The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs - A New History of a Lost World
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs - A New History of a Lost World

Review:It is really a matter of expectation for me. The BBC series "Walking With Dinosaurs" was really fascinating to me many years ago. This book purports to bring us up to date on the massive amount of recent research. It starts out slow and very egocentric, written more to glorify the recent generation of scientists. I'm sorry, but the eccentric habits of hippie-nerd paleontologists as they go about their work just aren't that interesting. What I wanted was to learn in some depth how the field ... Read more

and What It Is Not (Dover Books on Biology) - What It Is
and What It Is Not (Dover Books on Biology) - What It Is

Review:This is a book all nurses should read. It was written in the 1800's, but the basic nursing concepts have not changed. Because it was written in a different era, the language can be a bit cumbersome. I had to reread some passages to gain full comprehension. Again, even though this was written long ago, the basic concepts are very beneficial to any one on the medical profession. Read more

A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart
A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart

Review:This is a very moving book that makes you realize that it is not money that buys you happiness but service and compassion to your fellow human beings. As a doctor, we all start out for altruistic reasons but the demands and stresses of practicing medicine in today's world can make you lose some of that feeling. I find that now that I am retired and seeing poor patients for free, I feel more connected to the reason I went into medicine in the first place and am enjoying it more.

The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss
The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss

Review:The images in this book are very good. If you buy this for book solely for that purpose it is worth it.

However if you actually want to READ it, buyer be warned! The incessant need for the author and contributors to continue to make the same statements... "mankind is killing the planet" gets very tiresome.

Do these people not realize that the writing of this book uses paper(even if recycled it is still a limited resource that could be used elsewhere). Do they not see that the del... Read more

Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup - Bad Blood
Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup - Bad Blood

Review:One of the best nonfiction books I've ever read. Carreyrou does a good job of explaining the science behind blood testing/assays in layman's terms. Parts of this book read like fiction because of how unbelievable the (true) story became. Read more

Why Cats Do What They Do--and How to Get Them to Do What You Want
Why Cats Do What They Do--and How to Get Them to Do What You Want

Review:Very useful book if you have problems with cats. Excellent insights into cat behavior and good and practical suggestions for ways to deal with it. I agree with other reviewers that the last half of the book is the best part, but I understand why the author includes the information in the first part of the book. Read more

The Mind's Eye
The Mind's Eye

Review:I hesitated between three and four stars, but decided to give it four. I have read everything Oliver Sacks has ever written, and _Seeing Voices_ is one of my favorite books. However, I found this book less engaging than nearly all of his previous works. I enjoyed the new case studies, but I felt somehow that I had already read the same information in his previous books. The exception to this is his first-person narrative of his own experience with his changing sight, which was a somewhat jarring... Read more

A Plant's-Eye View of the World - The Botany of Desire
A Plant's-Eye View of the World - The Botany of Desire

Review:The information contained in the "apple" section is alone worth the price of this book. The section is as much a history of westward expansion, homesteading, and early American life as it is about why the apple has flourished in our country. The author develops a wonderful new perspective on the human relationship with the plants of this book. I enjoyed reading it. Read more
