Review:I found the author had so much footnoted that I wasn't sure there was any new points he actually made. So difficult to get through; I bought if because it was a selection for my local book club. I do not agree with the author's position on the way the Internet has impacted lives and thinking (negatively). Read more
Review:Artificial Intelligence is analyzed here with the eye of the science.
Nobody knows exactly how and when this major iteration of life will happen, but everybody should be aware that it is going to happen.
Max Tegmark's work is a great contribution in this direction. Read more

Review:"An Introduction to Algorithms", a big book, is worthwhile the time. But, I must admit to being 1/4 through iTunes U MIT course "6-046J: Introduction to Algorithms". The textbook feedback is seriously helpful, but I could not manage without the lectures. For what it is worth, my life's course has been the trash-heap quality programming must immediately face, and I've started the course to try to put into some perspective what my efforts have meant over the years, if now largely obsolete. Review:This book is great! Nothing less, nothing more. I would recommend this book to all CS students and to all kind of programmers (novice, advanced, pro). Ok, you will need very strong math background, or you will have to learn math - but it is worth it!
Just don't take this book, read it from cover to cover and expect to become master of programming. You will learn how to write great algorithms, how they work and how to use it (in real life situations), but still you will need practice!

Some have complained about it's lack of technical detail; mind you, it's a conceptual book and should not be read for technical know-how but more for understanding the spirit of the machine learning researcher and what the big picture is all about. Read more
Review:Very interesting perspective and well written. I've read Kurzweil and was always a little concerned with his seemingly over optimistic perspective regarding AI. Barrat does a great job explaining the dangers of AI both technologically and philosophically. His narrative is also much easier to read than other books on the subject.
The only thing I would critique is that, while his views are rationally supported and thorough, I would have liked to have seen more specific ideas about what can be ... Read more
