The Soul of a New Machine
The Soul of a New Machine

Review:In The Soul of a New Machine, Kidder accompanies a team of young
engineers tasked with building a new computer for Data General. The
project is led by a curt manager with a methodology he calls mushroom
management (keep them in a damp, dark place, and feed them shit) that
would be impossible to instate in any sensible company these days. The
project is of highest significance for the company, and everything is
due yesterday, everyone working in a frantic pace to get the compute... Read more

Strength in What Remains (Random House Reader's Circle)

Review:This is a wonderful combination of inspirational story and immensely talented writer. The second half of the book takes it to the next level, by proiving a reflection on the events and how they fit into the complex story of humanity. Read more

Inside the Silicon Valley Money Machine - Chaos Monkeys
Inside the Silicon Valley Money Machine - Chaos Monkeys

Review:If Antonio Martinez never writes another book, he will still go down as the author who best captured the Zeitgeist in the hottest (dare I say central?) industry of our times.

Much like Michael Lewis’ debut a short 26 years ago, this is the story of a young graduate who lands a seat at the high table without having formally been invited, makes the most of it, keeps his sanity and lives to tell.

So you follow him from the Vampire Squid to Adchemy, you cheer for him when he persuades ... Read more

and the Framing of an Innocent Man
and the Framing of an Innocent Man

Review:When Michael Bishop decides to explore Nashville history and stories, he walks into the Nashville archives building and (surprisingly) is allowed to explore the 1963 records from the office of the former chief of police. When he opens the first box he is greeted by two brown recluse spiders quietly guarding the secrets within. I am not sure if Mr. Bishop intended for these little poisonous spinners to be a metaphoric/foreshadowing literary device for what is to follow in the book. But, by the en... Read more

Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story
Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story

Review:a powerful, thorough look inside the intricacies of a relationship between two people, their relationship to psychoactive powers within their universe, and nitty gritty details about the nature of politics and philosophy.
Romance and science coalesce symphonically here.
An encyclopedic undertaking that achieves success on a number of fronts, this work shatters delusions and opens your mind. There is really something for everyone here: an inspiring love story and a challenging counter-cultu... Read more

Ulysses S. Grant (Modern Library War) - Personal Memoirs
Ulysses S. Grant (Modern Library War) - Personal Memoirs

Review:This book is about history but extremely relevant and insightful regarding the challenges our country faces today. I believe if more people read books like this we would all have a better perspective. While the book is long and can be confusing if the reader does not have basic knowledge of the Civil War it's a must read for military professionals or any citizen of the US who want a deeper understanding of his/her country Read more

Chinese Cinderella: Novel-Ties Study Guide
Chinese Cinderella: Novel-Ties Study Guide

Desde Guatemala Read more

Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure
Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure

Review:The author describes India as profound and profane. That pretty much sums up her book as well. Maybe Disney Land with the whiff and splat of raw sewerage would be another summation of her india. She thoroughly investigates every single "ism" and geographic location on the sub continent. Calcutta is about the only place she doesn't visit. The book is thoroughly educational from a cultural, religious, and geographic stand point. In reading up on India for a coming visit she is one of the best... Read more

Red Hot and Holy: A Heretic's Love Story
Red Hot and Holy: A Heretic's Love Story

Review:You know when exactly the right book finds you at exactly the right time? You know when you're reading a book and feel like your skin is on fire and you can't slow down or you can't blink or you can't even exhale or else you might miss something? You know when a book so thoroughly captures your attention that the world could be blowing up around you, buildings falling, babies crying, lightening crashing, floods flashing, and you don't even notice to look up? You know when the hands on the end of... Read more

A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History
A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History

Review:For anybody who likes this book, check out Human Accomplishment by Charles Murray, a bigger (and more scholarly) attempt to categorize four thousand important people in history. I'm sure lots of readers would like to change the order (and/or contents) of Hart's list of 100 influential people, and somehow get offended that Hart ranked so-and-so higher than such-and-such, but this book is just plain fun to read, especially if you are from Scotland (which is disproportionately represented).
