Review:This excellent book provided me with a great understanding on why the Vietnam war turned out the way it did. It was run by politicians who directed the war and they used the generals as mere technicians to carry out their orders. It seems to me Hitler did the same with his generals with disastrous results for Germany. LBJ was happy enough with a stalemate in Vietnam while the generals always want to win. I wonder how many draftees of the time would have willingly gone over there if they had know... Read more
Review:Kissinger has produced an excellent book for those interested in world politics and foreign policy. The book give a deep perspective on why different parts of the world operate so differently. A combination of culture, religion, history, this is a book for understanding and keeping in your collection. Read more
Review:Figes pulls off a pretty impressive feat here: he makes a relatively fast and interesting book out of a complex and painful human event. This book gives a good idea of the extremities of brutality, stupidity, and treachery that accompanied the Russian Revolution. It may not please some readers seeking a final, official "judgment" of the event, but so what? It tells you what happened and gives some reasons why. That's the purpose of the study of history. Review:Lots of really interesting content, but doesn't really draw it together into anything conclusive. Seemed like it was setting up for a central critique on Russia's modern propaganda but then pulls its punches at the end. Maybe it's meant for you to come to your own conclusions...but the way the book was going, it seemed like there would be one last hard-hitting chapter that summed up how all these different sub-stories were part of the larger Kremlin strategy.
I was still sucked in to the ... Read more
Review:As some of the previous readers have stated, this is a great read on counter terrorism. Those Palestinians who had a role in the Olympic murders are dealt with by a professional hit squad sent out from Israel. Jonas makes the reader know who he is supporting, Avner and his four buddies assigned to track down eleven people who had a hand in the Munich murders.
I don't know if you can believe everything in this book. Jonas in his introduction and footnotes, states that some things were just ... Read more
Review:Well done, Anne. This book captures the real Russia that is often not described in the news media. Anne made a wise choice to get well off the beaten path in Russia to research her story subject and characters. My takeaway: Russians are not all that different from Americans. They want improvements in their lives as we do but their existence has been shaped by their unstable and corrupt politics. Anne describes it with personal experience, emotion, and expertise.
If you like historical and po... Read more
Review:Everyone who is interested in the root causes of the chaos and violence in the Middle East should read this book. Wright alternates a great story --the day by day unfolding of the Cape David Israeli-Egyptian peace conference convened by President Jimmy Carter -- with the history of Israel. Wright is a lucid writer who does meticulous research. You will have a new understanding of today's news if your read about those 13 days in September. Read more
