Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual

I won't repeat the content and layout of this book, as it looks as though many others have already. All I would add, is that the presentation is clear, strong and congruent with the writing.

Although many of the ideas or contemplations aren't entirely separate from the physical work, it is still helpful to have them in two sections. THOUGHTS and ACTIONS to me works a bit like Musashi's classic, The Book of Five Rings, with its concepts grouped together.
Now, some of these ideas you may be familiar with from the podcast. Some you may have heard of in another context, and some you ALREADY KNOW. The beauty of having it all distilled into one sturdy, hardcover go-to book is the ease with which you can tie it all together and GO.
Dig this big time.

From the ritleni thought this book would be something different. Maybe tricks to help improve my dicipline or better my moral when beingndiciplined becomes difficult. But this text simply says "just do it". The book offers solid advice on things a former seal does to live his life to the fullest. But if you are looking for a self help book that will make you feel lovey dovey this is not the book for you. This book exposes the true nature of dicipline. It is a strength from the soul. A determinaion to never break andnsacrifice for what your body wants now. Let your soul amd will decide how you will live and master your body and habbits to help better ypur success. Thanks jocko!

This is the type of book or Life Manual that is always relevant. It is the cold, hard, truth. Without discipline in your life you will never be truly free. I cannot recommend this book enough! Be a warrior and live free.

I’m a 400lb desk jockey who hasn’t been active in athletics in 13 years (since high school wrestling). I’ve battled with weigh issues and over indulgent eating since 2008, when food filled the holes in my emotional life. Jocko has been a huge influence in changing that, but nothing like this book. I didn’t make it past page 10 before I realized I needed to commit now. That me putting off the things I wanted were due to my fear of how hard it would be, not because I didn’t know it was possible. And sure enough, after a week of Jiu Jitsu I’m getting up with my alarm instead of snoozing, hitting my macros every day, and following through on the little decisions that I would always put off out of laziness. Thanks Jocko. I’m looking forward to being free!

tldr: good book, buy it!

Navy Seals are very popular. The once silent professionals are putting out movies and memoirs on a scale I never could have imagined 20 years ago. They have developed such a following that some fanboys will 5-star any and everything they put out. If you have heard or seen Jacko on a podcast or interview, you know he does not need to trade on this reputation. His character is the product.

This book is full of no-nonsense advice starting with the idea that YOU control you. It is a self-help and motivational book that contains no nonsense and is very direct. Other similar books mollycoddle the audience with tidbits like "If you can't stop eating sugar it is not your fault. Your dopamine and serotonin..." Jacko puts it simply "If you are eating too much sugar STOP. Just stop." Granted he does not give a plan on how to wean off sugar. There is no 21 day secret plan. No secret squirrel recipe collection of substitutions one can make. JUST STOP. Take control and fix it. This is where his book shines. The burden is on you. Only you can change your life. As a non-millennial that works with millennials, I wish the participation-trophy/play-date/helicopter-parent generation had been exposed to such blunt truths.

Why only 4 stars? Nothing in the book is that groundbreaking. Much of this has been said before and, perhaps, said better. I opened it at 10 PM the day it was released and read it until midnight. I could not put it down. It was fun to read the book in Jacko's voice, but as I was reading I realized that you could easily read most of the sentences in Tony Robbins' voice just as easily. Or any motivational guru.

If you want the parts of the book that are uniquely Jacko there are some, but I recommend "Extreme Ownership" for that. It has more developed stories and sounds like it is a lot more of your liking. In that respect only, the relationship between EO and DEF is analogous to the relationship between a book and a TED talk.

This is a good book, despite my minor criticism. As much as I dogged on it, I woke up the next day and got out of bed without hitting a snooze button.

He nails it on the head as always. My only thinking was that most of the people reading this book already hear all of this from his podcast and subscribe to his philosophy and lifestyle already.

The book itself is well presented and quality publication. It will last forever and the materials are great.

The only reason for not 5 stars is that I think for the person who REALLY needs this book, its a little light on practical examples for day to day choices for those people to make.

Otherwise, its a great purchase and will be on my shelf and display forever, its exactly the message that results in progress and goals achieved.

Will buy more for friends as well as a gift.

Love the book. Love the clarity. Love the simplicity. Most achievers will already know many of these insights, but it's been put into a nice, readable, no BS context! Also enjoyed the nutritional and workout pieces, as I'm now 55 - still in pretty good shape - but want to keep getting better and having new challenges. Those workouts will definitely challenge me.

Was expecting more. Not so much a book but more like bullet points. I'm not a speed reader by any means (maybe a little quicker than average) but when I read a book from cover to cover in under an hour I'm a little bummed. The big font and fragments (see photos before u buy) are a big let down. Good content just very sparse with little elaboration. Lots of material could have been explored in greater depth. My only specific content issue was with the dietary plan (Paleo). It's a decent but largely overhyped plan if you have pounds to shed, but for an active warrior who engages in many of the same sports as the author carbohydrates are not the enemy but rather need to be utilized. There is simply no better fuel for the body for strength and power movements-It's all about moderation and planning. And no one "needs" to fast. Sorry, but it does nothing for you. Plenty of other ways to build self discipline.
Overall, I did enjoy the book, but not justifiable for the money frankly. More importantly I wish to thank the author for his service to our country.

Do it. Get this book. Take notes and take you time reading it. Detach and begin to apply it to your life. Jocko has a way of taking those seemingly hard questions and making them so simple and easy to answer. "Simple. Not Easy".
The book looks amazing and it feels really nice in your hands. I really like the black/dark grey page color with the signature white fon typet. This book IS Jocko through and through. I preordered my copy and will be ordering more copies for family, friends, and coworkers.

If you want to suck and be lazy your whole life, do not buy this book!!! If you want to eat donuts after sleeping in all day, do NOT buy this book!!! If your dream is to find a life philosophy that helps you to attain the highest level of slack with no accomplishments and no self improvement, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! If you hope to NEVER be able to defend yourself against an evil aggressor, I cannot stress enough, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! If you want to be one of those pussies who takes control of their life, suddenly gets fit, starts training in a practical martial art, and quits blaming everybody else for their problems, then go ahead, be a jerk, buy this book and “Get After It”. I’m an exercise fanatic myself and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, there’s two kinds of people in the world;

Those that are full of Excuses and those that know how to Execute.

This manual trains the reader to EXECUTE, which is the solution to coming up with Excuses not to exercise. Especially first thing in the morning.

Buy this book and live by the lessons provided and you’ll be the type that Executes!

This is just so hard to read on the paper. Why would you write on black/grey paper in white/light grey font in the worst indentation possible? Could have simply printed on normal paper - save some trees and save readers some money.

Most of the material in book is just general advice that you can get even without paying for a book.

This is not a book. It is a PowerPoint presentation that is sold as a book. It is filled with nothing but “hoorah” platitudes and simplistic observations. Don’t waste your money. Watch an old Tony Robbins rerun for the same value.

Jocko dishing out classic Jockoisms. The book is awesome for those of us who were already big fans of Jocko before he released it. For the un-initiated layman it may not have fulfilled expectations.
The training part was simply terrible. Anybody who has at least a few years of training under their belt and some creativity can design much better workouts themselves.
I'm glad that Jocko took the risk with this book though, and I expect him to continue being bold with more business ideas.

The first and foremost reason I like this book is that it is clean, no swearing at all. Jocko proves you can give wisdom without a single swear word. Dropping f bombs and other profanity does not affirm that someone is one bad dude. I can give this book to a child in confidence that they will not learn vulgar language from it. Also, I love the "simple but not easy" method. Shortcuts don't work, life is hard but not as hard as we think, and you just have to grind it out. Jocko, thank you for putting your thoughts and methods to paper. I'm sure that, just like in special forces training, only the select few that are hard and humble enough to actually listen and execute, will truly appreciate this book. Thank you.

I loved this book. I love pretty much anything Jocko comes out with and this book is no different. I’ve loved listening to the Jocko Podcast and Extreme Ownership but sometimes it’s hard to find those little “truth nuggets” that apply to daily life among all the war stories or leadership techniques. This book filled that void by giving me a quick go to for how Jocko recommends living life and “getting after it.” Reading a few pages to start each day will now be a ritual for me.

When I saw "Field Manual," I expected a set of principles and tactics surrounding how to be successful when making everyday decisions.

This isnt that. This is more like a combination of 50 different motivational posters. Don't get me wrong, there are great ideas there, and I love Jocko's stuff. It's just not what I was expecting.

I hate to say this is overproduced, but I do think a simpler design would have been more in line with the ideas of the book.

EDIT: After listening to the audio version, I can say that I LOVE the underlying material. Jocko has a way with words that works better in a simple format. This makes me think I would love a minimalist field manual.

Discipline truly does equal freedom. I'm glad I got this book, it's really motivating but beyond the motivation it's practical for when the reality of not being able to rely on motivation hits. In the book you get a glimpse of the perspective held by a warrior. Men were born to be warriors and this book is a great asset to build on your warrior mindset.

Disclosure: I'm not saying women can't be warriors, I just don't know if they were born to be warriors because I wasn't born a woman.

Discipline Equals Freedom is not a well written or intellectually stimulating book. Each page is basically a short cheesy platitude that Jocko lives his life by. I'm pretty sure I lost brain cells reading this book. Extreme Ownership was a good read, so I had high hopes.
Save your money and just listen to Work B**ch (Britney Spears), We Can't Stop (Miley Cyrus), and like 50% of Katy Perry songs for motivation as you go attack whatever it is you want to set out to do and don't make b**ch a** excuses, and eat Paleo <-- I've just summarized the entire book.

Very easy read, but provides great information. I didn't get much out of the second half of the book (workout manual), but the first half of the book (mindset) really made me stop and think about my approach to a lot of things. Great book!

Give the gift of discipline this holiday season with a book of Jocko's secrets, most of the time I see a doughnut I can't even call them that anymore as they only register in my mind as sugar coated lies now and when I call them that people that aren't troopers of the podcast just don't get it. I recommend reading this while sipping on some Jocko white tea, which is guaranteed to increase your deadlift to 8,000 pounds. If you don't like bettering your life then don't get this book.

It's a great little book about a Former Navy seal turned consults who talks about self discipline in a no mom-sense matter. He gives examples from his own life, outline a concrete plan for self discipline. Written in half prose half poem form, it's different than other things that I have seen, making quite interesting. I read the kindle edition on my iPhone, but I can imagine that the real-life edition would be a nice thing to have and come back to in the different stages of self discipline development.

In his new book, "Principles: Life and Work," Ray Dalio laments that more people should share their principles for others to read and consider. Jocko has done just that. This concise volume gets to the point and lays out key takeaways from Jocko's thoughts on life and how to live with self-discipline. It's a framework that provides the reader with an outline for how to improve one's life in multiple areas, and it's a great compliment to his podcast. Highly recommended.

Not worth it to be honest. Like others have said, it's just a collection of generic advice that you read on motivational memes. There is no actionable advice on how to get to action. I love Jocko's podcasts, but this book does not have anything of substance.

by reading it into a digital recorder and then I set it to play in a 6 hour loop while I slept. In the wee hours of the night, I dreamed that I was in a warehouse and was stacking up 300 lb pallets of Jocko's field manual into a veritable ziggurat of discipline. Then I woke up at 4:30 am and I was asleep on top of a giant stack of boxes in a publishing warehouse. The employees called the cops on me but I fought off the entire warehouse staff and the police after eating a can of spinach with some Jocko Joint Warfare caplets mixed into it.

I don't endorse scuffles with the police (but they'll never catch me! I used a pen name!) Perhaps my DIY audiobook caused too much getting after it. I'll stick to just reading it for now, and not before bedtime.

Five stars!

In a world filled with Precious Snowflakes and Social Justice Warriors, the wisdom of an actual Warrior is more timely than ever. This book is an ice cold blast of freedom that will motivate you to achieve great things if you take it to heart. Part One of the book is a modern interpretation of classical Stoic thought, driving home the teaching that one can never be truly free without exercising dominion over that which can actually be controlled: our thoughts, our attitudes and our ability to motivate ourselves. Although I read the first portion of the book in a single sitting, I plan on making each of the brief chapters a part of my daily routine. Moving from the abstract to the concrete, the author gives practical advice on fitness and nutrition with an aim towards optimizing the individual, whatever your starting point. I've already recommended this book to my kids. It is well-written in simple, powerful language, without fluff. Love it.

I'll start off by saying I am a fan of Jocko's podcast so I pre-ordered this book.
It falls significantly short of expectations. There is very little actual writing in the book and the writing that is in the book is very basic. It can be summed up with "Just do it."
While it is unique and artistic, it is more style than substance. There is less than an article's worth of reading within the entire book.
I will say that the only reason to buy the book is the workout in it. That isn't worth the money, though. There are better workouts available in other books.
Save your time and money.

Maybe I was expecting something different but I don’t think what this guy advocates is the key to a good life. Too much fighting and not enough flowing. Any self help book that devotes a few pages to weapons training and martial arts tells me that this guy lives in a different world than I do.

Being a Seal member makes the author a legitimate philosopher? Not in this case. It's a book written in 3rd grade English, poorly structured and not well planned. It's a collection of cliché and slogans that appear in those wannabe inspirational teenage sports movies that come out every single year for 12 year olds. Want to know how it would feel like to be yelled at by a highschool football coach with early onset dementia? Read this book. It'll dumb you down.

This is just a bunch of slogans like "JUST DO IT", "DON'T EAT SUGAR", or "EARLY MORNINGS AND LATE NIGHTS". The text is sparingly printed on each page which means this $12 Kindle book could be condensed into a $2 Kindle essay. He advocates the Paleo Diet which is pseudoscience nonsense and offers no sources to back up his claims. I was looking for techniques that he used, not basic ideas that any book on self-discipline would have.

I don’t know why people are into this so much, the book is trashy and gimmicky. It reads like a kids book and it could all be summed up in a 10 page pdf or a 30 second audio clip of jocko breathing heavily and telling me to “good” or “step.”

His default answer for everything is BJJ
Failing marriage? BJJ
Dumb? BJJ
Illiterate? BJJ
Herpes? BJJ

His workout and diet advice are common sense, don’t eat like a fat kid living in his mother’s basement and do your 3x8 squats. Do not waste your money on this book, it’s nothing like discipline equals freedom.

“People didn’t like my book? Good. It gives me a chance to write a better one next time.”

Very difficult to read on the Kindle with the black background, but that's not the reason for my one-star review. I pre-ordered this book and have been excited for it to arrive, but it really is so short that I don't know how the price can be justified. I was hoping for more substantial stories to support his guidance, but it's really just a group of thoughts that should have probably been a Kindle single priced at $1.99. The quality of his ideas are good and really embody the military mindset, but I was hoping for a lot more and am disappointed.

My opinion only; The statements made in the book, the advice given, is correct and good. I agree with it. But the ‘in your face military just suck it up and do it hyper motivation’ tone does not get through to most people, and it’s extremely tiresome to read. 90% of this book can be summed up as follows:

Wanna get stuff done and reach your goals? Just do it. Get up and make progress everyday, never procrastinate or quit.

There. I saved you all some money.

This is only my opinion after reading it. You’re entitled to your own.

The book is just a collection of short, simple "motivational" missives like "All you need is focus. Do it NOW." There isn't anything substantive in here. It is not much more than a drill sergeant barking stuff at you in book form. There are some workout routines in the back but nothing you couldn't find from a 5-minute google search.

The book is beautifully-bound and printed but I suspect that was just an effort to make it feel more substantive. Ultimately, it feels like a thinly-veiled money grab.

As some other reviewers have stated, this isn’t a field manual, or really a book for that matter. It’s just a compilation of maxims/advice that Jocko has already covered (in greater depth) on the podcast. The workouts are cool, but that wasn’t why I bought the book in the first place. I guess I was expecting something similar to “Extreme Ownership” (which I thought was an excellent book).

I will be returning this, but I will continue to support the podcast in other ways.

A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of the book Discipline Equals Freedom [Field Manual} by Jocko Willink:

This book was loaned to me by a former famous coach an National Football League team, who is fortunately in his eighty and still kicking. He attends daily Mass and I sometimes see him and talk to him about sundry topics including spiritual matters and the need for increased discipline in our everyday lives. Lending me this book which he only said I might find interesting as a retired FBI Agent.

The book was formatted differently as it was white text against dark or black background paper and I immediately was suspect as to whether I would find it comfortable to read. I overcame my usual desire for black on white and did find the book quite interesting and would recommend it it to others, especially those much younger than me.

Discipline is the key to life in all it's iterations whether psychological, physical or even spiritual. This book would have been greatly beneficial to me and my classmates at the FBI Academy some 40 plus years ago. For me it was a huge change in duty directions, i.e., from lawyer to FBI Agent in Quantico, Virginia.. The FBI Academy was a rude awakening for at 32 years of age and living a sedentary existence now subjected to the vigor's of great physical endeavors. There were times I wanted to quit but I “willed” myself to succeed, irrespective of the physical catch up I had to do in comparison to my younger colleagues, who were as young as 23 including a former officer from a Seal team an intimidating physical specimen.

The lessons I got from this book, I actually lived them throughout my struggles growing up in the Bronx NY, nineteen years of education in a very competitive area and now being thrown into the most demanding training I ever encountered at Quantico VA, and a two year stint in the Army at 19 years of age.

While older, and no longer capable of the martial approach to life, I am always aware of my surroundings and reconnoiter my possible reactions to danger in all my settings and seek out how I would confront first if the need arises. With increasing aging, I am more cautious but always planning.

This book, was for me a re-living of my struggles as a young man but for many it would be a primer on the self vs. life and I would encourage all young and older to read this book. For me at this age, now nearly 78 it was a motivational tool to review my life and assist me in my current quest toward spirituality and my final goal to be with my God.

I have known and worked with former Seals and they are, in many respects fine individuals who understand their sense of purpose. Their credo is to “never give-up”

While the book is not what I would consider a scholarly work, it has a most important message for people who lack and need the discipline to understand what freedom is.

I unhesitatingly recommend this book to those who truly need organization and direction in their life. I consequently give this book four stars out of five for reasons stated above.

If you're a fan of Jocko podcast, this book won't have a lot of surprises or new information...until you get to the workouts. The workouts are where the book FINALLY breaks down Jocko's workouts. I liked the simplicity of the explanation-nothing simple, just discipline. I would have preferred a summary in a few areas, but I think I got what I needed).

The book also reinforces what Jocko's been saying ever since he started, so if you need a reminder, this book will be that reminder.

I would say that this book isn't an ESSENTIAL read if you're a Jocko podcast fan, but definitely a supplement.

The main argument of this book is almost frustratingly simple. The way to build discipline is by doing things whether you want to do them or not. At first I found myself a little annoyed that I had paid for a book with such simple advice but as I read on Jocko expands on those ideas enough to be worth the read. It's also worth noting that Jocko tends to write the way he talks. If you're a fan you probably won't notice but this book could probably use some editing to make it read smoother for people who haven't heard the podcast.
If you have already read Extreme Ownership or you listen to Jocko's podcast there is not a ton of new content here but it's the kind of book where if you find one new idea that inspires you to act, it's worth the price of the book. If you haven't read Extreme Ownership and are looking for a book that's more focused on self help than business, Discipline Equals Freedom would be a good place to start.

This is a fantastic book. It's a quick and easy read which I believe is the intention. I think anyone that is giving this book a negative review is missing the entire point of the book and it's message. The point of the book is to help you draw inspiration in your life and to motivate you to find your own inner discipline. As Jacko says "there is no life hack". If you are looking for some miracle concept or some game changing "trick" you won't find one because that is not the point and there is no such thing when it comes to discipline. Discipline comes from within and this books encourages you to search within yourself. As a Black belt in martial arts and a former instructor this book brought me back to the days of pushing myself to my limits. I found this book at a critical time in my life when I needed to again find the discipline that I seemed to have lost for a brief time. It may sound corny or cliche but this book changed my life. It made me stop feeling sorry for myself and my situation and get up off the ground and DO something about it. Reading this book made me feel as though I was being encouraged by my former Master Instructors again to give life everything I've got and then a little more on top of that. I'm getting up early in the morning again and going at my day with a renewed sense of drive. I look at life situations with a different point of view again and don't let things get me down or deter me from my goals. What I like so much about this book is that you can read it from beginning to end in a short amount of time. I think that is perfect because it's something you can re-read over and over when you need that little reminder and boost of encouragement. I keep this book with me in my daily backpack. Just keeping it with me is a silent reminder that there is someone out there that is pushing themselves to their limit everyday so there is no excuse why I can't to. I would love to shake this mans hand and say "Thank you" because finding this book when I did truly saved my life.

Packed with powerful messages and tips from the man himself, Jocko Willink, this book is like a quick kick in the pants. It blends together in text form some of Jocko's soundbites from his podcast, as well as a few messages from Psychological Warfare and a good bit of new stuff. I was surprised by the practical tips that are near the end of the book, especially pertaining to physical training and diet. If you're not a Jocko fan, maybe pass this one up, but if you know the man and want a written compilation of how he thinks and works when training for life, you need this book.

This book is direct and thoughtful. I appreciated Jocko's commitment to his men and the way he thinks flexibly about situations to achieve the goal. Trite. It has moments of "kick you in the gut" inspiration, but there's nothing particularly deeper than what you'd get from a best friend yelling "JUST DO IT" in your face. Large print, tons of blank space on the page... just feels like a money-grab, honestly. Quick read. Not worth reading more than once. Good coffee table book.

This is a good and stylish reminder of things Jocko has said in his podcasts and videos. Do yourself a favor and watch a couple before reading this book. The one called “Good” is my fav. In reference to other reviews: I did not have any problems being able to read the words on the pages. Pick out a couple pages in the morning and read ‘em with your coffee.

It's a really nice book.it is full of wisdom to achieve ungoing development in all aspect of life.it teaches ruthless self analysis and to do more effectively.i feel any people from any walks of life will get valuable information on how to live life .Basically Jocko demands to be disciplined to enjoy all segments .
BELIEVE ME IT'S A VERY VERY GOOD BOOK FROM ONE OF THE MODERN DAY WARRIORS.
I am happy my time and money is well invested in this book .though the price is very cheap for precious knowledge it has.
Since i have followed jocko and babin(Extreme Ownership), and his podcasts with echo i have improved a lot.this is a book to keep.go for the hardcopy.from the book you can know how simplicity is implemented as the idea it contains within.I hope jocko will continue writting such nice books.

For anyone who listens to Jocko's podcast there isn't much new material. Having said that this book is a great summary of how Jocko approaches life and there is much to learn from his approach. This no nonsense philosophy can be summed up by the following maxims:
If you want be tougher, stronger, more disciplined etc then be tougher, stronger and more disciplined
Face your fears
Embrace difficulties

Amazing book. This is my daily motivation. I read it every morning to set my day on the right track. I originally got this book as a joke for my 7-year old and quite by accident. She loves it. It turns out my husband and I absolutely love it, too. You will feel inspired + motivated to pursue excellence every day you read this book.

I fell for the hype and bought this book, wish I had saved the money. Much respect to Mr. Willink for everything that he accomplished in his military career, but being a Navy Seal does not automatically endow someone with the ability to give good advice. The nutrition and fitness advice are opinion at best and not backed by current evidence-based practice or research. He readily dismisses anything that conflicts with his opinions (without bothering to credibly back up his assertions). Just listen to the author's appearance on the Tim Ferriss Show podcast and you will hear pretty much everything in the book (spoiler alert: it's not a lot of content). If you just want the author's opinions, give it a read.

Hardcore motivation! I have been a fan of Jocko's podcast and was looking forward to the book. I was not disappointed. There are no extreme revelations here, but sometimes you need a voice telling you the things you already knew. Thanks for the great book Jocko!!

When I saw some of the mixed reviews for this book I decided to pass. I was shopping at Target and was surprised to see the book available. I picked it up and skimmed through it. It looked like everything I was hoping it would be. I’m about 40 episodes into the Jocko Podcast. I guess I wasn’t expecting some new magical advice in this book because I’m still working through the concepts Jocko has discussed so far. There is so much content in the Podcasts. I love that I now have a format I can quickly refer to over and over again because I have to be constantly reminded. As for the white lettering on the black background? Not a problem for me.

Believe whatever you want about disciplined diets and living, blah, blah, blah. I was in the military for 10 yrs Active Duty and can tell you that the majority of dudes I was around smoked like chimney's, drank like fish, downed energy drinks like it was water, and ate junk food on a daily basis, yet were able to pass their PT test every time with flying colors, and do 12-20 mile road marches within the allotted time just fine. I also know for a fact that Navy Seals party just as much as anyone else and abuse their bodies no different than anyone else, so please spare me the b.s Jocko is a good guy I have no doubt, but he is trying to sell an idea to people who are ignorant about how things really are in the military. Adultery and promiscuity are norms, as well as STD's and DUI's. Those in the Special Operations community would be lying through their #&# if they tried to deny this. Anyone who has served on Active Duty regardless of which branch knows this. Deployments are where some of the worst of these behaviors happen. Yet, they come home wrapped in the flag and everyone is in awe of their sacrifices. Not here to question that nor to diminish one's service, but give me a freaking break Jocko, you know as well as anyone that your dudes were banging chicks as often as they could and getting drunk whenever possible, and it was guys like you who bailed their butts out of trouble and covered for them to keep them from ruining their careers. This book is nothing more than a bunch of b.s plain and simple. No one dies from eating a donut or a slab of pizza.if they just do so in moderation. When does one get to live a little? Not everyone is cut out to be a Navy Seal which is why only few make it. But I can tell you that I served with a lot of studs too and they were hardly shining examples of health and wellness. They simply had youth and vigor on their side. Jocko is just trying to make a quick buck off the backs of people who are in awe of the whole Navy Seal aura. Reality is though there are more lazy minded joes and jane's who only work out to pass their PT test not to be Mr or Ms fitness and prefer a cigarette and a case of beer instead.

This is the second book that I have read by Jocko. It's a swift kick in the pants to get up and do what you want to get done. Quit making excuses and just do it. I love Jocko's no BS attitude and let's get it done. Work hard. Play hard. Do what you want to do and don't do the stuff you don't want to do.

Good book. Although more of daily motivation or devotional to a way of living and doing that is just a better way than most currently do. Book has great information but will not blow your mind away with the information more about the discipline to do those things.

Wife rolled her eyes when I said a I was getting this Navy Seal's book, then she yelled "amen" after I read the section on "sugarcoated lies." Love the simple design. Easy to read just one page and digest it before a morning workout. Thanks Jocko!

Short, actionable stories that inspire you to get up off your butt and do some dirty work!

I like this book for my collection because you don't have to read it from cover to cover. Just open it up, land on a page, and get that swift kick you need to get started on your daily goals.

If you're an adult and have followed Jocko's podcasts and previous writing, you won't find anything new here. The sweet spot for this book would be kids in their early high school years needing a jolt of motivation or maybe the floundering twenty-something living in his parents basement. Just ordered a copy for my high school library.

Incredibly binding to the core of who you are. Only pansies would give this less than a 5. Sorry, but it's true. If you desire a life of moderate, easy, or normal, don't buy this. You'll be disappointed.
