My father used to read books by Daphine du Maurier, and I read them too. I happened to remember that, so looked up books by her and found several. "My Cousin Rachel" was an interesting book about those early days when people lived very formally. I was happy to find those books again.

A gripping tale of intrigue through the eyes of a man clueless as to social interaction between sexes. Compelling characters and a lyrical portrait of Cornwall in England. Enchanting Rachel and clueless Phillip make for a dangerous brew.

Classic du Maurier.. I never tire of reading her works and entering into her world(s) of gothic mystery and storylines. Regardless of what era she is writing about, she can take a mundane situation and weave a story that keeps you riveted to the page
Jamaica Inn (VMC) by Daphne Du Maurier (2003-03-06) :: Frenchman's Creek :: Tales from Shakespeare (Penguin Classics) :: The Troll Garden / O Pioneers! / The Song of the Lark / My Antonia / One of Ours (Library of America) :: Jamaica Inn

If you enjoyed her classic, Rachel, then this book is a must. Once again Daphne du Maurier succeeds in evoking the mystery and charm of Cornwall by setting her intriguing characters and rivetting story plots in this beautiful area.

Warning: this is the abridged version! Nowhere does it tell you that but this is an oversized, large print version of the book and only about 100 pages. It's still a very good story. I haven't read the original version, so I can't compare it, but since this one is so short, it's very predictable. It's still well written and is a complete story, but I'm guessing you miss a lot of the flavor of the original novel. I don't know why the store doesn't mention this is heavily abridged, but it is.

As for the story itself, it's excellent. It reminds me of a character reversal with Rebecca. Instead of Mrs. De Winter being the naive female coming into an established household, the story is told from the man's point of view (I forget his name) while his cousin Rachel infiltrates his house. Rachel is very much like Rebecca while the man of the house is like Mrs. De Winter. It's a great book but I STRONGLY recommend getting the original and not this abridged version.

It is my favorite author, thank you for that wonderful book. I love the stories Daphne Du Maurier had written. It's very emotional and inspirational reading. I love to read it and re-read it more times.

this is an 80 page (in large print) simplistic abridgement of the original novel, written perhaps for young teenagers. it is not mentioned in the description that this is what you are buying. it has no copyright or publication information in it; it looks like someone just wrote an 80 page summary of a 350 page book, thus eliminating every nuance, description, depth of characters-- it's ridiculously simplistic. i got my money back from the store.

DuMaurier's book, "Rebecca", is a must read. However, DuMaurier deserves be known for more than this one book alone. "My Cousin Rachel" is about a young man in England who cares for the uncle who has raised him. However, his uncle departs on a vacation to Italy and falls in love with and marries "Rachel." Without giving too much away, let it be said that our young gentleman has his concerns in regard to his uncle and this Rachel. But once he meets Rachel, he falls under her spell, as well.

It's a very fun book to do for a book club because you will have friends who believe Rachel's story and those who do not. It's also enjoyable to ask whether this story could be modernized and still ring true.

DuMaurier is an excellent storyteller. She utilizes very few characters and as a reader, you feel as though you are observing all which is taking place in the story. She's always excellent at making the setting become a real part of the story.

Again, even though this book does not equal "Rebecca" by any stretch of the imagination, it deserves to be read and will be remembered.

Complete disappointment. This is not the real book at all, but is a sort of poorly done short (85 page) abridgment. I feel I was tricked since the description says the book has more than 300 pages and I believed I was getting Ms. DuMaurier's unabridged work. Very unhappy!!
