This is an amazingly inspirational story. Most men in Rick's position do their time in prison, get out , then continue the same lifestyle within a short time because they don't know what to do. But Rick changed his life and began giving back to the community. Helping youth at risk kids proves one does not have to go down this path. I have a lot of respect for this man. His money may be gone, but who he is inside is one great person and an inspiration. The book was well written by Cathy Scott and Rick Ross.

A fascinating view of a non-suburban lifestyle. Well worth reading. Believable. Had I grown up like Rick Ross (as opposed to middle class plus), and had Rick Ross's talents, I might have done as he did.

Fascinating tidbits that surprised me include that:

+ People in public housing projects who were suddenly (drug) rich bought Mercedes but did move out of those Projects.

+ Rick Ross's main drug supplier was in effect none other than the CIA.

+ The growth of Rick Ross's drug business is remarkable similar to the early growth days of McDonalds and Korvettes (as described in "The Fifties" by David Halberstand), particularly in the incredible demand for the product.

+ When Rick tells his lawyer that the LA police are planting evidence, that lawyer finds the assertion so jarring that he doesn't believe Rick.

+ Overall the legal system did work. For example, those corrupt LA drug squad people ultimately were prosecuted by the Federal Government.

I have watched documentaries on Free Way Rick Ross but I was delighted to be offered a chance to listen to the audio book. Let me just say that I was not disappointed. He approached selling drugs as a business man does his empire. A man who could not read ended up making millions of dollars... How does that happen? Of course he goes to prison and not only learns to read but learns enough about law that he is able to get is sentence reduced. The possibility that the CIA was involved makes this an even more compelling story... The reader wont' be disappointed.

Narration: Initially I thought that a more urban voice would be needed to better articulate the story. However, I soon enjoyed Kevin Pierce's narration. His even tone 'toned' down a story of drugs and hustling in the ghetto! 4.5 stars for you sir!

This is an excellent book by an intelligent and extraordinary man who took the heat for the true criminals at the top. The book kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, and it never dragged. It is amazing how the true criminals at the top got away. Some have a show on Fox News Channel, all were given immunity, another given permanent US residence, and the top one was given a presidential funeral in a "hero" fashion. Thank you Rick Ross for writing about your story and the truth. I look forward to your next book, and may you always be successful.
