Review:The author obviously worked hard on assembling these stories from the men and women who lived this history. Great stories.
I came across some discrepancies and a little more research would have been beneficial to paint the picture.
It is a little bit like several people witnessing an automobile accident and afterward no two people agree completely on what happened.
All in all, I recommend it, but do advise you
compare it to other's telling of the same stories. Read more

Review:Studs Terkel is one of the most interesting journalists I have ever read. I picked up this book for my college US History class and I read far more entries than the ones assigned to us. Getting a clear picture of World War II is very difficult, especially given the nature of primary sources (like film reels advocating women to go to work, or whatever) which assert that the War was indisputably the "Good War." Through Terkel's book I have learned that WWII was much more complicated than a simp... Read more
Review:A gripping book!
The authors keep you turning page after page as you follow in the footsteps of the U.S. Army nurses of World War II.

Haskell was shocked to see tall men disappear up to their necks in the Mediterranean. She watched as two of the shorter nurses in her party followed the soldiers and san... Read more

Review:I'm rounding up somewhat. The rather pedestrian style doesn't significantly detract from the fascinating subject matter.
The story of the "Ghost Army" is very impressive indeed, and often amusing as well. I frequently stopped and went looking for someone to whom I could read the latest anecdote.
The writing is straightforward, adequate to the task. It's the subject matter that makes the book.
Since so many of the members of these units were visual artists, the book includes ... Read more

Review:'Embracing Defeat' is a Pulitzer prize winning portrait of Japanese society after the defeat in WW2. It is a wide ranging survey, which, despite some guiding themes, often feels more like a collection of essays than a unified work.
There are, I think, several questions of great interest to the contemporary reader about Japan. One would probably be most interested in learning about how Japan dealt with the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; how Japan turned from a racist, imperialist... Read more
