I recently viewed the Ronald Coleman movie, which didn't do a very good job following the story, but which ignited my desire to reread this wonderful fantasy. It's sort of a 'lost' classic -- forgotten by many readers, but well worth time it takes to fall into this wonderful and dramatic world Hilton imagined.

Always nice to read an old book with some history behind it. First book that was published in paper back edition. President Roosevelt referred to Shangri-La after the US bombed Japan for the first time in 1942. It is definitely a book that is timeless. Any age should be able to relate to this book, in our troubled times. Enjoy!

Very interesting book. Well written. Some of the passages were almost poetic. I selected the book primarily because coined the term Shangri-La. However, I would certainly recommend the book to others. I would also like to read this authors other famous book, Goodbye, Mr. chips.
emotional rollercoaster read you’ll devour in one sitting :: A chillingly clever psychological thriller with a stomach-flipping twist :: Message in a Bottle :: Along the Broken Road (The Roads to River Rock Book 1) :: LOST HORIZON (Marathi Edition)

A beautifully written story, so hypnotic I was indeed transported to a very different place and time than our crass modern world. My only possible criticism of this work, other than the inevitable sexism of the time (1933) is what seemed to me to be a ragged ending... which I refrain from discussing to avoid spoiling. Highly recommended.

Excellent read! This is a good classic that never gets tired. If you read it every few years like I do, you always find it refreshing and you get pulled into the lives of the characters. You won't go wrong with this purchase.

Lost Horizon is an adventure. Mr. Chips is a love story. I'm an Anglophile and within reason, if it includes the British, it's golden. Read before years ago, the re-read was an equally pleasant experience.

A little naive (perhaps even slightly adolescent) by modern standards, this book nevertheless captivates one's imagination with a compelling adventure story set in a time of impending worldwide disaster. The philosophical undertones elevate the story from a simple action tale to a charming and timeless exploration of the persistent conflict between savagery and civilization.

A wonderful modern classic! Neither of the two movies made from the book do it justice.
We need a Valley of the Blue Moon and a monastery like Shangri La to preserve all that is being lost in our post-modern world.

Loved it!!!! If you See the Early version of the movie it clsoely follows the book. The later movie version kind of deviates from the book a little but the storline is the same. Reading the book gave me a lot more information. A lot of this writer's book have turned into movies!!!

Lost Horizon is the perfect book for a slow day. Just sit outside, with a glass of tea and a fuzzy kitten in your lap. The novel is a slow moving, delightful story, with fully human characters set in a setting of fantasy. It's not a big book but it feels longer - because of the slow pace and detailed, colorful, descriptions.

Four people are kidnapped and taken to the valley of the Blue Moon, where they are offered, in a way, not just a better life but a chance to help in a larger than life project to help the future of mankind (if mankind has a future).

A must for ANY library.

The story line in the book Lost Horizon, although fiction is totally understandable that such a valley could exist in the Himalayan Mountains. The piece about eternal life is what makes the story so interesting as that is what a lot of people would want (not necessarily me). I have travelled to an area similar with the high snow capped mountain on either side of the pass and drop down into beautiful valleys. This book is a great read for ages from teens to adults. It is an easy book to read and put down and when you pick up again to follow on with the story line. I have read this book many times and still enjoy it every time I pick it up. Lost Horizon (Hardback)

Beautifully written story from another age. Of course it stretches the imagination, but that is a good thing because the slightly implausible opens the door to other dimensions. Perhaps there really is another horizon, we just need to look for it.

This book, though trapped in its time, still has echoes of agelessness - and lessons for all! Where is paradise? Is it somewhere on earth? Or is it inside? The great mystery is understanding ourselves and what we want out of life. Hilton does a good job of teasing that out of his tale.

Lost Horizon by James Hilton remains one of my favorite books of all time...for many years I traveled the world looking for Shangri-La, the wonderful
country Hugh Conway was lead to...the place where he belonged...I never found Shangri-La, the country, but I found that my Shangri-La was my home...for that is where I belong!!!

Love the fantasy of this book. Love the truly secluded area of the world in which it is set as well.
I like to recommend this book to young people who don't like to read. It usually changes their mind about reading.

Far more detail in the book, especially in the description of the methods for extending the longevity of the lamas and the efforts of Hugh Conway, the protagnist, to return to Shangri-La, than presented in Frank Capra's 1937 film.

After having seen the 1937 and 1973versions of Lost Horizon had I had to read the novel by James Hilton and I ha e to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was an intriguing mystery, fantasy and social comment of then and now.

Hopefully you can discuss this book with others. You can't help but think about all of the things we could have done in this country if we didn't spend so much creating things for the wars we seem to think we need to start. It would be nice if we could have more of the attitude that was taught by some in the book. I would have liked to see the movie based on this book but couldn't locate it.

Other than normal problems with the queens English and idioms it was a good read, but I found it lacking in content. Perhaps watching the I believe two movies and or remakes took it's toll. But, worth reading to have the author intrigue your imagination.

The condition of the book is just as described. I haven't had time to read it yet, and I've only seen the movie. It's a fanciful story about the land of Shangri-la. Where the people grow old at a much slower rate and can live into the hundreds. Really glad to have found it in and have it be in such good shape.

I like the author and particularly this story, which was made into a motion picture. I think this review suffices and your requirement for additional verbage only serves to discourage me from submitting future surveys.

I read this book years ago and have never forgotten it. When it appeared on my Kindle ad screen, I ordered it right away and was certainly not disappointed. It is still just the most magical book one could hope to read.

One of the best books ever written. Even though it's a fiction book, the ideas and way of living is very inspirational. If more people lived the way these people did this earth would have greater harmony, love and be a much more wonderful place to live. This is the key to bringing peace upon earth.

This is the classic story. It was the first paperback book, and now it is hardback.
This is a beautiful book, and I love the artwork in it.
It also has at the back --an afterword.
Also , I must say: With Winnie the Pooh, I never read the last chapter, because I wish to stay in that wonderful place, the 100 Acre Wood.
With Lost Horizon, I STAY THERE. Yes I have read the endings of books, but when I am taken to a wonderful, magical, place, I no longer leave.
Conway's young friend may leave Shangri-la --he doesn't belong there, but I DON'T HAVE TO GO WITH HIM and so, Conway remains to be safe and keep Shangri-la safe.
So I remain, and the mental atmosphere Shangri-la created in me, can grow.
For we do create our own atmosphere, do we not?
I always thought through the years that it was so sad that stories, poetry, music, even movies always had to have a negative to ruin the perfection created, or a political agenda. So I learned to mentally rewrite them to suit my life. I get so much more out of them. I gain Heaven on earth.

Every time I recommend this book to someone they thank me and agree with me that it is the best book they've ever read. It leaves everyone with a longing to find this place and I know it will do the same for you.
