At first police don't believe him, until the other musicians turn up dead. Tyler asks Danni Cafferty and Michael Quinn, who have a reputation for solving cases, to investigate his friends death. The killer is looking for something and as he becomes more frustrated he becomes more reckless. Danni and Quinn are trying to keep people safe while trying to figure out who the killer is.

This is the third Cafferty and Quinn book. It is good suspense book. I was not sure of who the killer was until the reveal. Someone is killing musicians in New Orleans. This has a lot of the same characters plus a whole bunch of new ones.
Danni Cafferty is a artist and owns a antique store. Her boyfriend is Quinn. They work with weird cases that might have evil or power items. She sleep paints clues in the middle of the night.
Michael Quinn is a P.I. He has a lot of history. He was a athlete who caught up in drugs and died and they saved him he changed his life. He became a cop. His girl friend is Danni. He worked first with Danni's father. Taking care of weird mystical items.
Tyler is in a band. He is playing a saxophone that his deceased friend owned. While he is playing his best he sees his friend's last few moments and realizes he was murdered. He goes to Danni to tell his story.
Danni and Quinn become part of the music scene to figure out who and why someone is killing musicians.
There was a few love scenes in the book. Lots of murders. I do like reading about Danni & Quinn and their friends.
I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give a honest review of The Dead Play On.

In the heart of New Orleans, someone or something is murdering the musicians, the murderer searching for something these musicians had. But Arnie Watson looked like a suicide and when his friend, Tyler, plays his sax, he finds he sees the death of his friend. Shaken, Tyler runs to Danni Cafferty and Michael Quinn, two people who he thinks may be able elp him. For if Tyler goes to the police, he thinks they would laugh their butts off after hearing his story.
Dani and Michael find Tyler’s story not so strange especially after finding out about the murders of other musicians. Now it is a race against the clock as Cafferty & Quinn try to find the answers to the murders and stay one step ahead of the killer. Because time is running out as the killer moves in for his final kill in order to get what he wants.
I got to admit I really enjoy Heather Graham’s Cafferty & Quinn novels. They are a little bit mystery, a little bit paranormal and set in one fantastic city of New Orleans. In this latest addition to the series, the author delves into the heart of New Orleans with its musicians and how they are being killed. I liked how the author keeps the spirit of New Orleans alive through out the whole book. She really delves deep into the music scene there and you find that you can’t help but want to go hear these great performers. She really gets into the jazz scene down there and the readers are drawn into that world one page after another. I love reading about New Orleans as it has that old world flavor and charm that just appeals to me and how this author weaves the myths and legends about it into her series books. This is an author who knows her history and this town. That right there sealed the bill in enjoying this series as a whole. With each book in the series, she delivers an engrossing story to get lost within and characters that are so well written, you feel like you could walk down into the French Quarter in New Orleans and meet them for coffee. The story flows smoothly and at a nice even pace that had me flipping the pages to see who or what is killing these talented people.
Meet Danni Cafferty & Michael Quinn. Partners and lovers, these two are trying to find the balance in their relationship and boy is it hard, especially for Michael to let Danni be the independent woman she is. He has got quite a protectiveness that bordered on over protectiveness at times. Those scenes had me wanting to smack some sense into him as Danni tried to get him to see her point of view. These two made a name for themselves by solving some more of the unusual crimes in New Orleans and when Tyler comes with this weird tale, well let’s just say from then on the reader will be taken on a ride of their lives alongside Danni, Michael and their friends. All the characters are well written, multi-dimensional and fairly step off the pages and into your room. Their voices in the DEAD PLAY ON are quite distinctive yet never overshadow one another in the book. Rather it complements the story perfectly as we get some different point of views even as a killer starts his spree killing to gain what he feels is his and his alone.
THE DEAD PLAY ON is a wonderful addition to the Cafferty & Quinn series with the author’s trademark writing style, her penchant for history mixed in with real life and a mystery that will leave you guessing until the end who the killer is. After I finished this latest addition in the series, I really wanted to know when book four is coming out. Such a great summer beach read that I can’t help but to read again, this time as I laze around the pool and get lost in the magic of Heather Graham.

This author always has the ability since the first time I picked up one of her novels to provide a book that reinforces when finished why I keep turning the pages to begin with. It always seems to be a adventure in itself because I never know the treasure I will find inside that she has shared regardless if I am familiar with the characters or not. In this one Quinn and Danni are once again will be driven thanks to their wonderful characters to aide someone in need. One evening while Danni is grabbing takeout walks along Bourbon and gets sidetracked by the music. She is also with Wolf by her side she catches the sax player staring at her but at first tries to talk herself into that it is her companion he is staring at but it was not the case. Turns out though she did know him after he turns up at her shop and he introduces himself. He tells her why he has came and that he needs their help because if anyone was to believe him and look into it would be them. Friend and fellow musician was murdered but it was made to appear he had did a drug overdose. Since my interest was already picked from what I had read so far this was going to be the means that pops the top and blows it wide open to I am now digging in to stay. Really liking the different and unusual also is just a bonus because this is many a time how this author rolls with the stories she weaves that this fits it to the tee. As the events unfold and the characters emerge and take their places you are smack dab in a pulsating suspense that involves murder and a killer must be caught sooner rather than later. The characters use their magic on you take you with them and also that does happen so rarely you get taunted by the killer from the pages up close and personal it seems. Thoroughly enjoying also the relationship that continues to grow between Quinn and Danni makes these two a addictive duo. Perfect formula with the unusual and suspense that when you reach the climax you will find you are left with your mouth hanging open and some might say you have a glazed look when you get finished. Reading as it is meant to be with it not getting any better than this but am certain this author will find a way to do just that with the next one.

This is the third in the Cafferty and Quinn series by Heather Graham. It isn't necessary to have read the first two, but it will be helpful, just to know the background of the two main characters and how they came to be a team. Someone is killing the musicians of New Orleans in pursuit of a magic sax that grants the musician playing it, extreme talent. The killer is getting more and more violent in the manner of deaths as their desperation grows. Danni Cafferty and Quinn, along with their posse, are in a race to stop the killing. Fortunately for them, they have enough musical talent to sit in with a band in the Quarter, in order to ferret out info. The first two books dealt with paranormal activity, whereas this one deals with the perception of magic in an inanimate object, the basic difference between the first two and this one. One is asked to believe in the existence of evil objects in the first two, whereas this one, for those who don't want to suspend disbelief, addresses how one can believe an object, in this case the saxophone, is magic, and can allow the musician to play in a fantastic manor with little talent. The conclusion being, of course, if you believe something hard enough, it comes to pass. I love all the characters in this series, some we've come to know in previous books, and some who are new to the neighborhood. The side trip to Walter Reed hospital is a nice touch, to remind us of what our soldiers have sacrificed, if not really necessary to the plot. [Sidebar: I had to smile at the epilogue that includes a gig for the band at Walter Reed. They play from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. As the wife of a musician, I'm here to tell you that no band takes on a 10 hour gig, even for such a worthy venue :) ]

1 Billion Gold Stars for this series of Heather Graham. Book 3 The Dead Play On tells a tale of missed guided youth that built up into anger and murder of several people that didn't know who he was. But what really was good about this book is who they brought the Military in and how people were helping them out. This book needs to be read with a opened heart and mind. A book that I well recommend to everyone.

This is the 3rd Cafferty & Quinn novel by Heather Graham, taking place in the very familiar area of New Orleans. Graham's love of New Orleans shines through in this series, especially in the familiarity of the area and music and food. An artist herself, Graham's soul seems to resonate with the people who inhabit the area, making the stories she writes come to life as a mixture of fact and fiction.
There's a killer in New Orleans - and he's silencing talented musicians across the city. It takes the unusual skills of Danni Cafferty and her partner Michael Quinn to put together the subtle clues to find out the reason behind the crimes, and the connection they need in order to put a stop to the violence and bloodshed and save their friends.

I waffled a bit on requesting this through NetGalley but, obviously, I decided to go for it. It was the New Orleans setting that did me in more than anything and I’ve been liking Heather Graham books enough so I figured why not? I haven’t read the first two books in the Cafferty & Quinn series but considering I’ve been reading her books all sorts of out of order I doubted it would make a difference. It didn’t.
It starts off with a sort of supernatural bent and it strings the main murder mystery together but it’s ultimately very thin, to the point where I wouldn’t consider this story supernatural at all. Sure, it’s mentioned that Cafferty’s dad collected weird objects and it’s mentioned repeatedly at the store she owns houses a bunch of objects in the basement that could be cursed or possessed or other ghostly things but none of that is actually seen. This serial killer keeps attacking people because of a supposed special saxophone but the way the story’s wrapped up it’s largely irrelevant and there’s no supernatural aspect to speak of. It was kind of a disappointment.
I found myself bored a lot with the story. New Orleans wasn’t its own character in the book like settings can be in other Graham novels and that was a disappointment too. I like her Krewe books because she makes the place come alive. I didn’t feel that here and I felt let down.
The dialogue was a bit bland too. Very stock, a bit too neat in exchange, making the characters monotonous and their interactions Lifetime movie awkward. Just very stilted, unnatural and a bit too set up. I felt myself cringe a bunch of times as the characters were interacting because it just didn’t feel like a natural flow of dialogue.
The sex scenes, I’m not sure why they’re in there. I have no doubt I can imagine that an adult couple has sex but the act of coupling is glossed over but there doesn’t seem to be a reason for it. It’s definitely a constant thing I’ve found in Graham novels that she wants to include a hint of sex to demonstrate that the characters can screw but it’s largely irrelevant to the plot. It doesn’t really do anything for the characters involved; I don’t find their relationship deeper or more meaningful. They like to bang. Most humans do. I mean I don’t need explicit sex scenes all the time but these start off bordering on hot then the scene ends in the next sentence as they’re lying naked with each other in the bed. I don’t know. It bugs me. If you’re intent on giving me a sex scene then give me a sex scene. Make me FEEL it. But these just feel thrown in there, they’re not hot, they’re not intense, they’re over and done with and mean nothing to the story. Since it’s not about Cafferty and Quinn’s relationship (although there is tension between the two, the story isn’t about them) there’s no need to have it there as it is.
Overall this book was meh. I didn’t hate it but I certainly didn’t like it. I didn’t care for any of the characters, all of their interactions were gawky and forced, the supernatural element is nonexistent and I don’t know why it’s even insinuated for how irrelevant it is. Yes, it plays into the motive behind the murders and I did like how that line of the story ended but at the beginning there was a supernatural element involved and then never again. I don’t know why that was there at all. I just didn’t feel involved with the book. It was talking a story at me instead of making sure I was part of it. I have quite a few of Graham’s older works piled up and ready to read and this hasn’t turned me off of her writing; I just wasn’t thrilled with this book. Maybe the first book in this particular series would be more my style with a heavier supernatural element to it but I’m not going to tackle it too soon.

Another winner by Heather Graham. This is book 3 in the Cafferty, Quinn series and it does not disappoint. There is everything I like in a book, mystery, intrigue, romance, a bit of paranormal. I have read every book Ms. Graham has written and they just get better and better. This could be read as a stand alone book but the first two were so good you can not go wrong by reading them as well.

The Dead Play On
Heather Graham
Mira, Mar 31 2015, $24.95
ISBN 9780778317739
After three tours in Afghanistan, saxophonist Arnie Watson returned to New Orleans as a civilian only to die of a drug overdose. His grieving mom gave her son’s sax to his best friend musician Tyler Anderson. Using the sax at a gig, Tyler has visions of Arnie’s fatal last night that leads him to believe his buddy was murdered. Tyler retains Danni Cafferty to investigate Arnie’s death.
NOPD Detective Jake Larue leads the investigation into the recent deaths of musicians that strongly imply a serial killer culprit. He asks former cop turned private investigator Michael Quinn to help with the official inquiry. Partners Danni and Michael compare notes as each believes possession of Arnie’s sax is the motive for the murders.
The third Cafferty & Quinn urban fantasy (see Waking The Dead and Let The Dead Sleep) is an interesting paranormal whodunit anchored by a haunting atmospheric New Orleans. The mystery entertains the audience though the paranormal is somewhat downplayed compared to the usual novel by the queen of supernatural investigations Heather Graham. Readers cheer on the brave protagonists especially when they join the band as bait making for a taut exciting tale

Musicians are being murdered in New Orleans and Danni and Quinn soon discover that sometimes the line between passion and obsession is too hard to draw for some people and only in uncovering the truth can they hope to save everyone from the hands of a deadly killer in this thrilling romantic suspense. Lots of twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end and there was no way I could put this story down until I knew who done it – and I can’t wait for the next Cafferty and Quinn case.

I enjoy reading Heather Graham and have recently been to New Orleans so this book intrigued me. At first it seems that the saxophone that belonged to now dead Arnie has some sort of mystical powers because when his friend Tyler plays it he envisions what really happened to Arnie (everyone assumed it was suicide). There is someone out there killing musicians to gain possession of this special sax. Cafferty and Quinn investigate (this is the third in the series involving these characters). I liked the story and there were twists and turns and mystery no doubt, but I didn’t connect with the characters.

Danni pauses outside one of the night clubs on Royal Street, drawn in by the music. A handsome saxophone player holds the audience in his sway with his exceptional music. He catches Danni's eye, and he seems to know her. Startled Danni hurries home, only to find that the saxophone player has followed her. His name is Tyler and he does indeed know Danni. They went to high school together. Tyler begs Danni for help. He believes one of their fellow classmates, Arnie, who was recently found dead of an apparent drug overdose, was murdered. Arnie had a special saxophone that is now in his possession, and Tyler thinks that someone is murdering musicians to find it. Can Danni and Quinn discover the truth behind the saxophone and catch another killer?
What I Liked:
*I like that you can jump right into this series at anytime and not feel lost. This is my second book in this series and even though I still haven't read the first book, I have had no trouble. Ms. Graham does an excellent job with recap, and she provides plenty of background information so the reader is never lost. If you are on the hunt for a good paranormal, murder mystery series, try these books.
*At the heart of the series are Quinn and Danni. Quinn is a private investigator who has seen his fair share of paranormal ongoings. Danni his partner and lover, is rather new to the whole paranormal scene. She inherited her father's shop not knowing that in the basement is a large collection of paranormal items, some cursed and even deadly. Together, Quinn and Danni help the local law enforcement solve crimes that delve into the paranormal. I like the way the two work together, and I enjoy their chemistry. With each and installment, the romance and partnership continues to grow and strengthen. This time around, it was all about boundaries and learning to trust the other's judgement. I am liking where the relationship is going, and I am eager to see it continue to grow.
*The mystery in this one is solid. There are of course, lots of suspects, motives and leads to follow up on that will keep you guessing until the final reveal. I have to admit, I had no idea who the murder was until the finale. My conjectures were wrong. I always like a mystery that keeps me guessing.
*I loved the New Orleans setting. Ms. Graham delivers the flavor of New Orleans with all of its unique shops, eccentric citizens and darker side perfectly. It was easy to settle in and feel like I was in New Orleans traversing the streets with the characters.
*This book has a rather large cast of characters, and sometimes that doesn't always work, but in this case it does. Everyone meshes together like one big happy family, and I liked that.
*The story opens with two gruesome murders, but after that, things tame down. The violence and creepiness in this book are pared back compared to the last book. I liked that this one was a bit more tame especially when it comes to blood and gore.
*The ending is fast and furious and it draws everything to a satisfactory close. There are no loose ends and no cliffhangers. With each book in this series, you get a complete story which enables you to read them in any order.
And The Not So Much:
*I was disappointed that this one didn't have any paranormal items or occurrences. When everything was said and done, there weren't any ghosts, demons or cursed or magical items. I have come to expect that in a Cafferty and Quinn book, so I was let down.
*Even though I appreciated there were only two murders, I felt that the action and suspense dwindled significantly as the book wore on. Not much happens to notch up the terror. The last book was creepy good, and this on in comparison is a fizzle.
*The mystery was good, but overall, this book was missing something. It lacked the creepy atmosphere, scary tension and paranormal flair. This ended up reading like a regular murder mystery. I wanted ghosts and curses!
The Dead Play On was a bit of a disappointment. While it featured a good mystery, I missed the paranormal. I thought the story lacked the creepy tension and scariness that I was expecting. It is worth reading for the characters and the setting. I am hoping next time out, Ms. Graham will get this series back to its paranormal roots.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.

The Dead Play On

A paranormal mystery set in New Orleans seems a sure bet. Alas, not so. Someone is murdering musicians in an effort to secure a certain saxophone. investigative duo Danni Cafferty and Michael Quinn are on the case. Cafferty's father collected haunted artifacts and the pair are not strangers to the supernatural. Unfortunately the story falls flat. It is boring. The dialogue is flat, the sex scenes gratuitous and the paranormal elements almost irrelevant. Even the charm of New Orleans is lost. Quinn and Cafferty demonstrate all the emotional maturity of seventh graders. The mystery was dull and overall this book was a bore.

Fast-paced mystery revolving around a saxophone that is thought to be magical. Believable characters, interesting dialogue and easy to follow story line.
"New Orleans is the Hollywood of the South, you might say. In Hollywood, every server is an actor. In New Orleans, every server is a musician.”
I may re-read this story and always look forward to new works by this author.

Most of the story consists of rather trite dialog between the characters. There is very little action for most of the book.
Almost no plot twists, and the plot is rather lame. The supernatural aspect is almost nonexistent.
The story is banal with no sense of thrill, no excitement or mystery.

Heather Graham writes a good story and this one keeps to that but it was truly lacking in surprises and heart thumping excitement. It went along at a steady pace keeping to the New Orleans party atmosphere and musicians. Someone is looking for a 'special' saxophone and killing anyone he thinks may have possession of it. It falls on Quinn and Danni and their group of friends to search out who is killing and why.

This story is a good mystery suspense with a small paranormal touch. It's the third book in Heather Graham's Cafferty & Quinn series that takes place in New Orleans. And it's just as good as the two previous stories. Lots of likable new & returning characters with twists and turns to the plots.

If the author is Heather Graham, you know that the book is going to be good. I have read everything she has wrote and been a fan for a lot of years. Her Cafferty and Quinn novels are all 5 star to me because you never know what is going to happen. Loved the way it started with the friend and the Sax. Keep up the good work because I'm really looking forward to the next one along with the Krewe series.

Having read Heather Graham books before, there were certain expectations that I held that were not met. I never really connected with the characters but I will say that jumping in at the 3rd book of the series may affect that perspective. The story was well-paced with the usual twists and turns that Ms. Graham is known for. Fans who have been following this series will no doubt be satisfied.

This was another great Cafferty and Quinn novel by Heather Graham. She takes me right into the story and I love the relationship between Quinn and Danni and the way they solve mysteries. I highly recommend this series.
Please RateThe Dead Play On (Cafferty & Quinn)
New Orleans is one my favorite cities to read about. It has this Old World kind of feeling mixed with the influences of Voodoo and Creole. Everything from the accents of the people to the traditions and rituals is dark and inky. Like you are seeing on part of what is really happening. It strikes me as a place of secrets and Heather Graham is sooooo good at bringing it to life. Whether it's the ghostly aspect of things or the mysterious aspect. Whether it's the music or the mayhem, Graham knows how to write this town.
In The Dead Play On, Graham delves deep into the musical history of the town. Drawing on the legends and stories passed down from musicians and players to give the reader a mystery that will captivate them. I loved the way Graham takes the reader into the Jazz atmosphere and makes them want to feel the music as much as listen to it. Arnie was a Jazz saxophone player and when he died, his spirit seems to reside in his horn. What an interesting idea to base a mystery on. I liked the fact that it had to do with musicians and the music of New Orleans. Very well done!
When Tyler, Arnie's best friend plays the sax given to him by Arnie's mother, something strange happens. Everyone thinks that Arnie died of a drug overdose but Tyler sees something completely different when he plays Arnie's horn. He sees the way he really died and he knows that this horn has something to do with the deaths of the other musicians in New Orleans. I loved the whole back story for this one. It was ingenious really. The killer looking for the horn almost driven by it to kill. I thought it was very well written, but most Heather Graham books are.
Tyler appeals to Cafferty and Quinn to help him prove to the authorities that Arnie's death was a murder. Cafferty and Quinn have some expertise at crimes that are little out of the ordinary. I love the way these two characters work together. They play off each other and they aren't afraid to say that a crime has a supernatural element to it. They believe Tyler and it's up to them to prove it. I like the fact that there are two investigators with this series. Reminds me a bit of Scully and Moulder. LOL! Love it!
Bottom Line:
Another amazing book from Heather Graham. She is one of my favorites. The paranormal elements don't beat the reader over the head, they are subtle and intriguing. I don't know that I believe in ghosts or spirits or the essence of a person being left in their musical instrument, but I do believe in Heather Graham's ability to make me wonder if maybe that could be possible. A great book, you won't want to miss!
