Review:Mediocre biographies are medicore for the same reason that boring histories are boring: they list facts and dates while providing little context that brings the subject to life. But good biographies bring the emotion, the context, the why behind the what, that brings you into intimate contact with a vibrant human life. Ron Power's Mark Twain is of the "good biography" sort. Indeed, it proved far more fascinating and readable than I had reason to suspect it would be when I bought it on a lark. Ma... Read more
Review:EATERS OF THE DEAD is an interesting historical novel that takes place in 922 A.D., during the time of the Vikings. Michael Crichton uses this time period to essentially retell the story of BEOWULF, which he felt was too boring and tedious for modern audiences. The story involves a small band of Vikings that journey northward to attack a group of monsters (whose true identity is revealed at the end of the book).
This book is actually pretty interesting, but it's told in rather dry, old-... Read more
Review:Brilliantly witty and erudite, at home in English and French, knowledgeable in art and literature, Alain de Botton mixes genres to pull out lessons on life and love from Proust's works, while also discussing Chardin and Ruskin and numerous other artists and writers, in addition to discussing Proust's long sentences in a picturesque manner that all really does make us think about our own lives, behavior, and relationships. Review:I thought this book was amazing. The author gives you a lot of random information during the beginning half of the novel, but once
you have reached towards the end of the book all of this information falls into place. I loved the ending. It was terrific. The last sentence of the novel even somes up the whole book, and really connects to the very beginning of the novel. I loved this book so much that if I was introduced to it out of my english class
I would still have read it. Read more
Review:As a parent I absolutely loved this book and will cherish its wisdom in the event of a zombie crisis so I can keep my kids safe, lol. I plan to stock up on legos and jacks to sprinkle around the floor so they really can be used as a defense mechanism but I draw the line at getting a minivan. I have REFUSED for years to be a Minivan Mom, I’ll stick to my SUV.
It really is very tongue in cheek while providing survival tips but it somehow still came off as a good parenting book which I didn’... Read more
Review:I thought it was going to be another Jack Reacher novel. What it is is a whole collection of things you already know about Jack Reacher rolled into one. Even excerpts of things he's said in prior novels. And I had to pay $9.99 to,see it. I would really like my money back. Very misleading Read more
Review:Wonderful. I've come across multiple Poe collections before and usually something is edited out of them, and stories would be missing. This is a great, complete book. Dark and mysterious, with great sense of humour, and always my favourite. Read more
Review:Short sweet and to the point. Different to the length found in other epics but still an epic nonetheless. If you want a brief overview of the story listen to iron maidens song by the same name, though be prepared to listen for around 17 minutes. Read more
