The Door into Summer
The Door into Summer

Review:There are many aspects to this book that is not meant to be taken seriously. Except for one thing: Heinlein, I think, knew a lot about cats. I finally got my first cat six years ago and she is not quite like Petronius the Arbiter, Pete for short, in the book. Since I got her from a shelter, she had to be neutered, an absolute no-no for Pete (and, perhaps, Heinlein's own cats).

I enjoyed all the passages where Pete is present and active the most. OK, time travel back and forth twice (not e... Read more

Citizen of the Galaxy (Heinlein's Juveniles Book 11)

Review:What can I say.
I've loved this book since high school when I first read it.
I really is a good look at the society we live in and how many thing that seem like they're disparate are really all part of a much larger web.
A good read for anyone that like science fiction or insight into how the world operates. Read more

Tunnel in the Sky (Heinlein's Juveniles Book 9)
Tunnel in the Sky (Heinlein's Juveniles Book 9)

Review:I was a big fan of reading in my youth in the 70's, and Robert Heinlein's "adolescent" books were a wonderful segue into more serious stuff as I grew older.
Tunnel in the Sky, Have Spacesuit, Will Travel and Starship Troopers are all excellent books and would serve any younger reader well. Read more

Will Travel (Heinlein's Juveniles Book 12) - Have Space Suit

Review:Although dated (and what isn't dated today), this is another great book by Heinlein. I remember finding this book in the school library when I was a kid and never forgot reading it from cover to cover. Now I am sharing it with my kids. Great adventure! Read more

Eisenhower in War and Peace
Eisenhower in War and Peace

Review:I may be a bit biased as Jean Ed was a high school classmate -- president and most likely to succeed. I agree with George Will that Jean Ed Smith is currently the very best historical novelest. I have military background and was attending Penn State when Dwight was President and his brother, Milton, was President of Penn State. The book is extremely well researched. Read more

The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914
The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914

Review:Took me a long time to get through the book. Relationships and foreign names were hard to follow. I do like non-fiction books. I
enjoyed the historical importance of it. It was easy to draw similarities in today's world, unfortunately. Read more

About Face: The Odyssey of an American Warrior
About Face: The Odyssey of an American Warrior

Review:I read this book to find out more of the history of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Actually, it turned out to be a well-written self-promotion book about Hackworth himself. I saw the author on TV, but as I read it I could only picture Oliver North. Hackworth proves he is a common man and a high school drop out by using a lot of written profanity.

He later attended West Point after proving himself in battle as an enlisted man. One learns lots of Army acronyms, and that the author conside... Read more

A True Story of U.S. Marines in Combat - The Last Stand of Fox Company
A True Story of U.S. Marines in Combat - The Last Stand of Fox Company

Review:Fantastic story about a Marine company which withstood attack after attack from the Chinese Army in Korea. They were greatly outnumbered and suffering from unimaginable cold weather yet held on to a vital passage point for the Marines and Army units to escape from the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. Very well written and almost places you on the battlefield with Fox Company; a place I would never want to be in my worst nightmares. Semper Fi Marines. You excelled at adding another brick i... and the Battle of the Little Bighorn - Sitting Bull

Review:Review of Philbrick’s "The last stand" by Paul F. Ross

Most of us, asked to recall “Custer’s last stand” based on what we remember from our schooldays’ history, would say that it was an event in which George Armstrong Custer and the US Army soldiers he commanded fought Sitting Bull and his Indians on the Little Bighorn River in Montana and were wiped out … no survivors. Nathaniel Philbrick uses bibliographic sources listed on 28 pages and notes presented on 93 pages that link those sour... Read more

Storm of Steel: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
Storm of Steel: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

Review:Since its publication in 1920, Storm of Steel, written by Ernst Junger, has been surrounded by controversy. Many have misunderstood Junger and accused him of attempting to glorify war. I saw no evidence of the glorification of war in his book. Junger has obviously been desensitized to violence does not show much emotion to the atrocities of war that he witnesses. However, I did see evidence of compassion and a longing for the life that he had before the war.
I finished this book in less than... Read more
