Notes from Underground (Vintage Classics)
Notes from Underground (Vintage Classics)

Review:With these opening lines, the ultimate outsider novel was born almost 140 years ago. Despite the number of years since its publication, it has lost none of its meaning, insight, or social value as a work of art. If anything, it has gained popularity and standing due to the many divergent and contentious worldviews of so many outsiders from all walks of life today. Few people realize that Ralph Ellison's classic 'Invisible Man' owes more than just passing gratitude for inspiration. Dostoevsky, si... Read more

The Idiot
The Idiot

Review:I was on the NR train with a college junior who was a former Bible study student of mine in high school. We were on our way to the Carnegie Deli when I asked how his fellow classmates were doing. It was then that he told me the news. "Didn't you hear?" he said. "--- was recently in a porn video." When I heard this, I said that it was like hearing that a young child I knew had been molested. He responded incredulously, "When I heard about it, I laughed."

I might have laughed as well. The w... Read more

The Idiot (Wordsworth Classics)
The Idiot (Wordsworth Classics)

Review:This was abridged. I couldn't find that information before it was ordered. It's only on the back of the CD in small print. That's bad enough. To abridge it in the first place, however, is stupid. senseless. ignorant and shows that no one involved in the production has any idea of either the worth or the content of what they "repackaged" for profit. It's like releasing a recording of a Beethoven Symphony without 'cellos. It would be a lie to call such a recording the symphony. It's false advertis... Read more

The Almost Moon
The Almost Moon

Review:It's quite rare that I don't finish a book I start but I found Alice Sebold's "The Almost Moon" so horribly depressing and totally warped that I closed it about 1/3 of the way through and gave up. Perhaps some of it hits too close to home for comfort, and I can certainly relate to some of the emotions and feelings, but her protagonist acts them out and they offend and frighten me. Read more

Mitosis: A Reckoners Story (The Reckoners)
Mitosis: A Reckoners Story (The Reckoners)

Review:Yeah, yeah, I know, it's a short story. I knew that when I bought it. Still, I would've enjoyed another two or three chapters -- and perhaps some further development of the Mitosis character (although it's quite possible we could be seeing that in the sequel to Steelheart).

Bottom line, the Reckoners stories are great light reading from a very talented writer. Read more

Rules of the Game: A Stardust, Texas Novel
Rules of the Game: A Stardust, Texas Novel

Review:Lori Wilde hits a home run with Rules of the Game! Jodi and Jake are two people that suffer from trauma from their pasts. Jake lost his wife, and Jodi was jilted at the alter. Jodi does not want to relinquish control, Jake is Afraid of love, both are afraid of losing something important. The story is rather funny as Jodi crashes a wedding where she first meets Jake, who turns out to be the best man in her sisters upcoming wedding. Jodi surrenders to a hot weekend with Jake, never thinking she'll... Read more

Vega: Book Four of The Stardust Series
Vega: Book Four of The Stardust Series

Review:I thought the other books in this series were fun....just enough romance and heat without being dirty, fun/compelling storyline. This one suddenly switched to descriptive make out and sex scenes with a tiny bit of plot in between and a completely aggravating and unbelievable relationship(s) happening. It's like they gave up on an interesting plot in exchange for sex. I hope there weren't too many teenagers that has been reading this series that are now exposed to completely unreal, immoral relat... Read more

A Touch of Stardust
A Touch of Stardust

Review:A Touch of Stardust blends fact and fiction, combining newly imagined original characters with unforgettable icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age, as Kate Alcott explores the topsy-turvy world of cinematic glamour and its impact on human nature. Julie Crawford, Alcott’s fictitious protagonist, is a bright-eyed, sensible girl from Fort Wayne, Indiana; a graduate of Smith College, she’s determined to pursue her dream of writing screenplays, walking in the footsteps of her hero, Francis Marion. When she... Read more
