Review:Fair but not great. Not much interpretation or detailed examination of the important issues of the period. Superficial research based primarily on secondary sources. Author often fails to explain quotes, leaving meanings obscure. Read more
Review:Packed with interest, intrigue, sensitivity, cruel history.....goodness, I couldn't put down those 600 pages for all of a week until I reached
the very last sentence. I highly recommend this book for it brought out so many historical figures long forgotten but so much a part of our
lifetime. I loved it! Read more
Review:'Citizens' is written in a narrative style that gives life to a fascinating period in human history. The detailed descriptions of contemporary issues in art, literature and politics is a new feature in a description of the French Revolution.
In what is a novel approach to the history of the Revolution, Simon Schama devotes almost half of his work to a description of the Ancien Regime, including a very vivid glimpse into the lives of the Peers of the kingdom. By doing this his desciption... Read more
Review:I thought the book was inspirational but in no way is this non- fiction. I was very disappointed that it is sold as a true story. I am not an expert but common sense tells me that no one could accomplish this the way it was presented. This is only my opinion and does not detract from the way it was written. I enjoyed reading it. Read more
Review:This book was very informative and easy to understand. There are many opinions about The Basques and their history and I felt this author was able to explain in a straight forward manner without glorifying the Basque or skirting around unpopular moments in history. Read more
Review:I purchased this book after talking to someone at a car dealership!! She had told me about it and I thought it sounded interesting. It was better than I had thought it would be. This is a first hand account from a surviver. Some of the areas were glossed over but enough detail was given to get a good picture of what was happening and what these people lived through. Review:This book will teach you who were the real heroes of World War II. I did not know how much the people of Poland contributed to the defeat of the Nazis and the truth will come out. Bravo to the brave men and women of Poland who saved democracy in Europe! A must read to all who love history. Read more
Review:Roland Huntford's The Last Place on Earth (Scott and Amundsen's Race to the South Pole), re-published as part of the Modern Library Exploration Series after its original publication in the 1970s, is the precursor to the whole spate of recent books on Arctic explorations, both North and South, to the delight of many readers, myself hungrily among them. The author tells an exciting story and was able to effectively destroy the grand heroic myth of Scott and his run for the South Pole while resurr... Read more

Review:Great little phrase book -- endless phrases for all sorts of situations. For our 5-day stay in Florence, we didn't need too much Italian, but I still recommend this book if you're going for a visit, no matter how short or long. Read more
