Review:In the author's forward to this edition Feist refers to his desire to write a "ripping yarn." Using his own assessment, he has succeeded. This episodic tale rarely tarries, leaping along from one event to the next, often jumping years ahead in order to avoid any lapse in action. The end result, while entertaining, tends toward caricaturization and the conventional. Feist's players are rather one dimensional and conform to stereotypes long ago established in the genre. And the heroes of... Read more
Review:I call this a "typical" epic fantasy because it didn't knock my socks off with any kind of originality as far as races, magic, plot, etc.
It was somewhat refreshing at first to find that the "bad guys" of the book were another race of humans rather than some omnipotent unknown evil menace with hideous henchmen as its disposal. Oh, wait, then you read books 2 - 4 of the series and find out it's actually the same old thing.
You have the usual elves, dwarves, giants, trolls, goblins, etc. Not... Read more
Review:I really enjoyed this book. Michie writes with authority on Tibetan Buddism and the life of the monks there with the tragic background of the Chinese takeover of Tibet. An engrossing story line with unexpected links. Read more
Review:It became so clear that Lisa Maxwell is a skilled writer. She wove a tremendous story with plenty of twists to keep me turning the pages. She made me care about what happened to the characters, leaped through the time continuum, and provided a bit of humor along the way. The ending didn't surprise me, but it was fulfilling nonetheless. At times, I felt lost as she switched settings/characters often then tied it all back together eventually. My ONLY criticism was the entire read didn't feel like ... Read more
Review:I have a fond spot for this book. It can be dry in spots and I'm always left wishing that he said more about his own works (although I also respect him for not taking the opportunity to tout his own works). One of the only things I disagree with is the inclusion of 'The House Next Door'. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent story but I wouldn't put it up there with the others mentioned by any means.
This edition comes with a new foreword about more recent movies but I really can't help wishing ... Read more
Review:More painful to get through than I thought it would be.
There's nothing inherently wrong with this novel. In fact, it's very honest about what it is: a supernatural coming of age about a twelve year old boy trying to save his mother from a mysterious form of cancer. It would've been great if I had been... what? 21 years old? But I'm a whopping 35 and living in 2017, and I'm saddened to tell you: The Talisman didn't age all that well.
It's impossible to read this book earnestly in t... Read more
Review:The Grimnoir universe is by far my favorite from Larry Correia yet. The previous two books were just fantastic. I love the characters, the setting, the limitations of the powers, and the legitimate evil of the bad guys.
Warbound does provide conclusion to the series, but it pulls an ex machina that doesn't sit well with the rest of the story. ***Spoilers*** In particular, the series started with a character that did things that shouldn't have been possible, and the story hinted that there... Read more
Review:Way to go John Ringo!! If I'm being entirely honest, i liked this book more than any of LC's series since the first MHI. i like a series that has a central character. i like to watch that character grow and learn as time and trauma dictate. this is a really fun and interesting start, i hope chad stays alive long enough to develop. i mean we all know he dies in the end, but then, don't we all? Review:A few stories - Ringo is a standout - were great fun, and truly in the wild, crazy, happy spirit of Monster Hunters books written by both Correia and Ringo. There were some interesting ideas presented in the stories as well, and there was a good quantity of original, imaginative work. But most of the stories don't ring 'true' to the spirit of MH. Characterizations of some of the main protagonists from the original stories were especially unconvincing.
In the end, I was left unsatisfied. Inste... Read more
Review:I really enjoyed reading this installment of the Monster Hunter series. It was nice to get to understand the background of Agent Franks and as usual Larry Correia did a great job detailing everything. Read more
