' is for my 'current-age' romance...

I read this only in a day! the romance is chasing me. Perhaps among the Bridgerton's I've read - Daphne, Anthony, Benedict. I love Benedict more...

The story is so natural...it seems I'm watching a cinderella movie, which I can predict the end, however I have to read it to find a satisfaction end. I cry and cherish for Sophie!

Oh, I love Benedict and Sophie's love story so much !! This should be more than 5*.

I just picked up this book yesterday and stayed up late to finish it... It was that good. This was an enchanting rendition of the Cinderella story, but so much more. There is so much to love about this book. The characters are so well written and the H/H really draw you in. You can't help but to feel for Sophie Beckett's plight. She is a strong heroine with so much spunk and spirit, that you can't help but love her. And Benedict Bridgerton was a marvelous hero. He was charming, caring, sensitive, witty, sexy, noble... All the things that make a wonderful hero. This story really grips you from the beginning and wrings the emotions from your heart. I laughed, I cried and I loved every minute of it. Thier's was a believable love. True soul mates.

This is one of my favorites of Julia Quinn's. It's definitely a keeper that I will read over and over again.

Whenever reading a Julia Quinn novel, it's always an all nighter for me! Forget the family, chores? What the heck is that? You want dinner? Here's the take out menu - call for delivery! The only thing that would get my eyes unglued from the pages, would be an emergency, and then the book would come along with me.
An Offer From A Gentleman has characters that are witty and humble with just the right amount of spunk and fire to their personalities. Having a Cinderella in the context of being able to keep her wits about herself and remain mostly practical except when they both come into contact with each other.
Benedict and Sophia both seeking the loves they felt was intangible was a clencher yet their souls told them otherwise. Thank Goodness for that! This novel was fun, adventurous and absolutely heart-rendering,
I was cheering when her step-mother got her just rewards! I guess my family is used to my laughter, tears and cheers when reading a Julia Quinn novel, and dare the person that tries to interrupt when I'm engrossed.
Julia, I look forward to your next novel with abated breath as always! You warm the hearts of many of your fans!

Wow, I was expecting this to not be one the of the stronger Bridgerton books, but boy oh boy, was I ever wrong! It was just as

much a page turner as The Duke & I was. When Benedict looks for

Sophie for almost a year, then finally gives up the search (but never the longing), I cried. But when he rescues her later, not

knowing it is his long lost masqurade queen, I felt hope. It takes a long time, and an accident in the children's nursery, but he does eventually learn the truth. The jail scene, near the end of the book, was one of my very favorites in the book. I also liked "My Cottage" and the scenes that were in conjunction with it.

This book is OUTSTANDING. I couldn't put it down. A truly romantic and moving story.

I've read all eight of the Bridgerton series (the first four are all fantastic -- the last two are by far the weakest), and while I know most people prefer Anthony or Colin, give me Benedict! I think what I liked most about this story is that the hero was actively pursuing the heroine through the entire book and didn't have any "issues" or "hangups" like the heroes of the first two books ("The Duke and I" and "The Viscount Who Loved Me," both great).

I also really loved Sophie and understood her plight. I've read a lot of comments about how other readers couldn't understand her decision not to reveal herself to Benedict immediately, but it made sense to me because of her fear of getting caught (she was facing jail time, and possibly hanging!) and her fear of him in general, getting too close, etc. After awhile, I guess she should have come clean, but I can understand how it became harder and harder for her to admit that she hadn't been entirely truthful. Plus, she still thought it wouldn't make any difference - it's not like she believed they would have a fairy-tale ending once he discovered who she was.

As far as Benedict goes, he came across as much kinder and sweeter than Anthony and more mature and level-headed than Colin (not that I don't love them both also, great heroes all). From his point of view, he was making her a good "offer" and we can't really judge his actions in terms of what someone would do today. He wanted to be with her the only way he knew how, and was willing to do whatever he could to make that happen.

Highly recommended for any fan of Julia Quinn and historical romances in general.

This is a republication of the book with an epilogue tacked onto the end, this means that the store won't alert you if you have already purchased the original. These books are delightful if you haven't read them but I did not appreciate spending 6$ for a book that I essentially already owned....

The Cinderella theme was a turn off for me. It took away from the story because I instantly knew exactly what was going to happen with the step-mother and step-sisters.

The romance between Sophie and Benedict wasn't great either. The obstacles on their path to happily ever after were the saving grace of the book. It was entertaining and I never struggled to get through any of it, it just wasn't anything more than average and forgettable. That's a huge disappointment after how much I enjoyed the first 2 books in the series.

Ah, those Bridgerton brothers . . . They do make a girl's heart go pitty-pat, and Sophie Beckett's heart is no different. Escaping to the masquerade ball of the season, she experiences a brief moment of freedom and happiness, two things that are sadly lacking in her life as servant to her horrible stepmother. She is also lucky enough to spend some time in the arms of Benedict Bridgerton, a man as gorgeous and sexy as his brothers. But all good things must come to an end, and when midnight hits, Sophie disappears, although she'll never forget her magical night with Benedict.
And he won't forget her, either. Captivated by the mysterious beauty, he sets out to find her, never dreaming that she was so close by, or in such a dreadful situation. True love triumphs in the end, but it is the journey there that is so enjoyable.
As with all her books, Julia Quinn has created characters that are both interesting and amusing. The stories are light-hearted and filled with love, passion, and above all else, romance. One can only hope there will be a story for each member of the astonishingly large Brigderton family, for they are sure to all be as wonderful as the first three.

This is easily the best of the Bridgerton series, though on JQ's website its said not to be part of the series. Which makes no sense but anyhow, that's what it says.
Sophie has had a crappy life but it has taught her to stand on her own, while Benedict wants to be seen as something other then another Bridgerton. The two meet in a great way, at a masked ball and in typical fashion he never finds out her identity before she runs off. The book really starts to role once the two re-unite but Benedict doesn't realize who she is.
Quinn does a great job dealing with the class difference between the two of them and Sophie's reasons for them not being together are sound and make perfect sense with the way she grew up. This is a heroine who makes the choices she believes are best, even if they don't make her happy. Benedict grows as a character (though he has his moments of bratiness).
JQ is generally very reliable for a good book but this is definitely one of her great one. Highly recommend

I do not sit down and write a review to any book. "An Offer From A Gentleman" has left my eyes wet behind my glasses (Something that a book rarely brings out in me), I dare say that JQ had succeeded in making this reviewer a tad emotional this evening.

I had just finished the last page of the book mere minutes ago, and had darted up to type down this review. So here goes...

Bridgerton is a name familiar in JQ's regency world, the men and women of a big aristocratic family that seem to be the catches of the season according to Lady Whistledown (Which I am like the characters adore her tidbits!!!) , This time it concerns Benedict Bridgerton, the second son (Good looks, wealth, charm everything you'd expect from any historical romance novel) But to me I found him the most interesting of the bunch really, and the most appealing I had wanted to know more and more about him since his mentioning in "The Duke And I" since he wasn't much mentioned but that ALWAYS make me more interested in a character, Anyways Benedict is being bustled about by his mother to get married...as usual he's in ball edged by his mother to go ask a lady to dance or socialize with her mother...and then he sees HER...

Sophie Beckett is a bastard, and is often reminded so by her stepmother and her stepsisters, (Sounds familiar?) , she is of course not invited to the famous Masquerade that the Viscountess Bridgerton is holding so she is merely to see to it that her stepsisters are at their best for the ball, she is done and finished and then she find's that the servants have conducted a plan to see her go and there she meets HIM...

It does start out like a cinderella story but I found it as it moves on a treadmill of emotion, it springs so true, I found Sophie to be such a wonderful character...so deep!!! I loved her!!!

I was spectacle about this book at first when I read about it Cinderella-esque story-line...but it was the best adaption of the fairy tale...I loved it! This is going on my keeper shelf obviously.

This retelling of the Cinderella story ( complete with the most wicked of stepmothers) is saved from banality by the quality of the writing and the strength of character of our heroine. The strict class consciousness of Recency England is the biggest impediment to this match, and overcoming that obstacle takes much of the book, but the plot surprisingly does not drag. Love those Bridgertons!

Oh Ms. Julia Quinn has out done herself again wit this Epilogue in my opinion. I found that this was almost or maybe more enjoyable that the original book. She was still able to write with her noted whit and humor and I thoroughly enjoyed every second that I was reading this story.
I thought that Hugh was just the perfect guy for Posy; he is someone to treat her with the love and adoration that she deserves. And I thought that reading the section where it was told from his perspective was charming and endearing.
I especially loved the line when Sophie is thinking about how Hugh doesn't remember how he takes his tea. Simply delightful.
This one was my favorite out of the lot and I firmly believe that anyone who loved the Bridgerton series definatley need this in their collection.
5 starts again for our wonderful author. =)

I began reading the Bridgerton series before I knew that it was a series. After beginning with book four I decided to go in order and thereafter have been reading in sequence. Books one, two, and four are fabulous. Three, not so. In all the other books Benedict is a non-character. I agree with another reviewer, all we know about him is that he is the tallest. This is a character that Ms. Quinn definitely short changed on her way to giving him his own story. Poor guy, all he ever seems to do is just hang around his brothers while they (Anthony and Colin, Gregory is still too young) are Bridgertons with a capital "B". Benedict has no substance. What does he do all day or even all night? If you are looking for clues in the other books, you will be sorely disappointed.

I almost gave up on this book. I would read a chapter and then go fold the clothes from the dryer. Read a chapter and walk to the mailbox. Read a chapter and (horror of horrors!) go watch mindless drivel on television. It did not capture me. I had to read over 250 pages !!! before I actually cared about EITHER character. Sophie was cinderella. Even so, I didn't particularly care. I forced myself to finish it because I have an unwritten rule with myself that I cannot begin a new book until I've given the current one a fair chance. It was a duty, and not one I relished until I finally became engaged in the lives of these two people. All the other members of the family were still as interesting as in previous novels. I got a sneaking suspicion that Ms. Quinn thought of Benedict as "number two" also. Her writing is wonderful. She tells her stories with wit and a charm which make me want to keep reading. But, for me, Benedict and Sophie never became my friends. He treated her, even before he began to care for her, in a manner which would never have happened in that time period. They were both incredibly familiar with one another, even in the presence of others (beginning with Mr and Mrs Crabtree) and not just while they were alone. A servant would NEVER have been so forward as to throw a candle stump at someone so high above her in rank. Yes, Ms. Quinn wanted us to see her as a spirited heroine but many, many of Sophies actions were ridiculous for a servant.

It finished well, not great, just well. Frankly, I was glad to get it over with because I have a mountain of books left to read. I'm thinking seriously about changing that unwritten rule. I've run across some real clinkers from some Regency romance authors lately but not, I'm glad to say, Julia Quinn. I think this was just a hiccup.

I'm an avid Julia Quinn reader, own every romance she's published thus far, and this one still gets my vote as one of her best. A classic Cinderella story with a Julie Q. twist.

Benedict Bridgerton is the second Bridgerton male; Sofia "Sofie" Beckett is the despised illegitimate of the late Earl of Penwood. Benedict has had life's every comfort and was surrounded by a loving family; Sofie was ignored and locked in a closet to polish shoes. They meet at a magical masquerade ball and sparks fly. Benedict falls like a rock. But at the stroke of twelve, Sophie disappears from his life, and Benedict searches for the woman he only knows as Her. By some strange turn of chance, they meet years later and again sparks fly. And although Benedict doesn't recognize the woman from the masquerade in the skinny little housemaid he has rescued, he can't deny the attraction between himself and Sofie nor can he deny the guilt he feels for falling for someone other than Her.

Being that this is a romance, it has a predictable ending. But the ending isn't the part that matters (although it is a splendid one, indeed!). It's the getting there. I've read this story over and over again, and I love it more each time I do. A surefire hit, Ms. Quinn. Bravo!

...Julia Quinn has extremely good timing and wit. Her novels are
always (with one exception I've read) funny, and enjoyable to
read. She can make you laugh out loud, not just giggle or smile, but
actually laugh out loud, which is a remarkable talent.
However, she
has two consistent problems, that are not only found in this novel,
"An Offer From A Gentleman", but in many of them. The first
is her wish to make her characters "deep". If we are all
honest with ourselves, we do not read romance novels so that we can
feel the complexitiy of the characters, and frankly, making them too
"deep" detracts from the story, which is going to end
perfect anyway. If they had real life problems, it would not, and
then, it would not be a romance novel. Miss Beckett and Mr. Bridgerton
manage to escape most of the pitfalls of being too "deep"
very nicely, but not completely. She is a servant, and so it takes him
a while to come 'round to the idea of marriage. But, once he decides
he will marry her, he convientently learns that it's all right after
all, because she was the ward (and the bastard) of the late Earl of
Penwood. Whew. It was such a reflief.
The second problem she
consistently has, is her "copy editor". He sucks. As in her
previous novel, "The Viscount who Loved me", I found quite a
few errors that are distracting, and frankly make me wonder how much
effort [she] puts into her books. On page 141 they have Mrs. Brigerton
speaking when she has yet to be introduced, and it should be
Mrs. Crabtree. On page 227, I believe she got confused about who was
speaking, because the way it's written Miss Beckett is saying
something she would not say. Finally, on page 242, Miss Beckett makes
reference to Mr. Bridgerton showing her sketches he had done, when I
distinctly remember her coming across them when he was ill, and
looking at them uninvited. None of these problems affect the main
plot, or make the reader fed up with the book, but if they were not
there, the book would be a less confusing read. It would also show
that [the author] actually cares about her characters.
"An
Offer from a Gentleman" begins as a Cinderella story, and
quickly, within the first several chapters, moves beyond the confines
of the traditional story. It's sweet, and the characters are fairly
romantic, more so than they have been in the last few books she has
published. I actually quite liked Sophie Beckett, but as with most
characters, she seemed a little over-the-top perfect. Benedict
Bridgerton was a much better hero than his brother Anthony, but I
think that was because he was not quite as "deep".
I
think everyone should read Julia Quinn books, because she is a good
author, if careless at times. She manages to make her characters
somewhat new in each novel, while infusing the stories with
humor. Hopefully, she will publish a spectacular next novel about
Eloise, or perhaps Colin, the next two in line to get married. And I
must admit that perhaps my favorite part of the book had nothing to do
with the main characters so much as the tension betwen Colin and
Penelope Featherington (another recurring character). I would not be
sad to see a book about them, althogh Colin has declared he will not
marry her...
All in all "An Offer from a Gentleman" is a
good romantic story, and certainly a step up from the last two novels
[the author] has written about the Bridgertons. I hope she continues
it.

Now I know that every book has a typo or two and most of the time they are easy to overlook, but about half way through this book the lovely Lady Bridgerton occasionally became Lady Crabtree. I mean, REALLY?!?! Who edits this? It's not like Bridgerton and Crabtree are remotely similar! It even carried through to the Q&A session at the end of the book. Apparently, the fourth book in the series is now called Romancing Mr. Crabtree. I hope you will excuse me but I'm not remotely interested in the story of Mr. & Mrs. Crabtree. At least not in the middle of the Bridgerton series.

This is Benedict's story. You have to love those Bridgertons!
Sophie is the daughter of an Earl but when he dies her stepmother who has always hated her relegates her to the role of servant. Well what Cinderella story would be complete without the Ball or the Prince?
Sophie sneaks into the Bridgerton's masked ball and right into Benedicts arms. Spending the evening dancing in his strong and handsome arms she is in heaven. Benedict can't believe how he is drawn to the masked beauty and does all he can once she vanishes to find her. She is going to be his wife.
This book will not let you down. Full of the wonderful and quirky characters, humor, and romance that are trademark JQ. You will not want to miss this one.

Julia Quinn's version of Cinderella may not be animated or featured in film, but it was just as entertaining as the Disney version and Ever After. I loved all the twists to the story that is Sophia's life. Although I plan to backtrack by reading the 1st & 2nd book of the Bridgerton series, you should still read An Offer From A Gentleman if you're a fan of Cinderella-and-her-Prince stories. Happy reading!

Wow! This book took my breath away! When I first started reading it, I had to look at the cover again to make sure I was not reading "Cinderella", but as the book went on, the storyline got deeper and it was a story all its own. It made me laugh and cry. I felt like I really knew the characters. They were wonderfully developed. I wish Sophie would have held on to her principles and morals until marriage though.....Benedict was just a dream. Caring, sensitive, gentle, charming. The perfect love story. I have read many frustrating books where the main hero is a arrogant, snotty jerk, but Quinn made Benedict the perfect fairytale prince. I could not put the book down except to run to get a tissue to dry my eyes! A MUST READ!!!!!! sigh...

I enjoyed this addition to the Bridgerton series. The author does a great job developing characters that we'll love, as well as family relationships we'd love to be a part of. It was a warm and fuzzy book without too much angst. The plot was good, but the tension and sizzle between the hero and heroine was lacking a little, making it not quite a page-turner. It was worth the time I spent on it, however, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Quinn has a subtle sense of humor that shines through in this novel. Simply put, this novel is a great deal of fun and is very creative. You do have to suspend your disbelief a fair bit in order for the novel to "work," but because the story is a rendition of the classic "Cinderella" tale, it is not too burdensome for the reader.
If you want a light-hearted, fun romance novel, grab this one off the shelf. The character development is excellent and you will find it to be a very satisfying read.

Even though I am an eclectic reader with a predilection for literary fiction, historical romance novels have been a pleasure of mine for quite some time. I was recently tempted, however, to give up reading them as I was unable to find any books that were of any interest to me. Luckily, I stumbled across Julia Quinn, who I am happy to report is not only literate, but writes entertaining romantic comedies with good characterization. An Offer From A Gentleman is charming and well worth reading. The heroine is strong and intelligent while the hero is vulnerable and appealing, a combination that I find greatly pleasing. The Bridgerton family is drawn realistically and Quinn makes the reader feel like a member of the family. The mother is particularly well done. Her interactions with her offspring, whom she is desperate to marry off, amused me vastly. I especially appreciate, however, that she supports her children to only marry individuals with whom they have a true connection. This is certainly not in keeping with the morays of the time period, but I like it anyway. The Whistledown commentaries are witty as well as operate as a fine device for filling the reader in on the plot without having to waste pages to do so. Whistledown's identity was plain to me from the first book, but I still enjoy that she has not yet been revealed.
I only hesitate to give the book five stars because it contained several trite scenes with hackneyed dialogue, such as the scene where Benedict meets Sophie at the ball. Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly enjoyed the rest of the book, particularly the part where the nasty villainess gets her comeuppance. I further recommend the "Duke and I", which I consider the finest book in this series.

I read this book in 2009 checked out from the library. On my own reading list, I rated it with three stars which is the top of my own rating scale. This is the same rating I gave all the rest of Ms. Julia Quinn's books.

This was my first Julia Quinn book and I enjoyed it very much; it was well written and developed.

The novel started out extremely predictable following the pattern of Cinderella. Luckily, the story evolved and followed it's own course. I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue, and the thoroughness. I disliked the monotonous of some scenes between Benedict & Sophie, and the predictablity of the parts that were just like Cinderella.

I would definitley pick up another one of the Bridgerton series based on this book.

This series with the Bridgerton's is very good. Unlike some series, the writing seems to deteriorate but this series keeps your interest and the story lines are unique. This was a very good storyline, deep, not artificial. The characters were real and you felt like you were living the story. I am going to move to the next book.

This is inspired by Cinderella. I wanted to hug Sophie so many times!

And her evil stepmother? Yes, I wanted to smack her, hard.

Benedict Bridgerton was a joy to read. I loved him, with his impish smile and his search for the lady in the silver gown.

A lovely story with laughter, tears and a wonderful HEA.

This story was entertaining, and the characters were well-developed, but this book was a Cinderella rip off. This book was my first exposure to Julia Quinn and I enjoyed it but cannot say that I loved it. I will still give this author more of a chance because it was good enough to see what else she has out there.

If you're looking for a romantic novel that is very original and terribly witty I do not recommend this book, however if you're just looking for a light and easy read you won't be disappointed.

This was a fabulous book. I picked it up on a whim at my RWA chapter's meeting three days ago. Then I made the mistake of opening the book up! Uh oh! I was mesmerized. The Bridgertons are a family I look forward to reading more about. I have my suspicions about Lady Whistledown and can't wait to see if I am right! Thank you to Julia Quinn for a very entertaining read. Sophie and Benedict had my heart from the start and never let go!

I have been waiting for this book and I was not dissapointed. An Offer from a Gentleman has an excellent cast of characters that are brimming with life and wit. Quinn is unique in her blending of emotion and humor in that she never wallows in melodrama, which makes a much more enjoyable reading expirence. In this book, Sophie and Benedict are rather complex and Quinn gives explination as to their personal feelings. Giving them not only a past, but demention. And giving the reader an understanding of why this is happening. So if you have ever been so exasperated with a character you have thought get over it already, this a book for you. Not only is it good reading, it's good writing.

I know many people absolutely adore this one, but to me it pales in comparison to all the other Bridgerton novels. My problem is that Benedict is just not that memorable. In the previous 2 Bridgerton novels, The Duke and I and The Viscount Who Loved Me, he is overshadowed by both Colin and Anthony. All we seem to learn about Benedict is that he is the tallest Bridgeton. I just didn't find him interesting enough to care about his story. As always, Julia Quinn's trademark humor is present and this story is her take on Cinderella. But I felt like she needed to remake a fairy tale to make up for a lackluster hero.

Julia Quinn is the funniest, most delightful romancer I have yet discovered, and this is not her best book. Not nearly as much fun as the usual Quinn book, the main characters' angst and bungling seems trite and unnecessarily drawn out. Only faith in Ms. Quinn's considerable talent kept me from skipping ahead to the end, but I wish I hadn't waited. When the end ... finally... came, vanquishing the wicked stepmother was exciting, but the love story was not.

Reading the back cover, one would think that the story seems too familar to be exciting. We all know the Cinderella story, but this book is so much more than that. Julia Quinn takes the story and sends it to new heights.
The love that Julia Quinn pens for Sophie and Benedict seems so real, that you can actualy feel it. She also had me laughing out loud at times. The book is also filled with other wonderful charachters. It is very richly drawn, the type of thing you can rarley find in a book. One that has "it"-the magic that sends you into a different world, and you feel as if it all really happened. I will treasure my copy and read it again and again.

I have read this book so many times I have lost count. It is my absolute favorite of all the books I have read from here - and I have read them all. I think it's the Cinderella complex in us all that makes it so compelling. I mean who doesn't want to be rescued from a plain old life of blah by a drich, handsome kind and loving gentleman!!!?!?
You should run out and purchase any book written by this very talented author, becuase none of them will disappoint!

Julie Quinn is one of those authors I pick up without hesitation. This book was fun reading while on the StairMaster but not up to her usual quality. Since it mirrors Cinderella (and JQ does a good job retelling an old story) saying the book was predictable would be redundant and unfair. But, the first two books of this series were fast paced with strong characters. Either the Bridgertons have become predictable or this book was written in haste. It lacked the spark I have come to expect from a Julia Quinn book. Unfortunately, this happens far too often when authors become popular and start churning out their books every three months.
One more book like this and I'll have to go back to being selective before buying Julia Quinn's work. If you want a quick read that isn't going to distract you from anything else, this book will fit that bill.

Julia Quinn's new book, "An Offer From A Gentleman" is my new favorite book! Usually my books go in one of two piles: The "I'm going to read this again!" pile or the "Gee, I'm gald it's over!" pile. "An Offer From A Gentleman" is definitely "read again and again" material.
This new Cinderella revisited has some great moments including "love at first sight", a damsel rescued by a gallant hero, and loving family interference. The main characters are charming and the stepmother is suitably wicked! Ms. Quinn takes her readers through a classic fairy tale and adds a great story line and beautiful tender scenes. You'll love the "Happily Ever After" ending!

I had been anticipating the next book in the Bridgerton series and, to be honest, did not have very high expectations for it. It has been my experience that by the time an author gets to the third book in a series, it is basically a repetition of the first couple of books. However, I was delightfully surprised when I finished reading "An Offer from a Gentleman". It was a quirky book with fun and engaging characters. Benedict proved to be as devilish and comical as his brother and sister!I highly recommend this book! The only reason I did not give it the full 5 stars is because I felt the ending was just too rushed.
Nonetheless, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series about Colin...at least I hope its about him :O)

I agree with the other reviews that said the hero was lacking. He constantly harassed the heroine to be his mistress and pouted when she refused. He never had much thought on how she would fair being his mistress. The heroine was a doormat and thought the hero had every right to just ask her to be his mistress and nothing more. Where is her self-respect. The main reason she gives for not being his mistress is because she doesn't want bastard children. He tells her he would still love them. How selfish can a man be. How could he love these hypothetical children if he is willing to let them carry the shame of bastardy and that they would probably always think they are not worthy. He talks about marrying someone in the future like this should be perfectly understandable. He would have legitamate children that would always be looked on as better than her children. What upsets me is that the heroine never really expresses her self with these kind of concerns or that she deserves marriage or nothing else. He is redeemed a little to late in the book for me.

In this extended story of Sophie and Benedict's life together, the spotlight is on Posy Reiling. At the end of An Offer From a Gentleman, Violet Bridgerton became Posy's unofficial guardian. This story picks up three years later where Posy is still matchless but incredibly happy living with the Bridgertons.

This is a sweet story where Posy follows in her sister Sophie's footsteps and has her love at first sight moment. It's a nice followup to one of my favorite books.

I disagree with some of the reviews saying the hero should not ask Sophie Beckett as his mistress. The book is so well written that you can feel how Sophie feel. In that time period, mistresses are very normal. Benedict and Sophie are love at first sight, but author did a wonderful job represent to us how the love grow over time. When Sophie nursed Benedict, when Benidict sees pain in Sophie's eyes and wanted to be her anchor and protect her. Sophie's delimma, her battle between her moral standard and her passion, it tugs your heart string, when you read the book, it is as if you are with Sophie, it is so rare to read such book.

Yes, I know it starts out as the classic Cinderella story, but with a twist. "An Offer" being my first novel from Julia Quinn was impressively well written and had a whole lot more going for it than just a romance novel...this story had more depth than many Romance novels which gave it a distinctive edge above other books in this genre...I would have preferred a little more passion in the physical sense but I was nevertheless touched and riveted by this story...Good place to start reading Julia Quinn if any! Keep up the good work, Ms Quinn but please add a little more steamy scenes!

There was definitely humor and all the characters were having a great time. But it went on a little too long. I might have enjoyed this more if I had re-read some of the Bridgerton stories before buying this because keeping up with all the characters got tiresome. In the first two books of the Bridgerton series Benedict Bridgerton is barely mentioned, he pretty much fades into the background, so I honestly was not looking forward to this book. However, I immediately fell for him and his kind heart. The author truly made him into a normal every day good guy who is not full of himself like most Victorian characters. As for Sophia I really liked her too, she's a character worth rooting for.

As usual the interaction between the Bridgerton clan is fun and loving and adds to the greatness of the book.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

I love the Bridgerton family. The first 2 books of this series, The Duke and I and The Viscount Who Loves Me were excellent. This book is no different. It is filled with love and humor and an excellent storyline with witty dialogue. Benedict and Sophie are well rounded characters and the inclusion of the entire Bridgerton family adds many delightful scenes. If I hadn't completely enjoyed the first part of the book, I would have still given it 5 stars just for the scene in the jail. I can't wait for Colin and Penelope's story.

Quinn brings back the beloved Bridgerton family from previous books with _An Offer From a Gentleman_. Yet again, I thoroughly enjoyed one of Julia Quinn's books. Quinn takes a turn on the traditional story of Cinderella, having a glove instead of a shoe left behind. Benedict (or Bridgerton #2) plays the role of Prince Charming, searching for his elusive "Cinderella", never knowing that it is the maid he has right in front of him. Of course, there are cameos of Daphne from _The Duke and I_ and Anthony from _The Viscount Who Loved Me_. I enjoyed the fairy tale take and I hope to see more from Quinn soon!

I LOVE Julia Quinn. She does not disappoint with this, her latest book about the Bridgerton family. Quinn's charmingly ironic wit and cheerful characters make this a fun and interesting read. The plot is typical of a regency romance, but Quinn's lovely writing style more than makes up for it. This, and ALL of Quinn's other books, are must-reads.

only in this one, one of the stepsister is not mean. It was a great spin off on cinderella and I truly enjoyed it. Quinn's novels in the Bridgerton series outweigh any historical romance novel or series I have read. Her characters are complex, intriguing, witty, and intelligent. Her words make pages turn quickly. All in all, each novel is a success.

Believe in love at first sight, and enduring soulmates? Then this one is for you. An Offer From a Gentleman

One thing that I feel Julia Quinn does well is humorous dialogue. I never fear that I will be entertained by the banter between character whether major or minor.

This is the third book from the Bridgerton series and I haven't been disappointed.

I do have to agree that I don't understand why Sophie wouldn't want Benedict to know who she was? If some awesomely attractive and wealthy man was after me, I think I would let him know.

I do love how Julia Quinn has her own writing style. Her characters speak like normal people. Easy read and enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this book, as well as the others in the Bridgerton Series. All are well written, witty, and keep you amused throughout--from beginning to end. I must admit I have my suspicions as to whom Lady Whistledown is--Ms. Quinn promises to reveal that lady's identity at a future date. A very lighthearted and heartwarming romantic series. Will she write about every one of the 8 Bridgertons? I suppose I will have to be patient and find out!

This was a great re-telling of the Cinderella fairy tale. I loved the heroine and the hero. Benedict is sexy as hell, (but the drawing at the front is not too good, so he kinda looks disfigured there). The Brigerton family is fab also. I loved how Sophie stuck to her morals, almost all the time. It was so adorable how they fall in love with each other all over again. I loved the fact that they showed their lives after seven years for an update.

I was a little aprehensive about this book at first, very weary of the Cinderella plot, however found myself falling in love with the character's as soon as I met them.
I read through a couple other reviews and I cannot find myself agreeing that Sophie or Benedict lacked character, and I personally rather enjoyed a plot revolving around Sophie's illigitimate birth. I thought it brought up some interesting issues concerning a very real curcumstance not uncommon during those times. In today's society the exact same situation would be irrelivant (my husband was born out of wedlock and NO one thinks anything of it), however back then, it quite obviously was the difference between being a member of society and being forced into servitude (and honestly back then many illigitimate children had far worse fates than becoming a servant as Sophie had).
I enjoyed this book very much, although yes, I do agree that it perhaps lacked a lot of the spunk that's in her other Bridgerton novels, but I still couldn't put it down until I had read the last page! Still very excellent and I can't wait until June when her next Bridgerton novel comes out, "Romancing Mr. Bridgerton". For those of you who don't know, it will be Colin and Penelope... hmmmm... I guess Colin will be eating his words when he said that he wouldn't marry her in "An Offer From a Gentleman". ~*giggles*~ I can't wait!!!
And I'm starting to gather my own list of suspects as to just who Lady Whistledown is... ~*smile*~ I can't wait until her identity is finally revealed!

First let me start off with "I LOVE JULIA QUINN" she is probably my favorite romance author. Almost all of her books have cheered me up and made me smile while reading them. That's why i was so excited when i found out another of her books had been published, that is until i read it. The characters were very flat and one dimentional and the plot was dismal and boring. There didn't seem to be a love story there at all. It just seemed that Ms. Quinn was trying to pump out another book quickly and didn't really care what the context was. First off, the whole illigitimate theme that was running through the entire book became boring very quickly. It wasn't a point to base the entire plot around, which eventually it became. Both sofie and Benedict didn't have much of a personality, and my favorite characters were those who were only in the script for about 2 pages. I do love Julia Quinn, and i will most likely buy her next novel, but i was very disapointed in "An offer from a gentlman" and hope that her next work will be better.

Julia Quinn had never disappointed me in the past, and she didn't start with this one, either! The characters are great, and not just Benedict and Sophie, but everyone involved. We really got to know more about Violet Bridgerton and some of the younger children that hadn't been involved really in the previous books. As others have said, once the story broke away from the Cinderella plot and went with JQ's original work, it was fabulous. Not that it was bad before :-) I just can't wait for Colin!! I'd been waiting for Benedict's story for months, and it was truly worth it. Read any JQ novel you can get your hands on!

I would have given this book 4 stars if it had an ORIGINAL idea for a story line. Instead, Quinn has copied the Cinderella story. Sophie, an orphan, lives with her mean stepmother and mean step sisters. She is made to clean and serve. She attends a ball (surprise), but has a mask so no one knows her identity. She meets a handsome man. Midnight chimes, and guess what.....she must leave. Instead of leaving a shoe, she left a glove. Now Mr. Handsome Man has to go in search of the women who fits the glove.

The fact that a publisher paid Quinn for a copy-catted story is pretty astounding. I could have done the same.

The story is entertaining enough once the whole Cinderella theme isn't the main focus.

This is the absolute worst novel by Julia Quinn. I have always loved her books, but after reading this one I was leery of continuing to read anything by her. Happily, her next few redeemed her. I would not recommend this one at all, unless you would like to despise the "hero" and feel ashamed of the "heroine". Of the Aurthor I enjoy Julia Quinn's work and hope to read more from her.
