Review:just finished reading and I am still reeling.....I live in Jennings and have followed this case for years. so many things I had no idea about that this book shed some light on. I was pulled over for speeding a few years ago by one of the cops mentioned several times in the book and I was scared to death. that this man was still on the police force should be a crime. he has moved to the next town over to terrorize their residents. I don't know if justice will ever be served because there are... Read more
Review:Mohamedou Ould Slahi has been prisoner #760 at Guantánamo Bay military prison since 2002.
In 2001, at the behest of U.S. authorities, he was arrested --or kidnapped, depending on how you see it--in his native Mauritania, on the West coast of Africa, and secretly taken to a "black site" in Jordon where he was interrogated for eight months, then flown to Cuba.
At Guantanamo, military intelligence officers and guards subjected him to "special treatment," a protocol personally approved... Read more
Review:Have read Abraham Verghese's novel Cutting for Stone and so enjoyed the read. Amazon suggested My Own Country by the same author. What was interesting was that Dr. Verghese moved to the smoky mountains of Tennessewe in the 80's to work at a local hospital. His specialty is infectious disease. The doctor loves the area and its people, feeling that it is a good place to raise a family. Also one of the first Aids case appears. Wonderful follow up to his first book. Read more
Review:Worth reading. Good look into dynamics of addiction and impact on those around the user. Verghese is an engaging author and captures the attention of the reader quickly. While not light, the issues he tackles are real. Read more
Review:Dinner with Edward by Isabel Vincent exceeded my expectations in some ways. In others, it pole-vaulted over them. I give it my highest praise for a book that celebrates food, friendship and family: my New Yorker Father, the chef, would have loved this story.
About that: Dinner with Edward is not a novel but a memoir, so the female main character is also the author. I didn't realize this fact until after I finished the story and did a little research. Until that point a part of me wondered... Read more
Review:Loved the entertaining text, interesting recipes (yet to be tried) along with cute photos! I "related" even tho' I gave up a medical career once our family arrived (5 kiddos in 7 years)...great read!! Read more
Review:With 127 people and unusual family connections, I found myself using the x Ray feature on my Kindle more than any other time. Page after page, chapter after chapter was basically a redo of the ones before. Same problems shared by all the characters. Not a good read. The end was a long time coming. Read more

Review:I'm a white American who was quite impressed with Richburg's account. While many reviewers write valid criticisms of _Out of America_, I've noticed that an awful lot of the negative reviews use words like "Uncle Tom," "oreo," "self-hating," "chained slave," and the like. One reviewer who merely stated she wished she'd thrown the book into the trash before reading it is a fan of Johnnie Cochran and the "misunderstood" Al Sharpton. I can't say I give much credence to the opinions of people who th... Read more
