Review:This book is breathtaking. I just finished it about five minutes ago and am having a hard time organizing my thoughts because this book is just so incredible on so many levels. The prose, for starters. Toe-curlingly good. I caught my breath a few times. The characters are well-drawn and quirky in the best possible way and just so living and breathing and aching that you can't help but feel for them. The story is incredibly original, the magic makes me feel like I'm a little kid again swimming ar... Read more
Review:4.5 stars
The book starts out very disconnected. There is a lot to take in. You have to spend some time with the book to figuring things out. It helps to know a little about the book is prior to delving in: it’s a first-person account of a teenage boy’s descent into mental illness. In the first few chapters, you will find that Caden is experiencing hallucinations and is having a difficult time discerning between those and reality.
The chapters seem so incohesive but the effect ... Read more
Review:I bought this book as a follow-up to reading "Rapture Practice." RP was a memoir, based on a true story. This work is fiction, but the characters seemed so real to me. Rafe is gay, with accepting parents and friends and in a supportive school, but he just wanted to escape being "the gay kid," so he changed schools and hid his sexuality. In the end, he comes to terms with being being "the gay kid", with being who he is. There is joy, and there is angst.
This is classified as a Young Adult nove... Read more
Review:Pros: Mexican culture, themes of family, coming to terms with who you are, inner beauty
Cons: Passive, unlikable protagonist who complains all the time, speaks before thinking.
I’ll start by saying: This book should be required reading for high schoolers. It deals with a lot of hard-hitting issues, such as sexual assault, sexism, racism, gang violence, the death of a loved one, etc. Additionally, there are quite a few important other topics, such as family relationships, and lots of knowle... Review:I want to start by saying Claudia Gray does a fine job writing Princess Leia. She truly is a bright point in the new canon, and it is worth reading any novel she writes.
Leia does a wonderful job of giving us a glimpse into the princesses home world. It makes the scene from A New Hope more gut wrenching especially considering how so nonchalantly Tarkington is able to give the order.
That said. I think my only mild gripe I might have with the book is the portrayal of Bail Organa. In... Read more
Review:Don't expect a lot from this book - It's great if you want a quick read about Ashoka or you're a teen reader. If you are serious fan of Star Wars books, it's best to skip this book and wait for something more substantial. This book lacks character depth, a serious plot and graphic details. Read more
Review:Mentions masturbation and and uses words that would get kids suspended from school. How is this a young adult book, why does it have a Caldecot award. While this grotesque behavior may be true to life experience for some kids, I don't want to promote it or condone it. I borrowed this book from the library and intend to take it back with some words. I don't ever believe in banning a book, but books marketed to children should not contain words that I am not allowed to include in this review..... Read more
Review:Hope Larson did an amazing job making a classic book into a lovely graphic novel. The illustrations are spot on! She took all the best parts of the book and made them come alive. Really an excellent read and a beautiful expression of L'Engle's wonderful story. Don't even hesitate: BUY THIS NOW! Read more
Review:Graphic Novels are so much fun to read, and Through the Woods was fantastic! I think this book will appeal to readers young and old alike. It was surprisingly spooky in some tales, which was an added delight. I was not expecting to get goosbumps while reading. I sat down and read the book and I as soon as I was done I went over to my cousins house to look through it with her son that loves all things ookey and spooky. He is in second grade and he loved the book! I couldn't even get him to give i... Read more
Review:It was a good book for me for summer reading this year, I am going into the 8th grade, so it was pretty easy for me. I would say this book would be for 12 and up because it could get a little inappropriate at times, there is little swearing and the main character smokes, so this wouldn't be good for younger kids, overall it was a great book.
