but another solidly entertaining Nesbo read. Story not as strong, and it lacked some of the richness of storylines of his fellow police colleagues - they all felt very underwritten in this one, mere bit parts for the plot, vs. active, rich characters as they had been in past novels. The plot was not as strong either, and the "redeemer" backstory was completely underdeveloped.
All and all, an ok beach read, but for Nesbo newcomers, start with the earlier books.

Harry Hole is such a great character and Nesbo is such a great writer. The path he/Harry takes to figuring out who the villain is, is wonderful. You do NOT figure it out yourself early in the book - like you do with some writers. You tuck yourself into your favorite reading chair and just go on the journey with Harry.

An intricate story, wth a few surprises and some difficult violent scene..I wish that Nesbo would write one book without Harry getting drunk. Now that would be the real surprise. It is too predictable now.and there is nothing worse in good novel than a predictable scene.

Since being introduced to Norway's Jo Nesbo by my daughter, I have read as many of his books as I could get. Even though this book is normally unavailable in the US, I was glad to find that the store partners with booksellers in the UK to bring more of his translated works to the US. This is one of the best in his cleverly plotted Detective Harry Hole series and I would recommend it. Hopefully more of his works will be translated into English. I was surprised to find that the shipping cost was reasonable and that transit time was only slightly longer than if it had been shipped from the states. (On a side note, my daughter states Nesbo's music is also to be recommended, but I'm not sure how he rates as a stockbroker or any of his other occupations.)

I love Harry Hole, this smart, intuitive character who has serious personal weaknesses that primarily affect his life,
but also often his job.
I was surprised to learn about the European version of the Salvation Army and its focus from the perspective of the leadership.
Great who-dunnit, great writing, great read.

I think Nesbo is a consumate thriller/psychological novel writer. I've read most of the Harry Hole mysteries and I think that Nesbo has breathed life and credibility into his reluctant detective. Nesbo's plots are complex, to say the least, and they keep you involved, which is the ultimate compliment to a writer. He also creates interesting and realistic antagonists or the individuals that Harry Hole has to track and bring to justice. In this case justice is a gray area, but that fits into the scheme that Nesbo has laid out. I have one giant beef with the novel, however. I don't mind being fooled by the author into believing that the people in the drama whom he describes are not what they appear to be, as this moves the plot along. But in this thriller, I think Nesbo did a rapid 180 degree turn in terms of his main character, making him into the villain in a few short stokes of his creative pen. I was put off by this close-to-the-end solution to the mystery. It would have been more credible if Nesbo had given the reader more salient hints as to the malevolence of this main character. It's as if he didn't know what to do and decided, OK, let's end it with this surprise twist. I still love the author's work, but in this case, I felt fooled by the ending.

I have just discovered the Harry Hole series of mysteries, I am totally hooked. Harry is a flawed police officer, with a tortured past that follows him where ever he goes, but never gets in the way of his solving the most convoluted of crimes. If loved the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, then this is right up your alley.

Just a truly excellent read. A twisty-turny plot peopled by interesting, intriguing characters. It is an intelligent police procedural. It's central character is a flawed but moral man with true depth. I heartily recommend you begin with THE BAT and read them all.

Jo Nesbo is such a talented writer that he makes it quite difficult to stay neutral regarding his flawed protagonist, Harry Hole. Just when I think I've figured out how Nesbo is plotting his story, he can so subtly change direction and
I am left wondering where he can possibly be leading his readers. Just in case there are more books in this series, I would love to see more of his little sis involved and a wise mothering girlfriend. Can't help but love poor Ol' Harry!

After seeing a very positive review of this book by Jo Nesbø, I had it sent to my Kindle.

The characters and unfolding story were gripping and I had trouble putting the book down.
Each chapter propelled me forward. An engaging mystery, for sure. Imagine my delight
when I discovered that there are more Harry Hole novels waiting.

A fascinating look at the innards of the Salvation Army. Also, Nesbo's use of the lenten theme to tell the story, tells us something of himself. As usual with Nesbo, the crimes are heinous and vicious and Hole is helpless in his personal life, but pulls it out in the end.

Nesbo brings you, Harry Hole's silent partner, back for a murder for hire who done it.

Nesbo does not disappoint as you ride along while Hole wraps up the case of the Prince and his latest murder mystery. A non stop thrill ride with darkness at every turn.

Just finished reading it. It's an incredibly well plotted story. There are several mysteries rolled into one, and several resolutions to several story arcs. This is a must read for fans of Jo Nesbo.

We are avid readers. I cannot critique every book we buy. Suffice it to say that the majority of the books we buy meet our criteria for what ever it is we expect from the particular one we have purchased. I don't remember there being any books we weren't satisfied with.

I started reading Jo Nesbo after finishing the Stieg Larsson trilogy. I was not disappointed. I find the protagonist, Harry Hole, a most interesting character, flawed to say the least but a great detective. All the characters are interesting and you can't help but wanting to know more. A page turner as are all of his Harry Hole novels.

The sixth novel in author Jo Nesbo's Inspector Harry Hole series, The Redeemer was only recently been released in the United States. Followed a couple months later by the first Harry book, The Bat, leaving just The Cockroaches, the second book, as the only entry in the series not available in the US.

The story begins with the rape of a fourteen-year-old girl at a Salvation Army summer camp in Norway and then fast forwards a dozen years to a bone-chillingly freezing winter in the capital city of Oslo. A professional hit man will soon appear on the scene; his target is one of the people from that summer camp. What happens next and why the hit has been ordered ... well, you're going to have to read the book to find out but trust me: it's a twisty, bumpy but ultimately highly enjoyable ride.

I've enjoyed this series from the first book I read, The Redbreast (Harry Hole No.3), and The Redeemer has everything I love in a Harry book: a complex, twisty mystery; thrills; the wonderful setting of Oslo; and an all-too-humanly flawed main character. Having read the books out of sequence, I was actually pleased to have the chance to spend time with some characters who had since passed away, and reveled in meeting new characters who are already in place in later books.

This is my 3rd "harry" novel and it is intricate, totally absorbing, and perfectly crafted. The balances between all the characters are finely tuned and the interrelationships work totally. Worth reading for its fine craftsmanship and people.

My early impressions were that this was turning into a sub par Nesbo/Hole tale. At the conclusion I can state that "The Redeemer" is my favorite book in the series. It is a most believable tale, jammed with a roller coaster of emotions and excitement. The interwoven manner in which Nesbo unravels the crime is a master work of criminal mystery genius.

Slow beginning, but then I got into the book. Good characters. A few unexpected plot twists. Overall a very good story and I like that no one is perfect, but not very judgemental about it all. Just good writing with good character development.

Why are these books being released out of order?. I thought it was Nesbo's latest in the series, and was dying to find out what happened to Harry after The Phantom. Nope. The beginning confused me, since it was written not only before The phantom , but before The Snowman. It is not Harry at his depths of despair, he is only just getting there.

Engaging protagonist - human enough to be real.

Well-crafted plot - convoluted, but, especially in retrospect, completely plausible.

Well-developed scene - a wonderful introduction to a part of the world I have yet to visit.

What more could a guy ask?

This was non-stop intensity. Jo Nesbo is a great writer, not just compared to Stieg Larsson. I can't get his books fast enough. I wish I could have read the books in order. I read The Snowman in June, so I knew of some of the deaths before I started this book. They still are stunning when they take place. I like the people who are in the story, they seem so real. They are imperfect, just like all of us.

This was one of my favorite Harry Hole detective stories that I have read to date (The Devil's Star was also very good). The plot was well disguised with a number of possible suspects that could have been behind the plot. The action moves along a good pace, making use of short chapters, which made it difficult to put the book down. The murder plot was also well thought out and I didn't pick up on it until the end. Like all Harry Hole novels, you have to pay attention to details.
