I bought this book, excited to read another Bourne book. I was extremely disappointed. The plot is so fragmented and exaggerated as to be hard to enjoy. The characters are a strange collection, and fit together awkwardly. Bourne is hardly a minor character in the book, and is a mix of unbelievable and pitiful.
I am a doctor, and tend to notice the medical and physical aspects of the injuries, fights, treatments, etc... I don't expect most books to be medically accurate, but most are close enough to not be detrimental to the plot. This book contains such absurd events that one would think that the author got his entire biological and scientific knowledge from comic books and a few episodes of ER and CSI.
Overall this is a very poorly written book. I can't believe the editor let it through.

This book is simply terrible. I have never before encountered such a poorly written book. It is just full of cliches and buzz words. The dialogue is wooden and often just laughable. The book is completely plot driven. The characters are caricatures. The only reason for the existence of the book that I can think of is that it is intended as the basis for a screenplay. It certainly is not worth reading.

#7 in the Bourne series. Jason continues to do several impossible things before breakfast, this time against his nemesis, the Russian assassin Arkadin.

Error p.8 "there are poweful elements in my government aligned with Iran because we (Russia) want their oil.."

Russia is usually the world's largest oil producer, some 10-11 million barrels a day and exports 70% either as crude or refined products. Woeful ignorance shown here.

Only my German nature got me through this terrible book. I'm really glad I got it from the library rather than lightening my billfold. This whole book is disjointed, too many characters of too little significance. The creators of this dead Ludlum series need to just give it up. Each one is worse than the last.

I, too, was looking forward to a new Jason Bourne book. I have found the last two to be quite good. However, I must admit that I was quite disappointed with this effort. The point of the Bourne series, at least I thought, was to focus on Bourne and what he does. Unfortunately, this book does not do that. It, instead, focuses on all the other characters, basically leaving Bourne in a "supporting" role. Then, what is even worse, not all the loose ends are tied up. I certainly hope the author gets back to the basic of the Bourne novels in his next effort.

Very very dissapointing. I never write reviews since I don't consider myself an expert, however I felt it was my moral obligation to warn of this book.
The pace is extremely slow and boring, too many nostalgic moments and slow narrative that took away from the pace. Bourne himself was transformed into this dull character in this novel (never thought I'd see it happen). It seemed at times that the author was simply stuck and put a ton of fillers. A slow read, don't expect much. I am truly sorry for anyone who purchased this one.

Bought this quickly in an airport..reading only briefly the cover as I picked it up (this is my excuse)

It's really very clever by Mr Van Lustbader, to actually have the last laugh on us.. that the book is in fact the "bourne deception" itself, rather than just the several thousand random words which you will find printed on the inside pages. Even the reviews on the back of the cover are not ones from this book, but from the bourne series.

I didn't expect this to be a classic.. but you would hope some actual work was done to make a book carrying a franchise name, perhaps just somebody reading it before publishing would have helped.

I can't imagine trusting either this author or publisher again.

Former CIA assassin Jason Bourne believes he killed his Russian equivalent Leonid Arkadin (see THE BOURNE SANCTION) when he pushed his greatest enemy into the ocean. Soon after that incident, a highly placed Fed makes a deal with a Russian to kill Bourne in exchange for killing a terrorist. The Russian is Arkadin who survived his watery grave and in Bali he fires at Bourne, hitting him with the accuracy of the best snipers, but somehow though severely hurt Bourne escapes and lives.

While Arkadin tries to assassinate Bourne, a US commercial airline is shot down over Egypt. The American Secretary of Defense blames that deadly assault on Iranian terrorists sanctioned by that country. War seems imminent, but Bourne is caught in the middle learning the truth about double dealing on personal and state levels.

Fast-paced and very exciting though over the top of the pyramids, the latest Bourne thriller is a fun tale in which action, believable or incredulous, and more action overwhelms the plot as the sum of the subplots is greater than the story line. Additionally, none of the characters including Bourne and Arkadin seem even partially developed; compounded by the hero's limited role; as the feats of daring do supersede all else. This is only for die hard fans of the saga.

Jumped around too much with too many characters. God's seeing into the future is just not in a Bourne novel. If this is where they are taking the writing and character, then this was the last Bourne novel I will read..

Long, convoluted, confusing story. Good writing skills with regards to describing place and human feelings. But the plot was weak and far fetched. Despite the title, Jason Bourne was not the main character in this book.

Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Deception

Lustbader should stop writing Bourne novels since he clearly had not read The Bourne Identity in which Robert Ludlum had mentioned that Jason Bourne was born in 1935; no matter how good an operative was in his past, 74 is not a good age to achieve the tactics Lustbader asked him to do.

Twice Lustbader had brought up that the US Mint printing money, does he know that the Mint has never printed a single bill. The bills are printed by BEP, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

I was very pleased to see another "Ludlum" book in the Bourne series. After listening to the first CD of the audio book, I was very disappointed. Shallow characters, flimsly plot and unnessary biased political comments. I did not even feel like finishing the book; I set it aside for the time being.

The BOURNE DECEPTION picks up where THE BOURNE SANCTION left off. Jason Bourne's nemesis Arkadin is still hot on his trail and the two continue their struggle, reversing roles of hunter and hunted. When Bourne is ambushed and badly wounded, he fakes his death and goes into hiding. In safety, he takes on a new identity, and begins a mission to find out who tried to assassinate him. Jason begins to question who he really is, how much of him is tied up in the Bourne identity, and what he would become if that was suddenly taken away from him. Meanwhile, an American passenger airliner is shot down over Egypt by what seems to be an Iranian missile. A massive global investigative team is assembled to get at the truth of the situation before it can escalate into an international scandal. Jason Bourne's search for the man who shot him intersects with the search for the people that brought down the airliner, leading Bourne into one of the most deadly and challenging situations he has ever encountered. With the threat of a new world war brewing, Bourne finds himself in a race against time to uncover the truth and find the person behind his assault, all the while being stalked by his unknown nemesis.

If you can take this book for what it is(a spy novel featuring Jason Bourne) and not expect it to be the the second coming of The Bourne Identity by Ludlum than you are in for a pretty exciting read. In the Bourne Deception there is plenty of what we look for in this genre, goverment conspiracies, espionage, great action scenes, lots of clever plot twists, milatary action and lots of gun play. The story moves at a fairly brisk pace although it does bog down a little at times but them resumes back to its brisk pace. For me the only part of the book that I thought did nothing to move the story along was when Jason was at the bull fighting ring, this part could have easily been omitted and you would never have missed anything that was relevant to the outcome of the book. I keep reading reviews that the Jason Bourne has become one-dimensional, I disagree. This is the 7th Bourne novel who much more is there to know about him, it is like any series with recurring characters they are just simply put into new scenarios. Most of these novels are long enough, I would not want to read about his entire background and life story in each new novel.

If you do decide to read this novel, go into knowing that it is not the magic that we loved in The Bourne Identity, but it is however a very good thriller written by Eric Van Lustbader featuring Jason Bourne. Even Robert Ludlum himself could not recapture the magic from The Bourne Identity in his two follow up novels featuring Jason Bourne, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Neither were anywhere near as good as the original. When reading the new Bourne books just remember you are reading Eric Van Lustbader not Robert Ludlum and you should still enjoy this wonderful series.

I will echo the thoughts of some previously who think this book is complete junk. It's not really even a Bourne novel as he's not really even a main character. Don't waste your time or money on this. Lustbader has destroyed this series.

I bought "The Bourne Betrayal' without realizing it was written by Eric Lustbader. When I did realize it, I was so disappointed because I couldn't imagine a "new" writer doing the series justice. It took me YEARS to finally read it. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! Upon finishing it, I immediately went to the Kindle store and bought all of the books between Ludlum's last and "The Bourne Betrayal". I've enjoyed every one. My only complaint is the author's repeated use of "d'you" no matter the nationality of the character speaking. I find it very distracting if the character is anything other than American and it kind of throws me out of the story while I go back to see who was speaking.

Did you enjoy the original Bourne books by Ludlum? I loved them and many other of his novels. This series isn't even close. I rarely not finish a book even if it isn't good. I thought I'd give the series a try - however, after less than 100 pages, I had to stop.

I listened to this book on audiodotapes and have to disagree with such the negative reviews. I agree that this book is a bit different from Robert Ludlum's originals, but so are the times. I can't beleive that people find it hard to follow the plot. It's fast paced and generally delightful. I would certainly recommend this book for entertaining reading. The end leaves doors wide open for the next sequel. I'll definitely buy it.

Another great Bourne book. It's been years since I did not wait for a new book to come out in paperback before purchasing it. I'm a huge Bourne (book and movie) fan, so ordered this as soon as it was available. As with the other Bourne books, I could hardly put it down. Fantastic story.
